Abstract:
Tourism in Croatia is on the turning point of its development. War devastation in Croatia negatively affected tourism. The process of restoration of Croatian tourism should not only renovate the ruined tourist facilities, but it should also overcome the disadvantages of the past development of tourism. One of the important factors of the variety and quality of tourist offer are sports-recreational activities and programmes which provide the possibility of active rest and recreation. In Croatian tourism, the sports-recreational offer has reached a certain level of development, but this offer is primarily oriented towards mass tourism. The policy of the development of Croatian tourism, which is directed towards strengthening of qualitative factors of tourist offer, expresses the need of innovating the sports-recreational offer which will be compatible with the new quality of Croatian tourism. This paper treats tourism and sport as interrelated fields, and emphasizes the factors of their interdependence. A short survey of historical interdependence of tourism and sport is also given in this paper. The role of sport in modern tourism is rather significant, because it becomes one of the essential motives for travelling to certain tourist destinations. The role of sport in tourism is manifested through numerous functions that are common to sport and tourism. These functions are: the health function, educational function, socio-political function and economic functions. Sport and recreation, apart from the fact that they enrich the tourist offer, often become the main motive for travelling to certain tourist destinations. Such trips represent a special selective type of tourism - the sports-recreational tourism. Apart from humanistic functions, sports-recreational tourism is the creator of certain economic values. The economic effects of sport in tourism are realized within tourist organizations, but also outside tourism (sporting equipment industry, building, handicraft trades, trade, etc.). This paper also gives the survey of the achieved economic effects of sport and recreation in Croatian tourism on the basis of several indicators: the number of the realized "sports room/nights", the number of users of sports-recreational services, and the achieved profit from sports-recreational services. These indicators also confirm the thesis that the sports-recreational services are an income-oriented category. The paper concludes with the evaluation of development possibilities of sports-recreational tourism in Croatia.

Abstract:
With the growing number of sports and other types of cultural events held in Łódź, there is a demand for new sports and recreational facilities, such as football stadiums and sports and entertainment halls. The aim of this article is to show the importance of the largest sports and recreational facilities located in the tourism space of Łódź. The analysis is mainly based on an inventory of stadiums and multi-purpose arenas in Łódź. In addition, the article provides a review of the literature related to sport tourism in cities, with emphasis on definitions of sport tourism and tourism space. Another category of information used by the author includes data compiled by institutions managing the facilities and bodies responsible for the organization of sports events in the city. The sport facilities of interest are also classified according to selected criteria. Finally, the discussion is supported by statistics about tourist traffic during sports and cultural events associated with the analysed sport and recreation facilities. The analysis indicates that the largest sports and recreation facilities play a role in the tourism space of Łódź but it is not as significant played by Piotrkowska Street or the Manufaktura shopping and service center.

Abstract:
Abstract In the past two decades, several researchers have applied service quality frameworks in sport-related domains in measuring service quality among participants. However, university campus recreation has been scarce as compared to organised sport at local, regional and national levels, which often depends on a limited tenure linked to their membership as a registered student at a university. The purpose of the study is to investigate service quality dimensions as perceived by university leisure and recreation students. A cross-sectional survey was undertaken among 301 university students using a non-probability purposive sampling. Variables that constituted campus recreation service quality were operationalised through a literature review, including sport and recreational scales. Through factor analysis, seven distinct dimensions of campus recreation service quality were established. These factors were labelled: people interaction, facility design, sociability, physical change, equipment, ambience and program range. Item total correlations show satisfactory convergence of the items within their relevant constructs. This study complements the existing recreational sports body of knowledge by exploring campus recreation service quality. These dimensions may assist campus recreation mangers to understand the dimensions that are pertinent among students within a university context better. Recreation managers, in their periodic measurement of service quality, can incorporate these dimensions.

