Dosumu, Adekunle A. "The environmental impacts and wellbeing benefits of sport : assessing spectator and participant dominated sports in England." Thesis, University of Essex, 2016. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/16441/.

Full text
Abstract:
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from waste and transportation are of environmental concern. Globally, every year, waste contributes an estimated 5% and transport approximately 23% of the total anthropogenic GHG emissions. Sport contributes to GHG emissions by spectators and participants travelling to/from sporting venues and generating waste. Whilst a small reduction in an individual’s travel and waste may be perceived as having negligible impact, if these are aggregated over a population, the resultant GHG emissions can be significant. Although there is scientific evidence of the environmental impact of major sporting events there is limited research on it at the grassroots level. In addition watching and participating in sport results in wellbeing benefits such as improved self-esteem and mood. This research quantitatively examined both the environmental impacts and wellbeing benefits of sport at the grassroots level focusing on both spectator-dominated and participant-dominated sports in England. Three studies were conducted examining spectator-dominated sport: 1) GHG emissions relating to travel to and from football games; 2) GHG emissions relating to waste at football games and 3) the effects of watching football on mental wellbeing. Two further studies were also conducted assessing participant-dominated sport: 4) GHG emissions from travel to and from running location; and the effects of sport (running) on mental wellbeing and connection with nature and 5) the effects of running outdoors on mental wellbeing (pre and post study). The research showed that both spectators and participants’ sport considerably generated GHG emissions from travel and waste when extrapolated nationally. However, engaging in spectator-dominated or participant-dominated sports resulted in wellbeing benefits. Watching football resulted in better mental wellbeing, while running particularly outdoors resulted in improvements in wellbeing such as improved mood and increase in self-esteem after participating in sport. This research suggests that participating in sport can initiate a positive change in a person’s relationship with the natural world. These findings on the environmental impact and wellbeing benefits of both spectator-dominated and participant-dominated sports have implications for individuals, private sectors, sporting organisations, policy makers and government authorities.

Abstract:
The application of sport science is crucial to athlete performance development. However, the frequent disconnection among sport scientists, coaches, and athletes often leads to miscommunication and increased potential for performance barriers. The creation of sport performance enhancement groups (SPEGs) can help with the professional integration and communication among all personnel involved in the training process. However, SPEG formation faces a number of barriers in the current coaching landscape. The application of a benefits-based programming (BBP) model may aid in the formation of an SPEG and the dissemination of education for coaches, athletes, and administrators. A field experience involving the BBP model and SPEG creation in a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II school is presented with multiple model iterations

Michael, Elpida. "Stair climbing at home for health benefits." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2018. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/8550/.

Full text
Abstract:
Climbing stairs is a lifestyle physical activity with effects on a range of CVD risk factors. This thesis explored the potential of stair climbing at home as a public health intervention in three empirical studies. A pilot study tested the feasibility of progressive increases in stair climbing and descent at home. Eight participants progressed from 10 floors.day-1 in week one to 19 floors.day-1 in week four. Percent body fat, SBP and leg power were improved at the end of the brief intervention. The second study randomly allocated 24 healthy weight (BMI = 22.1) and 26 overweight (BMI = 31.7) sedentary women to gym-based and home-based stair climbing for 5 days.week-1 over 8 weeks, with a healthy weight control group recruited for comparison. Intervention participants progressed from 2 continuous 32.8m ascents.day-1 in weeks 1-2 to 5 ascents.day-1 in weeks 7-8. Stair climbing improved body composition, cardio-respiratory fitness and serum lipid profiles. Increases in leg power were found in the stair climbing group. Overall, effects were similar for gym-based and home-based interventions. Given the effects of leg power, and the importance of leg power in the elderly, the third study investigated the potential psychological determinants of increased stair climbing at home for an older population. Participants (n = 281; age = 69.2 years) reported the number of floors that they were willing to climb continuously at home, as well as potential barriers and facilitators of the behaviour. Positive beliefs about the benefits of regular stair climbing and fear of falling, both on stairs and in general, were the major predictors of willingness to climb stairs at home. Discussion focuses on the potential of home-based stair climbing as a cost-effective intervention for preservation of function and CVD risk in public health.

