Campus intramural sports officials often participate in external officiating experiences beyond campus intramural contests, such as community sport programs, middle and high school sports, and even intercollegiate sports. While these external opportunities may enhance an official's skills and abilities, there are concerns that the demand from external agencies and competing salaries result in campus intramural programs being left with underdeveloped officials. This in turn contributes to the critique that encouraging external officiating experiences does not contribute to the college or univer

This paper investigates the efficacy of an AI-powered Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in enhancing officiating accuracy, efficiency, and consistency in team sports. Employing a combination of artificial intelligence and computer vision, the system was tested in a local championship in Almaty, involving eight football teams. Through the analysis of decision-making accuracy, time efficiency, and consistency across officiating scenarios, the study employed chi-squared tests, paired t-tests, and Cohen's Kappa statistics to quantitatively assess improvements over traditional VAR systems. Youth sports is facing a crisis that threatens the ecosystem of youth sports. Innovation—the ability to generate and execute new ideas—is needed to stem the negative tide of a declining and aging officiating pool and improve the recruitment and retention of sports officials. Without creative problem solving and innovation by many different stakeholders in youth sports, the benefits that children receive from participating in sports are threatened by the lack of qualified officials to referee competitive games and matches. This case pushes students well past the news headlines of angry parents

It has been repeatedly proven that the speech of sports commentators is capable of manipulating the audience. However, there is a need for a study of how sports commentators cover officiating as part of sports discourse. The objective of this study is to determine the ways to present the work of sports officials in sports commentary. The materials for this study are comprised of transcripts from broadcasts of 5 football matches of the Russian Premier League 2023/24 season which, according to the expert officiating committee, involved refereeing errors. Rugby refereeing requires its practitioners to possess certain qualities. MacIntyre (1981) emphasises the importance of moral goods defined with respect to a community of virtuous persons engaged in a social practice. Whereas a virtue ethics account of playing and coaching has evolved (Brown, 1990; McNamee, 1995), little philosophical work exists on the role and status of elite match officials. The significance attached to the outcome of elite sport contests provide principled and instrumental reasons as to why this particular sporting aspect requires attention. This thesis aimed to develop a deeper understanding of elite-level cricket umpires’ leg-before-wicket (LBW) decisions. The thesis analysed decisions from real professional cricket matches to determine whether umpires’ decisions were biased by contextual factors such as match format, expectations, or home team advantage. This thesis also investigated the explicit decision-making expertise and beliefs of cricket umpires through interviews with elite-level officials to develop a conceptual model of LBW decisions.

In this study I examine foul calls by NBA referees alongside the difference in aggressiveness of twelve NBA basketball teams as they compete for the Championship Title. I aim to identify referee biases that increase the likelihood of the NBA Finals ending in a later game due to league revenue incentives. My data consists of 91 individual NBA Finals games played between the 2001 and 2016 NBA Finals. After controlling for changes in play as well as the difference in aggressiveness, I find that NBA referee’s foul calls are more dependent on a call on the opposing team in situations with a larger

Abstract:
Many scoring systems can be seen as statistical tests of hypotheses. In tennis singles, for example, the scoring system used can be seen as a test involving 2 binomial probabilities pa and pb, where pa (pb) is the probability player A (player B) wins a point initiated by player A (player B). Tennis singles is thus a “bipoints” game. The tennis scoring system is an inefficient test relative to the sequential probability ratio test (SPRT) based on pairs of these points. When pa + Pb > 1 (the tennis context), an SPRT based on the “play-the-loser” (PL) rule is superefficient. Chapter 2 show
