Norris, Tiffany D. "Journalist as Information Provider: Examining the One-Voice Model of a Corporate Sports Account." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2016. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc862743/.

Abstract:
While journalists were once viewed as gatekeepers, dispensing news and information via one-way communication channels, their role as information provider has evolved. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the social networking site Twitter, where information seekers have unprecedented access to information providers. The two-way communication that these information seekers have come to expect can be challenging for organizations such as ESPN who have multiple Twitter accounts and millions of followers. By designating one team of people as responsible for the organization's largest Twitter account, SportsCenter, ESPN has sought to establish manageable methods of interacting with this account's followers, while furthering the goals of the organization and providing sports news around the clock. This study provides a better understanding of the group responsible for ESPN's SportsCenter Twitter account: the motivation and strategies behind the group's Twitter use as well as the dynamics of this network, such as information flow and collaboration. Relying on the Information Seeking and Communication Model, this study also provides a better understanding of information exchanges with those outside the network, specifically a selection of the account's Twitter followers. Additionally, the role of journalist as information provider and certain themes that emerged from the content of the tweets are discussed. The research employed social network analysis and exploratory, descriptive case study methods. The results of this study contribute to social network and information theory as well as to journalistic and information science practice.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to examine what Swedish elite athletes’ experiences, opinions and ideas are about Swedish sports journalism. We wanted to understand how sports journalism works through the athletes’ point of view, since there is a symbiotic relationship between professional sports and the media. To approach this we carried out a qualitative study based on seven personal interviews with elite athletes representing seven different sports. The theoretical frames used in this study are symbolic interactionism, the agenda-setting theory, framing theory and the sports media complex. The result shows that according to the athletes the journalistic content depends on a range of components, the most important being the relation between the journalists and the athletes, which is mainly based upon the journalist’s knowledge and participation. The sports media complex, which explains the symbiosis between sports and media, is very explicit in our results and so is how journalists set the agenda for the audience. We discuss whether distorted coverage and insufficient knowledge can result in the citizens not getting a chance to fully understand the reality of sports in Sweden and how stereotypical journalism communicate certain meanings and values about sports to the audience.

Abstract:
During the 20th century, the relationship between Media and Sport were very fertile. The revenues generated by the sale of broadcast rights, the Communication and the Media have a great influence over the global success of football. Media and sports organizations have a relationship based on tensions and cooperation and also very fluid boundaries between them. In this present work, we want to understand how media influence sports organizations, more precisely, how football clubs become a space of content and information production. Recently, sports organizations have invested on media and communication departments, either by hiring public relations and media professionals or by creating their own corporate means of communication. We have selected as research objects, the media of three sports organizations: the WebTV of Paris Saint-Germain (France), the website of Botafogo (Brazil) and the subscription TV channel of Benfica (Portugal). Our empirical work was based on ethnographic interviews with the media and communication staff at these football clubs. Based on our interviews, we aim to answer three questions about the creation of these club owned media: why they were created; how they are structured; and who is responsible for their implementation. The choice of these three clubs allowed a comparative study and the analysis of different markets and realities with diverse levels of modernization, that together with each local social context made possible an attempt to offer a generalization about club owned media and the consequences for sports journalism and the relationship between sport and media

Abstract:
They are supposed to be emotional and then barely closed from the detachment required by professional excellence. This dissertation uses cross materials (archives, interviews, ethnography, and content analysis) to give a broader picture of this occupation. It shows that sport journalism’s history has to do with sport business and the legitimization of a market driven journalism. However, such a market driven conception makes do with - sometimes critical - proximity with its object. Such a mass media conception of the sports news is reproduced via schools of journalism. It is all the more efficient since this schools’ teaching fit the economical reality and students’ expectations toward their future work as a “universe of consolation” to pursue their passion for sport. Sport journalism is still regarded from a legitimist point of view as a low-grade journalism, it occupies nowadays a very central position in the professional hierarchy. Then, once should reconsider dominant norms of journalism. Furthermore, the specialists feels “on their place” as they consider their work as a “universe of consolation” to pursue their passion for sport

