Abstract:
We construct a class of closed time-like curves (CTCs) using a compactified extra dimension u. A nonzero metric element gtu(u) enables particles to travel backwards in global time t. The compactified dimension guarantees that the geodesic curve closes in u. The effective 2D (t and u) nature of the metric ensures that spacetime is flat, therein satisfying all the classical stability conditions as expressed by the energy conditions. Finally, stationarity of the metric guarantees that a particle's energy is conserved. The pathologies that plague many hypothesized metrics admitting CTCs, e.g., an infinite cylinder of matter, a negative energy-distribution, particle acceleration/blue-shifting along the CTC, do not occur within our metric class.

Abstract:
In this thesis we are concerned with the optimal control of jump type Stochastic Differential equations(SDEs), which we utilize to model the incomplete financial market. It is demonstrated how Levy type processes associated to general generators with variable coefficients can be linked to Levy processses with jumps in an abstract setting. Thus providing a useful way to deal with optimization problems where the financial market is being driven by a Levy type process. An application to two portfolio optimization problems will be made, initially set out in the abstract setting. Then with a special interest in modelling with stable-like processes we construct the coefficient of the jump term in the associated jump-type SDE, associated to a polar decomposed Levy measure, we are able to solve these optimization problems concretely.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we present a new existence result for Lévy-type processes. Lévy-type processes behave locally like a Lévy process, but the Lévy triplet may depend on the current position of the process. They can be characterized by their so-called symbol; this is the analogue of the characteristic exponent in the Lévy case. Using a parametrix construction, we prove the existence of Lévy-type processes with a given symbol under weak regularity assumptions on the regularity of the symbol. Applications range from existence results for stable-like processes and mixed processes to uniqueness results for Lévy-driven stochastic differential equations. Moreover, we discuss sufficient conditions for the existence of moments of Lévy-type processes and derive estimates for fractional moments.

Abstract:
碩士
國立交通大學
奈米科技研究所
99
Dry adhesion inspired by gecko‘s feet has attracted much attention because it provides strong, yet reversible attachment against surfaces of varying roughness and orientation. Recently, theoretical and experimental investigations into the field of mimicking gecko adhesives have reported; however, they suffered from some disadvantages due to materials‘ limitation compared with nature material from gecko. In this study, we designed the efficient method of an innovate structure for ideal dry adhesives. A taper anodic alumina oxide mold with a length of 1.3 μm and a diameter of 380 nm was fabricated using decoupling two-step hard-anodization process which was firstly reported by us. After molding, taper-shaped nanohair array with slanted angle was presented. The approach to fabricate angled taper nanohair arrays obtained an excellent directional, reusable, and water cleanable use in large area. The angled taper nanohair facilitated the stability and self-cleaning properties compared with pillar nanohairs. A remarkably directional force exhibited by angled taper nanohair arrays was showing here with strong shear attachment ( ~8 N/cm2) in the gripping v direction and easy releasing( ~1.4 N/cm2) in the reverse direction (pulled against the angled direction of hairs). The smart adhesive presented here would enable the climbing robots, cleaning transport system such as LCD factory and non-residue sticker for future generation. We believe such a novel structure which is a low-cost, brilliant adhesion; highly stable and even self-cleaning is integral and promising for the future using.

Abstract:

In this thesis we study two different types of self-interacting random walks. First, we study excited random walk in a deterministic, identically-piled cookie environment under the constraint that the total drift contained in the cookies at each site is finite. We show that the walk is recurrent when this parameter is between -1 and 1 and transient when it is less than -1 or greater than 1. In the critical case, we show that the walk is recurrent under a mild assumption on the environment. We also construct an environment where the total drift per site is 1 but in which the walk is transient. This behavior was not present in previously-studied excited random walk models.

Second, we study the "have your cookie and eat it'' random walk proposed by Pinsky, who already proved criteria for determining when the walk is recurrent or transient and when it is ballistic. We establish limiting distributions for both the hitting times and position of the walk in the transient regime which, depending on the environment, can be either stable or Gaussian.

Abstract:
Policies intended to bring stability to fragile states tend to focus almost exclusively on building institutions and systems to get governance right. Simply building the state is often seen as sufficient for making it stable and legitimate. But policies like these, René Grotenhuis shows in this book, ignore the question of what makes people belong to a nation-state, arguing that issues of identity, culture, and religion are crucial to creating the sense of belonging and social cohesion that a stable nation-state requires.

Abstract:
Power struggles involving the ambiguous status of enslaved persons in leadership roles were endemic to first- and second-century religious practices within Ephesian groups, including early Christian groups. Indeed, these power struggles illustrate a fundamental problem in the study of slavery both ancient and contemporary: stable definitions of slavery are often declared in service to reifying kyriarchal leadership and power. Early Christian communities, like communities today, are not immune to this problem despite declarations of equality within them. Future scholarship as well as the contemporary religious communities need to reckon with the challenge to configure power differently from enslaved, kyriarchal logics.