Oldenboom, Egbert Roelof. "Costs and benefits of major sports events : a case-study of Euro 2000." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2005. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/20772/.

Full text
Abstract:
An academic consensus seems to be that investments in sports events can hardly ever be defended on economic grounds, and that the evidence for their contribution to the promotional objectives of the host cities is not solid. The aim of this thesis is to apply a methodology for evaluating major sports events to the European Football Championship 2000, in short Euro 2000. This event was organized by Belgium and the Netherlands, but this evaluation concerns only the Netherlands. The methodology is a synthesis of economic impact analysis and cost benefit analysis (CBA). The CBA by multiple accounts introduced in this thesis is intended as a structuring device for public discussion. Data was collected in three different ways: from visitors to this event by face-to-face interviews; from the population in five European countries by telephone interviews before and after the event; and from the Dutch population in the host cities and the rest of the country, also by telephone surveys. The net total sample consisted of 4,000 interviews. The methodology of multiple accounts establishes an explicit distinction between private and public benefits. The largest financial profit was made by Uefa, estimated at €81 million. For the Dutch business community as a whole, the benefits outweighed the costs. Some branches of industry experienced a local decline in demand, but this was probably compensated by other branches or regions. These results confirm the observation in the literature that there are substantial 'crowding-out' effects on visitor patterns in host cities during major sports events. Now, as a result of this present research, it can be added that a substantial part of these effects is on domestic visits and should be discounted as economic impact at the national level. Some branches experienced a boom or decline, which was notspecifically related to hosting Euro 2000, but is rather typical for any international football championship or sports event. The real winners were: the accommodation sector (especially the campsites), and catering (cafes, fast-food) sectors in the host cities. The results for the hotel sector are less unequivocal because of the crowding-out effects of Euro 2000 on foreign tourists. For the public sector (the aggregated accounts of central and local government), the financial benefits have outweighed the costs. For an evaluation of the public costs and benefits, the external effects are also of relevance. The most frequently-mentioned positive external benefit is the increased awareness of the Netherlands in other countries. Surveys on image and awareness in foreign countries have confirmed these effects, but only to a modest extent. Nevertheless, it was possible to establish a relationship between the effects in specific countries and the performance of their national team. It seems, therefore, that the earlier conclusions, derived from research on professional team sports in the United States, are sometimes too easily stretched to include major sports events. This misses two points. First, sports events might be undertaken at a low public cost. Such events might be organized using existing venues and thus would involve little public investment. Second, international sports events, by their very nature, bring additional expenditures to a city and country, whereas in the case of a sports franchise most of the economic effects are mainly of a switching nature.

Everett, Michael D., and Michael W. Ramsey. "A Framework and Model for Estimating the Individual Benefits and Costs of Exercise for Long Run Health." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2009. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/4131.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper develops a computer spreadsheet framework and model for estimating the individual benefits and costs of exercise for long run health. The biological costs and benefits rest on solid production functions between exercise intensity levels, fitness levels, and two key indices of long run health outputs—probability of all cause mortality and an index of health care costs. The less certain monetary estimates of those costs and benefits come from reviews of the key literature. The resulting model of individual exercise costs and benefits provides a basis for individual long run health planning plus cost effective and cost benefit analysis of different exercise strategies. The latter, which uses the implicit value of life, may provide insights to the lack of consistent exercise and strategies to increase it.

Watts, C. "The psychological benefits of Special Olympic involvement." Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2011. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/10344/.

