This thesis interprets the craft of stand-up comedy as a senes of manipulations. In a medium where interaction with the audience IS often unruly, manipulation IS frequently used to maintain the performer's control over his audience, and to persuade them to laugh. Comedians may also go beyond the immediate manipulation of response to have a more significant influence, persuading audiences to subvert their usual standards of morality, and shaping or re-shaping their opinions and attitudes. This thesis is the first to examine stand-up comedy within an academic framework. It begins with a review of various theories of humour and examines the three major strands of thought; the idea that humour is a way of expressing hostility; the idea that humorous laughter is caused by incongruity; and the idea that humour is connected with a release of tension. Parts of each of these are taken on, in order to establish a method of examining stand-up comedy. A particular emphasis is placed on the incongruity theory, and it is argued that this implies an intrinsic link between the joke and its cu

This thesis examines the multi-dimensional nature of talk surrounding the social phenomenon of performing. Informed by the conversational interview discussions of those closely involved with stand up comedy, the five primary discursive dimensions are considered. These dimensions have been labelled 'Art and Occupation', 'Self and Persona', 'Spontaneous and Rehearsed', 'Talent and Effort', and 'Truth and Believability'. It outlines the failure of previous literature in humour research to move beyond simple stimulus models of joking and laughter.
