Abstract:

A vast quantity of rare music books and manuscripts were lost during the Second World War, and while a substantial number has been rediscovered, many items remain untraced. In some cases the only information we have about such losses is found in early music catalogues. One library with invaluable information of this kind is the Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek, Hamburg (in 1919 the library's name was changed from ‘Stadtbibliothek’ to ‘Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek’, and in 1983 it acquired its present name ‘Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg Carl von Ossietzky‘). The full extent of the Hamburg Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek's music losses has yet to be revealed in print, and it is in respect of a small component of these losses, namely, its music manuscripts, that I am concerned here.

In a recent article, I surveyed the British music holdings of the Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek, Hamburg, prior to the Second World War; details of which derive from the nineteenth-century manuscript catalogue compiled by Arrey von Dommer (1828–1905)—see ‘The Music Collection of the Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek, Hamburg: A Survey of its British Holdings Prior to the Second World War’, RMA Research Chronicle, 30 (1997), 1–138. In addition, I also discussed the history of the collection and commented on its losses and recoveries. I have recently uncovered further British references, and it is with these that I am concerned here.

Abstract:

The extent of the music holdings of the Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek, Hamburg, has never been revealed in print, and, except for a few recent publications dealing with a select number of its extant sources, there has been little comment about the losses it sustained during the Second World War (in 1919 the library's name was changed from ‘Stadtbibliothek’ to ‘Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek’, and in 1983 it acquired its present name ‘Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg Carl von Ossietzky‘). Prior to its dispersal and partial destruction during the Second World War, the Hamburg library's music collection compared favourably to other great music libraries of the day such as those in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich, and the Bodleian Library, Oxford. That the Hamburg library now possesses only a small quantity of its original holdings is a cause for much lament, but since detailed descriptions survive of all its pre-War materials, musicologists are afforded some remarkable insights into its sources, many of which have escaped scholarly attention; the descriptions are found in a manuscript catalogue compiled by the brilliant nineteenth-century bibliographer Arrey von Dommer (1828–1905). Dommer's catalogue reveals that in the late nineteenth century the Hamburg library possessed an extensive amount of music, both printed and manuscript, and that its collection of British music, though smaller than its holdings of German and Italian music, was very significant—the richness of its British materials reflects the particular interest of the collector Friedrich Chrysander (1826–1901), from whom much of the library's music was obtained.

Abstract:

Die größte Sammlung von eigenhändigen Kompositionsniederschriften Johann Christian Bachs ist kürzlich in die Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg zurückgekehrt. Die 15 Autographe wurden im Zweiten Weltkrieg ausgelagert und wurden dann nach Armenien verbracht. Sie enthalten Kirchenmusik aus der Mailänder Zeit Bachs und verdanken ihre Überlieferung vor allem Emma Jane Greenland, der die Autographe im späten 18. Jahrhundert gehörten. Abstract:

Autor podjął próbę analizy pochodzenia egzemplarza De humani corporis fabrica Andreasa Vesaliusa (Basel 1555) z Biblioteki Wyższego Seminarium Duchownego Metropolii Warmińskiej „Hosianum” w Olsztynie. W toku badań ustalono, że wolumin należał do Johanna Zella (daty życia nieznane) z Kolonii oraz jego syna Heinricha Zella (1518-1564). Heinrich Zell był bibliotekarzem w Bibliotece Zamkowej księcia Albrechta w Królewcu. Książka następnie przeszła do Biblioteki Zamkowej. Od 1827 r. znalazła się w Königliche- und Universitätsbibliothek w Królewcu. Biblioteka ta zmieniała nazwę w 1918 r. na Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Königsberg. Po II wojnie światowej książka znalazła się Bibliotece Seminarium Duchownego w Olsztynie. Egzemplarz zachowany jest w dobrej formie. Oprawiony został w pracowni introligatorskiej Kaspra Anglera w Królewcu ok. 1560 r.

AbstractDie Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg betreibt seit vielen Jahren Provenienzforschung. Zurzeit werden die Sondersammlungen auf NS-Raubgut überprüft, vor allem Erwerbungen aus dem Handel. Eine aktuelle Recherche betrifft die 1938 erworbenen Bücher des Dortmunder Rechtsanwalts Otto Elias, der sich schon kurz nach der NS-Machtübernahme das Leben nahm. Sein Exlibris ist der Anlass, sich mit einer frühen Verfolgungsgeschichte zu beschäftigen und den Weg seiner Bücher in die Bibliothek zu rekonstruieren.

