Full textThe research seeks to investigate processes and structures presently in Khayelitsha so as to ascertain whether they are operating, in such a manner that sporting people and government can rely on them to strike the balance needed, to reach a scenario where all the citizens of the country are afforded equal opportunities in sport. The White Paper (Revised: 2007) mentions the establishment of the Strategic, Monitoring and Evaluation Directorate to ensure focus remains on track with the latest development in sporting fraternity and that this is aligned with government priorities. However better resources are still handed out to advantaged communities. South African society has achieved somewhat miraculously, a stable democracy since the elections of 1994, but this new democracy has to realize that liberation comes with an added burden of responsibility. Hence communities and especially previously disadvantaged communities, need to even work harder to ensure social and an acceptable degree of economic transformation. The culture of entitlement needs to be discouraged in black townships. The Constitution, Provincial and Local policies allow for efficient sport management as sport is critical for development to take place. Sport is the most important vehicle to deepen democracy and bring about genuine transformation in society, forging unity of purpose at grassroots level so as to achieve same purpose and direction. Khayelitsha (as most of the black townships) has been hit by a wave of crime, drug abuse, alcohol abuse and gangsterism caused by the inactivity of youth. Sport can act as a catalyst to minimise tensions and maximise peace and harmony. This research focused on the efficacy of sport management processes and structures in Khayelitsha. It examined issues of provisioning, accessibility and maintenance of sport facilities in order to guarantee mass participation and infinite activism in sport.

Full textThe growing area of sport management in Brazil has shown itself in several ways. Aiming at the development of a country sport, it is necessary to provide the conditions for people to practice sports in its various manifestations. We believe it is important to reflect about the professionals who are charged with the tasks of planning and management of sports facilities and facing a lack of knowledge relating to professional, this study aimed to understand the differences and similarities of the manager profile sports facilities operates in different sectors linked to the municipal level through the survey, identification and analysis of issues relating to personal, education and functional characteristics. This research is characterized, as to the purposes, as an exploratory and descriptive research and, as to the means, as a literature review and field research. A questionnaire with 73 managers of sports facilities in the city of São Paulo was applied. Descriptive analysis of data relating to the profile and education, frequency analysis and exploratory factor analysis regarding the functional characteristics was performed. The result indicated that this work is mostly from males has higher education in Physical Education, a position he holds called \"coordinator of sports equipment\", has up to 2 years of experience and came to office by appointment. His functions are linked to the areas of maintenance and operation of the facility and has low performance in tasks related to the economic-administrative area. This professional has a proactive and reactive orientation, depending on the area that the function is inserted, indicating a lack of a managerial behavior pattern among these managers. We hope this study contribute to the generation of knowledge of exercise of the function of the manager of athletic facilities and the application of this knowledge in education and development of these managers in order to prepare it for a more assertive way to practice is possible. It is also hoped that this work will contribute to future studies on this occupation and other topics related

