Full text
Abstract:
In 2003, African Union Member Countries committed themselves to ending hunger in Africa by 2025, later known as the Maputo Declaration. With two years remaining, this blog focuses on the performance of IsDB Sub-Saharan Africa Member Countries (IsDB SSA MCs). To achieve the goal of ending hunger, the declaration’s primary aim was to allocate 10% of national budgets to agriculture and attain a 6% annual growth rate in the sector, focusing on land and water management, rural infrastructure, food production, and hunger reduction, and agricultural research and technology.

Quak, Evert-jan. Guidance Note on Supporting a Demographic Transition in SSA. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.053.

Full text
Abstract:
This guidance note is about how donors, can support a demographic transition in sub- Saharan Africa. The demographic transition is the evolution from high to low mortality and fertility rates, with associated changes in age structures. Countries in sub-Saharan Africa are on a trajectory of rapid population growth. Mortality rates have been declining for some time while fertility rates started to fall later and at a slower pace, resulting in high population growth. It is estimated that the population of sub-Saharan Africa will double between 2020 and 2050 to 2.5 billion. This guidance note refe

Abstract:
This research paper provides a regional review of the state of electricity access in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), focusing on installed capacity, electricity generation, the growth of renewable energy, electricity consumption, government investment, public financial flows, and several major initiatives. The study contrasts electrification between 1990 and 2010 with recent efforts and identifies countries that are consistently making progress and those that lag. The analyses show signs of progress on scaling up SSA power infrastructure and increasing electricity access, particularly in the Eastern

Full text
Abstract:
This study traces the evolution of the World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations on liberalising trade in Environmental Goods and Services (EGS). It explores the challenges and opportunities faced by Commonwealth small states and countries in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) in participating in EGS discussions. Small states and SSA countries have been primarily absent from the multilateral discussions on EGS for reasons that include insufficient trade-related interests in environmental goods. Notwithstanding, these countries should partake in these discussions especially amid the changing economic a

Issue 172 of Trade Hot Topics provides an overview of recent developments in the evolving COVID-19 vaccine landscape. It highlights some of the challenges and opportunities for ensuring equitable and affordable access to vaccines among Commonwealth developing countries—especially small states, least-developed countries (LDCs) and countries in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

Full text
Abstract:
In 2021, the world spent more than US$520 billion to subsidise fossil fuels.1 This could have paid for COVID-19 vaccinations for every person in the world or provided three times the annual amount needed to eradicate poverty (Africa Renewal, 2021). By encouraging demand and excessive consumption of cheaper fossil fuels, these subsidies distort markets, shield people from price signals and contribute to several macroeconomic imbalances, including higher global inflation (Gilmour, 2022). Successfully reforming fossil fuel subsidies requires wider economic policy reforms alongside systematic chan

Abstract:
Female entrepreneurship programmes often seek women’s economic empowerment through opportunities and skills to generate higher-paid and more stable jobs. Income and jobs do not automatically empower women but can contribute as they generate the necessary resources that support agency. It is important that sufficient and decent jobs, and other employment and income opportunities, are created and made accessible for women. This paper is part of the MUVA Paper Series on female entrepreneurship. The question that it tries to answer is how to do this through the means of female entrepreneurship pro

Abstract:
This issue of Trade Hot Topics examines the broader threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemic to the food security of developing countries, including most Commonwealth small states, LDCs and SSA countries. It argues that the pandemic provides strong evidence in support of finding a permanent solution at the WTO to public stockholding (PSH) for food security to provide assurance on enough food supplies in future crises.

Full text
Abstract:
While China has been increasingly contributing to the recent growth in electricity generation in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the effects of China-funded investment on host countries’ debt burden and transition to renewable energy sources have not been sufficiently explored. Drawing on secondary data, combined with deep dive studies of Ethiopia and Uganda, this paper shows that despite significant liberalisation of the power sector in SSA, Chinese investments in the electricity industry continue to follow state-led project contract-based models. We show that this approach has failed to encourage

Abstract:
The worsening of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in March 2020 triggered a sudden shift from in-person to virtual and hybrid forms of diplomatic communication and negotiation, including at the World Trade Organization (WTO). This paper identifies the challenges and opportunities that this shift presents to least developed countries (LDCs), small states and sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries in the Commonwealth. These include technical issues, negotiating design and format issues, and geopolitical questions. The paper draws on interviews with officials, diplomats, and other experts and sta
