Abstract:
The purpose of this text is to present the current context of journalist education in Serbia, the necessary teaching models and the overall importance of their academic education at higher education institutions. It is primarily focused on the field of sports journalism, considering the popularity of this field (sports) and this area of journalism (sports), as well as some attempts to unjustifiably marginalize it. Aimed at highlighting the specificity of the moment in which the entire journalistic profession operates today, its challenges and responsibilities on the one hand, and connections between sports and journalism (media) and academic education in the domain of sports journalism in Serbia on the other, a specific research was conducted among sports journalism students, many of whom are already engaged in journalist newsrooms. Therefore, a special segment of this research is dedicated to the importance of adequate education of sports journalists (but also beyond this field) at higher education institutions, and it is detailed in this text through obtained results and findings. These should depict the current state in this context, as well as the accompanying paradoxes and possible development perspectives. Indirectly, they should also emphasize the importance of improving this relationship for the world of journalism and the media as a whole, as well as the entire society in which they play a very important role.

Abstract:
It is impossible to imagine journalism without ethical norms and rules. All journalists, regardless of the field in which they work, must always adhere to these norms. This is primarily due to the nature, function and scope of the media. The audience meets any article in the media with great sensitivity. The journalist must thoroughly investigate the facts and events and not make mistakes. The journalist must be especially careful in his statements and examples. Thus, touching a person's reputation is unaccepted not only in society, but also in journalism in general. The journalist must distinguish between criticism and insult and see these differences.
A journalist's professional ethics and professional duties are in harmony with each other. In the context of professional ethics, debt is considered an important quality. The professional ethics of a journalist regulates his responsibility to the public - readers, listeners, viewers for accurate, objective information.
Professional ethics has emerged in the form of historically unwritten "laws". In general, a person based on the voice of conscience, justice and socially accepted rules in any field of activity has two main goals:

 to raise the level of necessity and appropriateness of the profession in addition to the executor of this profession;
awareness of responsibility to society and people. As journalism serves people and society as a public institution, it can face a variety of challenges on a daily basis. One of these problems is ethical principles. The article discusses how sports journalists follow these principles.

Abstract:
Broadcasting journalists use short, ad hoc interviews for newsworthy events. Because these interviews typically last for just a few minutes, it is a challenge for both journalist and interviewee to address the audience. This study explores journalistic questioning techniques in sixteen live broadcast interviews with athletes carried out by Estonian journalists during the 2018 Olympic Winter Games plus a few examples from sports interviews collected from the Spanish, Italian, Finnish, German and American television. Analysis shows the questioning technique of journalists does not help interviewees to provide well-focused and interesting explanations. The main problems are related to the scope of the questions, blurred focus and the journalists’ inability to use listening-based questioning. As a result of the analysis, we propose a universal model that would help journalists in any field (not just sports journalism) to carry out better ad hoc questioning.

Abstract:
Integration and efforts to include women journalists are increasing as a result of advocating for a more inclusive media, including in sports desk. However sports journalist broadcasters are limited, as seen from the way women athletes are covered at various levels, the representation of athletes who get the spotlight as well as the focus on sports industry issues that get coverage priority. This literature review uses the scoping literature review method - a literature discussion on women sports journalists - and Bourdieu's framework to understand sports journalism as doxa and its influence on women journalists and other women workers in sports journalism. Experiences and decision making of women journalists were analyzed with the perspective of Gender Psychology based on previous researches from Journalism, Communication, Sports and Media Studies. The literature analysis resulted in a mapping of the various issues faced by women sports journalists, as well as describing the dynamics and identity negotiations that were experienced. The existence of women sports journalists influences the way sports desk works, the issues and focus of their work, their writing styles, and their strategies in the workplace and sports media as institutions. Women sports journalists create a space to work through their daily lives.

This was an extension of research by the same authors (2010) that investigated sports reporters’ perception of their use of Twitter as part of their professional journalistic duties. Using content-analysis methodology (N = 1,008), the authors investigated how sports reporters actually used Twitter. Analysis showed a discrepancy between journalist responses and measured content. Although journalists said they were using Twitter for breaking news and promotion, the dominant result of the content analysis was commentary and opinion. There were also differences related to print and smaller media outlets. The implications of such differences are discussed, including a possible paradigmatic shift in journalists’ approaches.