Full textSport has become the broadest common cultural denominator in almost all societies (Lapchick, cited in Gouws, 1997). As a result, sporting events have become an increasingly popular means for achieving political, cultural and economic benefits for the host nation (Parent, 2008). Consequently, this has led to an increased demand in the value of diverse skills in the sport event management field. This is to cope with the increased complexities surrounding sport event management and thus requires a distinct body of knowledge and skills to be developed (Quatman, 2008). However, concern over the lack of a relevant base of common knowledge (NASPE-NASSM, 1993) as well as pertinent training programmes to prepare sport managers for the contemporary sport events industry has resulted in current graduates not necessarily meeting the needs or expectations of the industry. As a result, there appears to be a gap between the current event management curricula outcomes at higher education institutions (HEIs) in South Africa and the expected competencies of sport event managers in practice. The aim is therefore to develop guidelines for sport event management training in higher education institutions on various HEQF levels (DoL, 2008) to address the competencies required by managers for the South African context. This translates into objectives, namely: i) to identify, conceptualise and unpack sport event management competencies required by sport event managers, ii) to investigate the curricula of sport event management at higher education institutions in South Africa, iii) to investigate the importance of different competencies required by sport event managers in South Africa, iv) to investigate the current level of competencies of practitioners regarding sport event management in South Africa, v) to provide a background on the current education system in South Africa and vi) provide guidelines for sport event management training in higher education institutions at various HEQF levels (DoL, 2008) to address the competencies required by managers for the South African context. The research design is descriptive in nature, with quantitative methods in the form of questionnaires utilised to collect the data. The sample includes trainers¹ from HEIs in South Africa offering sport event management, and subsequently sport event management, as well as practitioners² from HEIs in South Africa and sport event managers from selected sport companies in Gauteng.
"The management of football development programmes in Gauteng." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/3061.
Full textSouth Africa are the proud hosts of the FIFA 2010 Football World Cup™, and deservedly so. A significant effort has been placed in winning the bid and continues this continues to be the situation as construction and infrastructure are being put in place for event. Time is fast becoming limited, now with just less than three years to go, proper development is essential. Outside the rush and pressure to be ready for this event and the economic benefits that that are attached, the opportunity exists to divert some of that momentum into something that will last way beyond 2010 – sustainable youth development programmes and football clubs. This entails that grassroots development and youth football development programs are structured and sustainable in order for well-rounded, well-developed players to graduate from it for many years to come. This study set out to ascertain the extent to which business management principles are applied in the management of football, as well as to explore the availability and applicability of policies and programmes provided by government and the national federation. The exact population size was extremely challenging to determine, largely due to insufficient and non-centralised record keeping by national and regional administrators. A sample size of 30 (n=30) that was geographically representative of Gauteng, was drawn. Researcher-administered interviews, with questionnaires, were used in the investigation. Meaningful insight was provided in the fact that only 33% of the respondents were aware of the White Paper on Sport and Recreation South Africa and indicated that there was a degree of alignment to it. The study highlighted the fact that while this document, and other policies regulating and supporting sport and sport development nationally are available, the respondents indicated a general lack of knowledge of these tools made available by the South African Department for Sport and Recreation and its partners. The National Federation, SAFA, devote little effort to football development programmes and while strides are being made in this regard, the increments of success are very small and potential benefits do not materialise. One further aspect concluded from the study was the lack of a clear understanding of what sport development, and football in particular, encompasses, and thus what a development programme should include. Current football programmes were found to be lacking with regard to the holistic development of players, as well as coaches, administrators and officials, in areas that extend beyond the tactical and technical aspects of football.
Semenya, Karabo Shyllot. "Provision of public leisure services in the Soweto area, City of Johannesburg, 2002-2005." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/3480.
Full textThis study was conducted against the theoretical background that local government has the responsibility to provide public leisure services to the communities. Leisure provides an ideal medium for the transmission of historical, social, and cultural values that promote desired norms, customs and social orientations, as such, it is vital to the community. For disadvantaged communities to experience the benefits of leisure, government has a major role to play in the provision of resources. The aim of the study was to describe and analyse the provision of local government sport and recreation services in the City of Johannesburg, Soweto area and to present alternative forms of public leisure service delivery to aid in ensuring that limited resources are distributed to all. In order to achieve the aim of the study, it was necessary to: 1. Present responsibilities of local government with regard to the provision of sport and recreation in local government. 2. Evaluate whether resources are available for the provision of public leisure services. 3. Analyse the feasibility and implications of the user fee charge policy in public leisure services. 4. Present alternative forms of public leisure service delivery to the City of Johannesburg. Theoretical background was dealt with in Chapter two. The chapter started by briefly explaining objectives that direct services in countries like Australia, Britain, Canada and Brazil. Information obtained assisted in explaining that governments can legitimise their policies in very different ways and that service delivery is driven by what the country intends to achieve. Governance structure of sport and recreation in South Africa was discussed. Focus was mainly on local government and its mandatory responsibility towards public leisure service delivery. The importance of leisure provisions in fulfilling human needs was illustrated. Literature also indicated that personnel, facilities, money, equipment tend to influence each other to produce leisure services to the community. At the same time, user fee charge policy and marketing of services can impact on service delivery. Through the discussion it was noted that resources are limited. In view of that, it became vital to present alternative forms of public leisure service delivery. Literature presented also assisted in constructing an empirical research based on literature provided. The instruments used to collect data were two questionnaires. One questionnaire was for facility managers and the other was for regional managers/ area managers/ operational managers. A pilot study was conducted to test the reliability and relevancy of the questionnaires which were then adapted accordingly. The main survey comprised forty respondents. Questionnaires were sent to all sixty two sport and recreation facilities owned by The City of Johannesburg in Soweto for facility managers to fill and only forty were returned. Five questionnaires were sent to regional managers/ area managers/ operational managers and were returned.

