Full textThe procurement strategies used by the organizations have been crucial so they can be kept competitive and meet demand of products and services that their clients need. This dissertation evaluates the applicability of the methodologies of Kraljic, Porter and PESTEL on the definition of strategies for the procurement and hiring department, with the objective of meeting the needs of the organization responsible for the execution of a Sports Mega event in an effective and efficient manner. In this theme, it is approached the characteristics that configure the complexity and criticality of this particular scenario are approached, configured by a temporary organization to meet the needs of the biggest Sports Mega event with inflexible definitions on timing and cost. The dissertation aims to develop through a methodology of a case study the presentation of differentiated strategies for each type of item through an analysis of diverse variables used on the making of a purchase. The objective was to evaluate the applicability of the traditional procurement field theories onto a specific case, of a Sports Mega event. An additional contribution of this dissertation regarding other studies focused on mega events of this size is the focus on the processes related to the procurement area. Besides treating the theme in a unique enterprise context and in a specific environment, where the conditions and supply market restrictions and specific legislation of the main country and city impact on the strategies. In particular, this case study compares the type of procurement strategy adopted in the Sports Mega event with the strategies presented on the academic theories on the theme, and points out the main difficulties experienced and mitigation solutions applied, due to the specificities of this case.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Reflecting a general trend in modern society, the world of sport has become information driven, with effective information management becoming an essential part of all sports organisations and sporting activities. The sophistication oflarge, multi-sport events - mega-games - such as the Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games demand a high standard of information management to help ensure the smooth running of such events. This is also true of the managing of national teams participating in them. In this thesis a model of an information management system (IMS) is developed for managing certain types of information in such events and the national team participating in them. The model is based on two conceptual frameworks: Intellectual capital, and secondly the information management cycle. The model is then tested using a number of case studies where a specific information management system was used to manage the information of different sports teams and events. The degree to which the information management system was effectively implemented in each case is evaluated and the results used to measure the correctness and accuracy of the model. Lastly suggestions are given as to how the model can be improved in view of the case study findings, and what the future role of information management in sports events may look like in light of the results.

Full textWhen we mention international relations, we generally talk about diplomacy and investment, but there are other ways of promoting the interests of a government on the international stage. Sport can be used as tool to improve diplomacy between countries, as well as developing economic and social interests. Additionally, sport takes an important place in shaping the image of a nation, while it improves the integration process of young generations into the world. One of the main interests, from a government perspective, in the use of sport, is to generate a positive emotional connection to a host nation - what is known as soft power. The aim of this work is to explore some of the ways in which sport is used to generate this power, and how it can provide a type of control or influence. Specifically, it will focus on the State of Qatar. This work is separated to three main parts. First I present the development of sport and the way sport events were used by different countries and political regimes, and the impact generated. Second, I try to understand the impact generated from Qatar investment in the French football team Paris Saint-Germain. And third, I measured the socio-psychological impact generated on the young generation from hosting international sport events, as in the case of the Handball World championship 2015.This work sets to clarify how allowing such investment is perceived as an opportunity for development within the society, and to improve diplomacy. Additionally, focussing on the young generation allows me to study the evolution of how sport is an important tool in the process of socialization of young people into global society. Based on my research, I argue that the result of the Paris Saint-Germain investment was a "win-win" situation between France and Qatar on the social, economic, and political level. Also, using sport events generated positive emotional impact, making the residents admire the vision of the government. The young generation, regardless nationality has a positive view of government efforts to improve and develop itself - the Qatari government's vision was salient to the young generation in Qatar

