Abstract:
F. Springer, pseudonym of Dutch ex-diplomat Corel Jan Schneider, fills a unique position in the present-day Dutch literary scene in that the action of his prose works is usually not situated in the Netherlands but mostly in exotic places where Schneider was posted to as an employee of the Dutch foreign service. Having Java as his place of birth and Dutch New Guinea as his first place of assignment, quite a few of his earlier stories and short novels focus on the fateful encounter between Western administrative efficiency or approach to colonial life and Eastern (mainly primitive) ways of living. As a sceptic, Springer views the while man's colonial administration as futile scribbling in the margins of history'. Springer's main works are the novels Bougainville, noted for its unique structure, and Quissama, a gripping evocation of postcolonial Angola. In these and other of his texts Springer regards writing as a way of making his existence more bearable and keeping misery, encountered in all third world countries, at a distance in order not to be engulfed by it. He also views it as his expression of opposition against the world of make believe and the deception of modern diplomacy and international trade relations.

Abstract:
AbstractSpringer varieties are studied because their cohomology carries a natural action of the symmetric group Sn and their top-dimensional cohomology is irreducible. In his work on tangle invariants, Khovanov constructed a family of Springer varieties Xn as subvarieties of the product of spheres (S2)n. We show that if Xn is embedded antipodally in (S2)n then the natural Sn-action on (S2)n induces an Sn-representation on the image of H∗(Xn). This representation is the Springer representation. Our construction admits an elementary (and geometrically natural) combinatorial description, which we use to prove that the Springer representation on H∗(Xn) is irreducible in each degree. We explicitly identify the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis for the irreducible representation of Sn corresponding to the partition (n/2, n/2).

This thesis studies the alternating sum of cohomology groups of a Springer fiber (in characteristic 0), called a total Springer representation, as a representation of both the Weyl group and the stabilizer of the corresponding nilpotent element. For classical types, we present explicit formulas for the decomposition of total Springer representations into irreducible ones of the corresponding Weyl group using Kostka-Foulkes polynomials. Also, the character value at any element contained in the maximal parabolic subgroup(s) of type A is explicitly given in terms of Green polynomials. As a result, closed formulas for the Euler characteristic of Springer fibers are deduced. Our proof relies on analysis of geometry of Springer fibers and combinatorics of symmetric functions. Moreover, we provide formulas for the character value of a total Springer representation at any element in the stabilizer of the corresponding nilpotent element. For exceptional types, the character values of total Springer representations are completely known. Here, we only describe the decomposition of such representations into irreducible ones of stabilizers of corresponding nilpotent elements.

Abstract:
In 1976, Springer defined a correspondence making a link between the irreducible ordinary (characteristic zero) representations of a Weyl group and the geometry of the associated nilpotent variety. In this thesis, we define a modular Springer correspondence (in positive characteristic), and we show that the decomposition numbers of a Weyl group (for example the symmetric group) are particular cases of decomposition numbers for equivariant perverse sheaves on the nilpotent variety. We calculate explicitly the decomposition numbers associated to the regular and subregular classes, and to the minimal and trivial classes. We determine the correspondence explicitly in the case of the symmetric group, and show that James's row and column removal rule is a consequence of a smooth equivalence of nilpotent singularities obtained by Kraft and Procesi. The first chapter contains generalities about perverse sheaves with Z_l and F_l coefficients.

Let G be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p, g the Lie algebra of G and g* the dual vector space of g. This thesis is concerned with nilpotent orbits in g and g* and the Springer correspondence for g and g* when p is a bad prime. Denote W the set of isomorphism classes of irreducible representations of the Weyl group W of G. Fix a prime number 1 7 p. We denote ... the set of all pairs (c, F), where c is a nilpotent G-orbit in g (resp. g*) and F is an irreducible G-equivariant Q1-local system on c (up to isomorphism). In chapter 1, we study the Springer correspondence for g when G is of type B, C or D (p = 2). The correspondence is a bijective map from W to 2t.. In particular, we classify nilpotent G-orbits in g (type B, D) over finite fields of characteristic 2. In chapter 2, we study the Springer correspondence for g* when G is of type B, C or D (p = 2). The correspondence is a bijective map from ... . In particular, we classify nilpotent G-orbits in g* over algebraically closed and finite fields of characteristic 2. In ASME Turbo Expo 2019: Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2019-92033.

Abstract:
Abstract Here, a new model for predicting the water droplet erosion (WDE) from online water washing in compressors is developed and its results are discussed in comparisons with a baseline model. The model development started with the analysis of existing WDE models as well as pertinent experimental campaigns aiming at extracting a comprehensive erosion model able to account for the influence of droplet velocity and diameter, impact angle, surface roughness and hardness on the erosion phenomena. The new approach is applied to the study of WDE for droplets of 100 μm diameter in a gas turbine compressor and the predictions are compared with those of the Springer model. Even if the two models (Springer’s and ours) return qualitatively similar results, the erosion prediction is strongly different as in Springer model the erosion rate is four time higher than in the present model. This difference is attributed to the oversimplification of Springer model that does not account for any of the parameters that are relevant for the water erosion such as surface hardness and roughness as well as for a different treatment of the incubation period. Furthermore, to analyze the effect of all the main quantities affecting WDE process, several simulations were performed. Droplets diameter is found to be the key parameter, in determining the erosion rate. Reducing the diameter one can reduce erosion from online water washing. Surface hardness is also very important, while surface roughness can be relevant depending on the time frame one is interested at.