Full textSport and recreation are important in communities because of the pervasive influence they have on all different aspect of the society (Mohlamonyane, 2005). One of these pervasive influences is the way in which free time is spent. For individuals to spend their leisure time productively, some type of facility is necessary. The provision of a range of leisure facilities that could host a wide variety of activities may increase the quality of life for people (Lourens, 1990). The management of these facilities will also indirectly influence the utilisation of the facilities, as the enjoyment and utilisation of the experience is closely related to the manner in which the sport facility is being managed. With the international sporting arena opening up for South Africa, the need for qualified and competent sport facility managers has increased as professional and ordinary sport people need equipped facilities to train and to participate in. Not only are competent sport facility managers necessary to manage these sporting facilities, but with the increased emphasis on professional sport, recreational sport has also seen an increase in participants who need facilities to take part in their recreational activities. This has resulted in the need to have educational programmes in place to train personnel and students in the field of sport facility management...
Pillay, Magalingam Atheeshey. "Students' expectations and perceptions of the sport offering at the Durban University of Technology." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10321/683.
Full textThe aim of this study was to investigate customer service quality at DUT. The objectives were: to identify students’ expectations of service quality in sport at the DUT; to determine students’ perceptions of the service quality in sport at DUT; to determine the gap between expectations and perceptions; and to analyse the relationship between selected biographical characteristics and expectations and perceptions of students, using a questionnaire developed from the SERVQUAL instrument. A total of 400 students have completed the survey during the period May 2010 to June 2010. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Several service quality dimensions were identified and as expected, students’ experiences of service delivery fell short of their expectations particularly for the dimension. All the service quality dimensions in the students’ surveys of sport at the DUT contain negative mean gap scores. From these findings the Sports department at the DUT can identify more specifically the failures in its service quality and seek to improve upon them. Service quality dimensions that are deemed to be good predictors of service quality for students of the DUT sport offering have been related to factors such as the “Tangibility”, Reliability”, “Responsiveness”, “Assurance” and “Empathy. It can be observed that all these dimensions have highly negative mean gap scores. Consequently, the Durban University of Technology will have to address these dimensions more precisely in its attempt to improve its service quality, especially the “Reliability” Dimension, which has emerged as the most important service quality predictor.

Full textThis report aims to demonstrate the tasks and learning done during the internship that took place in the sports division of Sintra City Council to achieve the Master degree in Sport Management. The main objective was to experience activities and tasks in sport, to understand the functioning of a local authority. The work is structured in 4 parts. Firstly, the introduction, which consists in explaining the conditions and objectives of the Internship. The second is the framing of professional practice, which underlies the tasks performed throughout the Internship and which fits the different contexts: legal, institutional and functional nature. The third part, professional realization, where I describe my tasks, some difficulties and solutions for them throughout the report. And finally, a fourth part, where I make a brief conclusion of my intervention in the division, the knowledge acquired during the internship and also the master’s, and perspectives for the future. Due to the diversity of the tasks performed, I structured the professional achievement in 3 major tasks: Sintra's sports card; LimeSurvey: online method design and collection; and the participating sport events. Using LimeSurvey has come to the need for more efficient data collection, no longer using paper, but an online collection, this will be extremely important for updating and creating new information for Sintra’s sports card, which meets the need to carry out the national sports card. The events participated were a way to get in touch with new learning, in another area, which carries out one of the sports division biggest projects, the “Sintra a Correr” trophy, is creating a sport for all for over 25 years. Local authorities play an extremely important role in the development and promotion of sport in the municipality, not only by creating sport for residents but also by building new leisure and competition sports spaces, supporting associations and use the most of natural spaces. The municipality of Sintra has these spaces, the sea and the Sintra mountain, in west, having a high growth potential.

Full textThe fact that South Africa is back in the international sports arena, puts a lot of pressure on the South African sportsmen and women. This also gives the South African sports people the opportunity to show the world that they can participate with the best and win. Unfortunately this pressure highlighted some other shortcomings in the South African sports world. Some of these shortcomings are the standard of training, the lack of international exposure, the management of the sport federations and the lack and quality of sport and recreation facilities. The political stance of the past, contributed towards imbalances in sport and recreation in South Africa. The Government of National Unity of South Africa is trying to correct these imbalances. The importance of sport and recreation is reflected in the 1994/1995 budget as well as in the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) of the government. One of these imbalances that is addressed in the providing of sport and recreation facilities to all the communities. The reality however is that the government can't build facilities wherever the need is. This reality in the field of sport and recreation adds to the pressure on the manager. of sport and recreation facilities. This pressure implicates that facility management involves far more than just the upkeeping of fields and buildings.