Abstract:
Sports journalism is a traditionally male-dominated environment. Previous research has shown that women sports journalists were outnumbered in newsrooms, had less career opportunities, have been exposed to harassment and must negotiate identity contradictions in order to succeed in their career. Most previous studies have explored English-speaking countries and little was done in Scandinavia and Latin America. This study aimed to analyze the perceptions and experiences of Swedish and Brazilian women sports journalists from gendered journalism cultures perspective, drawing a comparison between these countries. Through qualitative approach, this study conducted semi-structured interviews with seven women sports journalists from Sweden and Brazil and found that there are more similarities than differences between the two countries. Despite the different contexts, Swedish and Brazilian women sports journalists who participated in this study are overall satisfied with newsroom environment, they claimed that women journalists have gained more space, respect and voice in sports departments in comparison to when they started working in the field. However, they also pointed to some remaining issues such as sexist jokes and a feeling of having to prove their knowledge and capability. Another similarity observed was the perception that sports journalism has highly improved in relation to gender equality and, although the challenges still exist, they are less visible now. This study also found that the biggest difference observed between participants from Sweden and Brazil was the understanding of sexism and woman identity. While Swedish interviewees showed a more complex awareness of these concepts, Brazilians participants demonstrated some confusing comprehension, exposing more contradictions regarding these matters.

Abstract:
This qualitative study aims to analyze the lived reality of women working in sports media today. Through systematic analysis of 12 in-depth interviews, the findings of this study suggest that the adoption of technological advancements in news media and all associated outlets have created a leveling effect for women due to the demand for highly skilled individuals who can handle the digital demand of modern news production. This study suggests that longtime gender disparities in sports media are experiencing a bit of a reprieve due to the massive digital audience and the need for professionals who can deliver information quickly and efficiently and with accuracy. However, the persistent symbolic annihilation of women as well as hegemonic hiring practices that emphasize aesthetic appeal have created a difficult path for women to move off the sidelines and into roles with more creative and analytical breadth, even with a rapidly increasing demand for jobs in the media industry.

Cuccoli, Rosarita. "The place for social analysis in the press coverage of sports : a comparison of sports newspapers and general press in Italy's media ecosystem." Thesis, Rennes 1, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020REN1G001.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the coverage of sport-related matters of social relevance in daily newspapers. Sports benefit from massive media coverage but even though the extent of sports reporting allows to deliver, in principle, a multiplicity of subjects and angles of analysis, the coverage of sports tends, in reality, to focus on a limited span of topics (the wealthiest sports and athletes, the most lucrative tournaments, etc.). Moving from the concern about whether or not the coverage of sports reflects the full extent of the sporting phenomenon, the study has engaged in the elaboration of a new taxonomy of topics to define the wider “social dimension”, or social analysis, in the media coverage of sports. This taxonomy, intended as both a conceptual and operational tool, is at the core of the study. The thesis has then engaged in the content analysis of over 6,500 newspaper pages, taking the Italian press as a case study. The analysis has been conducted with a view to compare social analysis in the coverage by general-interest newspapers with that in sports-specialised newspaper. This approach also constitutes a significant contribution to knowledge, as sports newspapers are hardly ever examined as a category in its own right. Italy was chosen, among other reasons, for the presence of multiple sports newspapers. Finally, considering the current decline of press circulation, the thesis also shows the business potential – or “business case” – of social analysis in the coverage of sport, and why this can attract, perhaps unexpectedly, new readers

Abstract:
The impact of a female sportswriter's presence on a newspaper staff was examined by content analysis, studying photo and copy space devoted to both male and female sports coverage. Composite weeks, one each from each quarter of the year following the woman's date of hire were selected from the only four newspapers in the state of Indiana hiring female sportswriters. Compared to similar Indiana newspapers without female sportswriters, those with female staffers were found to devote more copy and photo space to women's coverage in the entire sports section, and on the sports section front page, papers with female sportswriters used more photos of women and devoted more total space (photos and copy) to women's sports coverage. The effect was consistent regardless of the newspaper's market size.<br>Department of Journalism

Abstract:
It’s no secret that women face challenges in certain industries that their male counterparts do not, and the sports journalism field is no exception. The historical male dominance of sport and the restrictive locker room men’s club mentality tends to extend to sports writing and broadcasting. While strides have been made since the passing of Title IX and court rulings that have allowed women sports reporters into locker rooms, the sports journalism industry lags behind when it comes to progress. Lack of gender diversity on sports desks, in decisionmaking positions, and in roles that men have dominated for decades all contribute to this stagnation. Women in sports are continuously touted as the “sexy sideline reporter,” are accused of lacking knowledge because of their gender, and receive criticism for the sound of their voice. Despite these challenges with sexism, female sports journalists of decades past and today are the front line fighting for change so that a new generation can be inspired and make women in sports journalism the norm, rather than the topic of a thesis. The industry is not perfect and has a long way to go. But slowly, progress is being made.

