In the archives of Propaganda there is an evocative letter in which John Henry Newman urges the Cardinal Prefect not to grant permission for Catholic youths to attend Oxford or Cambridge. It is of significance because the views evinced are not those commonly associated with Newman in the years after 1865:

Ernest Oldmeadow, in the second volume of his biography—some have said hagiography—of Cardinal Bourne, begins the chapter in which he deals with the First World War with the following statement: When the ‘Great’ War broke out, Cardinal Bourne was in a better position than that of some other religious leaders. Many of them, before calling their followers to fight with might and main against the enemy, had to recant or explain away their pacifist pasts. Some of them had pronounced all war unjustifiable, and had obstructed the training of their fatherland's manhood, even for defence. Not so Franc

According to John Flete, the fifteenth-century historian of Westminster Abbey, Abbot Richard de Berkyng (d. 1246) bequeathed to the Abbey two curtains or dorsalia which he had procured for the choir, depicting the story of the Saviour and St Edward. Nothing is known about the appearance of these textiles; but they were presumably of fine quality, befitting the patronage of a Treasurer of England, and were evidently intended to hang in the choir stalls. There they remained until after the Dissolution. According to a sixteenth-century commentary with transcriptions of the original texts in the h

AbstractThis article draws attention to a series of seven English annotations in a mid-twelfth-century copy of Bede’sHistoria ecclesiasticafrom Bury St Edmunds. It demonstrates that the annotations reflect the comparison of Bede’s Latin with a now-lost manuscript of the Old English Bede shortly after the twelfth-century codex’s production. The annotations are shown to hold a respect for the authority of the Old English Bede that contrasts with the prevailing twelfth-century attitude of gentle suspicion towards earlier vernacular translations.

Edmund Campion arrived in Dublin on August 25, 1570, on a travelling fellowship from St. John’s College, Oxford. This five-year leave of absence enabled him to postpone ordination in the Elizabethan church. Campion was invited to stay with the Recorder of Dublin, James Stanihurst, whose library was to satisfy his academic needs, and who was hoping that Campion might help with the university that formed a key part of the program of reform in Ireland. Campion had ignored calls from friends already at the English college in Douai to join them. Dublin was meant to be a quiet pause, allowing Campio

Chapter 6 examines Cambridge’s performance at a regional and national level. Cambridge’s position relative to other leading towns nearby, such as Ely, Bury St Edmunds, King’s Lynn, Huntingdon and St Ives, is examined. The competitiveness of its market is evaluated through assessment of its transport connections and the local charters for market and fairs in the Cambridge area. Once again new information is brought to bear on the subject; in this case the account rolls of the Merton manor in Cambridge, previously owned by the Dunning family and subsequently acquired by Walter de Merton for the

The biographical outlines are, of course, sketched out in his entry in Who’s Who. A child of the rectory in Yorkshire, he was educated at Oakham School, Rutland, and was called up for national service between 1950 and 1951. He then entered Queen’s College, Oxford, graduating with a first class degree in Jurisprudence in 1954.
