Abstract:
In the introduction to Translations of Lucian, More wrote that “of all learned men” Chrysostom was “the most Christian and – at least in [his] opinion – of all Christians the most learned.” It is worth considering how much they were in tune. In 1499 More had access to a new manuscript of Chrysostom’s Commentary on the Gospel of St. Matthew, now in Corpus Christi College. In the first homily Chrysostom gives an overall view of his work and of the teaching of Christ and writes that the apostles brought us a “new principle of life, another manner of living: both in wealth and in poverty, in freedom and in slavery, in life and in death, changing all, our world and our polity. Not like Plato who composed that ridiculous Polis.” That reference to the Republic of Plato is echoed in the Hexastichon of Utopia, Nunc ciuitatis aemula Platonicae / Fortasse uictrix. More deliberately used the word civitas rather than respublica; for in this way he came closer to the word used by Plato and Chrysostom, πολιτεαν. The key theme of that first homily of Chrysostom, addressed to the citizens of Antioch, is that the teaching of Christ is to be practised in the “polis” and in the “agora.” Reference to both the city and market place is to be found also in the letter More addressed to Colet in October 1504. This essay will consider the influence of Chrysostom on More at the time of his writing Utopia.

Abstract:
As a Catholic college federated with the University of Saskatchewan, St. Thomas More College (STM) benefits from the arrangements negotiated at its founding by the Basilian Fathers. When the Basilians withdrew from STM in 2013, the College entered a new relationship with its diocesan bishop, but continues to steward the educational culture created by its founders. Now under lay leadership and with an increasingly diverse community, STM faces the dual challenge of renewing its Catholic identity and remaining a sustainable liberal arts college. In its current College Plan, it lays out a strategy for doing both while also engaging with the national work of Indigenous reconciliation.

Abstract:
The US Virgin Islands (USVI) include St. John and St. Thomas on the Puerto Rican Platform (PRP) and St. Croix, isolated by 2000 m deep water 45 km south of that platform. Previous inventories of the marine fishes of these islands include a comprehensive 2014 checklist of the fishes of St. Croix and a list of the fishes of the PRP produced in 2000. The latter list noted the locations of many records of the plateau’s fishes, allowing the construction of a combined inventory for St. John and St. Thomas. Those two islands are treated here as a single faunal unit because they are only 3.5 km apart on a shared shallow shelf with various islets and reefs in between. Here we provide updated information on those two USVI (St. Croix and St. John-Thomas) marine fish faunas. The additions to the St. Croix and St. John-Thomas inventories presented here are based on a combination of information from the two sources indicated above, more recent publications dealing with those faunas, a review of location records on various online sources of biogeographic data, and voucher photographs taken of fishes in the field by authors of this paper and other citizen scientists. This assessment increased the known fauna of St. Croix by 7.5% to 585 species. The inventory for St. John-Thomas increased by 39.9% from 401 species on the 2000 PRP list to 561 with the inclusion of records from other sources. On-site mtDNA (COI) barcodes are available for approximately one-third of the species of the St. John-Thomas fauna, but for only one species collected at St. Croix. A set of underwater photographs of 372 species (34 of them representing the sole record of a species) from St. John-Thomas and of 11 shallow-water species added to the St. Croix fauna is included. These represent occurrence vouchers and also are intended to facilitate future work that builds on the present compendium.

Thomas Aquinas tried to defend and rationalize Christianity in both of his books; Summa Contra Gentiles and Reasons for the Faith against Muslim Objections. Both books are considered to have been written against Islam and the Muslims. This article, firstly, discusses whether or not St. Thomas Aquinas really knew Islam. It also questions if St. Thomas' apology could be a model for Christian apologies against the Muslims.https://www.marife.org/marife/article/view/344

