Abstract:
Describes the history of the recurring impulse for independence from the St. Kitts-Nevis state on the part of Nevis. Author examines the modern political history of the St. Kitts-Nevis state, in order to discern the motivations of the Nevisian people and politicians for their wish of secession. First, he sketches how Nevis and St. Kitts were historically linked since the 17th c., but that socioeconomic differences developed; as after the decline of sugar and plantation agriculture on both islands, St Kitts developed a largely proletarian rural population, whereas Nevis' population came to consist more of smallholders, resulting in the labour movement having more influence in St Kitts than in Nevis, which also had political repercussions. Nevisian parties favoured secession. Author reconstructs elections, partisan and general political developments in the St. Kitts-Nevis union since the 1950s, describing the long dominance of the St. Kitts-dominated Labour Party, and responses in Nevis. For Nevisian secession there seemed to be popular support. In 1998, however, the required majority on Nevis for secession was not obtained. Author concludes that the Nevisian wish for secession did not stem from any strong nationalistic zeal, or a particularly strong sense of separate identity or ethnicity, but mainly from economic and political reasons.

Abstract:
Introduction: Information on the prevalence of keratinophilic fungi in West Indies is scanty. Occurrence of keratinophilic fungi in soils of St. Kitts and Nevis has not been investigated previously. Methodology: The prevalence of keratinophilic fungi was investigated in 108 samples of soils of varying habitats from St. Kitts and 55 such samples from Nevis by hair-baiting technique. Fungal growths appearing on the hair baits after four to eight weeks of incubation at room temperature were microscopically examined and cultured on mycological media. Cultures were identified on the basis of colonial and microscopic features. Results: Forty-nine (45%) of the samples from St. Kitts and 38 (69%) from Nevis were positive for keratinophilic fungi. Microsporum gypseum complex, a well-known geophilic dermatophyte, was the most frequently recovered species being present in 15.7% of soils of St. Kitts and 40% of soils of Nevis. The next commonest species recovered was Chrysosporium indicum, represented by 15 (13.9%) isolates from St. Kitts and seven (12.7%) isolates from Nevis. Other infrequently isolated keratinophilic species included Chrysosporium tropicum, Chrysosporium keratinophilum, and unidentified Chrysosporium species. Conclusions: This study is the first of its kind in the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis. A high incidence of M. gypseum complex in the soil of these islands is a noteworthy finding of public health significance.

Donelly, Bowrin Eva. "'I want to be somebody' : identities of primary school leavers on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2012. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/50046/.

Full text
Abstract:
The research reported in this thesis is an investigation of identities of primary school leavers (10-13 years old) residing on the Caribbean territory, St. Kitts. Through two main phases and a pilot of an ethnography conducted intermittently between 2008 and 2011, I explored volunteer-participants' individual and collective identities. In particular, I explored their aspirations for the future and everyday living, the influences they perceive, and conceptualizations of and aspirations for the Caribbean. The aim was to gain insights into their understanding of Caribbean, thus, illuminating Caribbean-identity; two terms fuelling debates in the Social Science literature alleging a Caribbean-identity crisis. One of the main innovations of the design was my partnership with a group of primary school leavers who were trained to help as co-researchers to collaboratively generate and partially analyse data. The findings suggest participants have very positive perceptions of themselves as individuals; however, their identities seem more localized. They generally aspire to migrate, especially to America, to achieve success, and their conceptions of Caribbean vary greatly and seem uncertain while their overarching-aspiration for their island and region is for them to become "better" places socially, economically, politically, culturally, and environmentally. In part, this main finding conflicts with the idea of an identity-crisis on an individual-level, but supports ideas of a lack of a resolute sense of self on a regional-collective level for participants. Equally important, participants report many positive impacts resulting from their involvement. For some, the process contributed clarity about self and aspirations, and for others, it helped with not only a clearer-perspective, but also the development of life-skills.

Abstract:
Ecotourism is a popular tool for biodiversity conservation and local community development. It has long been argued that the depth of community involvement and support is imperative in creating effective and sustainable ecotourism programs, although widespread community involvement is rarely achieved in practice. Local perceptions of the benefits and impacts of ecotourism development and held values for the resources utilized in ecotourism activities may influence community support and decisions to be involved; however, little is understood as to why such perceptions exist. This research highlights community perceptions of ecotourism and held values for sea turtles and explains the emergence of these perceptions within two villages on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts. Data were collected through face-to-face community surveys, key-informant interviews, and participant observation during the summer of 2012. The field data revealed that community members did not perceive ecotourism to be widely beneficial, but instead viewed the government, people who work in the tourism industry, and tourists themselves to benefit from ecotourism practices. Further, community members perceived ecotourism as negatively affecting poor people, people who do not work in the tourism industry, and the environment. These perceptions of who or what is affected by ecotourism development were traced back through centuries of political-ecological processes on St. Kitts that have mediated local people’s relationship with their land and resources, as well as their relationships with each other. The results of this research suggest a focus on the role of ecotourism in amending the persistent marginalization of local people from their resources by applying a participatory development approach to ecotourism development through collaboration with existing community groups and social networks.

In XIth International Congress on Thrombosis and Haemostasis. Schattauer GmbH, 1987. http://dx.doi.org/10.1055/s-0038-1643152.

Full text
Abstract:
Defibrotide was able to prevent the hemodynamic and biochemical alterations caused by acute myocardial ischemia (AMI) induced by coronary occlusion in the cat when infused 3.5 h before and 5 h after left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) occlusion. In the platelet perfused heart, Defibrotide was a selective stimulator of coronary vascular PGI^ but not of platelet thromboxane formation. The present study was designed both to investigate the effects of Defibrotide injected 30 min after the induction of acute myocardial ischemia (AMI) in the cat and to evaluate the ability of this drug to reduce infarct size. In the first set of experiments a permanent ligature (5 hours) was placed around LAD. ST segment from ECG, mean aortic pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR) and the pressure-heart rate index (PRI) were considered. Plasma and tissue creatine phosphckinase activity (CFK), tissue lactate and ATP were measured by enzymatic kits from Boehringer Biochemia. 30 min after coronary occlusion a loading dose of Defibrotide (32 ng Kg-1 ) was administered i.v. immediately followed by an infusion (32 ng Kg-1 h 4.5 h-1) MAP, HR and PRI were not modified either by AMI or by the infusion of Defibrotide. AMI-ST segment increases were reduced by Defibrotide from 0.5 h after the beginning of the treatment (—49% vs. AMI control) to the and of experiments (-83% vs. AMI control after 5 h occlusion period). Plasma CFK was reduced from 2.5 h after the beginning of the treatment (-29%) till the end of experiments (-52%). Ischemic tissue CFK, lactate and ATP were normalized by Defibrotide. In the second set of experiments the animals were infused with Defibrotide (50 or 200 mg Kg-1 h-1 , i.v.) starting 2 hours before coronary ligature. The infusion was maintained throughout the 5 h occlusion period. The risk and infarct areas were measured by Evans blu and nitroblue tetrazoliun staining. The 51 ± 3% of risk area was infarcted in AMI control cats. Defibrotide at the two tested doses significantly reduced these infarct areas to 42 ± 4% and 34 ± 2% of risk areas respectively. The beneficial effects of Defibrotide observed in AMI could be attributed both to its ability to enhance PGI2 release from vascular walls and to improved local tissue oxygenation and energy supplies. However it could be taken into account a direct cytoprotective action.