Abstract:
Fabrizio Romano’s sizeable social media followings and role as influencer–sports journalist warrant attention. Romano, known for his catchphrase ‘Here We Go’, specialises in football transfers and produces multi-platform content. This study investigates how Romano’s Twitter practice informs professional understandings of sports journalism. A content and textual analysis (n = 494) was conducted of one month of Romano’s tweets and replies. Tweets were categorised according to markers of sports journalism practice. Results show Romano is professionalising sports journalism on social media and subverting understandings of personal branding through favouring objective news over subjective opinion and focusing on the professional rather than the personal. Romano’s transfer news prioritises major European football clubs, which is consistent with the trajectory of sports journalism on digital platforms. Play-by-play commentary is a minor aspect of Romano’s Twitter output, which contributes to the debate on the significance of game coverage to contemporary sports journalism. Tweets did not mention the human rights issues surrounding the World Cup starting in Qatar, even though this was a key talking point. This finding suggests that the normative assumption that sports journalists should scrutinise power and/or highlight social injustice does not always apply to all practitioners in all contexts, particularly where ultra-specialist settings are concerned.

Abstract:
This article examines the tension between journalistic and entertainment values in live soccer TV commentary from the perspective of German commentators. We situate journalistic and entertainment values within the commentators’ wider understanding of their roles as sports journalists and commentators, looking at a specific type of sports journalist who has different responsibilities from the general sports reporter. We asked how soccer commentators assess the role of journalistic and entertainment values in their work, and what constraints they face, such as how the perceived expectations of their employer affect this assessment. We interviewed 28 TV commentators, one radio commentator, and one expert working for relevant German TV channels and streaming platforms, such as ZDF, Sky, and DAZN. While all interviewees see themselves as companions telling the story of the match, most commentators in the sample value journalistic values over entertainment values, a surprising finding in the hyper-commercialized world of sports television. Well-founded journalistic expertise and soccer knowledge are considered most important. However, this assessment depends on factors such as the broadcaster’s guidelines and the nature of the match. In summary, the role of the commentator is either an ‘objective mediator’ or an ‘emotional entertainer’, but this is a balancing act.

Abstract:
AbstractMass-media is often called „the guard dog of society” due to its role in alerting the population when an issue is identified and this aspect is feasible also in sports media. This research analyses the media’s roles, responsibilities and its relationship with whistleblowers. The main focus of this presentation is on methods used by journalists in order to identify and research sensitive subjects such as corruption, doping and other cases of harmful irregularities in sport. Based on interviews with journalists from Romania, using a qualitative interpretation of their speech, it will be possible to see behind the façade of the journalist-sources relationship. „How could we increase the rate of investigations and the number of whistleblowers in sport?” is a central question of this research. The study examines also how to ensure a more critical approach to the task of exploring the influences in Romanian sports and in what manner this case could be framed in the global context. It helps to understand the potential of sports communication and educational journalism to influence in a positive manner the dynamics of reporting everyday issues and eruptive scandals in sport. An inquiring and sceptical media could help more to enhance transparency and encourage other sports stars or sports people to take action.

The basis of the study is informational, axiological, culturological, systemic, activity approaches. The following research methods were used in the work : analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, and the generalization method generalization – to determine the main genre features of a sports report.</em></p><p><strong><em>Results</em></strong><em>. It was determined that sports journalism is a relatively new informational activity, it creates additional conditions for the development and promotion of sports literature, unites athletes and fans, informs, educates and entertains. The sports press is one of the auxiliary factors in the popularization of sports among the population. The rapid growth in the role of sport in the life of society leads to an increase in the need for organized and targeted information about this socio-cultural phenomenon. The article examines the theoretical aspects of the genre features of reporting in the Ukrainian sports press. It is emphasized that sports journalists traditionally resort to reporting as a genre most suitable not only for promptly displaying sports events, but also for visualizing their key moments, because it allows them to convey the dynamics and height of sports events, to convey to fans the emotions and excitement of competition participants, tell about all their twists and turns. Abstract:
This 2-part longitudinal study uses quantitative content analysis of newspapers to investigate gender dynamics in producing news on equality in sports. It analyzes differences in Title IX coverage by reporter gender to determine whether female journalists advocated more aggressively for women’s equality than their male counterparts did. The study’s first part uses content analysis of volume and placement of articles about Title IX, by journalist gender, and discusses the implications of how patterns of volume and placement have changed over time. The second part identifies advocacy and opposition frames used in the conflict over Title IX; applies content analysis of frames used, by journalist gender; and discusses implications of reporting differences and changes over time for equality. Evidence suggests that, first, social control; then a feminist perspective; and, most recently, a postfeminist worldview among female journalists influenced coverage of the law.