Full text
Abstract:
The most important function of grid springs in a spacer grid is to position the fuel rods appropriately using a friction force and to prohibit the fuel rods from dropping during a normal reactor operation. While the fuel burn-up increases, spring force of grid springs decreases because the spring stiffness of grid springs is degraded by a high temperature and an irradiation effect in a reactor core. Therefore this phenomenon has to be reflected when the initial spring force of a grid spring is being designed. Usually, characterization tests of grid springs are conducted to verify designed grid springs have suitable spring forces. (Kim, 2007) FE model using a contact definition and rigid beam elements for a welding bead for predicting the spring stiffness without any spring test was established and verified in a previous research. In those days, two assumptions were used and the analysis for an unloading process was not included in spite of its importance for a spring design. In this paper, the fact that the assumptions have no effect on the analysis results is proven and a realistically improved FE analysis method using coupling constraints for a welding bead is suggested for investigating the spring’s characteristics under an in-grid boundary condition.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: As a common type of clinical dementia, the prevalence rate of vascular dementia(VaD) increased rapidly in recent years, damaging both patients’ health and social-economic prospect. There is currently no effective treatment for VaD, though western medicines can slightly improve patients' cognitive function, but not brought a significant improvement in daily life ability. Chinese herbal medicine(CHM) has been widely employed to treat dementia for more than 2000 years in China. Despite the proliferation of relevant literature, there is still a lack of evidence to prove the effectiveness and safety of such therapy. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis protocol is aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of CHM forVaD. Information sources: 6 English databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Springer, CENTRAL and WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform) and 4 Chinese databases (Wan fang Database, Chinese Scientific Journals Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database).

Abstract:
Understanding Acoustics: An Experimentalist’s View of Sound and Vibration Autor: Steven L. Garret | Springer, 2020 Spatial Hearing: The Psychophysics of Human Sound Localization Autor: Jens Blauert | MIT Press, 1996 (Rev. Ed.).

Raymond, Kara, Laura Palacios, Cheryl McIntyre, and Evan Gwilliam. Status of climate and water resources at Saguaro National Park: Water year 2019. Edited by Alice Wondrak Biel. National Park Service, December 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2288717.

Abstract:
Climate and hydrology are major drivers of ecosystems. They dramatically shape ecosystem structure and function, particularly in arid and semi-arid ecosystems. Understanding changes in climate, groundwater, and water quality and quantity is central to assessing the condition of park biota and key cultural resources. The Sonoran Desert Network collects data on climate, groundwater, and surface water at 11 National Park Service units in south-ern Arizona and New Mexico. This report provides an integrated look at climate, groundwater, and springs conditions at Saguaro National Park (NP) during water year 2019 (October 2018–September 2019). Annual rainfall in the Rincon Mountain District was 27.36" (69.49 cm) at the Mica Mountain RAWS station and 12.89" (32.74 cm) at the Desert Research Learning Center Davis station. February was the wettest month, accounting for nearly one-quarter of the annual rainfall at both stations. Each station recorded extreme precipitation events (>1") on three days. Mean monthly maximum and minimum air temperatures were 25.6°F (-3.6°C) and 78.1°F (25.6°C), respectively, at the Mica Mountain station, and 37.7°F (3.2°C) and 102.3°F (39.1°C), respectively, at the Desert Research Learning Center station. Overall temperatures in WY2019 were cooler than the mean for the entire record. The reconnaissance drought index for the Mica Mountain station indicated wetter conditions than average in WY2019. Both of the park’s NOAA COOP stations (one in each district) had large data gaps, partially due to the 35-day federal government shutdown in December and January. For this reason, climate conditions for the Tucson Mountain District are not reported. The mean groundwater level at well WSW-1 in WY2019 was higher than the mean for WY2018. The water level has generally been increasing since 2005, reflecting the continued aquifer recovery since the Central Avra Valley Storage and Recovery Project came online, recharging Central Arizona Project water. Water levels at the Red Hills well generally de-clined starting in fall WY2019, continuing through spring. Monsoon storms led to rapid water level increases. Peak water level occurred on September 18. The Madrona Pack Base well water level in WY2019 remained above 10 feet (3.05 m) below measuring point (bmp) in the fall and winter, followed by a steep decline starting in May and continuing until the end of September, when the water level rebounded following a three-day rain event. The high-est water level was recorded on February 15. Median water levels in the wells in the middle reach of Rincon Creek in WY2019 were higher than the medians for WY2018 (+0.18–0.68 ft/0.05–0.21 m), but still generally lower than 6.6 feet (2 m) bgs, the mean depth-to-water required to sustain juvenile cottonwood and willow trees. RC-7 was dry in June–September, and RC-4 was dry in only September. RC-5, RC-6 and Well 633106 did not go dry, and varied approximately 3–4 feet (1 m). Eleven springs were monitored in the Rincon Mountain District in WY2019. Most springs had relatively few indications of anthropogenic or natural disturbance. Anthropogenic disturbance included spring boxes or other modifications to flow. Examples of natural disturbance included game trails and scat. In addition, several sites exhibited slight disturbance from fires (e.g., burned woody debris and adjacent fire-scarred trees) and evidence of high-flow events. Crews observed 1–7 taxa of facultative/obligate wetland plants and 0–3 invasive non-native species at each spring. Across the springs, crews observed four non-native plant species: rose natal grass (Melinis repens), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis), crimson fountaingrass (Cenchrus setaceus), and red brome (Bromus rubens). Baseline data on water quality and chemistry were collected at all springs. It is likely that that all springs had surface water for at least some part of WY2019. However, temperature sensors to estimate surface water persistence failed...