Baxter, Lucy. "An investigation of occupational segragation in radio sport journalism." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/6637.

Abstract:
The present study was an investigation of the occupational structure of a national sport department in a public corporation. The goal was to determine whether occupational segregation was occurring, and if so what were the processes underlying this situation. Questionnaires were administered to the personnel of a public radio station (n = 23) and subsequently interviews (n = 14) were conducted with a sample of personnel from the department, including the positions of reporter, producer, executive producer and manager. Official documents, particularly those concerning employment equity from the CRTC, were also analyzed. It was found that occupational segregation is occurring in this department, both vertically and horizontally. The dual queue theory was adopted to explain the labour market dynamics operating to perpetuate differential employment opportunities for men and women in radio sport journalism. It was discovered that although highly qualified white women are currently at the top of this particular labour queue, it is mainly a result of pressure from two main factors: the fact that it is a public company regulated by the CRTC, and the move on the part of the personnel from jock journalism to investigative sport journalism. Barriers operating to perpetuate the fact that women do not consider sport journalism as a viable career opportunity include lack of access, lack of work experience, the jock environment, stereotyping, power dynamics, lack of sporting contacts and networks, lack of mentoring or training programs. Processes occurring to reduce women's access to radio sport journalism are contextualized within the wider society, and recommendations are made, including one emphasizing the necessity to conduct an industry-wide analysis of employment opportunities for men and women in the sport media.

Abstract:
The focus of the study is an analysis, to what extend nationalist positionings are used in the online mediation of sports. The empirical study focuses on how nationality is represented and constructed in textual output. In addition, the study compares the findings of a content analysis conducted in Germany and the UK. As critical case the coverage of the 2012 UEFA EURO Championship qualification in 2011 has been selected.Previous research shows that nationalism in mediated sports within the traditional media is represented through various approaches. The usage of national identities and the construction of difference have been observed by researchers, such as Dixon (2000), Bruce (2004), Malcom (2009), Stocker (2009), Chesterton (2011) and others as mechanisms of nationalism. Furthermore, the developments and trends in the genre of sports journalism have been studied by researchers, such as Schlegel (2007) and Schmalenbach (2009), in regards to the journalistic profession, economical interests and tendencies in writing. The most important theory for this research has been the construction of difference in media output as well as how national identities or nationalism is represented in textual output. Most influential for this study are the theories by Stuart Hall (1997) and Teun van Dijk (1991). A definition regarding nationality and nationalism is based on the Danish researcher Jorgensen as presented by Östman (2009).The empirical study collects articles published on the two most visited websites / portals from Germany and the UK. 81 articles have been studied through a quantitative content analysis. From the empirical study it has been concluded that in both countries nationalist positionings are represented through constructions of difference. However, it needs to be noted that journalists in Germany and the UK are using different approaches. In Germany, country names and variations are used to create distance between the home and the other teams. In the UK they are used to strengthen their own national identity. Sources and quotations of the home teams are overrepresented to underline the connection between them and the audience. Pronouns and comparatives / superlatives are used to construct an “us-versus-them” relationship. Pronouns are more important in the UK for this approach, while in Germany it is mostly comparatives / superlatives. The frequencies of the different constructions vary, but all of them are used regularly in online sports reporting and confirm that there are nationalist tendencies in sports journalism.

Abstract:
Enfin, le troisième l’interprète par la projection d’un probable devenir<br>The future events, non actual and still unknown, are often similar to meaningless phenomena on a rational and well-founded way. Nevertheless, written press journalists regularly report the big current events to come in the national dailies. It means that many political, sports and cultural events, which are media scheduled, have not yet occurred. Bearing this in mind, this doctoral thesis depicts the process of " proactive mediatisation ", which aims at understanding how some journalists from Le Monde, Le Figaro and Libération objectively succeed in giving a meaning to the Beijing Olympic Games several years before their staging. A qualitative and comprehensive study, built on theoretical tools from phenomenology based sociology, has been carried out. It enables us to analyse the social and cognitive logics leading the journalists in their prediction, which reveals that the anticipation of this big sports event is the result of a argued journalistic process built on three intermingled schema. The first one contextualizes the event from cases observed in the present time. The second schema identifies this event in facing other past events typically similar. The last schema interprets the Beijing Olympic Games by forecasting a likely future

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine gender bias in sports media from the perspective of the sports columnist. The research analyzed 1,082 sports columns written by ten columnists (five male, five female) at newspapers across the United States. The columns were scrutinized to determine if the column subject was male or female. Results found that 84.4% of the sports columns were written about male athletes or men's sports compared to only 9% devoted to female athletes and women's sports. The research also found that female sports columnists write about female sports 12.7% of the time, while male sports columns only dedicate 6% of their columns to female athletes or women's sports. Newspapers with a larger circulation were more likely to have sports columns about female sports than were newspapers with smaller readerships. Six of the columnists were then interviewed to get their opinions on gender issues in sports journalism.

