Abstract:
Abstract Squash is a complex sport between two players (singles) or between four players (doubles), who use special racquets to alternatively strike a rubber ball in a four-walled court with a dedicated layout; by practicing this sport, an individual may gain a number of benefits: squash optimizes the overall state of health, improves coordination, flexibility, agility and speed of reaction, develops the capacity to concentrate and the attention span, fosters a competitive spirit, reduces stress levels, increases the resistance to effort and constitutes an activity that may successfully counteract sedentariness and obesity. Furthermore, squash is a means by which one may socialize and strengthen interpersonal relations. Taking into account that, even though squash is not extensively known in Romania, it is on the rise both from the point of view of the number of people who practice it and from the perspective of institutional organization. In order to accelerate the promotion of squash both on a national and on a regional level, a qualitative research has been conducted among squash players in Timisoara. The purpose of this research is to identify the reasons which determine one to practice squash and the interest dedicated by those who practice squash to competitions.

Abstract:
This research aimed to investigate whether athletes’ perceptions of their coach’s effectiveness on dimensions of coaching efficacy (i.e., motivation, technique, character building) predicted indicators of their competence, confidence, connection, and character in athletes from the UK and Malaysia. Athletes from team (volleyball, UK n = 46, Malaysia n = 49; hockey, UK n = 34, Malaysia n = 47; and basketball, UK n = 50, Malaysia n = 50) and individual (squash, UK n = 47, Malaysia n = 44; table tennis, UK n = 48, Malaysia n = 47; and golf, UK n = 44, Malaysia n = 47) sports completed questionnaires assessing the study variables. Multiple-regression analyses controlling for athletes’ sex, sport experience, and sport type showed in both samples that perceived motivation effectiveness positively predicted athletes’ connection and sport confidence, perceived technique effectiveness positively predicted their sport competence, and perceived character-building effectiveness positively predicted their moral identity. Thus, athletes’ perceptions of their coach may have important implications for athletes’ sport experiences in team and individual sports even in divergent cultures. Results are discussed in terms of their relevance for the coaching efficacy model and the athlete-level outcomes resulting from effective coaching.

Abstract:
Sports pose a unique challenge for high-speed, unobtrusive, uninterrupted motion tracking due to speed of movement and player occlusion, especially in the fast and competitive sport of squash. The objective of this study is to use video tracking techniques to quantify kinematics in elite-level squash. With the increasing availability and quality of elite tournament matches filmed for entertainment purposes, a new methodology of multi-player tracking for squash that only requires broadcast video as an input is proposed. This paper introduces and evaluates a markerless motion capture technique using an autonomous deep learning based human pose estimation algorithm and computer vision to detect and identify players. Inverse perspective mapping is utilized to convert pixel coordinates to court coordinates and distance traveled, court position, ‘T’ dominance, and average speeds of elite players in squash is determined. The method was validated using results from a previous study using manual tracking where the proposed method (filtered coordinates) displayed an average absolute percent error to the manual approach of 3.73% in total distance traveled, 3.52% and 1.26% in average speeds <9 m/s with and without speeds <1 m/s, respectively. The method has proven to be the most effective in collecting kinematic data of elite players in squash in a timely manner with no special camera setup and limited manual intervention.

Abstract:
Squash is a sport characterised by complex physical, technical and tactical demands. Despite its increased popularity, there is presently no synthesis of the literature pertaining to the performance requirements of squash. As such, it is difficult to generate evidence-based guidelines for applied practitioners working with squash athletes. The purposes of this review were to a) identify the most important aspects of squash performance with reference to junior and senior athletes, b) identify and discuss the available methods of assessment of squash performance and c) identify areas where further research efforts are needed so that the performance requirements of the squash game are understood. Critical analysis of literature pertaining to movement characteristics and time motion analyses, physiological demands, methods of assessing physical qualities, psychological demands and injury epidemiology were conducted. A summary of the physical characteristics of squash athletes of varying ages and playing standards is presented. Time motion analysis studies present consistent information on the game demands. There are limited data on game demands evolution from youth to senior. There appears to be usable testing protocols available for practitioners supporting squash athletes, although further work is needed to determine the applicability of these measures in junior athletes. Furthermore, better controlled studies are required to establish the injury risks associated with squash.

