Abstract:
There is no question that business, education, and all fields of science have come to rely heavily on the computer. This dependence has become so great that it is no longer possible to understand social and health science research without substantial knowledge of statistics and without at least some rudimentary understanding of statistical software. The number and types of statistical software packages that are available continue to grow each year. In this paper we have chosen to work with SPSS, or the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. SPSS was chosen because of its popularity within both academic and business circles, making it the most widely used package of its type. SPSS is also a versatile package that allows many different types of analyses. transformations, and forms of output - in short, it will more than adequately serve our purposes. The SPSS software package is continually being updated and improved, and so with each major revision comes a new version of that package. In this paper, we will describe and use the most recent version of SPSS, called SPSS for Windows, in order to use this text for data analysis, your must have access to the SPSS for Windows software package. The capability of SPSS is truly astounding. The package enables you to obtain statistics ranging from simple descriptive numbers to complex analyses of multivariate matrices. You can plot the data in histograms, scatterplots, and other ways. You can combine files, split files, and sort files. You can modify existing variables and create new ones. In short, you can do just about anything you'd ever want with a set of data using this software package. A number of specific SPSS procedures are relevant to the kinds of statistical analyses covered in an introductory level statistics or research methods course typically found in the social and health sciences, natural sciences, or business. Yet, we will touch on just a fraction of the many things that SPSS can do. Our aim is to help то become familiar with SPSS, and we hope that this introduction will both reinforce our understanding of statistics and lead us to see what a powerful tool SPSS is, how it can actually help you better understand your data, how it can enable you to test hypotheses that were once too difficult to consider, and how it can save our incredible amounts of time as well as reduce the likelihood of making errors in data analyses. We show how to create a data file and generate an output file. We also discuss how to name and save the different types of files created in the three main SPSS windows. This paper will present a software presentation from a survey on socio-economic and environmental research.

The paper expounds on the application of Statistical Software (SS) in quantitative data analysis. Research questions were formulated and questionnaire were used for data collection. The collected data were analysed using percentage, mean and regression. From the analysis carried out, we discovered that women are fewer in the academic profession. We also find out that the most common statistical software is MsExcel, followed by Statistical Package for Social Sciences(SPSS) and the less popular statistical software is R. Also, the frequently used statistical software is SPSS, followed by MsExcel, while the less usage statistical software is R. In this paper work, it was shown that there is a positive impact of statistical software in obtaining a fast, accurate and efficient result in academic staff research work in Kogi State Polytechnic (KSP), Lokoja. The following statistical software - MsExcel, SPSS, Graphpad, Minitab and R, were highlighted and the regression analysis carried out for each statistical software were screenshot and presented. It was discovered that the five (5) different SS used gave the same result. The simple regression model obtained is Number of Death = 44+ 2.17Malaria. Recommendations were made accordingly.

Abstract:
This study outlines the strategies that were employed during the training of Grade 11 Physical Sciences teachers in the use and development of an Electronic Performance Support System (EPSS). The EPSS process involves extended individualised support for teachers through face-to-face training. A purposive sample was utilised and 22 Grade 11 Physical Sciences teachers participated in the study. Teachers’ skills and knowledge before and after the EPSS training process were measured on three measures of satisfaction (course material, the EPSS training process and the trainer’s competencies) and three measures regarding the EPSS (using an EPSS, creating a flowchart and designing an EPSS). A customer satisfaction index questionnaire and retrospective opinionnaire were used to collect data from the participants. Microsoft Excel was used to analyse data collected using the customer satisfaction index questionnaire. Furthermore a Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program was used to analyse data collected using a retrospective opinionnaire. Significant effects were found on all six measures when comparing the skills of teachers before and after attending the EPSS training programme. The results reveal that teachers who participated in the research are satisfied with the use, design and development of an EPSS in education.

Mudzanani, Lufuno Robert. "Public participation as a tool to Enhance Service Delivery in Local Government : A case study of Capricorn District Municipality in the Limpopo Province." Thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11602/680.