Zusammenfassung In der Hansestadt Hamburg startete 2014/2015 der Senat eine breit angelegte Initiative zur Digitalisierung. Diese betraf auch Kultur, Forschung und Lehre. Zeitnah setzten Aktivitäten ein, die eine übergreifende Open-Access-Strategie zum Ziel hatten. In einem offenen und transparenten Prozess entwickelten Behörde, Hochschulen und die Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg eine übergreifende Open-Access-Strategie, deren Umsetzung im Frühjahr 2018 einsetzte. Die Gegebenheiten des Wissenschaftsstandorts, die Diversität der Institutionen wie auch behördliche Rahmenbedingungen waren dabei Herausforderungen, die es zu meistern galt.

Abstract:

Ein bislang unbekanntes, acht Notenseiten umfassendes Autograph von Johannes Brahms ist in der Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg entdeckt worden. Es ist Teil der bisher nur durch den Druck bekannten Generalbaßaussetzung, die Brahms 1870 für die Edition der <Italienischen Duette> von Georg Friedrich Händel im Rahmen der Händel-Gesamtausgabe angefertigt hatte. Bei dem Vergleich zwischen Brahms' Niederschrift mit der Druckfassung zeigt sich, daß der Herausgeber Friedrich Chrysander einige Eingriffe in den Brahmsschen Notentext vorgenommen hat.

Abstract:

Während der Kriegsjahre 1943/44 verlagerte die Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg ihre Handschriftenbestände überwiegend nach Sachsen, um sie vor Bombenangriffen zu schützen. Nur ein kleiner Teil gelangte nach Kriegsende zurück. Der größte Teil wurde beschlagnahmt und in die Sowjetunion gebracht, wo sich die Spuren verloren. 1989 konnten aus Ost-Berlin, 1990 aus Moskva, 1991 aus Sankt-Peterburg sowie 1998 aus Yerevan rund 90 Prozent des Vorkriegsbestandes an Musikhandschriften (ca. 2400 Bände) wieder nach Hamburg zurückkehren. Unter den aus Armenien zurückgekehrten Musikhandschriften befinden sich Autographe von Johann Christian Bach, Heinrich Marschner, Johann Mattheson, Andreas Romberg und Thomas Selle.

Abstract:

Der fragliche Quellenfund entstammt einem Konvolut mit Gelegenheitsdrucken aus der Regierungszeit Christians von Sachsen-Weißenfels (1712-1736), verwahrt in der Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen. Diese ermöglichen Ergänzungen zum Weißenfelser Aufführungsrepertoire der Bach-Zeit. Nicht belegbar sind Aufführungen von BWV 51, wogegen BWV 210a für den Weißenfelser Hof in Leipzig musiziert wurde. Offen bleibt die Möglichkeit, einige der ohne Nennung des Komponisten gedruckten Libretti könnten von Bach vertont worden und die Musiken heute verschollen sein. Abstract:

This publication represents an edition of a lost copy of the so-called Abstractum-Glossar, an extremely widespread late medieval glossary from Latin to German actually preserved in more than one hundred manuscripts with very variable sets of words. The copy which is edited here is one which was found in Tomsk (Russia), and formerly had been preserved in Hamburg. Diese Publikation bietet eine kritische Edition eines verschollenen sogenannten 'Abstractum-Glossars', ein weit verbreitetes spätmittelalterliches Lateinisch-Deutsches Glossar, von dem mehr als hundert Textzeugen mit unterschiedlichem Wortbestand existieren. Der hier edierte Textzeuge befand sich früher im Besitz der Hamburger Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek und wurde jetzt in Tomsk (Sibirien) wiederentdeckt.

Als einer der Volontäre des ersten Jahrgangs des neu begründeten bibliothekswissenschaftlichen Ausbildungswegs an der Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität und der Preußischen Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin im Studienjahr 1928/1929 gelangte er auf einen Berufsweg, auf dem er zu einem Wegbereiter neuer Entwicklungen wurde. Der Beitrag untersucht, welche Rolle sein engagierter Förderer Aby Warburg sowie Netzwerke und Empfehlungsschreiben von Bibliotheksdirektoren für den Beginn der Bibliothekskarriere Edgar Breitenbachs in der ausgehenden Weimarer Republik spielten. Zur Rekonstruktion der bibliothekarischen Entwicklungen dienen Erinnerungen, Korrespondenzen und Personalakten aus der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, dem Institut für Stadtgeschichte Frankfurt, der Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen, der New York Public Library, der Smithsonian Institution, Archives of American Art, Washington D.C. und dem Warburg Institute London. Am Rande gestreift werden die Karrieren zweier Volontärinnen, Katharina Meyer und Gisela von Busse, die gemeinsam mit Breitenbach 1929 an der Preußischen Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin ihre Prüfung absolvierten.