Abstract:
This study is positioned within the nonprofit sport context and builds on an emerging body of work in sport governance to investigate how nonprofit sport organizations can develop their governing capability. A rich data set derived from a 2-year action research study in an Australian state sport organization revealed a lack of stakeholder engagement underpinned by confusion about stakeholder-governing responsibility as the central issues in developing governance capability. The lessons drawn from the Squash Vic experience integrated with sport governance literature and stakeholder theory show the need to embed the notion of stakeholder salience or primacy to explain and clarify the dilemma of multiple stakeholders and the lack of stakeholder engagement in the governing process. We introduce Fassin’s (2012) notion of “stakeowner” and associated ideas of reciprocity and responsibility as a helpful characterization of the legal members in the stakeholdergovernance relationship.

Abstract:
In sport science, athlete tracking and motion analysis are essential for monitoring and optimizing training programs, with the goal of increasing success in competition and preventing injury. At present, contact-free, camera-based, multi-athlete detection and tracking have become a reality, mainly due to the advances in machine learning regarding computer vision and, specifically, advances in artificial convolutional neural networks (CNN), used for human pose estimation (HPE-CNN) in image sequences. Sport science in general, as well as coaches and athletes in particular, would greatly benefit from HPE-CNN-based tracking, but the sheer amount of HPE-CNNs available, as well as their complexity, pose a hurdle to the adoption of this new technology. It is unclear how many HPE-CNNs which are available at present are ready to use in out-of-the-box inference to squash, to what extent they allow motion analysis and if detections can easily be used to provide insight to coaches and athletes. Therefore, we conducted a systematic investigation of more than 250 HPE-CNNs. After applying our selection criteria of open-source, pre-trained, state-of-the-art and ready-to-use, five variants of three HPE-CNNs remained, and were evaluated in the context of motion analysis for the racket sport of squash. Specifically, we are interested in detecting player’s feet in videos from a single camera and investigated the detection accuracy of all HPE-CNNs. To that end, we created a ground-truth dataset from publicly available squash videos by developing our own annotation tool and manually labeling frames and events. We present heatmaps, which depict the court floor using a color scale and highlight areas according to the relative time for which a player occupied that location during matchplay. These are used to provide insight into detections. Finally, we created a decision flow chart to help sport scientists, coaches and athletes to decide which HPE-CNN is best for player detection and tracking in a given application scenario.

Nilsson, Björn, and John Linder. "Sport Structure and Goal Oriented Motivation." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen för psykologi, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-167443.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to assess differences in goal orientation between athletes practicing two different sports. These sports differ structurally in how they are performed and in regard to factors influencing goal orientation. The achievement goal theory (AGT) states that individuals’ motivational orientation is made up of two aspects, task oriented motivation and ego oriented motivation. These two goal orientations are independent of one another and are affected by several factors. The effect on goal orientation by factors influenced by coaches, parents and peers is well documented. The two hypotheses were that climbers would be more task-oriented than squash players and secondly that squash players would be more ego-oriented than climbers. The study was conducted as a quasi-experimental between group comparison. 81 sport practitioners, 43 rock climbers and 38 squash players, took the Task and Ego in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ) in connection with performing their sport. Independent t-tests of both sub scales showed a difference in ego-motivation between groups, but not in task-motivation.

