This thesis explores the potential of the sports museum as a major institution and resource. Drawing from the great tradition of sports and from the character of the New England region, the design of a New England Sports Museum is undertaken. The museum's design is formulated on a concept of architectural imbeddedness; the notion of a "world within" - a world which in preserving a contextual fabric and character becomes part of the life of that context, while engendering a distinct experience within which is its own.

Many mountain resorts lack balance in revenue from season to season. Mountain resorts are most often geared toward, and capitalize on, peak ski season, receiving much less visitation and revenue in the summer season and even more so in the spring and fall. Due to projected climate changes, “increasing temperatures will affect important winter activities such as downhill and cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling, which require snow on the ground. Projections indicate later snow and less snow coverage in ski resort areas” (Karl, Melillo, Peterson, 133). This indicates an even greater need for a shift to year-round attractions for visitors in order to balance the revenue stream of mountain resorts. The infusion of an all-season action sports camp is a catalyst to generate an increase in year-round visitation and profit for the resort. Examples of action sports include skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, BMX biking, and mountain biking. When integrating an action sports camp into the existing resort, striving for balance, harmony, and oneness between the existing and proposed is imperative to success. These principals are present in the sports and allow for the connection from the athletes to the landscape. With any proposed development, specifically in mountain environments, potential environmental impacts are an issue, especially at a site where the natural scenic beauty is in such high demand. “It is the resort’s environment that draws the customer” Schwanke, 119). The relationships between the mountain, resort, camp, and users must be balanced and work in harmony with each other. Copper Mountain Resort provides an ideal location to implement this strategy. Catalyst Action Sports Camp plays on the tension between the mountain and the human, capitalizing on the balance, harmony, and oneness between them. Campers are connected to the surrounding mountain majesty through directed views, inspiring and exciting them to progress their skills and challenge their fears and become one with the mountain. Catalyst is infused into the existing resort, harmonizing with resort operations and stimulating life in the village in all seasons. Ultimately,Catalyst Action Sports Camp helps balance the revenue stream and provide additional stability given changing climate scenarios.

This thesis describes a compact, wireless, wearable system that measures, for purposes of biomechanical analysis, signals indicative of forces, torques and other descriptive and evaluative features that the human body undergoes during bursts of extreme physical activity (such as during athletic performance). Standard approaches leverage high speed camera systems, which need significant infrastructure and provide limited update rates and dynamic accuracy, to make these measurements. This project uses 6 degree-of-freedom inertial measurement units worn on various segments of an athlete's body to directly make these dynamic measurements. A combination of low and high G sensors enables sensitivity for slow and fast motion, and the addition of a compass helps in tracking joint angles. Data from the battery-powered nodes is acquired using a custom wireless protocol over an RF link. This data, along with rigorous calibration data, is processed on a PC, with an end product being precise angular velocities and accelerations that can be employed during biomechanical analysis to gain a better understanding of what occurs during activity. The focus of experimentation was baseball pitching and batting at the professional level. Several pitchers and batters were instrumented with the system and data was gathered during several pitches or swings. The data was analyzed, and the results of this analysis are presented in this thesis. The dynamic results are more precise than from other camera based systems and also offer the measurement of metrics that are not available from any other system, providing the opportunity for furthering sports medicine research. System performance and results are evaluated, and ideas for future work and system improvements are presented.

