Once 160,000 undergraduates in the University of California system were asked to name the obstacles that hinder their academic success, the students listed various aspects, but the number one reason, which was given by 33% of the students, was that they simply didn’t know how to study. This seems to be a hard reality when it comes to even Indian colleges. As a solution to this problem, an Innovative practice was adopted by Srinivas Institute of Management Studies and started to follow a model of distributing " Study Materials" to the pupil for each semester in their undergraduate programme. This chapter analyses the discursive construction of collaborative text production via metaphors on talk pages of the English, French, and German Wikipedia. The cross-linguistic study makes use of the WikiDemoCorpus (WDC) to qualitatively reveal the source domains of these metaphors. Situated within the framework of discourse analysis in the tradition of Foucault (1966, 1969, 1971), the study analyses how Wikipedia authors use metaphors to create a certain point of view in their collaborations on talk pages. Additionally, the Wikipedia corpora available at the Leibniz Institute for the German Language (IDS) via the Corpus Search, Management and Analysis System II (COSMAS II) are used for exemplary quantification. Finally, the potential of further corpus linguistics methods for metaphor identification and analysis is discussed.

Abstract This book chapter describes the management of animal trypanosomiasis: (i) vector control/eradication; (ii) use of trypanocides; and (iii) use of trypanotolerant breeds of cattle. Vector control includes reducing the tsetse fly population with traps and insecticides, and in areas with a high population of trypanosome infected tsetse, animals are prophylactically administered antiparasitic drugs. To date, there is no AAT vaccine available, as discussed below. While disappointing with respect to AAT control, studies of AAT pathogenesis at ILRAD/ILRI did identify the definitive question for immunological research on AAT, namely, how do trypanosomes eliminate TD antibody responses in trypanosomiasis-susceptible mammals? In addition, the work at ILRI on the genetic basis of trypanotolerance contributed a high-density singlenucleotide polymorphism (SNP) map of the bovine genome that has intrinsic value for analysis of QTLs that control other traits, including susceptibility to other diseases.

Abstract:
AbstractLife cycle assessments (LCA) approaches, analysing potential impacts associated with the production and use of biomass for energy and material purposes, have become increasingly important in recent years. An internal project at the Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum- DBFZ is investigating, which priority areas have been addressed at the institute with LCA. The preliminary results of the study show mostly practice-linked applications with a focus on the assessment of fuels, their production and technical feasibility. In this publication, we present one of the studies analysed, in which a simplified LCA approach defined in the renewable energy directive (RED II), was applied. Based on primary data from 10 biogas and biomethane supply chains in Germany, the applicability of the RED II greenhouse gas (GHG) emission calculation approach was analysed. Most of the biogas plants assessed were found to be compliant with the required minimum GHG emissions reduction. Storage of digestate, N-fertilization and the use of fossil diesel were identified as the main factors, influencing the GHG intensity of the respective value chains. Additionally, individual calculation requires a high effort for data collection. The availability of tools and default values could therefore support market actors with an efficient implementation of the RED II.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractFor many, the question who do we think we are? connotes a very specific moral, the Law of Jante: You are not to think that you are anything special. As formulated by the Danish-Norwegian author Aksel Sandemose in A Fugitive Crosses His Tracks (1933/2010), this law was once a satirical description of the social norms that Sandemose meant governed the behaviours and attitudes of working-class Norwegians and Danes into conformity and hostility towards individual success in the fictional village of Jante. Over the years, however, it has come to depict the egalitarian Scandinavian cultures as well as to acquire a kind of proverbial resonance both within and outside these cultures. In this chapter, it is argued that life in academia historically has represented quite the opposite of the Law of Jante, but that it is increasingly imbued by the moral of Sandemose’s satire. This development is fuelled by an assemblage of different ideas and phenomena such as the postmodern demise of science as a grand narrative, the expansion of higher education, the neoliberal university, and the Bologna reform. Each and every one of these changes, we argue, in different ways and to different extents, forms a fertile soil for the Law of Jante, and together contribute to the vulgarization of the academic scholar’s (dis)position. We then trace how the Law of Jante has been enacted by business schools, struggling to strike a balance between business and academia or, as (Engwall, Mercury meets Minerva: Business studies and higher education: The Swedish case. Economic Research Institute, Stockholm School of Economics, 2009) has put it with reference to Roman mythology, between Mercury and Minerva. Finally, we problematize the Law’s (de)moralizing consequences for scholars in the fields of management and organization.

The Pharmacy studies held in the Arcispedale di S. Abstract:
Abstract The collection of temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH) data is a ubiquitous component of collection management, and plays a central role in understanding the preservation state of the collection, building envelope performance, climate control system operation, and loan policies. Such insights require that the data be analyzed and interpreted, with the results effectively communicated to stakeholders with varying levels of expertise. Analysis of T and RH data often relies on the native software from sensor/data logger producers. However, there exist several conservation-focused analysis tools that examine this data from complementary perspectives; their collective presentation as a ‘toolkit’ allows users to draw upon the individual strengths of each, but is hampered by limited awareness of the available tools and a lack of didactic support to foster their effective use. The Managing Collection Environments Initiative at the Getty Conservation Institute has developed a workshop curriculum that begins to address this gap by (a) establishing a baseline of knowledge on the fundamentals of data analysis and visualization, (b) presenting a survey of existing online T and RH analysis tools, and (c) demonstrating their application and interpretation for various case studies. To date, the authors have organized two virtual synchronous workshops, and plan to development a free asynchronous course.