Abstract:
Public financing of those two sports in Czech Republic is done through Czech squash association and Czech badminton association. Both those organizations are full members of Czech association of sports and also require money from Ministry of education. Those two organizations stand as main sources of finances from the public sources. I will focus on comparison of these two sports. Squash and badminton are very similar considering material, or financial side. Also the expansion of those sports in our country is more or less the same. From this point of wiew, they should also receive similar financial aid for the government. By detailed financial analyses I will try to confront both sports, differ their specifics and find out if the personal question is also playing a role. Probably the only difference between those two sports is the fact, that badminton is olympic sport, which gives it a chance to participate in programs, which are offered especially for sports that take part of the olympics. How much has this fact differ their evolution? I will find out, if badminton took advantage of this to benefit. Ministry of education and Czech sports association assign finance on behalf of certain conditions. The question is, how much these conditions influence the behavior of these associations. Must they adjust to them, or they work with them in complete synthesis and reach their goals. Only from the settings of the individual programs run by Ministry of education and Czech sports association is obvious, that it is almost impossible to satisfy both subjects.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates stress and coping in high performance squash coaching from the perspectives of both the coach and the player. An introduction to the thesis (chapter 1), a discussion of key concepts and theories from the general stress and coping literature (chapter 2), and a systematic review of the stress and coping in sport literature (chapter 3) are presented. The empirical work is reported in two phases. Phase one (chapters 4, 5 & 6) documents an in-depth study of 18 high performance squash coaches. Retrospective interviews were used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. Inductive content analysis (Patton, 1980) revealed 223 raw data themes for stress, which collapsed into 12 general dimensions, and 415 raw data themes for coping, from which 13 general dimensions emerged. Descriptive statistics on stress source characteristics revealed a number of interesting trends that required further investigation. Further, general ('multi-purpose') and specific coping strategies were identified. Coping effectiveness and frequency data detailed the analysis. Phase two (chapters 7, 8 & 9) investigates stress and coping experiences of elite squash players during coaching activities via two studies. In study one, data were collected through telephone interviews, and analysed using inductive content analysis (QSR NUDIST), revealing 227 raw data themes for stress and coping from which 9 stress and 8 coping general dimensions emerged. These results were used to develop a postal questionnaire (study two) administered to 84 elite squash players on the England Squash World Class Performance Programme (Jan. 1999). A response rate of 60% was obtained, data was input into SPSS, and various statistical tests revealed significant contributions to 5 major investigative themes detennined at the outset. An overall picture of the landscape in stress and coping in high performance squash coaching is offered, and conclusions and future directions are presented (chapter 10).

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was threefold. Primarily it was to identify the underlying motivational influences determining why mature age men and women continue playing sport competitively, long after they have reached their peak performance level. Secondly, the study sought to ascertain whether there was a change in specific temperament attributes, such as competitiveness, as Squash players became older, and whether any changes were restricted primarily to the sporting environment, or did changes pervade other areas ofthe individuals' lives. The third purpose of the study was to design a new measurement instrument for use in effectively identifying the primary motivations of mature age squash participants within Australia. The research study comprised a multi-system methodology which allowed for triangulation analysis of results. It involved both quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches, with four phases of investigation. The first phase focused on the development of a new motivation measurement instrument, titled Masters Sport Motivation Inventory (MSMI). The second phase involved a Pilot study aimed at implementing the MSMI instrument and evaluating it for validity and reliability, and sampled mature-age participants from nine different sports. The outcomes ofthe Pilot study demonstratedvalidityandreliability ofthe MSMI instrument. The third phase ofthe research comprised the main area ofinvestigation, which was to examine the motivations of Masters squash players in Australia. It used the MSMI instrument to obtain relevant data concerning the motivation of this cohort of sports competitors. The fourth phase comprised in-depth personal interviews from Australian Masters squash players. Interviewees had the opportunity to provide a greater insight into the importance of continued sporting participation into their older adult years. The MSMI data for both the Pilot and Main studies was analysed with the SPSS 15 analysis program. It was determined that there were 12 logical and interpretable motivational factors that were relevant to mature-age sports people and Australian Masters squash players. The results of the quantitative approach generally concurred with the outcomes derived from previous research which has examined the motivations of mature-age athletes, which found that health, enjoyment, fitness and competitiveness were highly relevant motives. In addition, this study extended the outcomes to include other motives viewed as being important to older athletes' sporting aspirations, such as self-awareness, team, aesthetics, skill, stress, recognition, social, and travel, The interview information was examined in two ways. Firstly, it was examined manually by the researcher. The material obtained during the interview process was classified according to groups of responses with similarities in contextual meaning, and the descriptive response data were calculated in the form ofmanual frequencies and percentages. Winning was the primary motive/outcome. Interview responses were also examined via an analysis program called Leximancer, and results revealed that differences in responses among mature-age squash players based on gender, age-class and ability level were minimal. Interview results indicated that many Masters squash players in Australia were still highly competitive, still very determined to win their matches, and still very focused on their goals and game plans. The motives derived from the Masters squash players involved in the qualitative approach generally concurred with the outcomes derived from the quantitative approach, thereby adding consistency and outcome strength to the overall research. The opportunity for mature-age squash participants to elaborate on their feelings, sporting goals and motivations to continue playing their chosen sport enabled a greater depth and wealth ofrelevant information to be examined, and revealed a change in motivational emphasis from health and fitness issues to competitive and win-related issues. The results ofthis research as a whole, in relation to the outcomes obtained from the MSMI instrument, as well as from the personal interviews, differs somewhat from the philosophy of Masters sport, whereby it is assumed and promoted that older athletes primarily participate for fun, enjoyment and social opportunities. The results obtained in this research do not necessarily support this view. Many Australian Masters squash players play to win, and they give their all in an effort to achieve this goal and to reap the pleasure of recognition and rewards for doing so.