The purpose of the presentation is to analyze the main issues in the operationalization of a sports mega-event when thousands of volunteers become the work force without receiving any kind of remuneration, as Brazil will host, during the decade, important mega-events of that kind and will be in need voluntary workforce. For that reason, an explorative qualitative research was conducted, by means of individual interviews with volunteers having previous experience in sports events and with managers of the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee, in order to take a closer look at the analysis on incentives, event planning, organization during the event and the legacy in the vision of these two groups.
Dunkel, Carolin. "Ein Mega-Event für Japan und Korea." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Philosophische Fakultät III, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/16144.
Full textThe 2002 FIFA Football World Cup was co-hosted by Japan and South Korea but this co-operation was not a voluntary one. What would the two unequal partners make out of FIFA’s decision? Could the co-hosting become a chance to improve their relation? To interpret the World Cup in terms of Mega-Event theory helps to answer these questions. A Mega-Event is not only a unique chance to promote one’s image to the world but also to create a positive self-image and self-awareness. Both are important processes for the relocation of a nation in the international society and both are what the hosting of a Mega-Event is about. It is here where one finds the Korean and Japanese motivation to host the World Cup 2002. An analyses of the discours in both countries monthly magazines shows how different the expectations were and how Korean and Japanese fans experienced the Event. While South Korea’s first aim was to show to the world its equal standing next to its neighbor Japan, the topics discussed in the Japanese World Cup discours suggest that internationalization was what Japan expected from hosting the Mega-Event. But when the competition started and the Korean team rushed from victory to victory the only thing that mattered were the overwelming emotions of unity millions of Koreans shared. This experience provided an unexpected sence of national pride and self-confidence that changed the Korean self-awareness. This changed attitude might be the most important outcome of Korea’s World Cup hosting. The Japanese team was kicked out of the competition more quickly but this paved the way for many Japanese fans to get more and more interested in the Korean team and to discover an unknown and fascinating Korea. The Japanese who had cheered for the Korean team experienced an unity with Korea no other event could possibly have caused. In these ways the unplaned co-hosting and its unexpected outcomes served both countries’ initial aimes better than a single-hosted Mega-Event would have done.

Holding mega sports event can not only make the city well known to the public but also increase the revenue of related industries. For Taiwan’s cities, a mega sports event is not easily held and 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade is the most scaled sports event in Taiwan’s sports development. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impacts of holding mega sports event on the abnormal return of the firms of related industries. The study uses the data of TEJ (Taiwan Economic Journal) Financial Databank and event study module to test proposed hypotheses. The sample is composed of sports firms, the firms of tourism and recreation industry, and sponsors of the mega event, and totally 95 firms in this study. We find that the impacts of holding this Summer Universiade on the abnormal returns of sports firm, the firms of tourism and recreation industries, and the sponsors are significantly positive, indicating that the hypotheses of this study are supported. The study can further provide managerial implications to the government, the firms of related industries and the investors regarding the signaling effect of mega event application.
Weszka, Pawel. "Leverage of a sport mega-event branding : a case study of the 2010 FIFA World Cup." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/8779.
Full textThe primary objective of the study was to establish what brand leverage strategies could be implemented in sport mega-event branding based on the case study of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. The secondary objectives focused on discovering the dimensions of sport mega-event branding, investigating the areas of sport mega-event impacts and leverage, identifying sport mega-event brand leverage activation tools and understanding the role of mega-event brand leverage activation tools in the context of their potential influence on the development of small and medium enterprises in the host country. Deriving from the research questions and objectives, a theoretical framework of sport mega-event brand leverage was created. It provided a blueprint for seven hypotheses, formulated in this study. A quantitative descriptive design was employed by the researcher. A self-administered web based questionnaire was uploaded at the Statkon website at the University of Johannesburg. The researcher utilised a purposive judgement sampling technique which targeted small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from the Gauteng and Western Cape provinces in South Africa. The companies were registered on four major online databases in South Africa – The Box, BizConnect, BizNetwork and online Yellow Pages. The main study was preceded by a two-phase pilot where five individuals representing conveniently chosen SMEs located in the city of Johannesburg filled out a hard copy of the questionnaire in each phase. Once the researcher refined the questions following the second pilot, the main research took place. The total of 8 902 emails, containing the website link, were sent out with 239 returned questionnaires accepted as valid to be included in the statistical analysis (2,95% response rate). The questionnaire was available online for five months between July and November 2011. The researcher made use of factor analysis and the Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) in the process of data analysis. The exploratory factor analysis enabled a reduction in the total number of latent variables (factors). It was followed by the confirmatory factor analysis, which also computed the goodness-of-fit indices allowing for establishing how well the model explained the data. Once the number of factors were reduced, the EQuationS (EQS) software was used to investigate mutual relationships between different variables and testing the hypotheses. The summary statistics, such as mean, median and standard deviation also helped in the interpretation of the findings. The main finding of the research was that the destination brand (South Africa) was a significant predictor of co-branding and an integral element of the sport mega-event branding (2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa). Co-branding was identified as the main brand leverage strategy – although there were various ancillary events supporting the World Cup. Ultimately the leverage opportunities lay in South Africa co-building the strong 2010 FIFA World Cup brand. In that, South Africa was one of the two dimensions of the mega-event branding which involved event and destination brands. The impact of social and political areas was identified as the most relevant to consider when staging a sport mega-event. In consequence they should be considered by destination brand managers and sport mega-event governing bodies when planning for leverage. Further analysis revealed that national identity and international prestige were found to have been considered as the most valuable areas of mega-event brand leverage in 2010. Close associations between national identity and prestige suggested that achieving one would have an influence on the other. Respondents thought that the aspects related to national identity should be included in marketing communications associated with the mega-event, such as advertising, public relations, sponsorship and licensing. Meanwhile, strengthening of a country’s international prestige should be anticipated when establishing the public relations strategy. In addition, sponsorship and relationship marketing were viewed as potentially having a significant influence on the development of local SMEs while licensing was seen as a solution with the power to boost SMEs growth in the short-term. This suggested that sponsors and other stakeholders should be involved in planning for positive event outcomes from a point of view of a local SME. This research had four main limitations which could not make the findings relevant to the broader population. Those limitations were: the low response rate, specific characteristics of hosting nation South Africa, as well as the fact that the World Cup is the most popular sporting event in the world. In addition, the sample population was limited to South African SMEs located in the Gauteng and Western Cape provinces which had an email and were registered on the four chosen online databases. That decision was driven by the fact that these two provinces are the two major business hubs in the country and were also involved the most in hosting of the World Cup matches in 2010. SMEs’ online presence enabled the researcher to conducts the study in an efficient and cost-effective way. More research is required in the future which would test the framework in different settings, with a different sample and also within an alternative time focus, mainly pre-and post-event.

