Full textMany transportation networks can be modeled by (max,+)-linear systems, i.e., discrete event systems ruled by standard synchronizations (conditions of the form: "for all k>=l, occurrence k of event B is at least t units of time after occurrence k-l of event A"). In some applications, it is also necessary to model simultaneity between events (e.g., for a road equipped with traffic lights, a vehicle can cross an intersection only when the associated traffic light is green). Such conditions cannot be expressed using standard synchronizations. Hence, we introduce the partial synchronization (condition of the form: "event B can only occur when event A occurs"). In this thesis, we consider a class of discrete event systems ruled by standard and partial synchronizations, called (max,+)-systems with partial synchronization. Such systems are split into a main system and a secondary system such that there exist only standard synchronizations between events in the same system and partial synchronizations of events in the secondary system by events in the main system. We adapt some modeling and control approaches developed for (max,+)-linear systems to (max,+)-systems with partial synchronization. Optimal feedforward control and model predictive control for (max,+)-linear systems are extended to (max,+)-systems with partial synchronization. Furthermore, transfer relation and model reference control are provided for the secondary system under a predefined behavior of the main system
Taylor, Gene. "FDDI AS AN EMERGING STANDARD FOR TELEMETRY SYSTEMS." International Foundation for Telemetering, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/612903.
Full textVarious high performance fiber optic networks have been in existence and available now for over 10 years. Virtually all of them, until recently, have been designed around the “better idea” of some single company or engineer, and therefore were or became expensive, proprietary systems, with limited support, and limited or no growth potential. Many benefits were still realized by the users in spite of that; primarily in the areas of increased bandwidth, improved security, and the capability to have data transmission over long distances. However, after 5 years of continued development and refinement, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) X3T9.5 committee has nearly completed acceptance and final approval of the Fiber Data Distributed Interface (FDDI) specifications. The new FDDI standards have already evidenced a tremendous and eager acceptance by the end user community, and are clearly destined to replace Ethernet as the most prevalent network media. FDDI also offers additional benefits specifically of interest to the telemetry market, and therefore represents an ideal Local Area Network (LAN) technology towards which any TM installation should migrate.

Nyckelkomponenterna som inkluderades i modellen var standard, supporting structure, managers and leaders, employees and participation, organizational culture, dealing with resistance och before full roll-out.

Full textFor decades, the United States (U.S.) Department of Defense (DoD) has developed, deployed, and operated hundreds of different types of systems as components of systems-of-systems. Achieving and maintaining joint systems-of-systems interoperability as new systems are added is a constant problem. The Army, Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and Air Force each develop requirements, budgets, and acquire, field and operate systems that function as part of joint systems-of-systems. Technology and threats are rapidly evolving. These globally deployed systems and systems-of-systems employed by combatant commanders must be continuously modernized or risk becoming obsolete, resulting in potential mission failure and loss of life.
Using a wireless telecommunications interface standard case study, this research developed a unique method of planning systems-of-systems modernization using a system dynamics (SD) approach. This approach: a) accounts for key factors that influence the dynamic behavior of systems-of-systems modernization, impacting the ability to modernize systems-of-systems, and b) enables what-if analysis, and decision-making support of systems-of-systems modernization planning options. This research used a mixed-methods approach to demonstrate that the SD model is measurably superior to past practice. Quantitative statistical analysis was performed on 20 years’ (2001–2020) of data. A qualitative, scenario-based approach was used to develop an SD model. The results demonstrate that engineers, managers, and senior decision makers in the DoD can realize statistically significant gains by using an SD model to develop and explore systems-of-systems modernization planning options. This research’s original contribution to knowledge is the development and validation of an SD model for planning systems-of-systems modernization using a mixed-methods research approach.

This thesis proposes to use an adapted version of ESW (Engineering Standard Work) to develop an assessment that enables identification of opportunity areas for the implementation of ESW in an existing Product Development Organization, by integrating the consistency and quality of the work performed by the engineers, with the additional benefit of introducing lean engineering standardized processes that will help them to work in a more structured and efficient way. The standardization tools would add value to the organization by guiding the engineers throughout the product development process that are designed to minimize process variation introduced by the engineer and to eliminate unnecessary activities. The group of these standardized processes with the integrated Lean Engineering tools is named as LESW (Lean Engineering Standard Work), these would provide support defining crucial steps within a process or provide guidelines for specific characteristics of the product design using the current best practices to follow to complete their jobs. They would be based on firsthand experience and would be updated and validated regularly to incorporate any new data or technological developments. With LESW implemented, the engineers no longer have to work from memory. The process documentation provides a baseline, a standard, which would be referenced by any engineer whether experienced or not, and since the process is documented then it will also help to improve the learning curve of new hired engineers. A gap analysis is performed in order to understand the organization's current status vs. desired status, and then, based on the findings, a new way of working is proposed with the implementation of the best suitable lean engineering techniques applied to a product development organization, including LESW as part of the improvement. All this is done keeping the main target of making the organization more efficient, the process friendlier to the engineer, having a more stable and reliable process that can be duplicated in the entire organization. The management would also be benefitted, by having a better control of the programs, avoid delays and reduce costs by reducing the amount of errors committed by the engineers.