The relationship between news corporation and journalist has changed from employment to partnership. Therefore, it remains in doubt whether Maslow's hierarchy of needs still hold for staff management in today media industry. In addition, freelance journalist is himself a KOL and expert in their field and their follower helps the media platform increase the readership and click rate which translates into increasing their advertising revenue. As such, there is psychological contract which consists of intrinsic (Pay) and extrinsic values (other factors) and different expectation from both party on this employment contract in this new form of partnership. The aim of this paper is to examine from freelance journalists point of view whether Maslow's hierarchy of needs applies on them and what are the extrinsic values which hold them on this employment relationship with media corporation.

Abstract:
The large news newspaper and media corporation previously provides long-term and stable career for journalist to move up on the career path from junior reporter to become editor in chief. Maslow's hierarchy of needs has been used as the motivation paradigm to fulfil every stage of needs from physiological needs to the highest form of self-actualization needs. However, when the change of media market employment relationship and social media as the main focus of news content, more large media corporation uses contracted freelance journalist with expertise in their particular field as as finance, politics, sports, horse racing, travel, dine and wine as content contributor.

Abstract:
The professional role and responsibilities for sports journalists have evolved to now include using social media. In this study, we explore how male and female print sports journalists use Twitter to communicate with their followers about sports. Relying on previous research showing disparities in sports coverage and gender as well as assertive and affiliative language theory, we employ a content analysis of tweets from 57 sports journalists ( N = 4,897). We find that male and female sports journalists tweet at statistically the same rate, but male sports journalists are more likely to tweet about sports than female sports journalists, less likely to tweet about women sports and athletes, and more likely to use assertive language in their tweets. Findings are discussed with suggestions for future research.

The sociocultural context of sports journalists, comprising journalism on the one hand and the sports spectacle on the other, induces a conflict of interests. Journalists must endeavor to gain and maintain a minimum of professional credibility and sustain a close relationship with the source of information. This article presents two resolutive practices used by sports journalists as a means of dealing with this conflict. The first is the sports journalises ambivalent behavior toward the source of information. The second is the sports journalises use of a sociodramatic narrative feeding a loss-of-control scenario. These practices, respectively interactive and discursive, are discussed as well as their relationship to the sports journalise’s conflict of interests.