Olympic and World Cup are two big sport event. The institution which provides the platform are IOC and FIFA. They take lots of advantage,. But the hosting country, the country which provide stadiums, has few benefits. This research uses previous Olympic and World Cup example, and divide it into three parts to discuss how hosting country can win success, and also preserve the experience. This research divides the sport event into three periods: 1 The bidding analysis-before the game 2 The business model analysis-in the game period 3 The sustainability analysis-after the game In the end of research, I will use the difference between Olympic and World Cup to analyze. Why we use business model canvas to analyze? After the evaluation, we find these two games have the business model. If these two games do not have business model, it will be less valuable and profitable. Hope through this analysis, it can improve the benefit of hosting country. And if any other country wants to host other international sport event, this research can give advice.

To host the international sport events has been an important milestone for advanced countries, and the transportation service plays a significant role in the event. Taipei City is the host city of the 2017 Summer Universiade which is the largest scale and the highest level of sport event in Taiwan. The background information for this study is based on 2017 Summer Universiade. The issues that to be discussed in this thesis are to investigate the key elements of transportation service in mega-sport events, and to understand the difference of transportation service elements that passengers with different attributes concerned with; hence, to discover the service elements that efficiently increase satisfaction. Therefore, the service elements and passenger groups that required improvement can be identified. There are relatively few studies on transportation service in the past sport events; therefore, this issue is studied in this thesis. The questionnaire used in this thesis is based on the five dimensions of PZB model, and is integrated with actual services (demand for transportation, location for transportation, service impression, travel experience, customer complaint management) happening in reality. On the basis of Attractive Quality, One Dimensional Quality, Indifference Quality, and Reverse Quality, this thesis applies Kano Model to evaluate the passengers’ satisfaction of each service element. Also, this thesis investigates the relationship between attributes of passengers and satisfaction by using regression analysis. Additionally, this thesis finds out the key service elements of different passenger groups based on different operating suppliers (discussed by unity, bus, and car individually). Thus, the service elements can be prioritized according to the improvement necessity. The results of this research could be a reference for the transportation service for the future mega-sport events. The findings of this research are as follows: 1.“Sufficient destination” is regarded as a fundamental element of transportation service in the mega-sport event. The English communication skill for drivers is neither demanding nor anticipated; however, drivers would be acknowledged to stay friendly by passengers. 2.The bus passengers place more value upon “clear transportation information”, “sufficient transportation frequency”, and other internet related functions such as “free Wi-Fi in the bus”, “free APP for transportation reservation”, and “navigation APP for destination” than the car passengers do. 3.“Complaint management”, ”easy transportation reservation”, “vehicle tidiness”, “sufficient transportation frequency”, and “clear transportation information” are considered as the substantial services by passengers. Therefore, it is more effective to improve the services above. 4.For drivers and staff, decent driver behavior (drive steadily), passionate attitude (assist actively), and pleasant complaint handling (respond properly) should be the key parts in the employee training for the transportation service. 5.Even though the organizer does not provide special courtesy for female passengers, customer satisfaction from female passengers is apparently higher than male passengers. On the other hand, the preferable appraisals are remarkably offered by “VIP identity”, “scheduled shuttle service”, “car-passengers”, and “passengers with more rides for transportation service”.