Apurado que o futebol é o “desporto-rei”, também reconhecemos as preferências desportivas dos leitores quer a nível clubístico quer a nível das “modalidades”.<br>The object of this research is to analyze the content of six Portuguese and Spanish daily sports newspapers: A Bola, Record, O Jogo, Mundo Deportivo, Marca and AS. In order to understand this specific field of journalism, the study attempts to establish the differences and similarities of sports journalism in both countries, a research which was centered on a sample of newspaper articles collected between 15 October and 15 November, 2013. Starting from a historical context, the study moves to a systematic, objective and quantitative analysis of the newspapers’ content and includes several graphics. It is possible to identify a parallel development at editorial and discourse levels as well as in the content of the articles. The study also establishes that the number of newspapers sold in the capital cities is higher than the number of those sold in the second largest cities of both countries. Finally, the study confirms that football is the "beautiful game" and also identifies each newspaper readers with a specific football club and with other sports.

Abstract:
My work on the sports pages of the Sunday Times led to invitations to write two books on the emergence of elite female champions and two unauthorized biographies of female champions, all of which included original data and analysis of gender issues in sport. One of the first academic, self-reflective analyses by a sports journalist, this dissertation written for the PhD by prior publication, places my work in the context of the profession and considers my contribution to understanding how elite champions have used their agency in sport. Contributions in the works submitted include re-theorizing the ―feminine apologetic‖ with regard to elite champions, documentation and interpretation of agency and constraint in the career of Martina Navratilova, identifying and modelling the backlash role of gymnastics, and interrogating the gender frontier; all are critically analysed here. In this dissertation, issues of journalistic practice including the advantage of bias are considered, and the ―doping apologetic‖ is identified, named and preliminarily modelled. My work both benefits from and contributes to the cross-disciplinary, inter-linked analysis of women‘s sport in the social sciences and in sport and women's studies, and has been cited in the literature. Contravening conventionalist journalistic stereotyping of female champions, it documents and evaluates how champions have attempted to gain opportunity for themselves, and how their strategies may have affected the paradigm of femininity.

This project aims to determine if and how the relatively new journalistic tool of Twitter is impacting journalistic decision-making and news production as a legitimate tool amongst sports writers. Using the methods of qualitative textual analysis and in-depth interviewing, this project analyzes the words and tweets of nine journalists at prominent U.S. newspapers in an attempt to fill a void in research among the topics of journalistic decision-making, sports journalism, and Twitter and to answer questions that arise from the marriage of a certain type of journalism and a particular new media platform.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to contribute to a deeper understanding of the underrepresentation of women working as sports journalists at local newspapers in Sweden. This study also aims to investigate how the Swedish Union of Journalists works to improve gender equality for female sports journalists. A qualitative semi-structured interview method is used to fulfill the aims of the study. The theoretical framework used are Kanter's theory of tokenism and Altheide and Snow's theory of media logic. The results shows that sports journalism faces a number of challenges in the work for gender equality, such as an excluding masculine culture, harassments in the field, difficulty of finding women to recruit and a need to prioritize more women in sports media to make women a more natural part of sports. The Swedish Union of Journalists mainly educates, provides equality projects and support female sport journalists regarding unequal conditions.

Abstract:
This study examines from a gender perspective how the gender distribution is viewed in the content of Göteborgs-Posten's sports pages and the short and long term effects of the the newspaper's gender equality plan that was introduced in 2005. It is a quantitative study for two sample periods, 2005 and 2009, that investigates how many articles in the newspaper which is about women's sports and male sports. Michel Foucault's theory of discourse is central to the study, his view of identity in society and how these are represented fit well on gender issues in sports journalism. The results show that women's sport is greatly subordinate to man's sport in terms of number of articles. The gender equality plan has not had any noticeable effects on Göteborgs-Posten's sports pages. This is due to a variety of factors – economic aspects weigh heavily in this problem.<br>Denna studie undersöker utifrån ett genusperspektiv hur könsfördelningen ser ut i innehållet på Göteborgs-Postens sportsidor och vad tidningens jämställdhetsplan, som infördes 2005, fått för kortsiktiga och långsiktiga effekter.

