Abstract:
This is a study of the presence and function of Scripture within the first two chapters of Paul's letter to the Galatians. The study takes a broad, comprehensive look at the intertextual relationships that exist between Paul's presuppositions, statements and arguments and the Scriptures of Israel. These relationships go beyond the use of citations and allusions (which are not conspicuous in these chapters) and include implicit and intuitive uses which are recognized and which function in ways quite distinct from more formal and explicit uses of Scripture. These more subtle and implicit uses of

Although there is a vast body of secondary literature on Mark 4:11-12, the interpretation of this passage has been dominated by source, form, and redaction critical methods which have tended to limit, or even discount, the importance of these verses in the Gospel. This study, in contrast, uses reader response criticism. Graeco-Roman rhetoric, and sociological approaches as aids to understanding the literary and social functions of Mark 4:11-12. Since the methods used in this study are still fairly novel in New Testament research, the first two chapters provide a detailed introduction to interp

This thesis explores the relationship between Donne's Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions (1623) and his early sermons. Its underlying contention is the existence in the Devotions of a highly organized, thematic structure, which not only focusses major concerns scattered through the sermons, but places them in typological relation. Chapters 1-4 concentrate on Donne's discussion of these concerns in the sermons; Chapter 5 then demonstrates their recognizable convergence in the Devotions to trace an evolving narrative. Attempts by several commentators to map categories from contemporary epistemology onto Aquinas' theory of knowledge, and their attempts to give an account of his theory of perceptual knowledge constitute the background to this thesis. The widespread uniformity of ritual chant for St. Katherine in late medieval sources suggests that its history had always been characterized by stability and consistency. A study of eleventh- and twelfth-century sources, however, reveals an earlier diversity of liturgical practice. Although these chant families would extend across Europe and the boards of the Mediterranean Sea, they were all created contemporaneously in close proximity to medieval Rouen. Mo

This priority challenges both 'liberal' despair and fundamentalist arrogation of true reference to theological language and appropriate Biblical interpretation. This hermeneutical position also faces the postmodern challenge that there can be any truth at all, and, in particular, truth brought through the deconstruction of textuality as a medium.