Abstract:
The importance and relevance of biographical research of the Ukrainian press figures, due to which it is possible to retrieve numerous little-known or forgotten unique names of Ukrainian culture, have been revealed. The journalistic work of the doctor, public and cultural figure, editor, publisher and photographer Stephan Dmokhovsky in the 1920s and 1930s has been analyzed. His participation in the establishment and functioning of a number of Ukrainian press publications in Galicia during this period has been elucidated. The Dmokhovsky’s figure as an editor, publisher and journalist has not yet been the subject of a separate study and has been explored only in pieces. Biographical information about him has been supplemented, Dmokhovsky’s active participation in the social and political life of interwar Galicia has been illuminated. His significant contribution to the development of the Ukrainian sports and amateur movement upon the West Ukrainian lands has been highligh ted. Forty-six of Dmokhovsky’s articles in the Ukrainian press of Galicia in the interwar period have been introduced for scientific use. The typology of Dmokhovsky’s articles on the thematic basis has been accomplished. The most pressing topics for Dmokhovsky were the interwar socio-political life in Galicia, development and Ukrainian youth patriotic education, Ukrainian sports achievements, photography, local cultural life, efficient management and peasantry education. The reviewed publications attest to Dmokhovsky’s high erudition and brilliant journalistic skill. He was able to write in an accessible and witty way on professional economic and artistic topics, therefore these articles deserve attention of contemporary media press researchers and historians. The need for a separate thorough study of journalistic achievements of Dmokhovsky’s emigre period as well as scholarly study of his personal archive stored in the Ukrainian Museum-Archive in Cleveland have been accentuated. Abstract:
The paper deals with the issue of the supervision of the media that frequently exceed the standards observed by journalistic circles and their social environments. The direct victims of breaches of deontological principles in the profession and work of journalists primarily involve the recipients, journalistic circles and the reputation of a given medium. There are also indirect consequences, such as a loss of confidence that translates into lower sales or reduced advertising. In the cases that are commonly termed media scandals a crisis situation emerges. The analysis of the problem and the recovery of a tarnished reputation and lost confidence of recipients are usually performed by teams of experienced journalists, appointed ad hoc by edi-torial boards or by press ombudsmen working in the media, which is much less frequent. This paper discusses both scenarios. Three famous scandals have been selected from among many examples. One involves the 1980 case of the journalist Janet Cooke from The Washington Post whose Pulitzer Prize was withdrawn after she admitted that her award-winning story was a fabrication. Another case is the equally high-profile case of The Los Angeles Times from 1999, which marked a conflict of interest, following the publication of a special issue devoted to the sports arena that was being erected in the city at that time. The third scandal occurred in The New York Times in 2003, and concerned mass plagiarism and fabrication of press materi- als by that daily’s reporter, Jason Blair. The attempts to regain reader trust involved, among other things, the publication of reports drawn up by specially appointed teams of press ombudsmen.

Abstract:
Introduction: In recent years, the presence of artificial intelligence programs in newsrooms has become standardised, which has allowed the writing of texts through algorithms. This research analyses the characteristics of sports chornicles written by artificial intelligence, comparing them with those written by journalists. The aim is to find out whether these types of texts have the same quality standards as those of chronicles written by journalists. Methodology: The methodology used is based on the content analysis of 28 journalistic chronicles, 14 written by journalists and 14 written by artificial intelligence programmes. In all cases, these are sports chronicles on matches corresponding to the Spanish Professional Football League (first and second division). Results: The results show that AIgenerated texts are effective in collecting and ordering data and in reporting game action. However, they lack many of the qualities of a sports chronicle, which are present in texts written by journalists. Conclusions: The chronicles produced by artificial intelligence do not represent a quality contribution to the journalistic genre, lacking analytical or interpretative character, in both cases qualities traditionally present in sports journalism.

Abstract:
The increasing consumption of sports content, the versatility of the digital world, the desire to rethink corporate sports journalism, and the need to generate new sources of employment have fostered the emergence of sports journalism ventures in Ibero-America over the last ten years. Many of these ventures are led by communication and journalism students and professionals. This research studies two online experiences in Spain and Mexico: Deporadictos (www.deporadictos.com) and El Míster (www.elmister.substack.com), in order to identify features of journalistic quality in these sports’ journalism ventures, based on the concept of diversity. A mixed methodology with a concurrent design was used, applying digital ethnography (qualitative) and content analysis (quantitative) methods. The results and conclusions indicate that the operation of these two cybermedia outlets displays characteristics of a certain journalistic quality and that, with some adjustments on information, economic sustainability, and user interaction, they have the potential to consolidate as an attractive and diversified informational option for their various Spanish-speaking audiences. Deporadictos from Spain and El Míster from Mexico are led by communicators, journalists, and other related professionals who lack strong corporate backing. This lack of strong support adds to the complexity of meeting the concept of journalistic excellence and maintaining sustainability over time.