Abstract:
Successful transition to college is an important consideration in student retention and success. Students who highly identify as high school athletes may experience adjustment difficulty when entering college without this role. The current study investigates participation in collegiate recreation programs as part of a positive adjustment process after the transition out of high school athletics. Results indicated that those with high involvement in collegiate recreation programs had greater perceptions of loss related to the cessation of their athlete role, but also experienced greater perceptions of life satisfaction. Feelings of loss following sport role exit were found to interact with recreational sports involvement on the outcome variable of life satisfaction. Specifically, among those with high loss levels, high recreational sports involvement was associated with greater satisfaction. Results have implications regarding the support of collegiate recreation as a contributor to the successful transition to college, particularly for students experiencing difficulty related to an exit from the high school athlete role.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to determine the conceptual fundamentals of modern sport system in the Strategy for the Development of Physical Culture and Sports in our country for the period until 2030, using the analysis of the fundamental changes in modern sports and the orientation of population to the values of sports. Methods and organization of the research. Analysis of the problem occurs on basis of the au-thor’s theory of sports, the study of relevant empirical facts, the results of sociological studies, as well as an analytical review of publications. Results and discussion. Analysis of the fundamental changes in modern sports and the orienta-tion of the population to the values of sport activities resulted in substantiation of conceptual provisions on the significance of the number of activities. These activities include development of various models of modern sports; priority of its health and recreational function; organizing sports for health and recreation as a new model of mass sports and as an element of the structure of children and youth sports; implementing sports for health and recreation into the education system for children and youth. Conclusion. Practical implementation of the formulated conceptual fundamentals of the modern sport system in the Strategy for the Development of Physical Culture and Sports for the period until 2030 primarily depends on changing the priorities of the state social policy in the field of sports. Innovative delivery of sport activities resulted in promotion of healthy lifestyle and crea-tive recreational activities of local communities should take the place of the practice of putting forward sports records and victories of a narrow group of people.

Abstract:
In the process of recreation, nature acts as one of the leading factors of rest and recovery, restoration of physical and neuropsychological strength of a person. Recreational and sports nature usage is implemented through a complex of activities related to the usage of natural resources for the purpose of improving people's health, restoring their physical and psychological well-being, and expanding the ecological and cultural outlook. The study of geospatial features of recreational and sports resources contributes to their use and perspective of their consumption. Purpose. To study the retrospective principles of formation, historical and natural prerequisites for development and geospatial analysis of the recreational organization of sports and nature usage in Lviv region, as well as prospects for further their development. Results. In general, the climatic conditions within Lviv region are equally suitable for recreational and sports usage. Favorable conditions for seasonal recreation types in the region are approximately 10 months within the year. The mountainous realm of the region is the major region for the winter sports and recreation. Mountain skiing recreational and sports nature usage is developing in 10 of the 73 united territorial communities of the region. Lviv region has a good supply of water resources for recreational and sports nature usage. Water bodies within the Dniester basin are the most involved in recreational activities. They are used for rafting, diving, swimming, fishing. Less developed reservoirs within the basin of the Western Bug River, which are involved in swimming, rafting and fishing. An important direction of sports recreation is air space usage, such as paragliding, ballooning, parachuting, and flying on light aircraft. Conclusions. Irrational and non-professional lands usage for health and recreational purposes do not always contribute to the development of recreational and sports nature usage within the territorial communities of the Lviv region. It is expedient to ensure the introduction of market regulators into the practice of recreational and sports nature usage; the development of methods of recreational ecosystem services assessment and the implementation of monitoring of the state and use of recreational and sports resources.

Abstract:
The range of sports and recreation facilities’ offer should be very wide in order for all social groups of the examined environment to have access to sports and recreation facilities. Therefore, Poznan City Hall should take into account all difficulties that limit the access to these facilities when preparing management policy of sports and recreation infrastructure and its functioning. That is why the main goal of this study is to recognize difficulties limiting the access to sports and recreation facilities in this city. The research carried out at indoor tennis courts (16 facilities), indoor swimming polls (12 facilities) and fitness clubs (11 facilities) in Poznan covered 1159 service recipients (using the services of a given sports and recreation facility). The author-constructed questionnaire addressed to the service recipients (residents of the city of Poznan who use the services offered at the examined sports and recreation facilities). Furthermore, the service recipients were divided into a group of people doing sports competitively and a group of recipients who have never practiced sports as professional athletes. The validated questionnaire sent to the examined service recipients included suggestions of difficulties that may limit the access to sports and recreation facilities in the city of Poznan. Further analysis of the importance of difficulties that limit the access to sports and recreation facilities may allow indicating the reason why recreational activity of residents is limited. A lower level of satisfaction and thus a lower rating of the respondents was obtained by a set of features constituting, according to the respondents, difficulties limiting the access to the use of sports and recreation facilities (high prices and too great of a distance of the sports and recreation facility from the place of residence).