Full text
Abstract:
Section A is a review of the current literature on sports involvement with respect to people with learning disabilities. It begins by describing the health status of people with learning disabilities and provides a context of sport and wellbeing in the general population. It continues by describing four reviews of the literature exploring people with learning disabilities with respect to sports involvement. This section ends with a description of the Special Olympics research and suggests future research needs in this area. Section B describes a quantitative cross-sectional study comparing two groups of sports active and non-active people with learning disabilities using several psychological measures. Objectives. There is evidence that people with learning disabilities have poorer mental and physical wellbeing compared with that of the wider population. The aim of this study was to explore whether a group of people with learning disabilities involved in sport differed in terms of psychological well-being compared with a group not involved in sport. Design. A cross sectional design was employed comparing two groups, sports active and non-active on the variables: Self-esteem, quality of life, stress levels and social networks. Methods. Seventy four participants were recruited across South East England. They completed a number of psychological measures. Results. Analysis revealed that self-esteem, quality of life, social networks and stress were all significantly correlated with Special Olympics involvement. A logistic regression analysis was used to explore whether scores on these variables were able to predict sport membership. Self-esteem was found to be a high predictor of group membership, those in the Special Olympics having higher self-esteem. Conclusions. The findings provide further evidence of a positive association between sport involvement and increased psychological wellbeing. The implications of these findings for theory and future research into the relationship between sport and psychological wellbeing within the learning disabled population is considered. Section C is a critical appraisal of the quantitative study that considers four aspects: research skills; amendments to the study if it were replicated; how the study may have influenced clinical practice; and finally, further research and methods relating to this area.

Abstract:

Most high school students have the opportunity to participate in athletic programs during a transformative time in their personal and academic development. Very little qualitative research examines how former high school athletes perceive these experiences after they graduate. In this descriptive, exploratory study, former athletes viewed their participation as a key experience that continues to affect them positively two to five years later. During semi-structured interviews, they spoke of having developed and maintained new capacities for leadership, greater personal accountability, and healthier overall lifestyle choices. They also learned how to relate to others, both on and off the athletic field in more authentic and caring ways, and thus how to establish and maintain lasting relationships. Many of these outcomes echo aspects of self-concept and character development as described in the literature. Although athletic coaches' behaviors were described as both positive and negative, participants were generally able to overcome the negative aspects. Especially when budget cuts threaten many non-academic and extra-curricular offerings, the results of this small and geographically limited study point to the need to further explore how high school athletics may have lasting positive effects on participants.

Goodwin, Denise May. "An examination of the bio-psychological benefits of physical activity in parks and urban green spaces : a mixed-method approach." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2012. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/6161/.

Full text
Abstract:
As natural environments have been identified as places for mental restoration and social development there is the potential to address a number of bio-psychosocial health inequalities by encouraging urban park use. The current research explores the link between people and nature within the urban context of Liverpool across 3 phases of research. The reconnaissance phase explored health inequalities, physical activity levels and park access in Liverpool. Analysis showed that Liverpool is one of the most socially and economically deprived areas within England, with less than 70% of the survey population not meeting recommended physical activity levels. Although Liverpool has an abundance of parks and urban green spaces, the high health inequalities and lack of physical activity correlation with environment features suggests residents might not access parks and urban green spaces for health benefits. The exploratory study adopted a multi-method approach to investigate bio-psychosocial responses to urban city and park environments. Using repeated measures, 18 participants walked on a treadmill for 20 minutes whilst viewing and listening to either a Liverpool urban park or city centre scene. A two-way ANOVA was conducted to compare means between data collection time points within each condition for heart rate and blood pressure. Analysis for mean arterial pressure found a significant reduction for the park condition post physical activity [F(2,18) 6.83, p=.02] with the same effect on systolic blood . pressure [F(2, 18)=8.61, p=.OO] in comparison to the city scene. Semi-structured interviews conducted after testing found that cultural and social experiences influenced how participants interact with the urban environment. In particular, opportunities to access parks and natural environments during childhood was attributed to a lifespan connection. Participants reported psychological benefits of stress reduction and attention restoration and social benefits including providing a place for family and friend interaction in a park setting. Social barriers included fear from crime and harassment from teenagers. While the city was associated with traffic, congestion and noise that could evoke negative emotions, the history and diversity of Liverpool aroused pride and enjoyment that could also promote psychosocial benefits. The intervention study adopted ethnographic principles to explore cultural and individual beliefs of a group of eleven teenagers engaged in a park based physical activity programme. Observations during the programme indicated that the practitioner's role and skill base was paramount to park and activity engagement. Changes to participants across the programme impacted negatively on group dynamics, with external pressures from family and friends contributing to low attendance rates, poor time keeping and low concentration during activities. The social intervention highlighted the need to fully engage participants in the planning process and provide an agreed structure and policy for behaviour. The research highlighted a number of organisational, cultural and social issues that need to be tackled before benefits from green spaces can be fully realised. Overall research findings suggest that potential bio-psychosocial benefits of physical activity in parks and urban green spaces may be influenced by complex social issues surrounding values, culture and tradition. Further investigation into the interrelationships between neighbourhood residents, parks and urban green spaces, activities of users, and potential restorative effects could provide beneficial insights for policy makers and practitioners who would look to use these spaces for bio-psychosocial wellbeing.

