Abstract:
Taxation disputes sit at a unique intersection of law where the boundaries of arbitration are clearly defined. When a company challenges a tax assessment, the law unequivocally places the authority to resolve such disputes in the hands of the court. That court serves as the guardian of government revenue and corporate taxation, recognizing the critical importance of these issues to the state’s functioning. Unlike other disputes that may be resolved through arbitration—a process prized for its flexibility—taxation is so deeply intertwined with public policy that it cannot be e

People’s reactions to crimes sometimes change depending on whether the perpetrators are members of their own ingroup or an outgroup. This observation results in questions concerning how moral reasoning works in intergroup situations. In this research, we analyzed the combined effect of the nationality of the protagonist in a moral dilemma and the participant’s social dominance orientation (SDO) attitudes on the participant’s level of moral reasoning. A total of 230 Italian participants responded to two moral dilemmas taken from the Defining Issues Test, which had been modified so that one was

Civil society is widely considered as a crucial element in contemporary society. Academics and policy makers have traditionally associated it with voluntary associations and organizations, assuming that associational life is an ideal intermediary between citizens and government. While members of associations form large social networks, which they can mobilize at critical moments, the conviviality of group sociability fosters the development of a set of common values, such as a democratic political culture and other civic virtues. Its origins are generally situated in the eighteenth century, an

In particular, it highlights the pluralism (with respect to different ideological orientations, cultural perspectives and educational sectors: philosophical, historical, social, didactic, special, experimental and physical) that characterizes the Society as well as the cultural paradigms which, especially at the beginning, generated a discussion on the place and purpose of pedagogy within the broader f

This paper focuses on the interplay between Conservative thought as evinced by the current Conservative Party leadership and the idea of responsibility, which is a central concern in the Big Society programme. I show that responsibility holds different meanings based on attitudes to work and the welfare state and that the differentiation in meaning map onto a working class/middle class distinction. I then argue that the ‘good society’ as it emerges from the Big Society idea would be a more stratified one that accepts large degrees of inequality. Leaving the conceptual plane, I then provide sup

“Civil society,” in the definition proposed in the introduction to this special issue, was not solely a product of the Enlightenment or of elite sociability. This article focuses on eighteenth-century confraternities in Paris and Milan to argue that these religious associations fostered the kinds of values and behaviors that most writers associate with the formation of civil society: cooperation, charity, a sense of responsibility, and peaceful interaction both among the members and between them and others in society. Many of them encouraged a culture of independence and a sense of rights amon