Feed-in Tariff (FIT) and Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) are the two most popular renewable energy regulations practiced around the world. The Feed-in Tariff mechanism is more popular in the European countries, while the Renewable Portfolio Standard is popular among several Asian and American countries. Recently, South Korea replaced its FIT mechanism with RPS in an effort to improve its renewable energy sector and also cut government expenses incurred in the FIT model. A policy change like this needs to be analyzed as a part of an entire system in order to understand the different domains and the players that are directly or indirectly affected by the policy change. In the current study, a Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) approach was used to compare RPS policy frameworks as implemented in the US, China, Australia, EU, and the UK in order to highlight best practices and provide benchmarks for the design of an effective RPS system in Korea. The findings from this comparative study are relevant for policymaking in Korea as they provide suggestions on how to modify RPS policy to incentivize the production of renewable energy. An RPS system based on Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), anchored on national Renewable Energy Targets (RETs) and that allows for the use of alternative energy generation technology is recommended for Korea..

In its quest to become a High Reliability Performance (HRP) organization, Amgen manufacturing operations desires to further improve its adherence to, and effectiveness of, its standard operating procedures (SOPs). SOPs are expected to provide clear guidance to operators to enable them to perform their job safely and effectively. This thesis aims to take a step back and answer the question "What is the best way to provide information and instruction to floor operators in order for them to perform their job in the best way possible?" Our hypothesis is that SOPs with content and style customized to the needs of the user will enhance performance along key operational metrics. This thesis includes an analysis of the current challenges of Amgen's existing SOPs including comparison to external benchmarks and academic research. Subsequently, we provide a recommendation on future SOP content, style and supporting infrastructure informed by our research. The analysis concludes with the results of a pilot project designed to evaluate our hypothesis. The analysis indicates that while our initial findings are encouraging, further research is required to conclusively determine the validity of our hypothesis.

Hooke, Adrian J. "Advanced Orbiting Systems: A Standard Architecture for Space Data Communications." International Foundation for Telemetering, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/614735.
Full textThe first thirty years of civilian space exploration were characterized by a series of individual missions, focussed towards specific goals and servicing small and close-knit user communities. Spacecraft (constrained by power, weight and volume considerations) were customized towards mission objectives. Their data handling and communications systems were primarily built for simplicity and robustness, and displayed little commonality from mission to mission. All of the easy space missions have now been flown. As we move into the 1990s, requirements exist for complex missions involving Earth observation, exploration and a more permanent human presence in space. Internationalization of these missions is inevitable as a means to distribute and share costs, and to increase their political stability. Automation of their data handling systems is essential to support reliable, low cost operations. Responding to this environment, the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) was formed in 1982 to develop and promote a full suite of internationally standardized space data communications protocols. The first set of recommended standards, covering the data handling requirements of conventional free-flying scientific spacecraft, was finalized in 1986. Using the international space station "Freedom" program (a cooperative venture between the US, Europe, Canada and Japan) as a requirements model, the CCSDS has now extended its suite of recommended standards to cover "advanced orbiting systems" such as unmanned and man-tended Earth observation platforms, new space transportation systems, and manned laboratories. These systems, which operate as longterm orbiting facilities and therefore have changing user communities, produce prodigious rates and volumes of data including digitized video and audio. For the first time, the orbiting systems will use local area networks for internal data transfer. On the ground, they will interface with networks designed for worldwide Open Systems Interconnection (OSI). This paper reviews the standard data handling service architecture which has been developed by CCSDS. It describes the communications protocols that are recommended for the networked transfer of space mission data, and focuses on the unique requirements of transmitting many different data types through weak signal, noisy space channels at rates which routinely may reach many hundreds of megabits per second.

Full textAs far as substation automation systems are concerned, one of the prime requirements of most utilities today is the interoperability between Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) of different manufacturers. The standard IEC 61850 - Communication Networks and Systems in Substations - allows such interoperability between IEDs for protection and automation of substations. Presently, many manufacturers have implemented, or are in the process of implementing this standard in their IEDs. This has encouraged some utilities to specify IEC is to ensure that both system requirements are met and the features and benefits of the standard are fully exploited. The author of this thesis investigated and brought forward the design of an integrated monitoring protection and control system of a network in Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) campus based of the IEC 61850 standard. A method of testing the physical IED based on Hardware-In-Loop (HIL) configuration with the Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) is developed and implemented. Mapping of IED Substation Configuration Language (SCL) with that of the RTDS GTNET cards is discussed and implemented to further exploit the use of realtime testing with Generic Object Oriented Substation Event messages (GOOSE). The thesis highlight the benefits of interconnecting the reticulation IEDs into a standardised communication network for protection, control and monitoring of each substation event. This improves the access to information and reduces maintenance cost on the reticulation network.