Abstract:
Creating and maintaining an imaginary bond between the journalist and readers is a communicational strategy of the written sports news discourse. Since news discourse is monologal, it has specific communicational constraints that it seeks to overcome, and the lack of direct contact between the authors and their readers is a key hurdle to cross. Additionally, sport has a notable cohesive function, and as such produces a sense of a sports community even when taken as a news subject. The imaginary bond is therefore a strategy for overcoming the discursive gap between the journalist and their readers, while at the same time reinforcing the impression of community that the subject of sports draws on. In the sports news discourse this strategy is translated through different linguistic means, such as conversational elements. Based on selected articles from the French written sports news, a qualitative analysis of texts enabled us to observe the linguistic means through which the imitation of conversation contributes to the discursive strategy of bonding. The analysis is focused on informal and interactive conversational features. It shows that such conversationalization is particularly apparent in the informal character of the discourse on the lexical and discursive levels. This adds to the seeming informality of the communicational situation, and therefore to the readers’ sense of an imaginary sports community. On the syntactic level this is reinforced by interactional elements such as rhetorical questions and other interrogatives that address the reader as an interlocutor and echo the dynamics of a dialogue. Both conversational aspects, as used in the French sports news discourse, contribute to a sense of informal atmosphere and community bond among sports enthusiasts.

Abstract:
Across newsrooms and journalism schools, questions as to what constitutes or ‘counts’ as excellent reporting are currently inciting much debate. Among the various frameworks being put forward to describe and encourage ‘excellent’ journalism in its various forms, sport is seldom mentioned – a legacy perhaps of its perennial dismissal as trivial subject matter. This essay grew from our curiosity as to whether the reverse was also true: that is, whether and what those who study sports journalism and sports media – in particular sociologists of sport – have contributed to understandings of ‘best’ and even excellent journalistic practice. We identified and analysed 376 articles from eight leading scholarly journals that feature sports media research with the aim of examining instances where ‘excellent’ sports reporting was either highlighted, described or advocated. After outlining the major themes that emerged from this analysis, we reflect on why so few of the sampled articles explicitly advise on what best practice sports journalism might look like – especially when it comes to coverage of the sport-related social issues that sociologists of sport tend to focus on – and why so little theoretical attention has been afforded to the question of excellent sports journalism more generally. While there are good sociological reasons for focusing on problematic sports reporting, on structural and systemic issues in which media are implicated, and on producing alternatives to hegemonic sports media, we conclude that it is high time for instances of excellent sports journalism to be afforded the theoretical and empirical attention long granted to their ‘bad’ journalistic counterparts.

This study examined contemporary daily sports journalism through the lenses of media sociology and new institutional theory. In-depth interviews with 25 sports journalists (reporters and editors) identified the institutionalized norms, values, practices, and routines of American sports journalism; demonstrated how that institutionalization affects story selection; and showed how the profession is changing due to digital and social media. The interviews show that although traditional sports journalism is highly institutionalized, digital sports journalism is far less so. Traditional sports journalism is still centered around a story, and digital sports journalism follows Robinson’s journalism-as-process model. The journalists interviewed are expected to perform acts of both traditional and digital journalism during the same workday, which leads to tension in how they do their jobs.

Abstract:
This article deals with the biography of the elite Jewish-German sprinter, sports writer and left-wing political activist Alex Natan, „the fastest Jew in Germany“ (Alfred Flechtheim) during the 1920s. Hailing from an assimilated family of the Berlin Jewish-German middle class, Natan was for most of his active career a member of the bürgerlich sport movement, running for SC Charlottenburg Berlin. He achieved his greatest athletic success as a member of the club’s world-record equalling 4x100-meter relay squad in 1929. In addition to Natan’s athletic achievements, the article pays particular attention to his career as a left-wing sports journalist; his participation in the anti-Nazi resistance of civil servants in the Reich Vice Chancellery in 1933/34; his emigration to Britain in 1933; his four-year internment during World War II; the resumption of his journalistic career in the postwar period; and his support for the 1972 Munich Olympics. By focusing on his confrontations with Carl Diem and Karl Ritter von Halt, the article also engages with Natan’s vocal opposition to the rehabilitation after 1945 of sport functionaries who had collaborated with the Nazi regime.