Urban entrepreneurialism can be regarded as a main strategy of local governances to seek for further development under the context of the post-industrial era. The phenomenon of urban entrepreneurialism has been widely researched; however, how and under what circumstances and processes do urban governances utilize a mega sport event as their entrepreneurial strategy has still received limited academic attention. With the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung as a case study, I argue that urban entrepreneurialism is operated by a complicated mechanism involving three different but interrelated dimensions- (1) the discourse process, (2) the spatial process, as well as (3) the political process. First, concepts of "healthy" and "ecology" with the “sports fashion” had been promoted as a new way of life in order to create an alternative version of urban livability and sustainability. Second, spatially, construction of certain leisure, entertainment and sports facilities was prioritized as a capital accumulation and city marketing solution. Third, politically, the local government of Kaohsiung took this advantage to mobilize more resources not only from the central government in Taipei but also local business and civil sociality communities.

Full textIn 2018 will be the World Cup in Russia. Undoubtedly, the organization of this event is accompanied by not only a high level of cost, but also by ability to attract investment in the host cities of the World Cup matches. Creation of conditions for effective use of heritage of the World Cup becomes a problem of a city administration and the government of the region. Investment appeal of the city after holding the World Cup can become an efficiency evaluation of this heritage. This work is also devoted to attempt to determine investment appeal of a sports Mega-event.

The role of IT service in the Olympic Games is critical. The IOC leverages TOP sponsorship program to obtain IT service from Atos. The objectives of this study are trifold: to understand the IOC TOP program and its underlying theoretic framework, and to investigate that what are the major IT systems and operation mechanism utilized for supporting the Olympics as well as to comprehend the demands applied in the major IT systems and operation mechanism. Four Summer Olympic Games from 2000 to 2012 are studied in the qualitative research. The case study and document analysis methods are adopted to investigate the research questions. The sport sponsorship, knowledge management and IT dependability related academic literatures are studied to understand the theoretic framework. The case study is conducted via analyzing business materials, such as online news, technical documents, factsheet and web articles archived in the business site: IOC, Atos, OCOG, SBJ, etc. The case study results show that the success of Olympic Games is heavily replied on the dependable IT Systems for harnessing the complexity issues and mitigating risks with the help of the IOC OGKM. The social exchange theory can be applied to understand the long-term TOP sponsorship of Atos and the IOC. The OGKM and dependability guidelines can help to reduce risk and ensure quality in IT systems. The IT systems of the Olympics comprise GMS, IDS, CIS, myInfo+, T&S and OVR to support the demands of media and broadcasting as well as the uniqueness of sport event guided by the ORIS and ODF. The IT operation mechanism is carried out by the TOC under the dependability guidelines. Based on the research results of this thesis, eight points regarding IT service learned from the Olympics in the perspective of people, process and technology are provided as the recommendations to the future OC of mega sport event in Taiwan (ex: TOC of Taipei 2017 Summer Universiade) for reference.

Full textSince the year 2000, there has been an increasing number of developing countries hosting mega-events. By welcoming such events, developing countries have been improving their urban landscape and providing opportunities for foreign investments. That being said, their lack of infrastructure and equipment has shown to be a challenge in the organization of mega-events, events that must abide by strict regulatory frameworks set by international organizations, like FIFA. We believe the planning process, where local and international normative frameworks are negotiated, has an impact on the reconversion of mega-event developments. Through the analysis of Cape Town’s Green Point Urban Park (GPUP), this study aims to evaluate the planning process’ impact on the reconversion phase. To do so, we’ve divided our study in three parts. The first describes the planning process, the second exposes our evaluation of the site’s reconversion potential and the third evaluates the relationship between the GPUP reconversion potential and its planning process. Overall, this study seeks to demonstrate the dominating role played by the international normative framework during the GPUP’s planning process phase and how this has ultimately hindered the site’s potential of reconversion after the 2010 World Cup.