Die Authentizität von Johann Sebastian Bachs Orgeltrio BWV 587 ist von jeher umstritten. Seit bekannt geworden ist, dass es sich bei diesem Werk um die Übertragung eines Triosonatensatzes von François Couperin handelt, beziehen sich die Zweifel nicht mehr auf den Komponisten, sondern auf den Bearbeiter der kammermusikalischen Vorlage. Ein unverhoffter Quellenfund erlaubt es nun, die Diskussion um das Werk wieder aufzugreifen. Im Musikalienbestand der Sächsischen Landesbibliothek Dresden konnte vor kurzem eine Abschrift der betreffenden Triosonate Couperins ermittelt werden, die von der Hand des Dresdner Konzertmeisters Johann Georg Pisendel stammt. This documentary contains 16 Liszt-letters preserved at the Goethe-Schiller- Archiv (GSA) in Weimar and further 14 items from the Sächsische Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek (SLUB) in Dresden. The Weimar letters include those in which Liszt addressed (in French) Ignaz Moscheles and Julius Benedict, both German musicians living in London, about his 1840 concert tour in England. Also, he wrote in French to singer Pauline Viardot-Garcìa, Madame Érard, and his Neapolitan pupil Luisa Cognetti. His letters in German to Hermann Levi deal with Richard Wagner. In another letter Liszt is asking the Vienna Home Secretary Baron Alexander von Bach, to have his Gran Mass published at the state administration’s expense. His letters to Count Sándor Teleki and Ede Reményi concern Hungarian musical life. Liszt is giving instructions for the publishing of his work Hymne de l’enfant à son réveil to his Hungarian publisher Nándor Táborszky and writing a dry refusal to his former Hungarian pupil Sándor Bertha. The envelope of a letter to Madame Munkácsy has a mistake in the orthography of the family name. The documents from Dresden include an Albumblatt Liszt wrote for Clara Schumann, a recommendation for Heinrich Ehrlich, the composer of the first Lento-theme of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody no 2. Further letters were written to Laura Kahrer (one of them having been published in a slightly altered manner by La Mara) and a series of eight letters to Liszt’s Swiss disciple Bertrand Roth.

Abstract:

Two further unknown sacred vocal compositions by Vivaldi, a Dixit Dominus and a Lauda Jerusalem, have turned up in a collection that has already witnessed two similar discoveries in recent decades: that of the former Saxon Hofkapelle, today in the Sächsische Landesbibliothek / Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden. Like their predecessors, the newly discovered works were acquired between the mid-1750s and early 1760s from the copying shop of Iseppo Baldan in Venice, who falsified the attribution on the title page to make the composer Galuppi instead of Vivaldi. Whereas the Lauda Jerusalem is an arrangement by Vivaldi of an anonymous stile antico setting of the same psalm in his own collection (and in turn the model for his own Credidi propter quod, rv605), the Dixit Dominus, scored for choir, soloists and orchestra, is an entirely original composition of outstanding musical quality that dates from the composer’s late period. This article explores the background to the Hofkapelle’s purchases from Baldan and provides a description of the new compositions, together with several arguments (based on musical concordances, general stylistic features and notational characteristics) for their attribution to Vivaldi.

ABSTRACTAmong the holdings of Hamburg’s Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Carl von Ossietzky is an anonymous fifty-two-page score headed ‘Serenata à 4’, described in the corresponding catalogue entry by its former owner, German musicologist Friedrich Chrysander (1826–1901), as a ‘cantata for the funeral of the English king William III of Orange, 1702’. But both the work’s text and the recent identification of the manuscript as being in the hand of Johann Sigismund Cousser (1660–1727) call for a reassessment of this serenata’s provenance, situating it in either England or Ireland between Cousser’s arrival in London on Christmas Day 1704 and the end of Queen Anne’s reign in 1714. Over the course of the two decades he resided in Ireland, from 4 July 1707 until his death, Cousser was responsible for the composition and musical direction of one ode and more than twenty serenatas, the majority of which were commissioned by the viceregal court at Dublin Castle for state celebrations of the reigning monarch’s birthday. Taking printed librettos, contemporary newspaper reports, Cousser’s own commonplace book and two further surviving manuscript scores as its primary evidence, this study seeks to establish a likely location and occasion for the performance of the ‘William III’ serenata within Dublin’s musical life during the early eighteenth century. In their choice of terminology, compositional style and performance practices, Cousser’s serenatas, which may have incorporated elements of theatrical staging and dancing, reveal his extensive Continental experience, and they can be seen to have functioned in part as an operatic substitute, presumably reflecting the limited financial resources of Dublin high society.