Abstract:
Title: ”It’s about mental factors” – Examining how a “winner’s mentality” is portrayed in Swedish sports mediaThis essay aims to explore what the Swedish sports media means when it discusses the term of a “winner’s mentality”, through a discourse analysis. More specifically this essay studies how the language in nine different sports papers in Sweden construes the meaning of the word by combining it with different signs and through the use of metaphors, a commonly used linguistic trick in Sportugese. The articles selected for analysis were all published in a one month span between the 8th of December 2016 and the 8th of January 2017. This particular period of time was selected because it included the 2017 World Juniors in ice hockey, a tournament in which the Swedes have placed fourth three years in a row, and which sparked a debate in the Swedish sports press about the team’s “winner’s mentality”.The study found five major themes within the sports journalistic discourse. A major aspect was focusing on the athlete´s psychology, their self-confidence and their will to win. This closely resembles the discourse in popular psychology, more specifically self-help texts where the readers are encouraged to change through active will. Another major theme was that of a winning record. According to the sports press, if an athlete or a team wins more often than not than that proves they possess a “winner’s mentality” and helps them win in the future as well. The essay also found differences in “winner´s mentality” based on a cultural aspect. Swede’s ability to win was downplayed while Americans were praised for their unusually strong mental abilities. This is also found in Swedish self-help texts and might indicate a much larger discourse in national identity at work. The two last themes identified were the importance of experience, and also that a “winner´s mentality” could be affected by a large amount of external factors.Overall the study found that the discourse was in disagreement within itself. A “winner´s mentality” could mean plenty of different things, and in some cases actively opposes itself. Another finding was that the sports press rarely reflects on the meaning of the term and instead mostly uses it as a rhetoric weapon or to make a point across. This raises the question whether or not the term has an actual use within sports terminology and debate if it can be interpreted in many different ways.

Abstract:
Jill Jackson was one of the first female sports journalists and a pioneer voice for women in athletics. Although heretofore overlooked in the history of American sports journalism, the story of her career is an addition not only to the historiography of female sports journalists but also to the broader study of women in the mid-twentieth century. Jackson was admired, a hard worker, from a prominent New Orleans family, and well educated, yet she still was treated unequally in her primary workspace—the press box. Jackson left well-documented story to the Nadine Vorhoff Library and Special Collections at Newcomb College Institute in New Orleans. The collection, comprised of scrapbooks, photographs, letters, and newspaper articles, reveal the struggles and rewards of her impressive career.

Abstract:

This study examined sports photographs in fifty-two issues (thirteen issues each) of The Source Sports, Sports Illustrated for Women. Sports Illustrated and ESPN Magazine for gender differences in the way athletes are visually portrayed. Duncan and Sayaovong's 1990 study was used as the foundation for this new study. The content analysis revealed quantitative differences in photographic depictions of female and male athletes. Like the previous study, gender differences were found in the overall number of photographs of female and male athletes. These photographs were then broken down into one-half page, full-page and pull-out photographs. Gender differences were also found in the number of male and female athletes on the cover of the magazines, and the level of activity or inactivity associated with athletes. Unlike the previous study, the researcher found no gender differences in prominent and supporting positions when both men and women were featured in a photograph and no difference in camera angles.<br>Department of Journalism

Abstract:
Most of the analyses dealing with gender models in sport medias lead to the same conclusion: a strong conformity to sexual order. Widely studied in Anglo-Saxon literature, male and female media representations in specialized sport magazines are particularly representative of what CONNELL (1987) calls the hegemonic masculinity and the emphasized feminity. On this basis, this thesis compares the results of these studies by meticulously analysing the gender models presented in specialised mountain bike publications. As mountain biking is an equipped outdoor activity, it is at first sight be associated to male and female models which are quite remote from the most traditional definitions of the sex categories. The analysis of the corpus, based on three main magazines in the field: Vélo Vert, Vélo Tout Terrain and VTTMag confirms at first the strong presence of the most extreme aspects of both hegemonic masculinity and emphasized feminity. But some riding contexts or specific statuses among the Mountain Bike circle provide the readers with much more innovative gender models, quite remote from the traditional media representations. Studying the Mountain Bike circle by focusing on the gender model construction in specialised publications permits to question the role of media in the production of a legitimate definition of the activity, but also to underscore the doxa (BOURDIEU, 1997) that structures this field of practice in terms of sex social relations. The analysis of career paths and journalistic practices shows that two distinct kinds of journalists exist. Based on opposite professional identification processes, these two profiles lead to more or less critical relationships with the Mountain Bike circle and the gender models enhanced in them. Moreover, these sex social relations which prevail among the editorial staffs prevent women from being heard. Insufficient in number, weakened by their status of freelance journalist and male journalist's wife, they come up against the strong male sociability which is in force in editorial offices, genuine places of construction of a "Mountain Bike masculinity". Beyond the importance of the production unit, the publishing unit, and more precisely the different publishing houses, their history, their organization, highly influence the position of each title, strongly orientating the modes of mise en scene of gender models