This study was a description of horsemen's perceived psychological benefits and liabilities derived from leisure sport and exercise participation. The horsemen that participated in this study were active trainers or grooms who stabled their horses at a training center. Sixty-six horsemen completed the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale: 2, Stress Profile, and this researcher's inventory of horsemen's activities entitled Samaha Horsemen's Activities Questionnaire (SHAQ). Seven horsemen were interviewed to obtain qualitative data. Two of the seven horsemen were omitted from the analysis due to no or limited responses to the questions. Quantitative data results revealed that leisure participation in exercise activities positively correlated with greater well-being, physical self concept, and total self concept scores. There was a statistically significant negative relationship between time devoted to participation in exercise and stress scores. The horsemen that participated in this study work in professional harness racing. An allowable and acceptable leisure activity is gambling. However, results indicated that there were statistically significant negative relationships between time spent gambling and physical self concept, well-being, and exercise and sport participation. Horsemen who were above the median on participation in sport and exercise had significantly higher physical self concept and well being scores than those who were below the median. The results indicate that participation in a variety of exercise and sports as well as time devoted to leisure physical activity had the strongest relationship with improved well-being. Analysis of the transcribed interviews revealed two major themes (limitations and perceived outcomes) and three subthemes within limitations (time, injury, and competitiveness) and perceived outcomes (socialization, physical, and psychological well-being) that described horsemen's participation in leisure sport and exercise. A central conflict emerged within horsemen's reluctance to become assertive in addressing their limitations. Horsemen viewed limitations in participation in sport and exercise as time, injury, and competitiveness. Those who participate in leisure sport and exercise were assertive in addressing their own limitations. The perceived outcomes were physical, socialization, and psychological benefits. Participants expressed that leisure sport and exercise provided possible benefits regardless of their involvement or adherence to an exercise program.

Abstract:
Participation in sports has a strong influence on the development of African American youth and the Black community as a whole. The purpose of this paper is to explore the positive and negative effects that participating in sports has on the African American community using previous works and experiments on the topic. Results found that participation in athletics helps African American youth develop important social skills, creates an outlet to keep Black youth off the streets in impoverished neighborhoods, and establishes a vehicle to help Black youth get into college. However, the overemphasized importance of sports within the African American community through the media and Black families themselves has resulted in multiple negative effects including career immaturity, lower academic achievement and the exploitation of the Black intercollegiate athlete.

Kinser, Ann M., Michael W. Ramsey, Harold S. O'Bryant, Christopher A. Ayres, William A. Sands, and Michael H. Stone. "Vibration and Stretching Effects on Flexibility and Explosive Strength in Young Gymnasts." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2008. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/4137.

