Abstract:
The aim of the present study is to explore the use of the serious game Top Eleven as an auxiliary educational tool in a sports economics undergraduate course. This attempt is warranted by the fact that serious games can provide real life/work experiences and set the ground for managerial – economics skills development. The selection of the specific serious game is based on the ample and varied sports economics data provided and its free of charge online accessibility. Following the case study methodology, a virtual football club was created and managed within Top Eleven. The stated research questions were based on the analysis and application of the generated data to a number of economic concepts identified in a specific sports economics textbook. Based on the analysis results, twelve out of 17 in total identified economic concepts were successfully analyzed using eleven economic data sources of items embedded in the game. The implementation phase showed that Top Eleven could be used as an educational supporting tool in the form of virtual internship for gaining of practical experience by applying sports economic concepts for the financial management of a professional football club. It is argued that the game offers a sensible working environment in sports economics and the associated sport management field.

Abstract:
This article presents the results of a pilot study that found significant differences between U.S. and non-U.S. based international sport managers with regard to the educational background, language, and cultural training deemed essential for success in the global sports market. Educational and executive training programs in sport management should recognize sport's movement into a global market and consider providing students in their programs with the competency to compete for positions in sport on a global scale. To do so, sport management programs should offer a global perspective, which encompasses education for recognizing and avoiding potential barriers to effectively conducting sport business in societies where differences exist in language, culture, business, economics, and politics.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the locus of control and the sports manager behavior levels of the students studying in the department of sports management of the faculty of sport sciences. The study was conducted by the correlational survey method, one of the quantitative research designs. Population of the study consists of students studying in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades in the departments of sports management of the faculties of sport sciences from various state and private universities. The sample of the study conducted using the nonprobability sampling method consists of 718 sports management students (male = 452, female = 266). In the study, data were collected with the sports manager behavior scale and the internal-external locus of control scale. Data were analyzed by means of analysis of normality, t-test, one-way Anova test and multiple regression tests. The study found a significant difference between students' gender, grade levels, university type and sports manager behaviors. There was no significant effect of internal-external locus of control levels on sports manager behaviors. In conclusion, it was found that the students' sport manager behavior and internal-external locus of control levels were quite high, and female students have higher sports manager behavior levels compared to male students, and the higher the level of grade, the higher the levels of sports manager behavior.

Abstract:
AbstractThis study will attempt to describe the role of existing incentives which have a significant effect on Hungarian sport's performance. The aim of the paper is to understand why a large gap has emerged between successful elite sports and the popular but underperforming spectacular sport. According to the concept of dual competition, in addition to sport results, the analyzed fields also concern competition for resources, particularly for the attention of supporters and sponsors. The methodology of the analysis is fundamentally economic in nature; however, qualitative methods are also given emphasis, as the analyzed topic has specific characteristics. Based on new institutional economics, the study presumes that the behavior of organizations is determined by the decisions of bounded rational individuals, and highlights the significance of the created mechanisms and institutions.

Abstract:
The scholarship on the economics of individual sports is scant relative to that of team sports. This study advances sport management scholarship, particularly sport economics, by using consumer-theory modeling to estimate Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) pay-per-view purchases. Our generalized linear models show fan preferences for certain weight classes, star fighters, outcome uncertainty and comain event quality factors as well as scheduling preferences for holiday weekends. The popular notion thatThe Ultimate Fighterreality series served as the impetus for the UFC’s growth is supported in part. The study concludes by showing how the modeling results impact firm revenue generation via fight card characteristics.

Full text
Abstract:
[From the introduction]: The thesis is organised as follows. In Chapters 1 and 2 we present a review of the existing literature. Chapter 1 analyses the role of incentives and human capital attributes as mechanisms for determining performance. Much of the previous literature analyses manager performance using wage equations. What is unique in our approach is that we are able to generate a direct measure of managerial performance. The background to the methodology used is provided in Chapter 2. Here we explore the growing literature on production frontier analysis. We are particularly interested in the available estimation procedures and how previous sports studies have utilised this framework in estimating efficiency. A discussion of the football industry is the focus of Chapter 3, while in Chapter 4 we develop the theoretical model of manager performance. Data and methodological issues are addressed in Chapter 5. Chapters 6 and 7 contain the empirical results. In Chapter 6 we generate managerial efficiency scores and consider how alternative input and output measures and alternative estimation procedures affect these scores. Using the preferred model from Chapter 6, Chapter 7 provides a detailed account of how human capital factors and incentives shape efficiency and some preliminary results as to whether the manager actually matters. Finally, Chapter 8 provides some conclusions and recommendations in the light of the empirical results.