Abstract:
The aim of this bachelor thesis was to examine how Swedish tabloids portrayed Sweden’s greatest female boxers Mikaela Laurén and Klara Svensson the time before and the time after their great meeting at Hovet the 10th of September. We examined the following questions: Which gender roles are given to Sweden’s greatest female boxers Mikaela Laurén and Klara Svensson in Swedish tabloids and how is the interplay between media and the figures in the text described in the Swedish tabloids?   We used narrative analysis to investigate 14 texts from Aftonbladet and Expressen which were related to the match at Hovet. We found that the two boxers were portrayed differently. Laurén was portrayed as the bad girl who had to fight hard to get to where she is. She is tough and she is the one that comes with mean comments and gives media the real intrigues and she likes to use props. She believes she has a greater purpose, to get female boxing acknowledged on the media agenda. Svensson is portrayed as the good girl, she is more girly and is portrayed as if she seems to think that she is a better person than Laurén and therefore pity her when Laurén creates drama in the media. Svensson tries to convince the media that she is a tough girl but is still portrayed as more girly. Both Laurén and Svensson were also portrayed with their roles outside of boxing, as girlfriends which is common for female athletes. The meeting seems to be perfect for both the media and the boxers team. The meeting is portrayed as the final battle between good and evil.

Abstract:
There has been a considerable growth in research in recent years into the history of both journalism and sport, two hugely influential areas of popular culture. The two fields cover a wide spectrum of interests and there is much ground that is common to both. However, studies of journalism and the growth of the newspaper industry have largely ignored the role of the sports journalist and the place of sport within a developing press. Moreover, studies of the expansion of commercial sport and the games-playing habit, whilst touching on the place of the press in their development, and utilising newspapers as primary source material, have paid little or no attention to the place of the sports reporter in the promotion and recording of the sporting sub-culture. This thesis aims to address the shortcoming in current research with a study centring on the growth of the occupation of sports reporting from the mid-Victorian era to the inter-war years. The thesis notes the adoption of sport as a circulation aid by the popular press, considers the type of recruit attracted to sports reporting, the job's practical aspects, the position of the sports journalist within the editorial hierarchy, and the acceptance of sports reporting as a legitimate specialism within a widening editorial agenda. The career of journalist James Catton is introduced to the study to examine in detail the manner in which occupational trends impacted upon the individual reporter, and in order to trace the manner in which sports reporting could be said to have adopted a 'professional' outlook during the period of this study. The thesis reveals the uncertain standing of the sports journalist within the newspaper industry, the part-time nature of much sports reporting, with sport regarded as an occupational rite of passage for the young and the trainee, and the struggle to rid the occupation of a reputation sullied by a perception of hackneyed journalism. The biographical section of the thesis introduces a contemporary voice, that of James Catton, to let it speak to an experience that might otherwise prove difficult to capture. Catton's working life highlights the possibilities and the demands of a career in sports journalism, and the success that the adoption of a 'professional' approach to the work could secure.

Abstract:
For a country whose identity is much bound up with sport, little research has been done so far into Sports journalism in Australia. This study traces the changes that have occurred in the reporting of sport in the West Alustralian between 1901 and 1971. This time span has been chosen to cover the period from Federation to the point when sport acquired its own section at the back of the newspaper and sports editor Ted CoIlingwood retired after 32 years in the job. In this seventy year period, January and July of every seventh year are taken as a sample to map out the developments in sports journalism. The months January and July have been chosen so as to capture both summer and winter sports. The newspaper's editions of these two months in the eleveo periods were assessed both quantitalively and qualitatively. The quantitative study shows the amount of sport reporting, all the column space devoted to the various sports. It confirms that the amount of sports reporting has been on a steady increase ever since 1901, except for tbe war year 1943.

