The article deals with the problem of the divine light in the mystical works of St Symeon the New Theologian (949–1022) in the context of the Eastern Christian ascetical tradition. The author focuses on the passages referring to the divine light in the works of Evagrios Pontikos, St Isaac the Syrian, St Maximus the Confessor, and in the Makarian corpus. As is shown in the present contribution, none of these authors created a fully-developed theory of the vision of the divine light. Being close to these writers in many ideas, St Symeon was generally independent of any of them in his treatment o

Saint Symeon is one of the most representative Eastern theologians and mystics. His speech on God and the knowledge of heavenly realities through direct, unmitigated experience would gain him the title of “the New Theologian”, which, until him, had only belonged to Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Gregory of Nazianzus. Therefore, his writings have greatly influenced the Christian East. Saint Symeon has been perceived as a renewer of the tradition of spiritual life and a restorer of the lost or rather neglected spiritual life. In this study, we aim to highlight his experiences in which he pa

A vast majority of the Church Fathers and later East Christian thinkers inclined towards christological interpretation of Sophian images. Adam and Eve in Scripture, Theology, and Literature: Sin, Compassion, and Forgiveness is an extended consideration of the narrative of Adam and Eve, first seen in the Hebrew Bible but given new life by St. Paul in the New Testament. Paul’s treatment of Adam and Eve, especially his designation of Christ as a second Adam, has had an enormous influence in Christianity. Peter Ely follows this rich narrative as it develops in history, providing the basis of the doctrine of original sin in Christianity, giving rise in modern times to theological speculation, and entering thematically into mysticism

Abstract:
Abstract In the life and teaching of Simeon the New Theologian (949-1022), Byzantine ascetical and mystical theology achieved its most intense penetration of the Christian Mystery. Simeon wrote at a time when the Byzantine church was relatively free of dogmatic disputes and doctrinal conflicts. The great Trinitarian and Christological debates of the late patristic era, although a constant source of interest in Byzantine religious life, had long since ceased to divide the "Great Church." Belief had crystallized and hardened into dogmatic definitions and conciliar formulations and an identifiable "Orthodox" identity had emerged in the Byzantine church. In dogmatic theology, the Cappadocian model of the Trinity reigned supreme; in Christology, the Chalcedonian dyophysite understanding of Christ, interpreted in an Alexandrian way, stressed the unity of the two natures in the person of the Incarnate Word.
