Abstract:
Compared to men, the sports participation of women is lower, especially in the East. Not many studies have compared the impacts of locus of control, agents of socialization, and sport socialization situations on the sports participation of women. Hence, the purpose of this study is to explore the contributing factors which may promote the sports participation of women in Taiwan. To do this, 450 structured questionnaires were distributed to women in Chiayi, Taiwan, with an 89.3% return rate. The study found that internal locus of control, agents of socialization, and sport socialization situation had positive impacts on the sports participation of women. In line with these results, the study suggests the strengthening of the internal locus of control of women, making the best use of socialization agents, and improvement of sport socialization situations, in order to promote sports participation in women.

Abstract:
The current emphasis on women's health and gender egalitarianism in Taiwan means that urban women are joining sport and health clubs in pursuit of self-development. The aim in this study was to develop and analyze the motivations, constraints, and methods of lifestyle adjustment in regard to urban women's use of sport and health clubs in Taiwan. Participants were 373 women from 5 cities in Taiwan and tests were conducted using structural equation modeling. The results indicated that the motivations, constraints, and lifestyle adjustments with regard to leisure sports positively affected women's participation in sports clubs. Specifically, although participation constrains acted as crucial antecedent variables influencing motivations to participate, they did not have any influence on lifestyle adjustments. Based on the results of this study, suggestions are made about management and policies of sport and health clubs.

Abstract:
This research attempts to investigate the determinants of a sports team sponsor's brand equity and whether the proposed structural relationships vary across countries. Field data are collected from sports team fans in two Asian economies/countries, i.e. Taiwan and Indonesia. According to the findings, in general, team identification and perceived congruence between the sponsor and the sponsored sports team affect the sponsor's credibility, which in turn has an impact on the sponsor's brand equity. ‘Country’ moderates the above structural relationships. However, the effects of team identification and perceived congruence on the sponsor's credibility do not receive supportive evidence in Taiwan and Indonesia respectively.

Abstract:
Objective - This study aims to construct a model for the willingness to develop sports tourism, using the factors of place attachment, the impact of sports tourism, attitude and willingness to develop sports tourism. Methodology/Technique - The study gathers data via questionnaires. Following this, purposive sampling is used to distribute the questionnaires and the collected data is analysed using descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis and a structural equation model. Findings - Once the aforementioned analysis is conducted, the following conclusions were drawn. First, the model construction fits well. Second, the factor of place attachment has a significant positive influence on the perceived impact of sports tourism. Both the positive perception of sports tourism and the attitude for developing sports tourism have a positive impact on willingness to develop sports tourism. Contrary to this, negative perceptions of sports tourism have a negative impact on the attitude to develop sports tourism, although it has no significant impact on the willingness to develop sports tourism. Novelty - This study demonstrates that the higher the degree of place attachment associated with the inhabitants of Taiwan, the greater recognition there is of the impact of sports tourism. The most important finding of this study is that this positive impact enhances the attitude and willingness of inhabitants to develop sports tourism. The study also develops some practical strategies based on the study results. Type of Paper: Empirical Keywords: Place Attachment; Willingness; Sports Tourism; Tourism Impact. Abstract:
In Taiwan, female athletes receive little media attention or are objectified when they win international competitions. However, this objectification does not merely demonstrate sexism toward female athletes, but it also indicates current social views toward national identity and nationalism in Taiwan. This study examined the representation of female athletes from the perspectives of historical background, the narrative structure of documentaries, gendered discourse and gendered nationalism. A textual analysis approach was adopted and documentary theory was employed as a theoretical framework. Four sports documentaries regarding female athletes produced from 2002 to 2009 were analysed. The results showed that in addition to the female athletes telling their stories, the voices of male others were also included to portray the female athletes’ experiences. Moreover, the female athletes were depicted as physically masculine but emotionally feminine, and represented as sports heroines and daughters of Taiwan. As presented by the narration strategy, the female body embodies the gendered nationalism and gendered discourse pervading Taiwanese sports culture.

