Abstract:
The Kirchhoff‐type prestack depth migration operator is a diffraction stack of seismic reflection energies over seismic traces. Typically, the diffraction stack is carried out over the full data aperture, producing not only images of reflectors but also aliasing artifacts. Aliasing artifacts often break reflector continuity in images. The stationary‐phase approximation to the migration operator shows that, for image points on reflectors, traces within the neighborhood of specular rays contribute most to the diffraction stack. Traces outside this vicinity introduce aliasing artifacts into the i

In water deeper than about 300 m, common midpoint stack is moderately effective at suppressing multiple reflections. The stacking process acts as a low‐pass multiple filter, rejecting, to some extent, frequencies greater than the reciprocal of the multiple’s residual moveout on the farthest offset trace. A weighted stack can often be even more effective at attenuating multiples, if the weights are chosen such that the multiple filter response has low amplitudes at those frequencies where the multiple is strong. A least‐squares technique is developed to determine optimum weights, based on the m

The nonlinear correlation technique has been used to guide a seismic trace interpolant to fill gaps in seismic surveys, replace noisy traces, and produce evenly spaced arrays. Given an initial alignment (NMO correction for prestack data and manually inserted correlation lines for post‐stack data), the correlation aligns corresponding features between adjacent seismic traces and quantifies the traveltime difference between the traces on a point‐for‐point basis. The use of the complex trace, although beneficial for time-delay estimates in the presence of frequency-independent phase shifts, reduces the estimation accuracy in poor S/N conditions. I com

When a common‐midpoint gather is collected above a dipping reflector, the point at which reflection occurs moves updip as the source‐receiver offset increases. Stacking velocity is constant, but it is a function of dip. Hence a stacked trace is not equivalent to a zero‐offset recorded trace. Dip moveout (DMO) is a processing step which converts traces to the equivalent of true zero‐offset records, making migration after stack (MAS) equivalent to migration before stack (MBS). The theory of velocity‐independent Gardner DMO is extended to triaxially elliptically anisotropic media in this paper. I

The corporate management view is that stock splits add value by placing the stock in a more liquid price range. Other findings are that (1) an unexplained, sustained jump in returns' variance occurs at the split, and (2) there appears to be a coincidental decrease in liquidity, not an increase.