Abstract:
Celestial mechanics abounds in interesting and counter-intuitive phenomena, such as descriptions of mass transfer between stars or optimal placements of satellites within the Solar System. Remarkably, many such features are already present in the restricted three-body problem, whose assumptions still allow for analytical understanding, and to which the second chapter is devoted. This ‘simplified’ system is discussed first in terms of forces (both gravitational and fictitious), and then using the Hamiltonian form. As well as traditional topics like stable and unstable Lagrange points and Roche lobes, a brief introduction to chaotic orbits is given. Additionally, readers are guided towards exploring on their own with numerical orbit integration.

This final topic of the book extends the ideas of dynamics in abstract spaces of high dimension to encompass the idea of a trajectory of life. Health and disease become dynamical systems defined by all the proteins and nucleic acids that comprise the physical self. Concepts from network theory, autonomous oscillators and synchronization contribute to this viewpoint. Healthy trajectories are like stable limit cycles in phase space, but disease can knock the system trajectory into dangerous regions of health space, as doctors turn to new developments in personalized medicine try to return the individual to a healthy path. This is the ultimate generalization of Galileo’s simple parabolic trajectory.

Abstract:
The twenty-first century is being touted as the Asian century. With its stable economy, good governance, education system, and above all the abundant natural resources, will Australia to take its place in the global economy by becoming more entrepreneurial and accelerating its rate of growth, or will it get infected with the so-called Dutch disease? It has been successful in managing trade ties with fast-developing economies like China and India as well as developed countries like the United States. It has participated in the growth of China by providing iron ore and coal. Because it is a low-risk country, it has enabled inflow of large foreign capital investments. A lot will depend on its capability and willingness to invest the capital available in entrepreneurial ventures, its ability to capture the full value chain of natural resources, and to export the finished products instead of raw materials, while building a robust manufacturing sector.

Full text
Abstract:
Game theory in biology seeks to predict social behaviour and other traits that influence how individuals interact. It does this by tentatively assuming that current traits are stable endpoints of evolution by natural selection. The theory is used to model aggressive behaviour, cooperation, negotiation, and signalling, as well as phenotypic attributes like an individual’s sex and mating type. This book covers the basic concepts and the traditional examples of biological game theory. It expands the frontiers of the field, emphasizing the importance of the co-evolution of traits and the implications of variation for reputation, markets, negotiation, and other social phenomena. It also highlights that it can be important to embed game interactions in the environment and an individual’s life. A major new direction developed in the book is that game theory can be extended by incorporating behavioural mechanisms, including mechanisms of reinforcement learning. By doing this the theory can successfully describe important phenomena like social dominance in group-living animals that previously have been difficult to model. By focusing on behavioural mechanisms, game theory can also make closer contact with empirical observation and with current research in fields like animal psychology and neuroscience.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper estimates the output cost of fighting inflation—the sacrifice ratio—for the South African economy using quarterly data spanning the period 1998Q1–2019Q3. To compute the sacrifice ratio, the structural vector autoregressive model developed by Cecchetti and Rich (2001) based on Cecchetti (1994) is employed. Our findings show us a small sacrifice ratio, which lies within the range 0.00002–0.231 per cent with an average of 0.031 per cent, indicating a low level of output to be sacrificed while fighting inflation. Hence, the reserve bank is recommended to sustain an inflation rate within the target range and reap the benefits of a predictable and stable price path, as restrictive monetary policy has only a transitory effect on real variables like output.

Abstract:
Why does Germany perceive itself as a victim, even though it has dominated and defined European politics so strongly? Why does Germany feel so uncomfortable in its role as a de facto hegemon? As the largest country and the one with the strongest and largest economy in Europe and a stable political system, Germany’s power and influence have grown. Yet hardly anyone in Germany feels comfortable in this role, for it brings with it more responsibility for Europe as a whole. Europe is standing at the crossroads. What will Europe’s future look like? And what role does Germany have to play in it? These are some of the decisive questions that have been discussed in every country and especially in Berlin. If one thing is certain, it is that Germany’s role will be decisive for shaping Europe’s future.

Abstract:
AbstractDue to the additional design freedom and manufacturing possibilities of additive manufacturing compared to traditional manufacturing, topology optimization via mathematical optimization gained importance in the initial design of complex high-strength lattice structures. We consider robust topology optimization of truss-like space structures with multiple loading scenarios. A typical dimensioning method is to identify and examine a suspected worst-case scenario using experience and component-specific information and to incorporate a factor of safety to hedge against uncertainty. We present a quantified programming model that allows us to specify expected scenarios without having explicit knowledge about worst-case scenarios, as the resulting optimal structure must withstand all specified scenarios individually. This leads to less human misconduct, higher efficiency and, thus, to cost and time savings in the design process. We present three-dimensional space trusses with minimal volume that are stable for up to 100 loading scenarios. Additionally, the effect of demanding a symmetric structure and explicitly limiting the diameter of truss members in the model is discussed.