Abstract:
There are many cardioplegia solutions currently in use for pediatric cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The most common being del Nido solution. Another common cardioplegia solution used for pediatric CPB is St. Thomas. In October 2014, Children's Mercy Kansas City changed from the use of modified St. Thomas to del Nido. This study compared rates of post cross-clamp fibrillation requiring defibrillation between del Nido solution and modified St. Thomas solution stratified by weight at Children's Mercy Kansas City. This retrospective study consisted of 394 patients who underwent cardiac surgery requiring cardioplegia between January 1, 2014 and July 31, 2015. The outcome measured was defibrillation upon cross-clamp removal. Statistical significance was determined using Fishers exact test with a two-sided significance level of .05. Incidence of defibrillation post cross-clamp removal was 4.4% in the del Nido group and 26.8% in the St. Thomas group (p &lt; .0001). Analysis by weight stratifications displays a reduction in post cross-clamp defibrillation rates in groups using the del Nido solution. The 0- to 6-kg category had an incidence of fibrillation of 1.23% in the del Nido group and 17.5% in the St. Thomas group (p &lt; .0003). The 6- to 15-kg category had an incidence of defibrillation of 1.82% in the del Nido group and 14% in the St. Thomas group (p &lt; .0198). The 15- to 60-kg category had an incidence of defibrillation of 8.9% in the del Nido group and 61% in the St. Thomas group (p &lt; .0001). The &gt;60-kg category had an incidence of defibrillation of 16.7% in the del Nido group and 63% in the St. Thomas group (p &lt; .0623). This study demonstrates a 6-fold decrease in the overall rate of defibrillation post cross-clamp removal between St. Thomas and del Nido cardioplegia solutions. Analyses of weight stratifications demonstrate a decrease in the rate of defibrillation post cross-clamp removal in all categories within the del Nido group.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was designed to evaluate whether the addition of potassium channel blockers, tetraethylammonium, 4-aminopyridine or glibenclamide, to St Thomas' cardioplegia improved myocardial preservation over that achieved by St Thomas' cardioplegic solution alone. Initially, isolated rat hearts were subjected to 30 min of continuous normothermic hypoxic cardioplegia. Control hearts were arrested with St Thomas' cardioplegia followed by tetraethylammonium, glibenclamide or 4-aminopyridine-enriched cardioplegia. Subsequently, in a second experiment, hearts were subjected to 45 min of normothermic global ischaemia, after 3 min of cardioplegia with either tetraethylammonium-enriched or standard St Thomas' cardioplegia. In both regimens, hearts arrested with tetraethylammonium-enriched St Thomas' cardioplegia showed better recovery of contractile function than controls ( P&lt;0.001). Creatine kinase levels were significantly lower in the tetraethylammonium group ( P&lt;0,001). 4-Aminopyridine treatment caused similar contractility to that of the control group but raised creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase levels ( P&lt;0.001). Glibenclamide diminished coronary flow autoregulation, and increased lactate dehydrogenase leakage in reperfusion ( P&lt;0.05) with similar contractility to controls. The results of this preliminary in vitro study demonstrate that, in rat heart, St Thomas' cardioplegia enriched with tetraethylammonium improves post-ischaemic contractile function and reduces creatine kinase release. It is concluded that high potassium blocks the membrane at the rapid depolarization phase with rapid sodium influx and tetraethylammonium further prevents repolarization by blocking voltage-dependent potassium channels.

Abstract:
The efficacy of cardioplegia in neonatal myocardial protection is still a matter of debate. 99mTc-sestamibi cellular accumulation reflects sarcolemmal and mitochondrial electrical gradients. It was used to monitor the direct effects of two cardioplegic solutions, modified St Thomas' Hospital and Bretschneider, on normoxic and metabolically-inhibited cultured cells. Cellular accumulation of 99mTc-sestamibi, expressed by the ratio between intra and extra cellular concentrations, was assessed in three different sets of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes. Cells were either treated with different concentrations of modified St Thomas' solution (50, 75, 100%), they were treated or recovering from a treatment with modified St Thomas and Bretschneider solutions at 50% concentrations, or were recovering from treatment with modified St Thomas' and Bretschneider solution at 50% concentrations mixed with metabolic inhibitors. Cardioplegia depressed the tracer accumulation in a concentration-dependent manner. This effect was independent of the type of cardioplegia (120-min uptake, as a percentage of control values, modified St Thomas' 68 ± 12 and Bretschneider 59 ± 7) and was rapidly reversible. Cardioplegia was unable to prevent the depression of tracer accumulation induced by metabolic inhibitors and even induced a deleterious effect (120-min uptake, as a percentage of control values, metabolic inhibitors 69 ± 12, metabolic inhibitors + modified St Thomas 38 ± 14, metabolic inhibitors + Bretschneider 43 ± 6) during recovery after 30 min of metabolic inhibition. It was concluded that cardioplegia has an apparent detrimental effect on neonatal cardiomyocytes accumulation of 99mTc-sestamibi during recovery from an ischaemic-like insult.