Abstract:
Purpose: Effects of simultaneous vibration-stretching on flexibility and explosive strength in competitive female gymnasts were examined. Methods: Twenty-two female athletes (age = 11.3 ± 2.6 yr; body mass = 35.3 ± 11.6 kg; competitive levels = 3-9) composed the simultaneous vibration-stretching (VS) group, which performed both tests. Flexibility testing control groups were stretching-only (SF) (N = 7) and vibration-only (VF) (N = 8). Explosive strength-control groups were stretching-only (SES) (N = 8) and vibration-only (VES) (N = 7). Vibration (30 Hz, 2-mm displacement) was applied to four sites, four times for 10 s, with 5 s of rest in between. Right and left forward-split (RFS and LFS) flexibility was measured by the distance between the ground and the anterior suprailiac spine. A force plate (sampling rate, 1000 Hz) recorded countermovement and static jump characteristics. Explosive strength variables included flight time, jump height, peak force, instantaneous forces, and rates of force development. Data were analyzed using Bonferroni adjusted paired t-tests. Results: VS had statistically increased flexibility (P) and large effect sizes (d) in both the RFS (P = 1.28 × 10−7, d = 0.67) and LFS (P = 2.35 × 10−7, d = 0.72). VS had statistically different results of favored (FL) (P = 4.67 × 10−8, d= 0.78) and nonfavored (NFL) (P = 7.97 × 10−10, d = 0.65) legs. VF resulted in statistical increases in flexibility and medium d on RFS (P = 6.98 × 10−3, d = 0.25) and statistically increased flexibility on VF NFL flexibility (P = 0.002, d = 0.31). SF had no statistical difference between measures and small d. For explosive strength, there were no statistical differences in variables in the VS, SES, and VES for the pre- versus posttreatment tests. Conclusions: Simultaneous vibration and stretching may greatly increase flexibility while not altering explosive strength.

Abstract:
Recent research has suggested that the effects of sport on well-being are mediated by psychological characteristics such as physical self-concept, instrumentality and positive body images; in addition, sport was found to be related to these psychological benefits for high school girls. However, physical self-concept played a central role by mediating the sport -body image and sport instrumentality relationships. Positive body image and instrumentality, in turn, predicted greater psychological well-being. The purpose of this investigation was to replicate earlier studies, and to examine these relationships with non-sport physical activity. Sport and physical activity were expected to contribute to higher physical self-concept, which in turn, would contribute positively to instrumentality and body image. Further, instrumentality and body image would be positively related to psychological well-being. Participants were 355 9th (n = 170) and 10th (n = 193) graders and they completed measures of involvement in sport/physical activities, physical self-concept, instrumentality, body satisfaction, self-esteem, satisfaction with life, depression, and demographics. Structural equation modeling was utilized to analyze the data. Overall, for both sport and physical activity, the models fit the data well (sport model: NNFI=.95, CFI=.96, SRMR=.08, RMSEA=.09, physical activity model: NNFI=.96, CFI=.97, SRMR=.08, RMSEA=.09). Specifically, sport participation was positively related to physical self-concept (R2 = .47); physical self-concept related to body image (R2 = .30) and instrumentality (R2 = .23); Physical activity was positively related to physical self-concept (R2 = .61); physical self-concept related to body image (R2 = .30) and instrumentality (R2 = .26). For both models, positive body image and higher levels of instrumentality contributed to greater psychological well-being (R2 = 66). These results highlight the importance of developing physical competence for high school girls through sport participation and physical activity.

Abstract:
Within the design of any building, there is a requirement for designers to understand the intended purposes of the building and the elements that influence performance. These elements can be as tangible as providing a lecture hall within a university or relatively intangible such as the environmental temperatures of the rooms. The elements involved are generally recognised within the design industry and a combined force of engineers, architects, and specialist advisors work together to ensure all of the elements are in place for each new design. However, one element affecting performance that has not yet been comprehensively covered (at least for many building types) is that relating to occupant movement and the influence this has on experience and hence performance. For example, the number of times people have to negotiate cross-flow environments in a train station before becoming agitated is unknown. Also, the average distance people will walk through a shopping centre before becoming tired and ending the activity is unknown. Even so, they will both be impacted upon by the design and they will both reflect back on the performance of the design. Before starting this research, it was realised by the research engineer that there was only a limited understanding and application of people flow analyses within industry and, where it existed, it was solely related to transport terminals, pedestrian walkways/crossings, sports stadia arrivals/egress, and evacuation analyses.

