Surdam, David George. The NBA Becomes “Major League”. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252037139.003.0008.

Abstract:
This concluding chapter summarizes the NBA's troubled history and its eventual prosperity. It discusses how a series of events and decisions helped improve the league's prospects. The BAA/NBA struggled with many things in its first decade, from concerns over stadium capacities to lack of consumer demands for pro basketball games to racial integration and the rise of technology. Yet the owners' decisions to absorb NBL teams, ruthlessly pare weak teams, tamper with playing rules, introduce African American players, relocate to larger cities, and develop a relationship with television all proved beneficial, although sometimes with a lag. The league's survival, frequently precarious, was a testimony to a group of owners' determination and their willingness to absorb losses.

Rapp, Geoffrey. Sports and American Tort Law. Edited by Michael A. McCann. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190465957.013.7.

Abstract:
The intersection of American tort law and the sports industry has produced some interesting and distinctive jurisprudence. Tort rules are, at times, applied in peculiar ways to the sports industry (and to recreational sports). Some of these are well known to most law students—for instance, the “baseball rule” which, at least for most of the twentieth century, appeared to immunize stadiums and teams from liability for injuries caused by batted balls. Other applications may be surprising even for those trained in law—for instance, a court’s discussion of whether potato sack racing is a contact sport. This chapter explores the ways in which tort law has been applied to sports cases, and at times, adjusted to suit the distinctive features of injuries connected to sports.

Richardson, John, Claudia Gorbman, and Carol Vernallis, eds. The Oxford Handbook of New Audiovisual Aesthetics. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199733866.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume offers new ways to read the audiovisual. In the media landscapes of today, conglomerates jockey for primacy and the Internet increasingly places media in the hands of individuals-producing the range of phenomena from movie blockbuster to YouTube aesthetics. Media forms and genres are proliferating and interpenetrating, from movies, music, and other entertainments streaming on computers and iPods to video games and wireless phones. The audiovisual environment of everyday life, too-from street to stadium to classroom-would at times be hardly recognizable to the mid-twentieth-century subject. The Oxford Handbook of New Audiovisual Aesthetics provides powerful ways to understand these changes. Earlier approaches tended to consider sound and music as secondary to image and narrative. These remained popular even as practices from theater, cinema, and television migrated across media. However, the traversal, or “remediation,” from one medium to another has also provided practitioners and audiences the chance to rewrite the rules of the audiovisual contract. Whether viewed from the vantage of televised mainstream culture, the Hollywood film industry, the cinematic avant-garde, or the participatory discourses of “cyberspace,” audiovisual expression has changed dramatically. The book provides a definitive cross-section of current ways of thinking about sound and image. Its authors-leading scholars and promising younger ones, audiovisual practitioners and nonacademic writers (both mainstream and independent)-open the discussion on audiovisual aesthetics in new directions. Our contributors come from fields including film, visual arts, new media, cultural theory, and sound and music studies, and they draw variously from economic, political, institutional, psychoanalytic, genre-based, auteurist, internationalist, reception-focused, technological, and cultural approaches to questions concerning today’s sound and image. All consider the aural dimension, and what Michel Chion calls “audio-vision:” the sensory and semiotic result of sound placed with vision, an encounter greater than their sum.

LeBaron, Genevieve, ed. Researching Forced Labour in the Global Economy. British Academy, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5871/bacad/9780197266472.001.0001.

Abstract:
By most accounts, forced labour, human trafficking, and modern slavery are thriving in the global economy. Recent media reports — including the discovery of widespread trafficking in Thailand's shrimp industry, forced labour in global tea and cocoa supply chains, and the devastating deaths of workers constructing stadiums for Qatar's World Cup— have brought once hidden exploitation into the mainstream spotlight. As public concern about forced labour has escalated, governments around the world have begun to enact legislation to combat it in global production. Yet, in spite of soaring media and policy attention, reliable research on the business of forced labour remains difficult to come by. Forced labour is notoriously challenging to investigate, given that it is illegal, and powerful corporations and governments are reluctant to grant academics access to their workers and supply chains. Given the risk associated with researching the business of forced labour, until very recently, few scholars even attempted to collect hard or systematic data. Instead, academics have often had little choice but to rely on poor quality second-hand data, frequently generated by activists and businesses with vested interests in portraying the problem in a certain light. As a result, the evidence base on contemporary forced labour is both dangerously thin and riddled with bias. Researching Forced Labour in the Global Economy gathers an interdisciplinary group of leading scholars to tackle this problem. It provides the first, comprehensive scholarly account of forced labour's role in the contemporary global economy and reflections on the methodologies used to generate this research.