Abstract:
Objective: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of traditional St. Thomas II and the next-generation del Nido cardioplegia solutions in minimizing ischemia/reperfusion injury during open heart surgery in a myocardial ischemia/reperfusion model created in rats. Methods: In this experimental study, 24 Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups: the sham group (normal saline), the St. Thomas II group, and the del Nido group. Cardioplegia was induced, and heart tissues were collected for histopathological analysis after 90 min. The number of macrophages was counted to assess inflammation. Results: The mean macrophage count in ischemic tissues was similar across the sham, St. Thomas II, and del Nido groups. In tissues with reperfusion injury, the control group had fewer macrophages compared to the St. Thomas II and del Nido groups, but the difference between the two solutions was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Both St. Thomas II and del Nido solutions were more effective than the control in preventing reperfusion injury. However, no significant difference was observed between the two cardioplegia solutions, possibly due to the short ischemia/reperfusion duration and the resilient nature of rat myocardium.

The event, promoted by the Thomistic Institute and the International Society of St. Thomas Aquinas (SITA), aimed to foster dialogue between Pontifical and Italian civil universities. The initiative highlights a shared search for truth “in dulcedine societatis,” emphasizing thinking with Aquinas rather than merely about him. The contributions reflect the living relevance of Thomistic thought in contemporary philosophical and theological inquiry, through contemplation, explanation, and interpretation.

Abstract:
Abstract From 1816 to the 1830s, the islands of St. Eustatius, Saba, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, and St. Barts were actively engaged with illicit trade in ships, prize goods, and the transatlantic slave trade. Ships’ crews, governors, and merchants took advantage of the islands’ physical, political, and legal environments to effectively launder goods, ships, and people that were actively involved in these activities. St. Thomas stands out due to the longevity of its status as a regional and international hub for illicit trade at the end of Atlantic and Caribbean privateering and piracy. Within this social and political environment, this paper will unveil the tensions between international, regional, and local interests that drove merchants and colonial officials on St. Thomas to engage with illegal transatlantic slave traders, privateers, and pirates, during the early nineteenth century. Secondly, this paper will reveal the processes through which these relations occurred.

Abstract:
Abstract: The results of archival and collection research into the expedition led by Nicolas-Thomas Baudin in 1796–1798 to Tenerife, St. Thomas, St. Croix, and Puerto Rico are herein presented. The expedition brought home at least 296 specimens and was the first to collect in St. Thomas, St. Croix, and Puerto Rico. Of these, at least 140 specimens still survive, the largest single-voyage collection from pre-1800 still available. Accounts of these specimens and those known to have vanished are presented here for the first time, adding to our knowledge of early Caribbean ornithology. The arguments of David K. Wetherbee (1985, 1986) that thefts by the Baudin expedition took place during a foray into Hispaniola are all shown to be suspect. Molecular and morphological work identified a Barn Owl (Tyto alba ssp) supposedly collected in Puerto Rico, thus providing the first possible documentation of the Barn Owl in Puerto Rico, but its exact taxonomic status remains unresolved.

Abstract:
In the article, the author seeks an answer to the question why a fundamental theologian should read St. Thomas Aquinas. To this end, he draws on the thoughts of Leszek Kołakowski, Joseph Ratzinger/Benedykt XVI, Robert Barron and Jacek Salij. Based on their writings, he builds arguments. The answer to the title question is rhetorical. There is no doubt that the modern theologian should read St. Thomas Aquinas. In his thought, he first finds the natural correspondence existing between the Christian faith and reason. Showing their specificity and mutual reference, defining the limits of cognition and the possibilities of human nature, is what characterizes St. Thomas. The researchers cited in the text pay special attention to this aspect of Aquinas&rsquo; thought. Defense of reason in the thought of St. Thomas is very clear. In defending rationality, the Dominican sees it as a constitutive element of human identity, which fundamentally shapes a human being.

Abstract:
In 2022, a comprehensive, curated, updated list of the marine fish fauna of the US Virgin Islands drew on existing published sources of information, museum records available from online databases of various museums, mtDNA-barcode sequences available from GenBank and BOLD, new collections of specimens, and an extensive set of underwater photographs of fishes from St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas. Robertson et al. (2022a) documented&nbsp; 561 species from St. John and St. Thomas, which are only 3.5 km apart on the eastward extension of the shallow Puerto Rican shelf, and 585 species from St. Croix, which is isolated from the other two islands by 45 km of deep water. Since the 2022 inventory, some of the authors have continued to collect data on reef fishes in the area and here we report on the addition of 18 species of reef-associated fishes and one non-reef species (and also one subtraction) to the marine fauna of St. John and St. Thomas and three reef-associated species to the fauna of St. Croix, raising the totals to 579 and 588 species respectively.

