Abstract:
There is no information available in the scientific literature that documents a specific assessment protocol for analysing a soccer player’s maximal power capabilities. As soccer-associated muscular power has not previously been investigated, it is not known how important power is in elite soccer and, if it is, the physiological and genetic determinants of soccer-associated power remain unknown. Such information could be used to optimise soccer-specific talent identification and development strategies. With this in mind, the overriding aim of our thesis was to investigate the physiological and

Previous research has shown a large genetic influence over personality traits, especially sensation seeking. One gene thought to influence this behavioural trait is the dopamine-4-receptor gene (DRD4), in which variants have been associated with sensation seeking and novelty seeking in some, but not all studies. The inconsistencies between studies may be due to heterogeneity in both the behaviours and the populations being assessed. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior<br>CHAPTER 2: This study examined the variation in the cortisol awakening response (CAR) in relation to mood states and performance during professional swimming competition. Eleven athletes were examined during two consecutive days of competition. On each day salivary cortisol was determined upon awakening, 30 and 60 min post awakening, immediately before warming up for competition and 5, 20 and 60 min after competition. Psychometric instruments included the Profile of Mood States and self-reports of performance. CARs did not differ b

Title The genetic predisposition of a speed ability among the players of the 1st and 2nd Czech football league. Study aim To determine the impact of ACE I/D, ACTN3 R577X, AMPD1 Gln12X, BDKRB2 9/+9, IL1RN VNTR, NOS3 Glu298Asp, UCP2 Ala55Val polymorphisms genotype frequencies on the results of the speed ability motor tests. Methods DNA samples obtained from epithelial mouth were quantified and analyzed using the PCR method from 106 football players of the 1st and 2nd Czech football league (age 25,3 ± 4,69; weight 77,5 ± 7,33; height 181,2 ± 6,23). Abstract:
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common and complex endocrinopathy. The proposed pathophysiology of PCOS is a synergistic relationship between perturbed gonadotropin pulsatility, hyperandrogenism, insulin resistance and inflammation. However, the nuances of these relationships are yet to be fully elucidated. The biological origins of PCOS are driven by heritability and a polygenic predisposition that is exacerbated by environmental factors (e.g. obesity). Therefore, the aetiology of PCOS is considered multifactorial. While familial clustering of PCOS symptoms is well documented, providing

Abstract:
Exercise training provides health benefits to the general population, but there is considerable variability in the individual response to similar training. Some people have limited improvements following exercise (“low responders”), while others seem to improve considerably (“high responders”). To date, most exercise studies that have claimed to identify “low” or “high” responders assumed that if the participants were to repeat the same exercise training, they would show a similar response. However, within- subject variability has not been tested, which might lead to inaccurate classification

ACTN3 has been labelled as the ‘gene for speed’ due to the increased frequency of the R allele encoding the α-actinin-3 protein in elite sprint athletes compared to the general population. The results of the first study of this thesis demonstrate that elite athletes who express α-actinin-3 (ACTN3 RR genotype) have faster sprint times compared to those who do not express α-actinin-3 (ACTN3 XX genotype). Further analysis indicates that the ACTN3 genotype accounts for 0.92% in sprint speed amongst elite 200-m athletes. In study two, the same quantitative genetic epidemiological design applied to

Abstract:
The development, implementation, and performance evaluation of new techniques for the location of hot spots in proteins and exons in DNA using digital filters are presented. The application of bandpass notch (BPN) digital filters for locating hot spots in proteins is first investigated. A technique is proposed for designing the appropriate BPN filter for a specific protein sequence in which the area under the amplitude response is minimized to achieve maximum selectivity for a chosen stability margin. The minimization is performed using the golden-section search. A tuning technique is al