Abstract:
The nature of water films adsorbed on mica surface in humid environment was studied in this paper. Thickness and water insolubility of the films were investigated by surface force apparatus (SFA) and a stable island-like structure was found when the insoluble part of the films meet La3+ ion. Compared with non-SFA type (e.g. scanning tunneling micro-scope and atomic force microscopy) experiments, SFA has unique advantages in measuring the physical properties of the films. Formation conditions, morphology, composition, water-solubility of the structure were discussed with the help of SFA. It is found that the structure demonstrates different patterns in lower pH values. A prediction model of the structure was proposed to explain these results.

In particular, the main argumentation of Roberto de Mattei’s work «Dictatorship of Relativism» is analyzed. Like Ratzinger, the Italian publicist describes modern life as ruled by a dictatorship of relativism which does not recognize anything as definitive and whose ultimate goal consists solely of satisfying «the desires of one’s own ego». In his view, the boundaries of the main conflict of modernity lie between two visions of the world: one that believes in the existence of immutable, absolute values, and one that argues that there is nothing stable, that everything is conditional, time-dependent and can be discussed in the media. The markers of this conflict are our attitude to the famous statement of Protagoras about «man as a measure of all things: of the things that are, that they are, of the things that are not, that they are not», as well as to the non-debatable values, the status of natural and positive law, the worldview neutrality, the dehierarchization and multiplicity of truths, the equalization of all worldviews and axiological standpoint in foreign and Ukrainian media. A special attention in the article is paid to the ideological program of media-relativism, as well as to the postmodern and post-communist contexts of the issue of the penetration of relativism into the journalistic values.

Abstract:
This study is the latest in a series monitoring the evolution of poverty, based on data gathered by The ESRI in the Living in Ireland Surveys since 1994. These have allowed progress towards achieving the targets set out in the National Anti Poverty Strategy since 1997 to be assessed. The present study provides an updated picture using results from the 2000 round of the Living in Ireland survey. The numbers interviewed in the 2000 Living in Ireland survey were enhanced substantially, to compensate for attrition in the panel survey since it commenced in 1994. Individual interviews were conducted with 8,056 respondents. Relative income poverty lines do not on their own provide a satisfactory measure of exclusion due to lack of resources, but do nonetheless produce important key indicators of medium to long-term background trends. The numbers falling below relative income poverty lines were most often higher in 2000 than in 1997 or 1994. The income gap for those falling below these thresholds also increased. By contrast, the percentage of persons falling below income lines indexed only to prices (rather than average income) since 1994 or 1997 fell sharply, reflecting the pronounced real income growth throughout the distribution between then and 2000. This contrast points to the fundamental factors at work over this highly unusual period: unemployment fell very sharply and substantial real income growth was seen throughout the distribution, including social welfare payments, but these lagged behind income from work and property so social welfare recipients were more likely to fall below thresholds linked to average income. The study shows an increasing probability of falling below key relative income thresholds for single person households, those affected by illness or disability, and for those who are aged 65 or over - many of whom rely on social welfare support. Those in households where the reference person is unemployed still face a relatively high risk of falling below the income thresholds but continue to decline as a proportion of all those below the lines. Women face a higher risk of falling below those lines than men, but this gap was marked among the elderly. The study shows a marked decline in deprivation levels across different household types. As a result consistent poverty, that is the numbers both below relative income poverty lines and experiencing basic deprivation, also declined sharply. Those living in households comprising one adult with children continue to face a particularly high risk of consistent poverty, followed by those in families with two adults and four or more children. The percentage of adults in households below 70 per cent of median income and experiencing basic deprivation was seen to have fallen from 9 per cent in 1997 to about 4 per cent, while the percentage of children in such households fell from 15 per cent to 8 per cent. Women aged 65 or over faced a significantly higher risk of consistent poverty than men of that age. Up to 2000, the set of eight basic deprivation items included in the measure of consistent poverty were unchanged, so it was important to assess whether they were still capturing what would be widely seen as generalised deprivation. Factor analysis suggested that the structuring of deprivation items into the different dimensions has remained remarkably stable over time. Combining low income with the original set of basic deprivation indicators did still appear to identify a set of households experiencing generalised deprivation as a result of prolonged constraints in terms of command over resources, and distinguished from those experiencing other types of deprivation. However, on its own this does not tell the whole story - like purely relative income measures - nor does it necessarily remain the most appropriate set of indicators looking forward. Finally, it is argued that it would now be appropriate to expand the range of monitoring tools to include alternative poverty measures incorporating income and deprivation. Levels of deprivation for some of the items included in the original basic set were so low by 2000 that further progress will be difficult to capture empirically. This represents a remarkable achievement in a short space of time, but poverty is invariably reconstituted in terms of new and emerging social needs in a context of higher societal living standards and expectations. An alternative set of basic deprivation indicators and measure of consistent poverty is presented, which would be more likely to capture key trends over the next number of years. This has implications for the approach adopted in monitoring the National Anti-Poverty Strategy. Monitoring over the period to 2007 should take a broader focus than the consistent poverty measure as constructed to date, with attention also paid to both relative income and to consistent poverty with the amended set of indicators identified here.