The Sächsische Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden (SLUB), holds one of the world’s largest collections of sacred and secular works by the Italian composer Baldassarre Galuppi, “il Buranello”, whose operatic music was very popular in the mid-1750s with the Saxon elector and Polish king August III and other members of his court. This impressive collection of Galuppiana includes numerous copies of liturgical works from the copying house of the Venetian priest and notorius forger Iseppo (Giuseppe) Baldan. Recently, several compositions falsely attributed to Galuppi by Baldan have turned out to be the works of Antonio Vivaldi, including an excellent setting of Dixit Dominus (RV 807). This article demonstrates that the Galuppi-Baldan manuscripts were sent in several batches from Venice to Warsaw (and not Dresden, as originally thought) during the Seven Years’ War (1756–1763), when August III resided in the Polish capital. The Saxon prime minister count Heinrich von Brühl and his musically gifted daughter Maria Amalia also stayed in Warsaw during this period, as did Brühl’s secretary and musical director Friedrich August von Koenig, who arranged for the purchases from Galuppi and Baldan. The fact that operas were also being sent from Rome to Warsaw during the war shows that the nobility in the Polish capital was up-to-date with all the latest Italian music. Reports of performances of Galuppi’s music in Warsaw is presented through official documents and letters written by Friedrich August de Rossi, secretary of Italian affairs at the Saxon-Polish court. This includes a description of a serenate performed at the fifty-seventh birthday of Brühl in August 1757, and evidence is provided which strongly suggests that the music, the so-called “Endimione” serenate, was specially composed by Galuppi for this occasion. Finally, details of the musical manuscripts being sent from Warsaw to Dresden in 1763 and the cataloguing of the collection is presented, in addition to an account of a previously unknown visit of Galuppi to the Saxon capital in 1765.

Neue Erkenntnisse die zur Tourismusentwicklung benötigt werden entstehen auf Grund des Einblicks in derzeitig vorhandenes Wissen, Dokumente und Daten. Dieselben werden von Universitätsbibliotheken, wissenschaftlichen Institutionen, Dokumentationszentren und Datenbanken gesichert. Dabei ist es ratsam "die gleiche Sprache" zu verwenden, sowohl bei der bibliothekarischen Bearbeitung als auch im Suchvorgang. Thesaurus - als kontrolliertes und dynamisches Wörterbuch einer "solchen Sprache" muss die Vielschichtigkeit des Tourismus wiederspiegeln, da es sich zum gemeinsamen Nenner einer Gruppe verschiedener Wissenschaften, Ordnungen und Tätigkeiten entwickelt, ausgehend von den Methoden und der Terminologie dieser Gruppen, aber sich zugleich in der Entwicklungsphase einer eigenen wissenschaftlichen Paradigma befindet. Einen interdisziplinären und mehrsprachigen Tourismusthesaurus gibt es noch nicht, doch das Institut für Tourismus veranlasst den Beginn seiner Aufbauung. New knowledge necessary for tourism development is based on existing knowledge, documents and data provided by university and research libraries, documentation centers, databases, using the "same language" both while bibliographic processing and search/retrieval. Thesaurus, being a controlled and dynamic vocabulary of such a language, should reflect all the complexity of tourism which has been developing as a common denominator for a set of various sciences, disciplines and activities, starting with their methodology and terminology, but at the same time progressing developing its own scientific paradigm. An interdisciplinary and multilingual thesaurus of tourism still does not exist and the Institute for Tourism starts with a project for its development. Described are basic characteristics of a thesaurus, methods of work (both analytical and syntetic or systematic), external and internal features needed for establishment of its structure. In more detail is described the work done so far, which comprises term collection - key words (both in Croatian and English) which should represent the basic corpus of candidates for descriptors, and which must be "literary warrant", i.e. taken from a source with verified scientific authority.