Abstract:
Participation in sport activities brings various benefits to the individuals involved as well as to the society as a whole. One of these benefits is a higher labour productivity following from a lower disease-induced absence rate and from the improved personal work characteristics. This thesis investigates the influence of public money spent in support of sport on labour productivity. The study is based on the data about these expenditures on the level of the Czech municipalities, whereas the expenditures on sport are aggregated over the municipalities belonging to each of the fourteen regions composing the Czech Republic. The performed regression analysis traces the influence of these expenditures on the disease-induced work incapacity rate in the respective region, which constitutes a proxy for labour productivity. The results of the analysis show that municipal expenditures on sport significantly decrease the disease-induced work incapacity: if municipalities in a region spend extra one hundred CZK per person on sport, the disease-induced work incapacity in the following year lowers by 0.064 to 0.083%.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to examine a relationship between perceived health and sport participation with objectives as follows: (a) to examine how athletes perceive their health and understand its importance for sport and life; (b) to examine what strategies athletes use to enhance their health and under what conditions they put their health at risk in sport; (c) to analyse social influences on athletes related to sport and health and (d) to analyse a position of health among athletes’ perceived “benefits” and “costs” of athletic career in its relation to satisfaction with sport participation. The perceived health and sport participation working model (Stambulova, Johnson, Lindwall & Hinic, 2004) was used as the theoretical framework for this study. Thirty six competitive athletes – representatives of different sports - were interviewed using a structured interview guide with both qualitative and quantitative questions. Inductive and deductive analyses were used to treat the qualitative data and to develop category profiles. SPSS was used to treat the quantitative data (descriptive statistics). The results show that the athletes’ attitude to their health is double sided. A majority of the athletes value health as important for life but at the same time 69% of them put their health at risk in their athletic career (e.g, practicing or competing when ill or injured). A majority of the athletes also use self enhancing strategies (e.g., injury and overtraining prevention), but are at the same time draining their health related resources. Health was the second highest perceived benefit of sport participation, but it was also the second highest perceived cost. Social influences are also contradictive as the athletes significant others express positive opinions about the link between sport and health, but they also often “push” athletes to put their health under risk in sport. The results are discussed in relation to the corresponding literature and the perceived health and sport participation working model.

Purpose: This study investigates the perceived service quality and leisure benefits for the members of sports dance classes, with emphasis on the differences in present conditions, their correlation and predictability. Method: A questionnaire survey is issued to 4 sports dance clubs in Taipei City with the number of participants more than 100 persons. Among the 400 questionnaires sent, 363 were valid, which means the effective rate is 90.75%. We analyzed collected data by descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation, and Stepwise regression analysis. Results: 1. Most of the members were females, accounting for 65%, ranging in age from 13 to 25 years, which accounted for 59%. Besides, 46.3% of the members had university degree and 50.1% of them spent less than 2 hours weekly on sports dance. 43.3% of the members had less than 5 years of participation experience and 57.6% of them learned both Latin dance and standard dance.2. The average number of perceived service quality was 4.16, with the highest "reliability" (M = 4.30); the average leisure benefit was 4.17. Among them, the average of “aesthetic benefits” was the highest (M = 4.33). 3. Gender, age, weekly class schedule, and educational level are related to significant differences in perceived service quality, while age, seniority, education, and dance types are related to significant differences in terms of leisure benefits. 4. Perceived service quality has a positive correlation with leisure benefits (r = .581, p < .05). The correlation between "care" and "educational benefit" was the highest (r = .509, p < .05). 5. The perception of service quality is predictive of the leisure benefits (R2 = .359). Among them, "responsiveness" is the main influencing factor. Conclusion: Most of the participants in the sports dance classes were young athletes for competition. Their main purpose is to pursue further training and achieve good results. It is hoped that through the curriculum design, a unique teaching style and the teachers' professional skills, the members can enhance their dance performance. By practicing dance posture, appreciating other students' movements, the members' sense of aesthetics and beauty would be fostered. Besides, educational benefits derived from teachers' care and instructions were a great addition. When students encounter bottlenecks in learning, teachers usually tried to help them find out the problems, and provided assistance immediately, which would contribute to improving their professional skills and enhancing their performance in the competition.