Abstract:
Promoting Buddhism through Modern Sports: The Case Study of Fo Guang Shan in TaiwanIn the past, traditional Buddhism in China focused on chanting and meditation that detached itself from the society. However, after generations of strenuous efforts to promote ‘Humanistic Buddhism’, several Masters have been encouraging religion to engage more in daily lives. One of the proponents was Master Hsin Yun, who was born and raised in mainland China and subsequently moved to Taiwan along with the ‘Monk Rescue Team’. It was in Taiwan that Master Hsin Yun founded Fo Guang Shan, one of the most sacred Buddhist sites on the island. At the beginning, he started the place from scratch, setting up basketball courts for the followers to take part in basketball games. Upholding the notion that Buddhism needs to engage the public, Master, therefore, has a unique way of combing religion with modern sports in an attempt to let more people get in touch with religion. Accordingly, basketball, soccer, gymnastics, and other sports were promoted and sponsored under the auspices of Fo Guang Shan, which certainly topples public stereotypes around sedentary Buddhism. In the end, Master hopes that, in the future, sports can unite healthy Fo Guang followers worldwide and bring honor to Taiwan.

Taiwan is a historically disputed territory, colonized by different regimes since the 17th century. After the Second World War in 1945, Taiwan was dominated by the KMT (Kuomintang, the Chinese Nationalist Party). In the history of Taiwan's sport, Taiwanese athletes have been excluded from international sport because of political issue between two Chinas. The origins of the development of women’s sports in Taiwan can also be seen as the product of political factors, which replace the absence of male athletes in the international field in the1960s and 1970s. This research will enter the history of women’s elite sport from the first appearance of sportswomen on the world stage, which is also the period that the republican China in Taiwan loses gradually its allies and its seat in the international field. We want to discover the development of sport for women in Taiwan, and try to reveal what role they have played, how political events have influenced the development of sport and women's sport in particular, how women’s sport have influenced politics and Taiwanese society, and how these sports women are described and represented in the press

Abstract:
This thesis comprises three studies that empirically evaluate the perceptions of sports managers and academics of the importance of competencies for sports managers in Taiwan. First, a systematic review technique is conducted to review the literature on competency-based studies in sports management and this is followed by three empirical studies. Study I is designed to develop an appropriate research instrument for the evaluation of the perceptions of the importance of competencies to the successful conducting of a sports manager's job in Taiwan. Study II analyzes the underlying features in these competencies and provides a comparison of the perceptions of the two populations. Study III identifies and evaluates the process of curriculum construction in three leading academic institutions and its relationship to competency-based education. The thesis concludes that although there are many globaUshared phenomena in the development of sports management, the perceptions of important competencies of sports managers may vary in different local contexts and thus locally based analysis is necessary to identify culturally specific features.

Abstract:
This study looks at the functions of watching sports for an expatriate living in Taipei, Taiwan - specifically rugby fans because during the time of study Super Rugby was taking place. With the emergence of online streaming, watching live sports games that take place in other parts of the world, is made possible and more convenient. Previous studies came up with different theories as to why people watched sports and this pa- per researched whether those theories applies to the expatriate community or if there is a unique difference. In order to find data, field observations were done at both pub- lic and private settings. There are two sports pubs in Taipei, The Brass Monkey and On Tap, that have a large expat audience and therefore, were chosen for public field observations. The private field observations were made at the home of a rugby fan who watched games on a weekly basis with three other participants. This study looked at what social behaviors (such as high-fiving each other) and interactions took place while watching sports in the bars and private home. Prior to the field observa- tions were interviews done on the group of sports fans to direct what to look for in field observations. The paper classifies motivations for watching sports as an expat, using Gantz’s 1981 study with additional motivations that was more appropriate for recent studies. Results found that while there were similarities with previous theories on how watching sports with others enhance some behaviors, the notion of patriotism was not exemplified as other studies may imply. Discussions focuses on how sport watching is not just about the act of supporting specific teams, but instead building a social community. Lastly, after completing the field observations and interviews, sug- gestions for future studies is discussed.

