Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines three instances of Byzantine icons' declaration and demonstration of love: the Mandylion, the miraculous self-portrait of Christ, which arrived in Edessa in part as a veil that transfigured the wearer, the apostle Thaddaeus, and recipient, king Abgar; the icon of St. Paul that St. John Chrysostom kept by him when he wrote, which guaranteed the presence of that holy figure, as witnessed by John's peeping-tom assistant Proclus; and the icon of St. Macarius the Great and his Cherub that shows the fellow-love of that saint projected into the apparition of the Cherub. The writings of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite are the underpinning for the love these objects respond to and generate: love here is the desire to be unified with the divine and the good, and this unity is always brought about through human desire.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to bibliologic researches of the collection of Slavic manuscripts from the library of the Greek monastery of St. Paul in Mount Athos by Archimandrite Leonid (Kavelin). It tells about the history of the library of the Greek monastery of St. Paul. Through the study of various unpublished and published sources we were able to reestablish one of the moments of the history of the Serbian-Slavic manuscripts in this library, first presented in this article. A published source is a scientific work by Archimandrite Leonid (Kavelin) «Slavic-Serbian stocks in Mount Athos, in the monasteries Hilandar and St. Paul». Particular attention is paid to such a valuable source as Archimandrite correspondence with the inhabitants of Mount Athos monasteries, in particular, Hieromonk Macarius (Sushkin), librarian Azary (Poptsov), V. A. Dashkov - a director of Moscow Public Museum. The monastery library was visited by famous personalities in the history of book culture such as Archimandrite Porfiry (Uspensky), Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin), archaeographer and Slavicist V. I. Grigorovich, English traveler and writer Robert Curzon. The article objective is to establish the role of Archimandrite Leonid (Kavelin) in saving Slavic manuscripts of St. Paul's monastery library through their acquisition of Rumyantsev Public Museum in Moscow. Unfortunately, due to a number of circumstances, the manuscripts were not acquired, and were burned at the beginning of the XX century.

Abstract:
The paper is dedicated to the scientific publication and commentary on the construction and painting of the Epiphany Cathedral in Kostroma Epiphany Convent of Anastasia (CIR4010) in 1559-1562/63. The Cathedral was built with the blessing of St. Macarius, Metropolitan of Moscow, on the initiative and at the expense of Hegumen Isaiya (worldly Shaposhnikov) and the monastic brothers, as well as on the donations made by Prince Vladimir of Staritsa and others. The paper states that the Cathedral was consecrated by Archbishop Nikandr of Rostov on June 8, 1559, on the day of the namesake of Feodor, son of Ivan the Terrible, and the consecration ceremony was of a Church-state character. The inscription contains unique information, which has not been preserved in other sources, about the attachment of particles of the relics of St. Theodore the Black, Prince of Yaroslavl and his offsprings David and Konstantin in the antimins of the consecrated Church, as well as the fresco painting of the Cathedral, produced in 1562/61. Thus, the published inscription is a unique monument of memorial epigraphy, reporting both information on the architectural and art history of Kostroma in the late 1550s to the early 1560s, and containing important material about reverence of St. Theodore, Prince of Yaroslavl, and his offsprings in Kostroma land.

Abstract:
In this article the author examines the meaning of the Church Slavonic words vъzglavlenije (literally ‘heading’) and vъzgraždenije (literally ‘erecting’) that occur in the Great Menaion Reader compiled in the 16th century under the supervision of St. Macarius, metropolitan of Moscow. These words have been used to translate the Greek term ἀνακεφαλαίωσις ‘recapitulation’ in Constantinopolitan Patriarch Tarasios’ Homily on the Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple. The first Slavonic word is a specific derivational and semantic calque. The second one seems to be more correct as the exact semantic equivalent for the Greek word. Comparative analysis of derivative relationships of the Church Slavonic words and their comparison with Greek data as well as the treatment of some unique and rare passages, including those of a theological character, make it possible to establish previously uncovered lexical meaning of the words vъzglavlenije and vъzgraždenije ‘implementation.’ The problem of theological commentary in historical dictionaries of a general character is also covered in this article.