Abstract:
From 1972 to 1981, José María García succeeded in the sports programming on the Spanish private radio network Cadena SER. His investigative, reporting journalism and his polemic style gave him a huge audience, advertising incomes and impact, which created a «García phenomenon» (Díaz, 1995: 346; Alcoba, 2005: 170) concerning «the most famous journalist in Spain» (Ferrer, 2016: 101). This paper analyses how his popularity was reflected in the advertisements paid by SER in the generalist daily journals, as well as if the García trademark generated differences on the advertising strategy of SER comparing to the other radio stations’ sports offers. Eighty-five ads were found from five different networks (SER, RNE, RCE, Radio Intercontinental and Radio España de Madrid) in Diario 16 and ABC. A denotative, connotative and strategic analysis sheet was applied to the corpus of the study, as well as a qualitative focus, to find the distinctive features of each one. The results show that, although some other private stations followed a personality-driven strategy, the public image of radio star García was used by SER to attract the listeners, but with a more significant prominence in the promotion of his regular programming rather than the broadcasting of live events.

Abstract:
Sports journalism is a special type of journalism that transmits information on sports topics and events. The stereotype that men can report on sports better than women is often encountered. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to discover what used to be the position and role of women in sports journalism and what it is today, to discover whether sports journalists face discrimination, what the public thinks of women in sports journalism and what future women have in this field. In this regard, the hypotheses have been set in according to which it is harder for women to succeed in sports journalism, further how female sports journalists encounter various forms of discrimination which results in less interest from women in sports journalism in general. In the research, we used general and special methodology, but also the historical method, with which we discovered the historical role of women in journalism in general and in sports journalism. The content first covered the special features of sports journalism and sports journalists, and then a research was conducted. Recent literature was used and surveys were conducted with different target groups. The results of the research determined the justification of the goals and the position of women in sports journalism and thus confirmed the set hypotheses. Based on the collected data, an analysis of the results was made, and further to the discussion, the conclusions were reached in respect of the justification of the goals and evidence of the set hypotheses. Continuation of research on this topic should focus on more sophisticated methods and the educational process in order to better represent the women in sports journalism.

FR.

This study focuses on the interactions of female sports journalists working in the Swiss-French daily press with their male sources. Female sports journalists work in one of the most male-dominated journalistic specialties, both in terms of the presence of women in the profession (only 13% in the French-speaking Swiss press, despite recent feminization) and in terms of media coverage. The study is based on observations of two daily newspapers and twenty-five biographical interviews, and demonstrates that, within this fieldwork identified as masculine, female sports journalists deploy femininity and stereotypes associated with it in their interactions with sources. Especially for non-disciplinary journalists (non-experts in the field of sports), vocational demands lead them to deploy such strategies. But mobilizing gender as a resource in their field work is also a “strategic identity” for most of them. In reversing the stereotype, they take advantage of being a woman and manage to gather information that they consider sincere and authentic and that allows them to develop a “feminine” approach to sports writing, whose quality is recognized within the profession. Nevertheless, very few women journalists manage to change the gendered power relations within their sector. Furthermore, the implementation of gender as a professional resource is ambivalent in that it also contributes to the underestimation of women's journalistic skills and undermines their professional recognition in the world of sports as well as their career in journalism.

PT.

Abstract:
U.S. sports operations have been described as newsroom “toy departments,” at least partly because of their deviation from journalistic norms. Recently, however, more attention has focused on issues of ethics and professionalism; the failure of sports journalists to adequately cover steroid use in Major League Baseball has also directed critical attention to their roles and motives. This study, through a telephone survey of journalists in U.S. newsrooms, examines sports reporters’ practices, beliefs, and attitudes in regard to ethics and professionalism and how their ethics and practice relate. Results indicate that reporters’ attitudes toward issues such as voting in polls, taking free tickets, gambling, and becoming friends with sources are related to their views of public-service or investigative journalism. In addition, friendships with sources are linked to values stereotypically associated with sports as a toy-department occupation. These results suggest that adherence to ethical standards is linked to an outlook that embraces sports coverage as public service.