碩士
銘傳大學
應用中國文學系碩士班
98
When the Tai-Chung Golden Dragon team winning the Little League World Series championship in 1969, is not only beginning Taiwan baseball golden age, but also open a door for Taiwan sports prose. Participation in sports brings on many physical and psychological benefits, although sport is often the subject of technical inquiry, it is equally important to understand the relationship of sport and society. Considering sport as a significant social phenomenon, it becomes possible to conceive of a philosophy, sociology and literature of sport. In this thesis, the sports prose encompass athletes and non-athletes writer, they talk about sports and games in general at first, then focus on the details of a particular sport or the chosen. Describe the most popular kinds of sports, the peculiarities of each of the sport and its rules and regulations, name some famous sportsmen or sportswomen, and assess their role in modern society. Nowadays most of the Taiwanese are keen to watch sports matches and are more eager to get to know about sports news. Therefore a prose of sports becomes a useful medium to promote sorts and its benefits as well as create awareness of various sports. Developing the sports prose involves getting comments, ideas and views from sources such as players, commentators, referees, as well as the sponsors. Therefore a good sports essayist would have the resources and connections to approach and conduct primary research from the right persons in order to provide information which are current and accurate to the situation. This thesis will be useful to those interested in Taiwanese literature, sports literature, and other subjects.

Abstract:
碩士
國立體育大學
體育推廣學系碩士班
97
The purpose of this study was to explore the development of the Taiwan community sports in terms of the policies, the organizations, their participants, the funds, and the athletic ground and facilities during the time from A.D. 1973 to A.D. 2008. Documentary analysis was applied in this research in order to outline the model of Taiwan community sports. The conclusion were as below: A. The community sports in Taiwan, with its basic execution unit being the local communities, mainly affiliated to the policies of sports for all. It is crucial for the policies to include proper location and facilities at the initial stage of the development; however most of the policies tend to be short-term programs and not being consecutive. B. The structure of the PE organizations has formed a model of “ central to local ” and “ government to society ”, while those organizations established by social group or non-governmental institution are few in the amounts and not in proper operation. C. PE division in Taiwan has emphasized the cultivation of human resources for community sports, of which the range of the human resources are broad, including PE teachers, students of sports department of universities and colleges, the coaches or the fitness instructors as well as the volunteers for fitness instructions. D. Funding is the core point to decide whether the policies or the plans can work out efficiently; however, government remains the source of the funding and enables a regular finance providing each year. E. The increasing amounts of athletic grounds and facilities each year has brought out a fact that in order to activate the community sports in Taiwan, well-equipped grounds and facilities are necessarily required. Although the private athletic grounds increased, they were still deeply influenced by the public or state-run sport centers. Whether or not the athletic grounds are in sufficient amounts will fundamentally influence the tensity of participation for people in the society.

The research results show that Chinese Taipei e-Sports Association and companies have developed three kinds of systems, including namely, e-sports Class, e-sports feature enrollment and e-sports eugenics system to solve the lack of education resources. through the industry-university cooperation, the e-sports will be brought into the school. Through the cooperation, e-sports systems will be brought to schools properly. Moreover, these three different systems help students to make prosperous future plans. Although there are e-sports students in the sport class, they don’t consider e-sports the only choice for their high school career. Instead, they learn knowledge and skills from e-sports. On the other hand, their future career plans would not be restricted and they can plan their future, through other relevant ways.

Abstract:
RFID ticketing systems constitute a particular type of pervasive information systems providing spectators of sports events with a transparent mechanism to validate and renew tickets. This study seeks to investigate the factors that influence user acceptance of RFID ticketing systems. The theoretical background of the study was drawn from the technology acceptance model (TAM) and the innovation diffusion theory (IDT), and enhanced with factors related to privacy and switching cost features. The research model was tested with data gathered through a lab experiment (N=71). The participants perceived the system as useful and easy to use, and expressed the willingness to adopt it should it become commercially available. Moreover, the results of ANOVA tests suggest that the age and education of users influence their perception towards the usefulness of the system and its subsequent use.

Abstract:
In Taiwan, international sport during the 1950s–1970s centered on the war with the People’s Republic of China’s “Communist bandits” to represent China and achieve recognition from worldwide sporting bodies. Sport was meant to buttress the Republic of China’s legitimacy, to demonstrate the centrality of Chinese culture on this small island “province,” and to establish Taiwan’s teams and athletes as representative of a “Free China” regime and populace that could inspire a recovery of the mainland. The Nationalists and Communists both used sport to establish their own regime as the rightful modern revolutionary government of China and to end long-standing assumptions of Chinese weakness and degeneracy.