Full textTransformer Differential and overcurrent schemes are traditionally used as main and backup protection respectively. The differential protection relay (SEL487E) has dedicated harmonic restraint function which blocks the relay during the transformer magnetizing inrush conditions. However, the backup overcurrent relay (SEL751A) applied to the transformer protection does not have a harmonic restraint element and trips the overcurrent relay during the inrush conditions. Therefore, to prevent the malfunction caused by the transformer magnetizing inrush current, a novel harmonic blocking method is developed, implemented and tested in the RSCAD simulation environment. The IEEE 14 bus transmission system is considered as a case study. The IEEE 14 bus system is modelled and simulated in the DIgSILENT and RSCAD simulation environments respectively. The developed harmonic blocking scheme is implemented in the Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) simulation environment using Real-Time Digital Simulator and numerical protection IEDs. The developed scheme uses the Harmonic Blocking element (87HB) of the transformer differential relay (SEL487E) to send an IEC61850 GOOSE-based harmonic blocking signal to the backup overcurrent relay (SEL751A) to inhibit it from tripping during the transformer magnetizing inrush current conditions. The hardwired and GOOSE simulation results are analysed for the transformer differential protection and the backup overcurrent protection schemes for internal, external events and transformer magnetizing inrush current conditions. The simulation results proved that the IEC61850 standard-based protection scheme is faster than the hardwired. Therefore, the speed and reliability are improved using the IEC61850 standard-based GOOSE applications to the transformer digital protective relaying system.

Full textThis paper presents an approach to development of generic ground systems to be used for spacecraft testing and operations. This method makes use of a standard modeling method, which enables virtualization of spacecraft. By virtualizing spacecraft, development of generic systems that are applicable to different spacecraft becomes possible even if spacecraft themselves are not standardized. This is because systems can utilize (1) a standard database that can store information on any virtual spacecraft and (2) standard software tools that can be used for any virtual spacecraft. This paper explains the concept of virtualization of spacecraft, introduces the standard model used for virtualization of spacecraft, shows how to manipulate virtual spacecraft with software tools, and presents the core elements of generic ground systems.

This thesis discuss e-invoicing and what view small businesses has on a future use of e-invoicing as a new standard is about to be launched/introduced. Our attempt has been to examine whether SME’s see possible advantages through use of e-invoicing compared to traditional paperwork. The new standard, a joint initiative between Svenska Bankföreningen and the major Swedish banks, is set to make it easier for users, the businesses, to reduce cost of invoices and, in a longer perspective, ease the way in which they are handled.
The theories presented in the thesis describe the concept of e-invoicing and concepts linked to it. Theories collected, linked with research questions and the purpose of the thesis became the foundation when questions for interviews, to ask SME’s in the Jönköping region, were created.
Interviews were carried out either through personal meetings with key informants at their respective offices or through telephone interviews. The questions touched respective business view on e-invoicing, whether they see any advantages and what advantages was considered most important to them. The analysis was performed through analyzing the presented theories to our research questions independent of what was found during the interviews. The empirical findings were analyzed in the same manor and summed up through a comparison of the theories and the empirical findings.
Some of the conclusions we made were that the businesses are positive concerning a new standard for e-invoices as well as them not being worried over the implementation of the standard, due to most of them having standardized information systems. Furthermore we believe businesses handling larger quantities of invoices will gain more from use of e-invoicing, mainly concerning workload and, in the long run reducing cost per invoice.

Full textAUTOSAR (AUTomotive Open System ARchitecture) has been created by automotive manufacturers, suppliers and tools developers in order to establish an open industry standard for automotive E/E(Electrical/Electronic) architectures. AUTOSAR provides a set of concepts and defines a common methodology to develop automotive software platforms. The key features of this standard are modularity and configurability of automotive software; this allows functional reuse of software modules provided by different suppliers and guarantees interoperability of these modules through standardized interfaces. However, the development of an embedded application according to AUTOSAR necessitates configuring a lot of parameters related to the large number of Software Components (SWCs), their allocations to the hardware platform and then, the configurationof each Electronic Control Unit (ECU). Different alternatives are possible during the design of such systems. Each implementation decision may impact system performance and needs therefore to be evaluated and compared against performance constraints and optimization goals. In this thesis, we introduce a holistic optimization approach to synthesizearchitecture E/E of an embedded AUTOSAR system. This approach is based on heuristic and metaheuristic methods. The metaheuristics (e.g. genetic algorithm) has the role to find the most satisfactory allocations of SWCs to ECUs. Each allocation step, two heuristics are developed to solve the problem of the ECU configuration (the number of tasks and priorities, allocation of runnables to tasks, etc.) and networks configuration (the number of messagesand priorities, allocation of data-elements to messages, etc.). In order to evaluate the performance of each allocation, we propose a new analysis method to calculate the response time of tasks, runnables, and end-to-end paths. The architectural exploration approach proposed by this thesis considers the model for periodic applications and is evaluated using generic and industrial applications