Abstract:
The article discusses a project publication of an Orthodox journal called “The Apologist”, proposed by St. Theophanes in 1861 in a letter to K. K. Zederholm (later hieromonk of the Optina Hermitage Clement). St. Theophanes suggested members of the editorial board, the main headings of the journal, described in detail the working methods of the editorial team. Among the closest companions of the saint were A. D. and K. D. Ushinsky, S. O. Burachok, V. I. Askochensky, N. V. Elagin, and others. The project of publishing the journal was approved by the St. Macarius of Optina. The new edition, designed to protect the Orthodox faith and morality, was particularly relevant in an era of weaker censorship and a sharp increase in the periodicals of a liberal-Westernist direction. The project of the magazine with the meaningful name “The Apologist” testified to the active position of St. Theophanes in the field of church and public life in Russia in the second half of the 19th century, it showed his unremitting zeal in protecting Orthodoxy, his readiness to fight various sects and false teachings. Unfortunately, the project for the publication of the journal was never realized.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to describe the syntactic features of one of the first written monuments in southern Selkup by St. Macarius (Nevsky) «Conversations About the True God and True Faith in the Dialect of Ob Ostyaks». The analyzed material is included in the Central-Ob dialect of the Selkup language. The translation of the monument into Selkup was made by St. Macarius from the Altaic language. The literal Russian translation is also attached to the text. The text of the monument was analyzed to identify the order of the main constituents of the sentence: S — subject, V — predicate, O — direct object. The dominant word orders of the text are SOV, SV и OV, which fully correspond to the word order in Samoyedic languages in general and in Selkup in particular. Special constructions consisting of an imperfect converb and a verb, as well as infinite clauses with a nomen actionis in the locative case to express the circumstance of time, are spread in the text. When compared with modern Middle-Ob texts, constructions with imperfect converbs and verbs are still frequent, while examples with a nomen actionis in the locative case are absent. Instead of them finite clauses with the connectives and connective words are used. The conjunctionless link type of the homogeneous parts of the sentence, as well as of complex sentences, is common. Connectives and connective words, including those borrowed from the Russian language, are also used. Comparing the obtained data with modern materials on the Middle-Ob dialect, no significant changes are noted in this aspect. The conjunctionless link type of the homogeneous parts of the sentence, as well as of complex sentences, is combined with parallel use of connectives and connective words, including those borrowed from the Russian language. Comparing the obtained data with modern materials on the Middle-Ob dialect, the use of connectives and connective words gained a foothold.

Soboleva, Alexandra E. "The Synaxarion Redaction of the Life of St. Alexander Svirsky: A Reconstruction of the Early Stages of the Text History." Slovene 5, no. 1 (2016): 148–83. http://dx.doi.org/10.31168/2305-6754.2016.5.1.5.

Abstract:
The paper addresses the problems of the attribution and the geographical and chronological origins of the synaxarion redaction of the Life of St. Alexander Svirsky; it relies on textological, codicological, and palaeographic analysis of the surviving manuscripts. The author draws some conclusions about the formation of the regional variants of this medieval hagiographic text. Alexander Svirsky was the only Christian saint who was honored by receiving a manifestation of the Holy Trinity; this occurred in 1508. He founded the monastery of the Holy Trinity and was its archpriest until his dormition in 1533. The Life of Alexander Svirsky was written in 1545 by Herodion Kochnev, one of the saint’s acolytes, at the directive of Metropolitan Macarius for the Great Menaion Reader. The Life of St. Alexander Svirsky survives in a large number of copies— about 200—from the 16th and 17th centuries. Only nine of these copies show the text variant that the author of this study calls “the synaxarion variant”; they appear in synaxaria from the second half of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th centuries. Word-by-word text comparison allows one to conclude that these nine copies fall into three different redactions, each reflecting Herodion’s text. All three redactions originate from different areas, and they differ in subject matter and in the methods of elaboration of the Menaion text. On the one hand, this confirms that obviously there was a great need for this kind of text; on the other hand, it acknowledges the absence of a norm by means of which such texts might be compiled. The first, earliest, synaxarion redaction survives in seven copies, including one of the earliest copies of the Life, which dates back to 1549, according to a note by the scribe. It might have been created soon after Herodion’s text for the Great Menaion Reader to coincide with Alexander’s canonization in 1547. Despite the small number of surviving copies, this redaction was rather widespread and was known in Pskov and Novgorod, in the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, and probably in Romanov. The other two redactions were found in late, isolated copies. The second synaxarion redaction is known from the Vologda Synaxarion, and the third one—from the Synaxarion delivered from Moscow to Mozhaysk.