Secondly, the leisure benefits of sports activities in Penghu County reached the degree of correspondent in three factors including “social benefits”, “psychological benefits” and “physiological benefits”, and got Upper Level scaled scores. There were three suggestions of this study. First, in terms of subjects, due to the manpower and time limits, the range of this study included swim across Penghu Bay and triathlon activities in Penghu County. If future researchers focus on related sports activities in other counties or entire country, the data and result will be more complete. Secondly, in terms of study variables, there are many factors of influence on sports activities, and this study investigated two variables, motivation and leisure benefits. If future researchers investigate other variables such as satisfaction or tourism benefits, it will help to understand the importance of sports activities in every city and county. Thirdly, in terms of research methods, the investigation was conducted using self-report questionnaires, but the subjects, affected by social expectations, psychology, physiology and different values, may not give real answers. Besides, in quantitative statistical research, the results can be inferred only by numbers instead of the subjects’ feelings. If future researchers use other research methods, there will be more correctness, integrity, reliability and validity in the research.

In the development of capitalism, sports and the media have formed a niche market that adds value to each other's interests. The valued contents provided by sports have become the main stream of revenue and a powerful propaganda tool for media operators (Bolotny & Bourg, 2006). From the three major revenue sources (i.e., broadcasting rights, advertising sponsor and box office receipts) of professional sports can also demonstrate the importance and influence of the media for the sports industry (Wang & Huang, 2015). In Taiwan, only the CPBL’s competitions have regular broadcast in the season. The rest of the sports competitions are mostly broadcasted by mission or played on the platforms in addition to TV. The broadcasting of Ice hockey is also broadcasted by mission and is only available on the Internet platform. After searching related theoretical frameworks, the Global Media-Sport Complex proposed by De Moragas et al. (2003) and is a microcosm of the global movement media mode of operation. This framework is mainly based on the interaction of the broadcasting unit, sports organization, sponsors and public relations (i.e., fans) and is suitable for exploring the interests of each unit on this matter while broadcasingt the target event. Therefore, this study adopted the Global Media-Sport Complex and used the 2017 IIHF U18 World Hockey Championship Level 3 Group as the case to analyze the current status and broadcasting benefits of the focal ice hockey event. The main results were summarized below: (1) The sport organization and broadcasting agency both wished to promote the sport of ice hockey through broadcasting. (2) The relationships and interests of each unit on this matter in the ice hockey event were as follows: The guidance unit provided funding to the sport organization to host the tournament. The spors organization advocated sport policies and improved the visibility of the guidance unit and commercial units by organizing the event. Commercial units provide sponsorship to the sport organization to host the tournament. The sport organization payed the broadcasting fees to the broadcast unit so that fans can watch the game. (3) The benefits between the sport organization and broadcast organization are different from the original framework. In the original framework, the broadcasting organization payed fees to the sport organization to gain broadcasting rights. However, the sport organizatio had to pay fees to broadcast organization for broadcasting the tournament. (4) Government involvement was a new finding of this study. The government was the guiding unit that sponsorsed the tournament for subsidies. The primary goal was to raise the international visibility of Taiwan and to promote the sport of ice hockey. This research hoped to understand the participation benefits of relevant stakeholders by analyzing the focal event. The ice hockey events in Taiwan have become a normal broadcasting target. Fans who are interested in ice hockey can find the channel more easily so as to maintain their passion for ice hockey and to promote the movement of ice hockey in Taiwan. Ice hockey is still a minority sport in Taiwan. The findings of this study can be used as a reference for other sports so that the sport industry can create greater benefits through broadcasting.

Taiwan's first major international sports events, the 8th World Games, was hosted by Kaohsiung City in 2009 from July 16 to 26. It would be worth noting for the policy makers to know the economic benefits generated by hosting sport events. However, the event impact can be complicated and diversified. This study utilizes the survey data conducted by the government for the World Game economic investigation to obtain the views of the residents and visitors and to compare the differences before and after hosting the games in the public perception about the event or the image of the host city or country. The topic of this study focuses on the change of sports and recreational expenses in the proportion of income before and after the game. The analysis adopts the difference-in-difference (DD) method to reveal the consumption and sport differences between men and women. The results can provide information to the government as well as the sport business units on the policy effect of promoting the sports related markets. Moreover, the gender difference in sport consumption can help the sport industry better understand the market trends and accordingly provide their male and female customers personalized services or marketing policies.