Abstract:
Background: Temporary cardiac arrest using cardioplegia is a critical step during coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery to protect the heart from ischemia. Due to limited availability, Dr. Soetomo Hospital in Surabaya developed an alternative mixture to replace the standard St. Thomas cardioplegia. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of St. Thomas and Dr. Soetomo Hospital cardioplegia in CABG surgery in terms of achieving cardioplegic arrest, plasma potassium balance, and preventing arrhythmias. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted among adult patients undergoing CABG who were administered either St. Thomas or Dr. Soetomo Hospital cardioplegia during November 2019 and May 2020. The time to achieve cardioplegic arrest, plasma potassium levels, and ventricular fibrillation or tachycardia incidence were recorded and analyzed. Results: Out of 74 patients, 37 each received St. Thomas cardioplegia and Dr. Soetomo Hospital cardioplegia, with no significant differences in demographic characteristics between the two groups (p&gt;0.05). The results revealed that both types of cardioplegia were equally effective in maintaining plasma potassium balance and preventing life-threatening arrhythmias. However, Dr. Soetomo Hospital cardioplegia achieved cardioplegic arrest significantly (p&lt;0.05) faster than St. Thomas cardioplegia. Conclusion: Dr. Soetomo Hospital’s cardioplegia demonstrated increased efficacy in achieving faster cardiac arrest, which has significant implications for optimizing surgical efficiency and reducing myocardial damage during CABG.

Abstract:
Background. Single-dose cardioplegia is preferred in minimal invasive mitral valve surgery to maintain the adjustment of the operative site without change of preset visualization. The aim of our study was to compare two widely used crystalloid cardioplegias Bretschneider (Custodiol®) versus St. Thomas 2 in patients who underwent mitral valve repair via small anterolateral right thoracotomy. Material and Methods. From May 2012 until February 2019, 184 isolated mitral valve procedures for mitral valve repair via anterolateral right thoracotomy were performed using Bretschneider (Custodiol®) cardioplegia (n=123) or St. Thomas (n=61). Primary efficacy endpoint was peak postoperative high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTnT) during hospitalization. Secondary endpoints were peak creatine kinase-muscle brain type (CK-MB) and creatine kinase (CK) as well as safety outcomes. We used inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) in order to adjust for confounding by indication. Results. Peak hs-cTnT was higher after use of Bretschneider (Custodiol®) (geometric mean 716 mg/L, 95% confidence interval (CI) 605-847 mg/L) vs. St. Thomas 2 (561 mg/L, CI 467-674 mg/L, p=0.047). Peak CK-MB (geometric mean after Bretschneider (Custodiol®): 40 μg/L, CI 35-46, St. Thomas 2: 33 μg/L, CI 27-41, p=0.295) and CK (geometric mean after Bretschneider (Custodiol®): 1370 U/L, CI 1222-1536, St. Thomas 2: 1152 U/L, CI 972-1366, p=0.037) showed the same pattern. We did not see any difference with respect to postoperative complications between treatment groups after IPTW. Conclusion. Use of St. Thomas 2 cardioplegia was associated with lower postoperative peak levels of all cardiac markers that reflect cardiac ischemia such as hs-cTnT, CK, and CK-MB as compared to Bretschneider (Custodiol®) in propensity-weighted treatment groups.

Abstract:
We can find the Mariological texts of St Thomas Aquinas in only a few of his works. Nonetheless, in his teaching he focused on Mariological issues of importance to theology. This article aimed to present Aquinas’ theology on the question of the fullness of grace in the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the first part of this article, in addition to the general historical context, the basic content on Aquinas’ theology of grace is introduced. In the following chapters, the author of the article, based on the teaching of St Thomas, sought to present the effects produced by the presence of full grace in the life of Mary, followed by a discussion of its three forms, which St Thomas related to the stages of the life of the Mother of Jesus. In summary, firmly grounded in Christoligy, St Thomas’ Mariology links the truth of Mary’s ‘full grace’ to the literal presence of Christ in her womb. Consequently, Aquinas regards the Incarnation of Christ as the sole source of the graces received by the Mother of Jesus.

Abstract:
Two white ethnic minorities, Jews and Frenchies, are rather unusual in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. The Jews arrived during the period of slavery and participated in the economic colonialism of islands, retaining a prominent position in the Virgin Islands. The Frenchies in St. Thomas arrived from St. Barths after slavery. These white minorities have expanded connections between friends and families as well as in their departed homeland and the Virgin Islands. Their strong religious beliefs and in-group solidarity allowed them to remain in the sociological and economic comfort zones of St. Thomas. In modern times, they have branched out from their insular zones and merged their mores and folkways and their peasant and professional ways, on their gradual terms, with those of other ethnic Virgin Islanders, bringing themselves closer to Virgin Islands society as evidenced by their younger generation.