Abstract:
Sports journalism in Australia has undergone immense change over the past decade, with many factors contributing to the widespread upheaval. Utilizing a representative survey, this study of 120 of the nation’s sports journalists provides insight into how journalists in a specialized sector of the media are operating during a period of transformation. While previous surveys of Australian journalists have focused on profiling sports journalists, this study offers an updated overview of the profession following a decade of change and provides an understanding of the perceptions of sports journalists on key issues in contemporary newsrooms. The findings highlight that there have been some substantial changes. Overall, the respondents paint a much gloomier picture of sports journalism in Australia than previously.

Abstract:
Researchers have extensively documented the issues in quantity and quality of media coverage of the Paralympic Games. The lack of coverage and stereotypical representations can be attributed to a variety of structural and cultural factors, notably including journalistic norms and values. This scholarly commentary proposes a reconsideration of journalistic values in order to argue that sports journalists have a professional responsibility to cover the Paralympics and issues of disability for at least three reasons: (a) The Paralympics are an elite-level, international sporting event and thus merit sport-focused coverage, (b) sport journalists have an ethical obligation to include diverse perspectives in reporting and to challenge stereotypes, and (c) sport is intertwined with social issues and requires contextualized reporting. The commentary concludes with recommendations for sport communication and journalism education.

Foley, Douglas E. "Making the Familiar Strange: Writing Critical Sports Narratives." Sociology of Sport Journal 9, no. 1 (1992): 36–47. http://dx.doi.org/10.1123/ssj.9.1.36.

Abstract:
Ethnographies of sports are generally thought to be critical if they employ a theoretical perspective that challenges conventional, mainstream views of sports. This paper contends that what makes sports ethnographies critical also depends on the narrative devices used to make such a familiar cultural practice seem strange. Various writings of postmodern ethnographers are reviewed to suggest some promising narrative experimentation that breaks with the earlier scientific realist narrative style. Some elements of a postpositivist definition of science and interpretation are also presented as the philosophical basis of these recent experimentations with narratives. Finally, the author’s own attempt to write a more experimental critical sports narrative on Texas football is contrasted to journalist H.G. Bissinger’s best-seller, Friday Night Lights. The strengths and limits of Bissinger’s “dramatic recall” narrative for creating a more reflexive text are considered. The paper concludes with some provisional suggestions for altering scientific realist narratives with what Van Maanen calls a more impressionist narrative style.

Abstract:
This article contributes to an emerging body of research that examines the transformation of sport, journalism and media practice in the digital era as part of what Raymond Williams has called the ‘long revolution’ of communications, culture and democracy. In so doing, we explore how Canadian sports journalists have attempted to make sense of, and negotiate their roles within, the practice of convergent sports journalism and the ascension of new online journalism values in the Postmedia Network. We examine the institutionalization of 24/7 digital sports departments within which Postmedia’s sports journalists labour to produce a continuous flow of coverage of major league sport – at the expense of local amateur events and women’s sport – to secure a digital audience commodity of male readers. We also explore Postmedia’s embracement of outsourced labour and production processes that have further altered the work routines of sports journalists and have undermined quality standards. Finally, we underscore how the expansion of the digital promotional networks of major league sport has contributed to the ongoing historical erosion of the status and influence of sports journalists in the sports–media complex and has spurred the rise of derivative analytical and opinion-driven content.

Abstract:
Given the local and global interest in sport, sport journalism occupies a place of considerable power and influence. As in other forms of journalism, sport journalists are focused on topical issues, as well as personal and lifestyle-related stories. In the case of sport journalists, this is centred around the challenges and achievements facing athletes, coaches, organisations and all those involved with the sporting industries. Some sport journalists pursue a career as reporters, while others may be editors. In some countries, this type of journalism is regarded as highly specialised, requiring long-term development of skills and techniques. However, this approach is not generally reflected in Azerbaijan. More precisely, some experts believe that the sports media remains in the shadow of other fields of journalism. Nevertheless, it should be noted that, despite certain shortcomings, progress has been observed in the sporting media of Azerbaijan in recent years. There are a growing number of dedicated TV channels, magazines and online portals. As Azerbaijan gains a global reputation for sporting innovation, there is a growing need for this focus on innovation to be reflected in the field sport journalism. Put simply, Azerbaijan has become a worldwide sporting success story. And it needs world- class journalists able to tell that story.