Full textIn contemporary society, sport is a major social event. A paradigm at the level of the factors of specialization, in the organizational, political and institutional dimension. Due to its ability to mobilize wants, feelings, emotions and universal appeal, sport is considered one of the largest social phenomena in the world. The management of sport is a professional activity that requires high skills, specialization and essentially deals with effective decisions, routines, processes and practices to solve problems by applying theories and management tools tested in other areas of knowledge and adapted to the reality and dynamics of the sport. This is a 150-year social process that has developed in the light of the growing importance of sport as a multifaceted social phenomenon (spectacle, leisure and recreation, training and health), with growing economic implications in the context the lives of citizens, organizations and countries, implying innovation and creativity in the provision of services provided to the consumer, in order to meet their needs. Nautical tourism is an increasingly popular type of alternative tourism that is defined as active vacations in contact with water, through activities such as navigation in sailing boats or yachts, as well as other leisure and sports activities that involve the enjoy nature in this context. Portugal has a unique climate in Europe for activities linked to the sea. With 2800 km of coast, rivers and dams. The thesis project is part of the PhD in Human Motricity, in the Specialty of Sociology and Management of Sport. In this context, the general idea of the study is related to the need to know if an archetype / sports facility serves the needs of consumers of nautical tourism, in the nautical aspect of recreation as well as local players namely: public and private entities and local agents that provide this type of services in the domains of the central coast of Portugal, particularizing the sub-region of Baixo Mondego, especially in Figueira da Foz. In this sense, we hope to contribute to the study, in an effective way, to an awareness of the benefits of the nautical tourism sector in Portugal, in particular with regard to the implementation of new sporting, differentiating, innovative, sustainable, environmentally friendly and which above all fulfill as the purpose for which they were intended. On the other hand, and focusing on the present research is intended to know which factors that contribute to a sports equipment (prototype) meets the needs of consumers of nautical tourism in the sub-region of the central coast of Portugal - Baixo Mondego. It is a qualitative research that aims to describe, understand and interpret behaviors, facts and phenomena, from the perspective of the subjects. This is a qualitative and interpretive investigation based on a case study, the questionnaire survey being the primary data collection technique, complemented by secondary sources, by documentary and content analysis, based on access to official documents such as theses, books, normative frameworks, technical opinions, plans, based on an in-depth, systematic and organized fieldwork, complemented by direct observation, conversations with several key actors and various photographic records. According to Fortin (1999), the doctoral thesis is structured in a sequential way with the purpose of achieving the stated objectives, consisting of three distinct phases: conceptual phase (eight chapters), methodological phase (two chapters) and empirical phase (two chapters). The conceived model of sports / prototype installation is a "New Concept", a differentiator and necessary for the coastal region of our country, in particular the municipality of Figueira da Foz. It is based on a format adapted to the different requirements and contexts of practices and consumption of tourism, respecting the needs of the practitioners and potential interested parties, based on the characteristics of nautical tourism, nautical pleasure, leisure, competition and training, informal practice, comfort, training, research and innovation in the manufacture of materials, clothing and accessories to practice the different modalities. In this sense, it is accepted that the concept can be applied and replicated with regard to the needs of physical activity and sport in the most varied aspects.

With the two days of rest carried out, people''s needs of sports fields are increasing. Since there are 40 percent of sport facilities located in schools, it is important to make them open to public access, which is to solve the problems of the lacking sport facilities. In fact, It has been long that the government policy commands schools to open their sports facilities by official lows. However, it is inefficient. Swimming facilities are studied as objectives in this research to understand the difficulties for schools to operate their sport facilities. It is researched that swimming facilities in schools, including high schools, vocational schools, and under, are not only insufficient but also unequal in quantity. Moreover, only 13.6 percent are heated pools. It is of great urgency to built swimming facilities in schools. Focusing on the present school swimming facilities, this research takes Taipei municipal junior high school swimming facilities as objectives. In the ways of interviews and questionnaires with schools, we can understand their operating situations and the difficulties which they are faced with. It is found in this research that the main problem which the present junior high school swimming facilities are faced with is the shortage of manpower and fund. The Taipei City Government knows the problems above. However, with the shortage of finance, it hopes to transfer the operation of school swimming facilities to non-governmental circles, under the Principle of Taipei Municipal Possessions Entrusting to Operate, but there is no successful case so far. In order to solve the problems for school swimming facilities, such as insufficiency, inequality, and the difficulties of operation, this research studies the validity if the Law of Promoting Non-governmental Circles to Participate in Public Construction is suitable for school swimming facilities. In this research, by interviewing the operators of non-governmental swimming facilities, we can understand their operating situation, and investigate their views about taking charge of school swimming facilities. It is found that most non-governmental operators think it valid for non-governmental institutions to be in charge of school swimming facilities. Moreover, the data from investigations are used to evaluate the validity of this program. The following are the conclusions of the research. If schools can give non-governmental institutions the preferential treatment to use schoolyards free, according to the Law of Promoting Non-governmental Circles to Participate in Public Construction, and allow them to set the charges, then it is practical to operate the present school heated pools in the OT way. In the ROT way, it will not attract investors in finance when non-governmental institutions rebuild the present cold swimming pools into the heated ones; these non-governmental institutions will not be willing to operate the school swimming facilities unless other inducements are added. In the BOT way to build new school heated pools, it is concluded in this research that non-governmental institutions will not be willing to participate unless schools give them the operating right at least ten years, for the sake of a reasonable rate of return.
