Abstract:
This dissertation examines the role of stage properties-props, slangily-in the construction and expression of characters' identities. Through readings of both canonical and non-canonical drama written between 1600 and 1707-for example, Thomas Middleton's The Revenger's Tragedy (1607), Edward Ravenscroft's adaptation of Titus Andronicus (1678), Aphra Behn's The Rover (1677), and William Wycherley's The Plain Dealer (1677)-I demonstrate how props mediate relationships between people. The control of a character's props often accords a person control of the character to whom the props belong. Props consequently make visual the relationships of power and subjugation that exist among characters. The severed body parts, bodies, miniature portraits, and containers of these plays are the mechanisms by which characters attempt to differentiate themselves from others. The characters deploy objects as proof of their identities-for example, when the women in Behn's Rover circulate miniatures of themselves-yet other characters must also interpret these objects. The props, and therefore the characters' identities, are at all times vulnerable to misinterpretation. Much as the props' meanings are often disputed, so too are characters' private identities often at odds with their public personae. The boundaries of selfhood that the characters wish to protect are made vulnerable by the objects that they use to shore up those boundaries. When read in relation to the characters who move them, props reveal the negotiated process of individuation. In doing so, they emphasize the correlation between extrinsic and intrinsic worth. They are a measure of how well characters perform gender and class rolls, thereby demonstrating the importance of external signifiers in the legitimation of England's subjects, even as they expose "legitimacy" as a social construction.

The State Banks were always cause of instability and imbalances in the National Financial System (SFN). Many adjustment programs were tried throughout the years, but they either only solved the immediate liquidity problems of that institutions or intervened on it without a effective plan of financial consolidation or extinction. This dissertation makesan analysis of the trajectory of the states financial institution from Natonal Financial Sytem's reform, in 1964, until the most recent restructuring program, The Program of Reduction of the State Public Sector Participation in a Bank Activity (PROES). Initially it describes the evolution of the State Banks and their role in the State Financial System (SFE). Then, it describes the main events that marked the implementation of the PROES. Finally, an empirical analysis is made of the eficiency gains generated by the PROES with a comparison of the banks situation before and after the introuction of th program. Such analysis is conducted both by unidimensional accouting measures and by multi-dimenional index obtained through the use of the econometric techniques.

Abstract:
The sculptural environments I create immerse the viewer in a decrepit vaudevillian past. The sculptures allude to narratives within Community Theater as well as the Drag Show. Making becomes an act; manipulating materials such as synthetic hair and paint are associated with the guise of the makeup artist. Frantic rehearsal logic prevails as a dress is repurposed into a male giant's costume and window blinds are used to construct a boat's deck. This collusion asks the viewer to transgress the boundary of the stage, becoming a voyeur privileged to the world of exiled props and role reversal.

Abstract:

Pollard, Amy Rachael. ""Female" stage props: Visualizing the disappearing woman on the early modern stage." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1911/20691.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates stage props as alternate stage representations of female characters. Since the 1970s, a great deal has been written independently about both stage props and about women on the early modern stage, but the two are seldom discussed together. Recent theater criticism has sought to establish a link between stage props and their broader social utility outside the theater, while gender criticism has investigated the paradoxical position of early modern women as both subject and object, particularly in regard to women as consumers and commodities. This work draws together these two lines of investigation in order to highlight the substitution that often occurs between female characters and "female" stage props. The traditional relationship between character and prop, in which the prop is firmly situated as an extension of character, exists as a specifically masculine relationship seldom available to female characters. I focus on the way in which the frequent disappearance of female characters within plays allows women to be represented by one or another of a small group of "female" props like rings, necklaces and other trinkets. The readings of the plays of Shakespeare, Thomas Kyd, Thomas Dekker, Thomas Middleton and Cyril Tourneur suggest that in order to witness female identity in its fullness, attention must be paid not only to interpersonal relationships between gendered subjects, but to the relationships visualized between female subject and object as well. "Female" stage props function as a means of furthering the understanding of how female subjectivity differs from that of male subjectivity on the early modern stage.

Clelland, Cathie Margaret. "More than just tricks : the implications for stage design of Tennessee Williams' notion of 'plastic theatre'." Phd thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/151341.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an exploration of Tennessee Williams' idea of 'plastic theatre,' locating its origins within the theatrical context of the period, with the object of identifying its chief principles and seeking something approaching a definition 'of plastic theatre,' as a starting point from which to demonstrate its application to theatre production and especially to set design. In 1945, with the published version of The Glass Menagerie, Williams launched his theory of 'plastic theatre,' a theatrical mode that would, he believed, answer the problems he perceived in American war-time theatre, and that would help develop a stronger post-war American theatre. Williams claimed that theatre in America placed too much emphasis on words and not enough on the essential elements of theatre. Taking an anti-realist stance, he asserted that this emphasis on words should be replaced by a theatre that recognised the plasticity of the stage and the expressivity of all the elements of play production. In his scripts he sought to present his vision of how his plays would work on stage by demonstrating how these elements should be integrated with text. From Williams' assertion that the physicality of the stage environment is as important as the text, we can deduce that the manner in which the stage space is arranged is a crucial performance element. The notion of 'plastic theatre,' therefore, has significant implications for the practice of set design. The aim of this project is to place Tennessee Williams' ideas within the history of American scenic design and demonstrate the way designers have expressed his ideas. This project engages in two types of research methodologies: historical and practical. The first component begins with an exploration of Williams' theory by reference to his published and unpublished works, particularly his journals and notebooks, followed by a consideration of the rise of the set designer in America so as to contextualise the work of designers of Williams' major plays. I look at the first designers of his plays, leading practitioners who responded to his all-encompassing vision and created designs which not only answered the demands of his scripts, but were to influence the history of stage design in America. I then explore the work of leading designers of Williams plays since 1960, considering how their designs have related to their precedents and to dominant trends in twentieth-century set design. Even though this thesis explores design issues up to the twenty-first century, the focal plays will be limited to those major works of Williams' career up to 1960, the period in which he developed his idea of 'plastic theatre' and wrote plays which demonstrably illustrate its principles. In order to assess what a practical engagement with the texts can reveal about 'plastic theatre,' the practical component comprises the designing of three major Tennessee Williams plays: The Night of the Iguana, Suddenly Last Summer and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Designs for these plays were created and constructed for performances in Canberra, Australia. --provided by Candidate

Abstract:
"Action stage design" is a term which was originally used in the mid-70s in the connection with 1975 Prague Quadrennial. Soviet critic Viktor Berjozkin chose this term to describe a new approach which was apparent in the majority of national expositions. It was an alternative approach to dramatic space, the traditional proscenium theater was systematically abandoned. New possibilities of producing in non-traditional, mainly non- theatrical spaces which offered closer contact with audience were searched. In aesthetic approaches the action stage design abandoned rampant focus on art, illusoriness, embellishment and complicated technical solutions. On the contrary it took inspiration from "earth works" (arte povera) and pop-art. They used "poor" - which means - common and natural materials [mainly fabrics] and everyday objects. Simplicity and inventiveness became an important requirement of the new aesthetics, as well as constant confrontation of dramatic and empirical reality. Stage props were meant to be mainly polysemous. It means that a scenic element could change its meaning and function a few times during the performance thanks to actors activity. For example - a bed became a dining table, an altar, or a prison. It demanded big imagination of spectators, they often became a part of performance....