Falcous, Mark Alan. "Sport and globalisation : local identities, consumption and global basketball." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2002. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/6798.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the manner in which globalisation processes are exerting transformative influences on local cultural contexts. Specifically, it utilises a case study of basketball to address the issues surrounding the juncture between local cultural identities, sport and global processes: the local-global sports nexus. Characteristic of globalisation processes are the activities of sports-related transnational corporations (TNCs) in global markets. The presence of such TNCs raises questions regarding the juncture with ostensibly indigenous cultures and identities associated with sport. The thesis constitutes several interlocking components which seek to address the multi-faceted nature of the local-global basketball interplay. First, a review of literature details both the political-economic context of the development of 'indigenous' English basketball, and the interdependencies surrounding National Basketball Association (NBA) expansion to Britain. Second, media representation within the local-global interplay is addressed in a comparative textual analysis of NBA and indigenous game coverage on British television. It is argued that local and global basketball are represented in a varying manner, which reinforces a local-global basketball hierarchy. Third, a two season multi-method ethnographic case study, incorporating: participant observations, interviews, a questionnaire and focus groups explored the consumption of 'local' basketball. The findings reveal complex responses and engagement with global processes, contextualised by the heterogenous nature of basketball fandom. Specifically, local identities and affiliations, while associated with consumption, also mediate broader global processes. The findings are discussed with reference to the relationship between local and global basketball in. Britain and within the wider theoretical debates surrounding the globalisation of sport.

Rich, Dustin. "Student engagement in Pacific Recreation's programs, services, and facilities as a predictor of participation in sports clubs." Scholarly Commons, 2019. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/3586.

Abstract:
Sports clubs are a program ran through Pacific Recreation at the University of the Pacific. This study determines whether using services and facilities that Pacific Recreation offers has a statistically significant relationship with students joining or participating in sports clubs. METHOD: When a student comes into the Baun Fitness Center to work out, participate in a class, take part of personal training, or climb the rock tower, that student has to swipe into the facility and service of choice. The same process occurs for when a student wants to use external services like Intramural Sports and Informal Recreation. Quantitative data were pulled from Innosoft Fusion, software that Pacific Recreation utilizes to manage and track their facilities, programs, and services. 2,332 individual student datum were analyzed from the information received from Innosoft Fusion to measure student engagement from the Fall 2017 semester. RESULTS: The Baun Fitness Center and other external services were found to play a significant role with association with participation in sports clubs. Participation in Baun Fitness Center workouts, rock tower, informal recreation, tiger training, and intramural sports associates with participation in sports clubs. It was determined that for each additional individual that participates in these services or programs, there would be an increased chance of individuals to also participate in sports clubs. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that there are additional ways for sports clubs to advertise and promote their clubs for recruitment. Pacific Recreation’ marketing department can use the results from this study to analyze and plan additional marketing strategies that can use cross-promotion from the programs, services, and facilities Pacific Recreation has to offer. This study recommends multiple future research ideas for Pacific Recreation to take apart in to gain new insights on participation and marketing ideas from all of their programs.

Abstract:
Abstract Sports and recreation are an important source of injuries and deaths, including the majority of drownings, many firearm fatalities, about 10 percent of all brain injuries (Kraus et al. 1984), 7 percent of spinal cord injuries (Kraus et al. 1975), and 13 percent of facial injuries treated in hospitals (Karlson 1983). Two important groups of recreational injuries, those related to swimming and bicycling, are addressed in Chapters 13 and 21, respectively. Motorcyling, which for many people is a form of recreation rather than transportation per se and which produces many injuries and deaths, is addressed in Chapter 20.