Abstract:
This research is based on Systemic-Funcional Linguistics (SFL) and Corpus Linguistics, and aims at the investigation of the image of journalists construed in the press. Journalists are, by definition, storytellers, not characters; they are supposed to relate the facts neutrally, without expressing opinions. Their expected role is the one of the impartial observer of reality. However, linguistic studies have demonstrated that there is no such thing as a neutral text. The facts that will be told in the story are sellected, and beyond that, discursive choices themselves convey ideas and beliefs. In this research, the analysis of news texts is based on Systemic-Functional Linguistics (Halliday 1994, 2003) which makes it possible to characterize the image of journalists that is projected by the discursive choices found in the analyzed stories. One way to investigate those choices is through Corpus Linguistics (cf. Hunston 2002, Hoey 2006, Stubbs 2006), that allows the study of a great number of texts, widening the analytical possibilities. The corpus used in this research is composed of 1.050 news stories published in three Brazilian newspapers and collected through the Internet and library archives, during two specific socio-historical moments: the first month of the invasion of Iraq led by the USA, in 2003, and the FIFA World Cup in Germany, in 2006. The texts collected had the journalists or the journalistic activity as subjects. The time periods were chosen considering that, during wars and international sports competitions, there is a higher concentration of news stories about journalists. The analysis was based on the collocation of the words jornalista(s); besides locating and attempting to classify each occurrence of these words, according to the experiencial metafunction (Halliday & Matthiessen 2004), an attempt was also made to identify and classify the processes used with them. Results indicate that journalists usually constitute a distinct group, apart from the general public, and also from supporters and viewers (in the World Cup), and from civilians and soldiers (in the War). At the same time, their human side is apparent, during the World Cup, when they laugh at jokes, complain about results, help their colleagues; in the War, this human side is even clearer, in face of constant risk and dangerous and fearful situations. Above all, journalists are represented through idealized characteristics, as professionals who raise reactions in the public, work under harsh conditions, and stop at nothing to do their job.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to illustrate how the Swedish tabloid press construct their sports sections front pages and what they present on these pages. A second purpose, and by the first following, was to investigate the items these newspapers offer the audience to add to their daily agendas. The aim to show a bigger picture of the front pages content was reached by implementing a content analysis of 196 front pages from the two largest tabloid newspapers in Sweden, Aftonbladet and Expressen, during a period of four years. The study examined 98 items per newspaper and since the aim was to examine sports journalism the units were chosen from the two newspapers sports sections, Sportbladet and SportExpressen. The great conclusions that were made during this process were the differences in between genders, the dominating sports and what big part sponsors have in sports. The most common front page shows a Swedish man playing football in the age between 20-35. A less common page is woman, playing any sport. She is only found on nine of a hundred front pages. As in the case of men, football is the dominating sport in Swedish tabloid press. On second place we found ice hockey. What we also could find was the big part sponsors have in sports. We saw the logos of sponsors on every second front page.

Abstract:
This thesis attempts to explore the discursive construction of Olympic ideology in the 2008 Torch Relay news coverage by the British and the Chinese media. It applies a corpus-based Discourse-Historical Approach in Critical Discourse Analysis (DHA-CDA) to analyse how and why the complexity, contradiction and conflicts in linguistic interpretations of Olympism are demonstrated by the media discourse between East and West. This study first focuses on the underpinning ideology and the study of the media, considering the historical development of Olympic ideology (Olympism) along with the respective mainstream ideologies in Britain (Liberalism) and China (Harmony), as well as the philosophical foundations and prominence of CDA. It then draws on the elaborated analytical approach-corpus-based CDA-in detail to analyse four specially constructed corpora drawn from the China Daily, BBC News and The Guardian. Thereafter corpus techniques including frequency and concordance analysis are applied and results obtained that reveal comparative differences and diachronic shifts across the corpora. Having first described the data, they are then interpreted in their linguistic contexts, and subsequently explained in the broader historical and socio-political contexts surrounding the dynamic life of the Olympic Torch Relay. This study demonstrates that there are contrasting expressions of Olympic ideology in the media discourse of the two countries. At a deeper level, this social practice is revealed to be dominated by the mainstream ideologies of the hosting and participating nations, which have been entrenched throughout their respective histories. The involvement of Britain and China in Olympic history and the relevant socio-political events surrounding the 2008 Torch Relay are explored in order to inform our analysis. The conclusion to this thesis reinforces its significant contribution to the study of Olympism. The Olympic philosophy of integrating diversified ideologies was certainly not manifest in the confrontation between the eastern and western media in 2008. Liberalism and harmony had never confronted each other face to face on the world stage before or attempted to find a common ground on which to coexist as revealed in this study. Based on this, respect for and tolerance of diverse ideology, history and culture will hopefully promote the solidarity and prosperity represented by Olympism in the new era.