Sports venues require large amounts of parking to facilitate the number of spectators attending an event. The parking, mostly surface, is underutilized when compared to traditional parking lots accommodating daily use. Large parking surfaces alter the natural hydrological cycle by generating large volumes of runoff. Over time, pollutants build up on a parking surface and are discharged into a stormwater drainage system during a rain event. The intent of the research is to investigate the use of Best Management Practices that ultimately reduce the pollutant loads created by stormwater runoff while creating amenities for spectators that could potentially generate revenue. The focus of the study will be on a 400 acre sports venue in Kansas City, Missouri, the Truman Sports Complex. To understand retrofitting stormwater management practices, one must understand how large parking lots are constructed and understand successful examples. Through the use of archival research, interviews and analysis of two parking lot case studies, Northgate Mall in Seattle, Washington and US Cellular Field in Chicago, Illinois, the research analyzed how retrofitting design solutions are utilized to reduce stormwater pollutant loads. Each case study documents a distinct type of retrofitting strategy; bioswales at Northgate Mall and permeable concrete pavers at US Cellular Field. Using the Design Point Method developed by the Center for Watershed Protection, the research analyzes each case study retrofit design solution - conceptually and post construction. The Design Point Method allowed the research to measure the success of retrofitting strategies and informed the research to as to how the strategies could be implemented at the Truman Sports Complex. The conclusion of the project is a retrofit design solution of a surface parking lot at the Truman Sports Complex. Using the Design Point Method as an analysis tool, the final study provides compelling evidence that retrofitting existing surface parking lots at sports venues using Best Management Practices provides a sustainable solution to reducing pollutant loads while creating the potential for enhancing the tailgate experience for the sports fan.

Social interaction is an essential part of human communication, however the participants are often miles apart. Technological advances strive to bridge the physical distances between people, but generally lack the social potential offered through activities such as sports and games. An Exertion Interface combines the strength of both: the ability of sports to connect people socially, and the ability of telecommunications to connect people over a distance. By requiring intense physical effort from the participants, an Exertion Interface creates a better social bonding experience than traditional computer interfaces. This assertion is tested through the creation of a system in which two remotely-located participants play a physically demanding ball game against each other while communicating through an overlaid life-size video-conference. A study with 56 participants showed that players who used the Exertion Interface played longer, said they got to know the other player better, had more fun, became better friends, and were happier with the transmitted audio and video quality in comparison to a control group playing the game with the same video-conferencing setup, but using a traditional keyboard interface. Exertion Interfaces, which are easy to learn, but hard to master, open a door to a new world of interfaces that facilitate social interaction between remote individuals.

ABSTRACT: The perception of the city these days is defined by images and spaces that somehow create dynamics, impulses between people and architecture. Seixal is one example of that, where the symbolism of an industrial era remains a striking element in the landscape and morphology of the city. Architecture as a Sea Portal aims to develop a project that provokes a new way of looking at the relationship between city, river and landscape. For this reflection we will analyze the city's past in order to understand its history and values. The theoretical concepts approached will be somehow incorporated in the proposal of an urban design that covers the riverfront of Ponta dos Corvos, unifying some of the mill constructions from the Galvão tide mill to the Torre tide mill and improving the union of this space with the Miratejo area. In this way, the Ponta dos Corvos project intends to take advantage of the unique natural conditions it offers and reuse the marginalised industrial heritage and also highlight the ecological quality of the area. The architectural proposal intends to obtain an educational and cultural character, such as the valorization of knowledge, culture and sport, of the existing territory, natural and patrimonial, associating itself with the local identity, promoting the memory of the city.

Full textThe High-Performance Soccer Center in Cusco is a project that was born from my passion and love for this sport. This sports center is designed to house high-level young soccer players from the entire southern region of Peru. The main objective is focused on the use of Sensory Design (colors, textures, design patterns) to achieve the design of spaces that generate stimuli and positive feelings in the athlete. This sports hostel seeks to cover the basic needs of athletes (training, medical care, food, lodging and educational support) so that they can perform adequately and exploit their full potential. As a secondary objective, this project seeks to strengthen the cultural identity of the users and inhabitants of the area. In addition to containing all the necessary spaces of a CARF, some community spaces were added for the use of the population. This sports center is located in a calm and natural environment, on the outskirts of the urban area of the city, for a greater concentration of the athlete. In addition, the climatic conditions of the area are favourable for the physical development of the athlete. The project borders to the north with the urban area, locating the most public environments in that area. Towards the south, the project adjoins a more natural environment (river, vegetation, mountains), so that the sports spaces, rooms, and general living are located facing these areas.
