Abstract:
This chapter reviews the first year of political activism with particular emphasis on three challenges the Trump presidency and the Resistance pose: to the understanding of social movements; to the American Left; and to the stability of American political institutions. The Resistance extends beyond familiar demonstrations and direct-action efforts to include activism within political institutions. It challenges left and liberal activism to negotiate their relationship with mainstream political institutions. The Trump presidency and Resistance also challenge the flexibility and stability of American institutions to respond to defiance of previously accepted political norms. This chapter concludes by outlining potential different futures.

Abstract:
The LB with enhanced collisions opened the way to the top-down design of LB schemes, with major gains in flexibility and computational efficiency. However, compliance with the second principle was swept under the carpet in the process, with detrimental effects on the numerical stability of the method. It is quite fortunate that, albeit forgotten, the above compliance did not get lost in the top-down procedure. Entropic LB schemes, the object of the present chapter, explain the whys and hows of this nice smile of Lady Luck.

Abstract:
The small joints of the hand are vulnerable to osteoarthritis, usually spontaneous but sometimes following trauma or infection. Nodular arthritis and arthritis in the thumb CMC has a benign natural history and most might get a little stiff but pain usually settles and function is good. Precipitous surgical intervention is inappropriate; time, reassurance, occupational therapy, splints, analgesics, and occasionally steroids should always be tried. The choice of surgical treatment depends on the functional needs of the joint—the little and ring fingers need flexibility for grip whereas the index and thumb require stability for pinch. Options include fusion (e.g. thumb metacarpophalangeal joint), excision arthroplasty (e.g. thumb base) and joint replacement (e.g. finger metacarpophalangeal joint)

Abstract:
Processes of disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) seek to improve the security and stability of post-conflict societies. This chapter explores a gender-focused approach to DDR that has three primary components: conducting gender analyses of standards of support for women in DDR programs; prioritizing parallel programs for women; and demilitarizing masculinity and femininity. Historical difficulties in establishing DDR programs that respond to the needs of women are explained by four challenges: exclusion of women due to restrictive definitions of “combatants”; programming that does not reflect the specific experiences of women; a reluctance to look beyond traditional DDR programs toward alternates; and a failure to address the militarized masculinities of male combatants. The chapter concludes by suggesting that DDR programs move toward a “portfolio view.” This would allow participants greater flexibility to choose the programming that best meets their needs by providing participants a menu of options.

Abstract:
Much of the literature has examined how dialectical thinking influences the self, emotions, and well-being. How does dialectical thinking affect valenced evaluations of objects outside of the self? This chapter argues that naive dialecticism shapes the internal consistency, cross-situational consistency, and temporal stability of attitudes and related constructs. It begins with a discussion of how dialecticism leads to greater attitudinal ambivalence or “both-valenced” (positive/negative) evaluations of a wide variety of phenomena. It then examines how dialecticism can explain the cultural variation in ingroup favoring versus ingroup derogating tendencies. The difference between cognitive versus affective components and implicit versus explicit levels emerge as important distinctions in elucidating cultural variation in group-based attitudes. The chapter continues with a discussion of how dialecticism can account for cultural differences in cognitive dissonance, intergroup attitudes and relations, and attitude flexibility and change, and topics for future research are proposed.

Smith, Wendy K., Marianne W. Lewis, Paula Jarzabkowski, and Ann Langley, eds. The Oxford Handbook of Organizational Paradox. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198754428.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Organizations are rife with paradoxes. Contradictory and interdependent tensions emerge from and within multiple levels, including individual interactions, group dynamics, organizational strategies, and the broader institutional context. Examples abound such as those between stability and change, empowerment and alienation, flexibility and control, diversity and inclusion, exploration and exploitation, social and commercial, competition and collaboration, learning and performing. These examples accentuate the distinctions between concepts, positing their potential opposition; either A or B. Yet the social world is pluralistic, and comprises multiple, interwoven tensions, in which the relationship between A and B persists in a dynamic, ever-changing relationship. In the last thirty years, the depth and breadth of paradox studies in organizational theory has grown exponentially, surfacing new insights and applications while challenging foundational ideas, and raising questions around definitions, overlapping lenses, and varied research and managerial approaches. In this book, renowned organizational scholars draw from diverse lenses, theories, and empirics to depict paradox within organizational studies and provide a range of lenses and tools with which to understand and conduct research into such phenomena. In doing so, we hope these chapters re-energize continued insight on organizational paradox, plurality, tensions, and contractions.