Abstract:
NBA general managers are responsible for all aspects of roster management and seek to acquire players with complementary skills. Ayer (2012) examines elements of roster composition, including player types and the impact of the composition of a team’s top two and three players on winning games. I expand the literature on roster composition by redefining player types and examining the impact of star and role player combinations on playoff success. Contrary to popular belief, I find that general managers should avoid superstar point guards, as teams featuring this player type tend to underperform in the playoffs. The results of this study suggest that teams should seek to acquire, among other player types, two elite wings, one defensive-specialist, and one three-point specialist, all found on a total of five championship teams from 1994 to 2013.

The focus of this dissertation is imperfectly competitive sports labor markets and the effects of league labor policy on player mobility, compensation, and job location choice. The analyses conducted herein contributes primarily to a broad area of research within sports economics that generally uses changes in league labor rules to examine employer monopsony power and the validity of the Invariance Principle, which states that the distribution of playing talent in a sports league is invariant to the ownership of the rights to players’ services. After a critical review of the literature and some background on the National Basketball Association (NBA), a broad-to-narrow approach is used to present evidence from three empirical essays. Essay one examines the effects of 40 years’ worth of institutional change on competitive balance in the NBA. Essay two investigates the effects of more recent free agency rules on player mobility and pay. Finally, essay three narrows the focus a bit further to the effects of nonwage job characteristics on player wages and the implications of such nonwage attributes for player movement.

Knoesen, Emma. "Compensating Against Turnover: Managers' Talent Retention Decisions in Major League Baseball Under a Budget Constraint." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2017. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/1057.

Full text
Abstract:
From 1997 to 1999 and 2003 to the present, Major League Baseball has had a luxury tax on high payroll teams. This paper analyzes the impact of the tax as a budget constraint on teams’ ability to reward and retain high performing players. In contrast to other papers, we use wins above replacement (WAR), a popular sabermetrics statistic, to measure performance. Using this metric, we quantify the number of top performers, how this performance is rewarded with salary, and how salary impacts players’ mobility decisions. We conclude that when using WAR, the distribution of performance is not heavy tailed and rather follows an exponential distribution. Our results suggest that there are fewer top performers in periods with a luxury tax/budget constraint. We use efficiency wage theory to understand this decrease in top performers as the result of a decrease in motivators. We understand two different mechanisms of motivating performance: (1) under a stochastic budget constraint, managers did not choose to extend the contracts of top players; and (2) under a fixed budget constraint, managers decreased the monetary reward for an increase in performance. Both these mechanisms decrease the motivation for top talent to perform highly.

Doyle, Harrison C. "The Efficiency of Human Capital Allocation In English Professional Soccer Via The Transfer Market System." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2013. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/672.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis attempts to determine the efficiency and impact of transfer fee expenditures on a club’s future performance in English professional soccer. Using net transfer fee activity data from the 2002-2011 period for the clubs in the top two divisions of English professional soccer, The Barclays Premier League (tier one) and the nPower Championship (tier two), in comparison with financial performance and league performance data over the same period, this paper will explore the implications of investing in human capital via the transfer market. Using correlation matrices and ordinary least squares (OLS) regressions as a means of analyzing both club-level and individual player-level datasets, this thesis strives to determine whether transfer activity has an impact on league success (now or in the future) or on key financial indicators that denote a club’s financial health. Ultimately, this thesis will demonstrate that transfer activity in isolation cannot be viewed as a component that definitively decides a club’s level of success, whether that be on the field or in the books.

Kim, MJ Min Jun. "Money Craving in China and Korea: Football Club Performance and the Share Prices of Owning Corporations." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2015. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1044.

Full text
Abstract:
This event study analyzes the share price reactions of the owning corporation investors in relation to the Chinese and Korean football clubs' success. Guangzhou Evergrande FC, Beijing Guoan FC, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC, and Pohang Steelers FC are examined which are owned by Evergrande Group, CITIC Group, Hyundai Motors Company, and POSCO Group, respectively. It is assumed that successful events of the football clubs such as winning championships and major players and head coach acquisitions will have a positive boost to the daily returns of the owning corporations. The results are strongest for Pohang Steelers FC but other football clubs also suggest similar trends. The findings offer some tangible support for the assumption that the recent global arms race in transfer spending by football clubs can create value for the owners and suggest that the investments may lead to positive returns.

Abstract:
This paper analyses the pay-performance relationship in the English Premier League in order to isolate the determinants of success by regressing individual player salaries, and salaries relative to team-mates on the individual performance measures of goals and assists. A weighted OLS and fixed effects model is utilized alongside various control variables to conclude that the positive pay-performance relationship found at the team-level is not reflected at the individual level. The paper also determines that relative income position and various team-effects do not significantly impact individual performance.