The book "The Sanctuaries of Venice" by Archpriest Alexei Olegovich Yastrebov is already well known to readers. Its first edition was published back in 2010 in Padua, Italy, and already in 2011 the guide received the award in memory of Metropolitan Macarius of Moscow and Kolomna, which highlighted not only the educational, but also the scientific merits of the author. The second edition was also published abroad in 2013, but the needs of the Russian reader were still unsatisfied. This is understandable - the book was still only available in Italy. It is all the more encouraging that in 2019 Poznaniye Publishing House has undertaken a third, this time Russian edition of the book. The Shrines of Venice saw the light of day in the autumn, and on 10 December 2019 the official presentation of the volume took place in the conference hall of the St Cyril and Methodius All-Church Postgraduate and Doctoral School.

Abstract:
Introduction. The paper substantiates the application of aesthetic characteristics to the examination of the image of Russian elders. It is proposed to move away from the traditional understanding of aesthetics only as a philosophy of art and beauty and consider it as a knowledge of the unique expressiveness of the essence of a sensually perceived phenomenon. The position is put forward that the phenomenal image of a person is a consequence of his lifestyle, and the image of the Russian elders, given the special way of their existence, is characterized by its original aesthetics of good-imaged beauty.Methodology and sources. The author shows the interaction and interconnectedness of the “external” and “internal” in the human image. To do this, we study the substantial proximity of the ancient phenomenon of kalocagathy and the Christian phenomenon of good-imaged, each of which, however, embodies a fundamentally different understanding of man (cosmological-plastic and personality-visual). The author emphasizes the fundamental for Orthodox anthropology and mysticism understanding of light in Hesychasm and the unity of Truth, Love and Beauty. The provision of P. A. Florensky, that the revealed truth is love, and the realized love is beauty. The general methodological basis of the work is a philosophical-anthropological, phenomenological and culturalhermeneutical attitude in the study of the aesthetics of the human image on the example of the beautiful beauty of the Russian elders. Results and discussion. The phenomenon of elderity is considered in the broad context of Orthodox and especially Russian history and culture, for which it is recognized in the most important archetypal type. Its main components and specific characteristics are considered. Particularly emphasizes the role in its occurrence and development of St. Nile of Sora and St. Paisiya Velichkovsky. The image of the Russian elder is regarded as an authentic embodiment of the practical implementation of the Orthodox mysticism of love, light and beauty. The special importance of the visual image of a person in Russian culture is emphasized. Based on the material of a wide appeal to the history of Russian senility, especially the XIX–XX centuries, a special type of spiritual asceticism, anthropology and educational communication is revealed. Defined by the experience of constant love, the image of the noble beauty of the elders (such as, for example, Leo, Macarius, Ambrose Optinsky) is recognized in Orthodoxy as a living icon of God, the ability is recognized through its visual perception to transform and improve people, and characteristic evidence is recalled about the effects of aesthetics this beautiful beauty.Conclusion. At the end of the paper, the author explores the specific nature of the perception of Russian elders, highlighting the visual and aesthetic component of this perception and emphasizing the importance of the beauty of their spiritual and phenomenal well-being as an aesthetic embodiment of love for people.