Full text
Abstract:
PhD (Public Adminiistration)
Department of Public and Development Administration
This study examines the notion of public participation as a tool to enhance service delivery in the Capricorn District Municipality. Public participation is a milestone of democracy and local governance. Local government – which is closest to the people – provides an ideal forum for the flourishing of participatory democracy. The centrality of public participation in the development of policies and programmes or action plans has been widely recognised by both government and the private sector. However, involving the public in the development of any policy, programme or action plan is a daunting task. Indeed, if not well-managed, public involvement often leads to protests, litigation, criticisms, and delays in service delivery to the people. Thus, the extent to which public participation can be a tool for the enhancement of service delivery in Limpopo – especially in the Capricorn District Municipality – is the focus of this study. This study is guided by the following questions: What are the key concepts that relate to public participation as a tool to enhance service delivery? What impact does the Constitution of South Africa, Act 08 of 1996, and other government legal frameworks have on public participation as a tool to enhance service delivery in South Africa, particularly in the Capricorn District Municipality? What modes and models of public participation are used to enhance service delivery in the Capricorn District Municipality? What are the main factors that influence public participation as a tool to enhance service delivery in the Capricorn District Municipality? The study adopts both qualitative and quantitative research approaches whereby the use of primary and secondary sources was augmented by interviews with local government actors. Moreover, questionnaires were administered by the researcher and his assistant researchers. A purposive sampling method was used. The researcher ensured that all relevant elements of 5 research ethics were observed. The data generated by the questionnaires and interviews were analysed and interpreted using the latest statistical tools. Both qualitative and quantitative analysis methods were used. Data collected using questionnaires were analysed by means of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The information was presented in the form of tabulations, frequencies, and percentages. Data collected through interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings of this study reflect that public participation mainly serves the purpose of meeting the statutory requirements for the development of best value initiatives and gaining information from citizens. The majority of the respondents were of the view that the Ward Committee system is fully functional in their municipalities. All Capricorn District municipalities have officers responsible for public participation; however, not all of them are accessible to the public. It was revealed that the public participation budget in Lepelle-Nkumpi and Mollemole is insufficient. The other main constrains identified are the serious lack of personal and working tools and resources. The study also found that not all documents were translated into the languages spoken in the Capricorn District and that there is a lack of feedback mechanisms on the issues raised by members of public during the IDP and Budget Fora. These findings were discussed in relation to the study’s objectives and research questions.

Abstract:
Abstract Wealth creation and poverty alleviation processes in the forest-bounded areas entail the use of such forests to a greater extent. Studies elsewhere show that there is often a tendency to use such forests until they are depleted before technology comes in to improve livelihoods. In this chapter, we examine community livelihoods in relation to ecosystem integrity for communities surrounding the Makere Forest Reserve, particularly socio-economic characteristics of communities, their links to forest utilization and implications for ecosystem integrity. We used mixed methods to collect data: (i) a household questionnaire; (ii) focus group discussions; (iii) key informant interviews; and (iv) a literature review, backed up with satellite imagery. Quantitative and qualitative data collected were subjected to statistical and non-statistical tests, respectively, with the use of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) computer software for quantitative data analysis. Livelihood activities in the area include shifting cultivation, livestock keeping, firewood fetching, charcoal making, harvesting timber and illegal logging. The motive for such forest exploitation is both for meeting household needs as well as for wealth accumulation. Forest users take part in such activities regardless of the distance they have to travel from their villages to come to the forest areas. We found education is an integral part of wealth status, but had nothing to do in terms of improving livelihood activities for ecosystem integrity. The absence of livelihood diversification of farm-related activities penetrates into weak forest governance strategies resulting in proliferation of deforestation and forest degradation. To maintain forest integrity, integrated approaches in forest management and alternative livelihood activities are needed such as beekeeping, fishing and modernized livestock keeping. These activities have the potential to increase household food and income and alleviate poverty levels without compromising ecosystem integrity.

Abstract:
This chapter builds on social identity and conservation of resources theories to understand how perceived overall justice (POJ) reduces turnover intention among female self-initiated expatriates under the effect of cross-cultural resilience (CCR). A sample of 123 women expatriates from Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries, working in Saudi Arabia, participated in an online survey. Results were analyzed using a statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) tool to test the hypothesis regarding proposed associations. Findings show that a POJ climate reduces intention to stay among female expatriates. Furthermore, this relationship is fully mediated by CCR. This chapter offers evidence that fair policies must be cultivated and developed to retain highly skilled expatriates during turbulent times. A fair climate offers more protection for expatriates, enhances resiliency levels, and encourages them to stay in the host organizations.