Abstract:
This paper attempts to identify the changes which occurred in the treatment of sport in the Portuguese sports press. Since 1970 there is a comparative analysis among the leading publications dealing the sport. Initially, only the sports paper A Bola, and Record and, later, O Jogo. These three newspapers are now the benchmark in sports journalism and over the years have been growing and evolving, either through graphic innovations in sport or treatment of either the football or other sports too. The main objectives of this work are realize what or which sports where lies a more prominent by the Portuguese sports papers as well as the teams that also deserve greater emphasis on the headlines. To this it was chosen an age of analysis. Thus, the period chosen for analysis was the month of April that also provides and requires the presence of football in the spotlight. Portugal is a major consumer of football and therefore at a time when they begin to reckon the champions, in April, there is an even greater need to spread the sport on the paper covers. This time, one of the main conclusions drawn in this work, it is the much greater presence of football as 'beautiful game'. Football exceeds any sport with regard to the presence it has on the covers of newspapers. Another important conclusion is also the amount of news for the three big teams of the I Liga soccer. The SL Benfica, Sporting CP and FC Porto are clearly teams that stand out on the front pages of the sports newspapers, earning then a significant advantage over other clubs of Division I and the other, as well as international.

Abstract:
The aim with this thesis was to investigate how the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet construct and reproduce imaginations of gender and gender order. An important premise for our work is the agenda theory, which states that media has great impact on what is on their audience mind. We chose to investigate how Aftonbladet wrote about two Swedish footballers, Lotta Schelin and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, during a European championship with each players national team. By using a method of critical discourse analysis based on Teun van Dijks idea and with gender glasses, we analysed eight articles and two chronicles regarding each player. Our results show that Aftonbladet construct and reproduce gender and gender order by its different ways of portraying Lotta Schelin and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Articles regarding Lotta Schelin tend to be more audience oriented, focus more on her and her teammates emotions and more often focus on things outside her profession as a footballer. On a contrary, articles regarding Zlatan Ibrahimovic tend to upgrade masculinity, power and more often highlights his performances on the pitch. He is also portrayed as a person of much greater status than Lotta Schelin.

Abstract:
Gilles Villeneuve, Ayrton Senna, Greg Moore, Dale Earnhardt. Only four of a number of high-profile race car drivers to have lost their lives taking part in events at the highest levels of motorsport. The aim of the present study is to analyze the coverage of death in high-level motorsport in the printed sports news of La Presse and The Toronto Star in Canada for the 1982 to 2017 period inclusively. Mobilizing the existing literature on risk-taking, namely Lyng’s concept of edgework, as well as Hall’s work on representation, a thematic analysis of a sample of sports news articles (N=488) was conducted. Three main themes emerged from the analysis. The discussion surrounding motorsport fatalities revolved around the individual (the deceased driver), the social aspect of the death (primarily the family members left behind), and journalistic practices (how to cover death). In conclusion, the coverage of death in motorsport was found to be an instance where the athlete is heroized and sometimes revered even decades after their death. In this aspect, the figure of Gilles Villeneuve remains pivotal to motorsport discussions in Canada, even to this day. It also was found that sports journalists, through their coverage of deadly accidents, enact the traditional roles of the journalist in offering social criticism of their subject matter to their readers, and that motorsport drivers enact a highly specific type of masculinity when practicing their sport.

The paper makes an analysis of the material opinionated about soccer in two newspapers of Porto Alegre, Zero Hora and Correio do Povo, focusing on chronic around disputes between Grêmio and Internacional, and also interviews with the authors of the selected columns. Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to study and examine the differences between culture and sports journalism to examine what the grounds of the differences are, and what the consequences are for our understanding of culture and sport in society. Why do sports and culture journalism sound so different? And, what does it mean? Through detailed study of two Swedish Radio news programmes, Kulturnytt and Radiosportens nyheter, the differences between the two genres is made evident and concrete. The differences are analysed through concepts as genre, hegemony, dichotomy and the division between high and low social status. The conclusions of this dissertation are that the division between sport and culture is kept stable by journalistic genres, which in turn is created by the expressions differences in social status. Culture and sport's historical background and contemporary place in the discourse is thus reflected in the journalistic differences. The results of the genre examination are interpreted in a radio piece, aiming to clarify how the differences are constructed by reversing the genres. How would it sound to report on culture as if it were sports, and how could a story about a sport event sound using the instruments of culture journalism?