Abstract:
Background and Aims: Cardioplegia is used to arrest the heart after the application of an aortic cross-clamp that interrupts the coronary circulation. Commonly used St. Thomas’II cardioplegic solution has to be repeated at short intervals, which may cause additional myocardial injury. So, this study is done to determine whether del Nido (DN) cardioplegia, which has a longer duration of arrest with a single dose, provides equivalent or better myocardial protection as compared to St. Thomas’ II Cardioplegia.&#x0D; Methods: A prospective observational study was done among 100 patients who underwent open-heart surgery with myocardial protection, between September 2016 to August 2018 in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Bangladesh. Patients were divided into two groups, group A (n=50) for del Nido cardioplegic and group B (n=50) for St. Thomas’ II cardioplegia. We compared the amount of cardioplegic solution, Aortic cross-clamp time, cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) time, ischemic time, arrhythmia, spontaneous sinus rhythm after declamping, intraoperative DC shock requirement, postoperative left ventricular ejection fraction, serum potassium level, low cardiac output, cardiac Troponin level I and CK-MB release after 12 hours and 24 hours, presence of myocardial infarction and death.&#x0D; Results: The per-operative variable suggested spontaneous activity during a cardiac arrest was 2% in del Nido and 14% in St. Thomas’ II group (p=0.044). Similarly, during intraoperative phase spontaneous restoration of cardiac activity after the procedure in del Nido was 2.90 ± 1.16 minutes and in St. Thomas’ II was 1.8 ± 0.615 minutes (p=0.001). However total bypass time and ischemic time were not significant. During the postoperative period, Troponin I and CKMB were measured at 12 hours and 24 hours which were not statistically different in two groups. Postoperatively, low output syndrome was seen among 3 patients in del Nido Group and 4 patients in St. Thomas’ II group (p-value=0.341).&#x0D; Conclusion: This study showed with the use of del Nido cardioplegia provides equivalent myocardial protection to St. Thomas’ II cardioplegia, with the use of only single-dose cardioplegia.

Abstract:
The presence and relevance of St. Cyprian and his writings in Thomas More's works has only been partially discussed in the available literature. In the present paper I intend to contextualize More's interest for St. Cyprian within the general appreciation that other humanists showed for the Fathers of the Church, and this African Bishop in particular. Thus a close review of More's references to St. Cyprian in his writings is here presented, organized in three blocks: the so-called “humanist letters,” his controversial works—with the exception of The Confutation of Tyndale's Answer (1532–1533)—and the Tower works. In the conclusion I will provide a tentative categorization of the uses More made of this Father of the Church.

Abstract:
Objective Blood cardioplegia, the gold-standard cardioprotective strategy, requires frequent dosing, resulting in hyperkalemia-induced myocardial edema. The aim of our study was to compare the efficacy and safety of a long-acting blood-based cardioplegia with physiological potassium levels versus the well-established cold blood St. Thomas’ Hospital no. 1 cardioplegia solution in multivalve surgeries. Methods One hundred patients undergoing simultaneous elective aortic and mitral valve replacement ± tricuspid valve repair were randomized in two groups. In group 1, adenosine 12 mg was given via the aortic root after crossclamping, followed by a single dose of long-acting solution at 14℃ (30 mLċkg−1); in group 2, an initial 30 mLċkg−1 of St. Thomas’ cardioplegia at 14℃ was administered, followed by 15 mLċkg−1 every 20 min. Duration of cardiopulmonary bypass, inotropic score, arrhythmias, ventilation time, and the levels of interleukin-6, creatinine kinase-MB, and troponin I were compared. Results Mean cardiopulmonary bypass and crossclamp times were 134.04 ± 36.12 vs. 154.34 ± 34.26 ( p = 0.004) and 110.37 ± 24.80 vs. 132.48 ± 31.68 min ( p = 0.002), respectively, in the long-acting and St. Thomas’ groups. Cardiac index, creatinine kinase-MB and troponin I levels were comparable. Interleukin-6 levels post-bypass were 61.72 ± 15.33 and 75.44 ± 31.78 pgċmL−1 ( p = 0.007) in the long-acting and St. Thomas’ cardioplegia groups, respectively. Conclusions Single-dose long-acting cardioplegia gives a cardioprotective effect comparable to repeated doses of the well-established St. Thomas’ Hospital no. 1 cold blood cardioplegia.