Abstract:
This study examines the adoption of service robots by fast-food restaurant employees. Adopting the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), this study proposes four determinants of intention to use: performance expectancy (PE), effort expectancy (EE), social influence (SI) and facilitating conditions (FC). The role of culture was also considered to examine its role in moderating the influencing factors. The data was collected from Malaysian fast-food restaurant employees and analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and the Smart-PLS software. The findings showed that intention to use service robots is primarily influenced by performance expectancy and social influence. Additionally, culture also has a significant effect as moderating factor on the relationship between social influence and intention to use service robots in a fast-food restaurant setting. Lastly, a discussion on the contributions and implications are presented.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of the present research is to assess the perceptions of authenticity and crowding of cruise tourists visiting a port of call and its influence on their future behavioural intentions. The research was carried out in the city of Valencia, because it is one of the main Spanish cruise ports and is a representative city of the Mediterranean ports of call for the cruise business. A total of 467 valid interviews were obtained. For the analysis of data, the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS version 22.0) was used. The findings reveal that Valencia is perceived as an authentic destination with moderate levels of human and spatial crowding. The analysis also demonstrates that there is a significant relationship between the assessed perceptions and the post-visit behavioural intentions, although, in the case of crowding, the association varies depending on the nature of crowding.

Abstract:
In this study we have aimed to present statistical evaluation of changes in the surface roughness of the solid tone areas on CtP flexo printing plate in dependence of print run. Changes in flexo plate surface roughness is influenced by the plate-making process, printing pressure and speed, the interaction with the ink and printing substrate and by the wear of the printing plate due to long print-runs. Thus, the aim of this research was to evaluate the changes in the amplitude surface roughness parameters (Ra, Rp, Rv and Rz), between the printing plates used for different print runs. In the experiment, we have employed three sets of CtP flexo printing plates, for three colors-cyan, magenta and blue. The first set was not used for printing, the second was used to print 7 rolls of substrate and the third is used to print 11 rolls of printing substrate. The amplitude surface roughness parameters were compared by applying independentsamples t-test method using the software SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) with a 0.05 significance level. Statistical analysis revealed that the difference between the amplitude surface roughness parameters measured on CtP flexo printing plates are significant with a 95% confidence level, whereas the statistical significance pointed out that with the longer print runs, the difference will be strongly expressed.

Abstract:
The arrival of Internet has turned the world into a global village where geographical location or distance has to some extent ceased to be a major obstacle to communication and movement of goods and services. This development has also brought with it cybercrime and its level of sophistication. A lot of measures and institutions are being put in place to minimize the incidence of cybercrime in different countries; also, efforts are being made to identify the contributing factors to cybercrime. This research however, adopts a factor analytic approach to formulate the indices that may contribute to the perpetration of cybercrime. A total of seventy three (73) indices were formulated and used to design a structured questionnaire which was administered on five classes of respondents, using purposive and simple random sampling techniques. The data obtained were analyzed by means of factor analysis by principal component using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Ten factors were extracted and subjected to orthogonal rotation using promax. The contributing factors identified in this study could assist stakeholders to combat the menace of cybercrime.

Abstract:
The construction industry of Trinidad and Tobago has been, for decades, a direct indicator of national development and contributor to economic growth. The associated problems of the industry as experienced by contractors negatively impacts project performance and success. This study identified the most common problems experienced by contractors and assessed these to determine their level of significance and importance to projects. Employing a survey questionnaire and analytical methods using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), 43 problems were identified, classified into seven (7) factor groups: Financial, Managerial, Environmental, Labour Based, Resource Based Owner Based and Project Based that were ranked on their level of significance and importance. The top ten (10) problems were found to be delay of payments, design, scope and material changes, working in high risk areas, lack of feasibility and brief, corruption, lack of contractor’s experience, bureaucracy, geological problems, contractor’s finances and cash flow. These problems represent the Financial, Managerial, Environmental, Project Based and Owner Based factor groups with financial factors being the highest rated group of adverse effect and significance. Highlighting the findings of this study, the preferred solution to mitigate against the adverse impact indicative of the construction problems experienced were presented. These solutions can be implemented to reduce the adverse effects on projects, promoting sustainable construction practices in the construction industry of Trinidad & Tobago.