Full text
Abstract:
The Nordic Rural Youth Panel has synthesized a report outlining 40 actionable recommendations for making rural areas in the Nordic region more attractive for young people. This paper addresses the ongoing trend of young people moving to cities, highlighting the need for better public transportation, a variety of housing options, and education that connects to local job markets in rural areas. The panel wants to change the common view that success and a good life can only be found in cities, showing instead that rural areas have a lot to offer. The report expands on several key areas: - Transportation: Young people in rural areas need easy and affordable access to public transit and various local travel options to support a fair transition to green transport. - Housing: There's a need for affordable and diverse housing, ensuring young people have good options for both renting and buying that meet their needs, and are linked to local services and community activities. - Education and employment: Young people need access to education at all levels in rural areas, with clear paths from education to local jobs, including options for remote work. - Health and recreation: There should be safe spaces for discussions about mental and physical health, as well as access to places for sports and other activities. - Community and social life: Funding is needed for public spaces and activities that bring people together, helping to create strong community ties. - Inclusion: Policies and discussions need to be accessible and relevant to young people, using their language and platforms to ensure they can actively participate and feel valued. Developed with input from 25 young people across the whole Nordic region, the panel’s recommendations provide a direct and valuable perspective for policymakers. It serves as a guide for creating appealing, dynamic, and sustainable rural communities, ensuring young people are at the centre of these efforts.

Zibani, Nadia. Ishraq: Safe spaces to learn, play and grow: Expansion of recreational sports program for adolescent rural girls in Egypt. Population Council, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/pgy22.1003.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past three years, the Ishraq program in the villages of northern El-Minya, Egypt, grew from a novel idea into a vibrant reality. In the process, approximately 300 rural girls have participated in a life-transforming chance to learn, play, and grow into productive members of their local communities. Currently other villages—and soon other governorates—are joining the Ishraq network. Ishraq is a mixture of literacy, life-skills training, and—for girls who have been sheltered in domestic situations of poverty and isolation—a chance to play sports and games with other girls their age and develop a sense of self-worth and mastery; the program reinforces the lessons they receive in life-skills classes about hygiene, nutrition, and healthy living. This guide to the sports and games component of the program is geared to the needs of disadvantaged adolescent girls. It is intended for those in the development community interested in the potential of sports to enhance the overall impact of adolescent programs. Sports can be combined with other program components to give girls a more active experience, whether the primary focus is reproductive health, literacy, or livelihood skills.

Hoy, Michael D. Herons and Egrets. U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2017.7208742.ws.

Full text
Abstract:
Herons and egrets commonly cause damage at aquaculture facilities and recreational fishing waters where fish are held at high densities. Fish-eating birds also can have an impact on intensively managed sport fisheries. Damage occurs when herons and egrets feed on fish purchased and released for recreational sport fishing activities. Values of these fish can be quite high given the intensity of management activities and the direct relationship of fishery quality to property value. Herons and egrets are freshwater or coastal birds of the family Ardeidae. Herons and egrets discussed in this section are all piscivorous. They are opportunistic feeders, however, and will consume small amphibians, insects, and reptiles. Due to these food preferences, herons and egrets are attracted to shallow lakes and human-made impoundments. Native bird species are covered under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) and given federal protection. Depredation permits can be obtained through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In addition, individual states may require their own permits for legal take of these bird species.

Erulkar, Annabel, and Barbara Mensch. Youth centres in Kenya: Evaluation of the Family Planning Association of Kenya programme. Population Council, 1997. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh1997.1025.

Full text
Abstract:
Since 1987, the Family Planning Association of Kenya (FPAK) has operated two youth centers, one in Nairobi and the other in Mombasa. The centers target unmarried youth aged 10–24 and their primary objective is reduction in incidence of sexual and reproductive-health-related problems. These centers offer recreational and sports facilities, counseling services, including reproductive health (RH) information, limited RH services, and referrals. In 1996, FPAK undertook a systematic evaluation of its youth-center program including a situation analysis of the centers, a survey in their catchment areas, and an analysis of program costs. The main strength of the program was found to be its network of youth promoters and coordinators, who reached large numbers of youth through educational activities. A negative attitude toward adolescent sexual activity was found to be pervasive among youth center staff, however if retrained they could be an inexpensive and effective means of delivering nonprescriptive contraceptives. Investing in staff would reduce high rates of attrition among volunteers and cost of recruitment and training. As noted in this report, there is need for improvement in the youth centers, however FPAK has shown considerable commitment to meeting RH needs of adolescents in Kenya.