Abstract:
For the first time since the tradition began in 1925, the quinquennial census of seabirds in the Migratory Bird Sanctuaries of the North Shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence was divided between two years in 1998-1999. Trends between 1993 and 1998-1999 were variable across species and sanctuaries. In particular, following the large decreases in both species noted in 1993, the 1998-1999 survey showed that Black-legged Kittiwakes had declined further, while the number of Herring Gulls had stabilized. Alcids were all doing well except for the Atlantic Puffin which showed severe yet unexplained drops at all major colonies. Law enforcement efforts appear reflected in seabird population trends, as well-patrolled sanctuaries such as St. Mary's Islands seem to do well, whereas many species at the Baie des Loups and Île à la Brume sanctuaries are far from their historical levels. In addition to a better law enforcement program, research is needed in order to identify other conservation problems that some species may be facing.

Abstract:
The Migratory Bird Sanctuaries of the North Shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence are important breeding grounds for many seabird species. The quinquennial censuses of seabirds in these sanctuaries have been carried out for 80 years (since 1925), in order to detect changes in the distribution and population levels of seabirds breeding on the North Shore. Between 1998-1999 and 2005, the most striking trends observed were the near doubling in numbers of Common Eiders in most sanctuaries, and the strong population growth rate of Razorbill. Unexplainable declines of Common Murre and Atlantic Puffin were observed at some of the larger colonies of these species. The last active colonies of Leach’s Storm-Petrel (Corossol Island) and Caspian Tern (Île à la Brume) on the North Shore seem on the verge of disappearing, with zero and three birds observed in 2005, respectively. Seabird populations in the larger, more accessible and disturbed sanctuaries are still markedly smaller than in historical times.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article aims to make a comparison between the teaching of St. John Climacus and that of St. Gregory of Nyssa, with a specific focus on the complex of ideas related to perpetual progress. While one must proceed with caution, a number of close and significant parallels can nevertheless be indicated: a dynamic concept of spiritual perfection, the definition of virtue as limitless, the idea of a perpetual growth in love, and the inclusion of the angels in this progress. I suggest that the best way for explaining these analogies is to admit a (direct) influence of Gregory on John. As a consequence, John Climacus must be counted with a group of Eastern authors holding similar views that includes (Pseudo‐)Macarius, Maximus the Confessor, Symeon the New Theologian, Gregory of Sinai, Gregory Palamas and Kallistos Angelikoudes. These authors appear in fact to be witnesses of a tradition of thought that stems back to Gregory of Nyssa.

Abstract:
This article examines the Old Russian ideas about the other world and various interpretations of the earthly paradise. The author focuses on the content of Orthodox, apocryphal, and legendary texts about the other world, referring both to published and archival sources. The article reviews and compares texts that describe the other world and the path to earthly paradise, including Epistle about Paradise, The Legend of St Macarius the Roman, Zosima’s Journey to Rahmans, Agapius’ Journey to Paradise, Is Paradise Sensuous or Sensible?, About Paradise Rivers, Questions and Answers of St Athanasius to Antiochus, The Explanatory Palaea, A Word about the Righteous Creed, etc. Issues connected with the other world are studied with an interdisciplinary approach, i. e. the ideological and religious interpretation is combined with the methods of specific historical and textual analysis. It is established that there was no common understanding of the other world in Old Rus’, which is reflected in arguments about paradise. There were three concepts of the nature of paradise: earthly paradise; paradise as a noumenal and inaccessible entity; and paradise created by God for the forefathers, half heavenly and ethereal in nature. Vasily Kalika, the author of the Epistle about Paradise, was a supporter of the concept of paradise located on an island in a distant sea. Kalika’s argument was based on data from church sources, apocrypha, and “eyewitness’” evidence. The archbishop considered literary and folklore stories about journeys to the earthly paradise the most important proof of the existence of an earthly paradise. The author concludes that belief in an earthly paradise in Russia was formed under the influence of Antiochian theology, apocryphal travels to paradise, and folk legends about reaching the edge of the world. Bishop Vasily Kalika and his flock’s religious ideas are a synthesis of Orthodox, apocryphal, and pre-Christian ideas.

Abstract:
ReferênciasMutthineni RB, Dudala RB, Ramisetty A.