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Introduction. International activities in physical education, sport, and kinesitherapy are connected with the translation of materials or oral interpretation. Translation is considered the art of choosing the right words to transfer information from one language to another (Steiner, 1998). Translation of specialized materials requires language skills and knowledge in the respective field (Grego, 2010). Sports students often use materials or have contacts with colleagues from other countries – at training camps, competitions, conferences, etc. Translation competence is an important part of their education and professional development. Methods. The research aimed to establish how students from the National Sports Academy “V. Levski” deal with translation and oral interpretation in their fields - physical education, sport, or kinesitherapy, and whether they would like to have more translation and interpretation activities as part of their specialized language courses at the Academy. The subjects of the study were 44 students from the three faculties of the Academy. A survey was conducted at the end of the spring term of 2021-2022. The subjects completed a questionnaire with 11 closed-ended questions. Survey data were processed with alternative analysis and a chi-square test (x²). Results and discussion. The acquired results show that more than half of the respondents need to translate documents or written materials. 68% of them rely on their own language skills. 63% also use translation tools and services but do not find them very reliable. Most of them would like to have more translation tasks and interpretation exercises as part of their language courses at the Academy. Conclusions. The study results show that sports students need to improve their competence in translation and interpretation in their field of specialization, and the language courses at the Academy should try to offer more opportunities for that.

Abstract:
Many people, especially adolescents, use mobile applications to control their physical activities and reduce sedentary behaviors. While a large variety of sports applications are available, detection of the activity type is a new research area. There are also specific methods how to measure and collect data or control the type of sports activities. Literature research shows that analysis of the current sports application market is evolving in a fast speed. Some authors show that neuron networks can help detect and analyze specific data of sports activities using sensors or mobile phone. The aim of this research was three-folded: 1) to develop sports application for a simple exercise to promote physical activity in adolescents, 2) to study the abilities of artificial intelligence in a sports application context, and 3) to create an application for detecting and counting everyday physical activity. Methodology: two applications were created, (1) for data collection, and (2) for everyday usage. Many deep learning models and their parameters were tested. Results: application prototype to detect one simple physical activity (squats) using neuron networks was created, one neuron network model to detect and count activity squats was made. Neural network models for walking and jumping rope were created. Conclusions: it is possible to use sports application for adolescents to promote their physical activity. The neuron network model can be used in mobile phone, while the use of this model is dependent on various factors.
