David-Henriet, Xavier. "Discrete Event Systems with Standard and Partial Synchronizations." Thesis, Angers, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015ANGE0010/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Many transportation networks can be modeled by (max,+)-linear systems, i.e., discrete event systems ruled by standard synchronizations (conditions of the form: "for all k>=l, occurrence k of event B is at least t units of time after occurrence k-l of event A"). In some applications, it is also necessary to model simultaneity between events (e.g., for a road equipped with traffic lights, a vehicle can cross an intersection only when the associated traffic light is green). Such conditions cannot be expressed using standard synchronizations. Hence, we introduce the partial synchronization (condition of the form: "event B can only occur when event A occurs"). In this thesis, we consider a class of discrete event systems ruled by standard and partial synchronizations, called (max,+)-systems with partial synchronization. Such systems are split into a main system and a secondary system such that there exist only standard synchronizations between events in the same system and partial synchronizations of events in the secondary system by events in the main system. We adapt some modeling and control approaches developed for (max,+)-linear systems to (max,+)-systems with partial synchronization. Optimal feedforward control and model predictive control for (max,+)-linear systems are extended to (max,+)-systems with partial synchronization. Furthermore, transfer relation and model reference control are provided for the secondary system under a predefined behavior of the main system

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / November 04-07, 1991 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada
Various high performance fiber optic networks have been in existence and available now for over 10 years. Virtually all of them, until recently, have been designed around the “better idea” of some single company or engineer, and therefore were or became expensive, proprietary systems, with limited support, and limited or no growth potential. Many benefits were still realized by the users in spite of that; primarily in the areas of increased bandwidth, improved security, and the capability to have data transmission over long distances. However, after 5 years of continued development and refinement, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) X3T9.5 committee has nearly completed acceptance and final approval of the Fiber Data Distributed Interface (FDDI) specifications. The new FDDI standards have already evidenced a tremendous and eager acceptance by the end user community, and are clearly destined to replace Ethernet as the most prevalent network media. FDDI also offers additional benefits specifically of interest to the telemetry market, and therefore represents an ideal Local Area Network (LAN) technology towards which any TM installation should migrate.

Lundmark, Felix. "Standard and geographical dispersion : A study at the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration."

Abstract:
This is the project report for the master thesis project in Industrial design engineering at Luleå University of Technology. The project spanned from January to June 2018. The project took place at the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) in the sub-division FSV MarkV. FMV makes sure that Sweden’s defence and military have the proper and functioning equipment, whereas MarkV is responsible for providing services directed towards equipment operated on land.  MarkV wanted to implement standard as part of their planned introduction of MarkV Production System (MPS) in 2019. MPS faced the challenge of implementation at several geographically dispersed workshops. This project was therefore carried out to investigate if and how centralized standards could be implemented within their geographically dispersed organization. The project has included visits to the workshops in Boden and Luleå as well as participation at a meeting with the project group developing MPS. However, the project has mainly been conducted from a theoretical standpoint, where literature about this subject has been explored. From the theoretical framework, a requirement specification was compiled. This specification was used to point out the key components to a successful implementation. The result from this project was a model developed to describe how each and every of the key component worked, as well as how MarkV could go about affecting it. The key components in this model was standard, supporting structure, managers and leaders, employees and participation, organizational culture and dealing with resistance. A section in this model was later dedicated to addressing what must be thought of before full roll-out. It was concluded that MarkV can implement centralized standards. However, MarkV must understand that the demands put on the organization will vary between standard and standard work. Standards were also considered less likely to meet contradiction upon implementation compared to standard work. The obstacles to implementation was identified as human resistance and non-human resistance. However, it was also concluded that non-human actors, such as the standard itself and the platform for MPS could possibly facilitate change if properly designed. Identifying the root cause of resistance could contribute to the change process in terms of acting as constructive critique. Using the proposed rule-of-thumb could help MarkV cope with resistance without spending too much energy on convincing employees. For MarkV to maintain and improve standard, it was concluded that they must perform follow-up and constructively use deviations. MarkV has been recommended to use the developed model in their further development of MPS. Practical tips on how to affect individual components has been presented in the model itself as well as in the final recommendation.
Nyckelkomponenterna som inkluderades i modellen var standard, supporting structure, managers and leaders, employees and participation, organizational culture, dealing with resistance och before full roll-out.

Kosiuk, Ilona. "Relaxation oscillations in slow-fast systems beyond the standard form." Doctoral thesis, Universitätsbibliothek Leipzig, 2013. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bsz:15-qucosa-100566.

Full text
Abstract:
Relaxation oscillations are highly non-linear oscillations, which appear to feature many important biological phenomena such as heartbeat, neuronal activity, and population cycles of predator-prey type. They are characterized by repeated switching of slow and fast motions and occur naturally in singularly perturbed ordinary differential equations, which exhibit dynamics on different time scales. Traditionally, slow-fast systems and the related oscillatory phenomena -- such as relaxation oscillations -- have been studied by the method of the matched asymptotic expansions, techniques from non-standard analysis, and recently a more qualitative approach known as geometric singular perturbation theory. It turns out that relaxation oscillations can be found in a more general setting; in particular, in slow-fast systems, which are not written in the standard form. Systems in which separation into slow and fast variables is not given a priori, arise frequently in applications. Many of these systems include additionally various parameters of different orders of magnitude and complicated (non-polynomial) non-linearities. This poses several mathematical challenges, since the application of singular perturbation arguments is not at all straightforward. For that reason most of such systems have been studied only numerically guided by phase-space analysis arguments or analyzed in a rather non-rigorous way. It turns out that the main idea of singular perturbation approach can also be applied in such non-standard cases. This thesis is concerned with the application of concepts from geometric singular perturbation theory and geometric desingularization based on the blow-up method to the study of relaxation oscillations in slow-fast systems beyond the standard form. A detailed geometric analysis of oscillatory mechanisms in three mathematical models describing biochemical processes is presented. In all the three cases the aim is to detect the presence of an isolated periodic movement represented by a limit cycle. By using geometric arguments from the perspective of dynamical systems theory and geometric desingularization based on the blow-up method analytic proofs of the existence of limit cycles in the models are provided. This work shows -- in the context of non-trivial applications -- that the geometric approach, in particular the blow-up method, is valuable for the understanding of the dynamics of systems with no explicit splitting into slow and fast variables, and for systems depending singularly on several parameters.

Robinson, Brian E. "A System Dynamics Approach to Planning Systems-of-Systems Modernization| A Wireless Telecommunications Interface Standard Case Study." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10845319.

Full text
Abstract:

For decades, the United States (U.S.) Department of Defense (DoD) has developed, deployed, and operated hundreds of different types of systems as components of systems-of-systems. Achieving and maintaining joint systems-of-systems interoperability as new systems are added is a constant problem. The Army, Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and Air Force each develop requirements, budgets, and acquire, field and operate systems that function as part of joint systems-of-systems. Technology and threats are rapidly evolving. These globally deployed systems and systems-of-systems employed by combatant commanders must be continuously modernized or risk becoming obsolete, resulting in potential mission failure and loss of life.

Using a wireless telecommunications interface standard case study, this research developed a unique method of planning systems-of-systems modernization using a system dynamics (SD) approach. This approach: a) accounts for key factors that influence the dynamic behavior of systems-of-systems modernization, impacting the ability to modernize systems-of-systems, and b) enables what-if analysis, and decision-making support of systems-of-systems modernization planning options. This research used a mixed-methods approach to demonstrate that the SD model is measurably superior to past practice. Quantitative statistical analysis was performed on 20 years’ (2001–2020) of data. A qualitative, scenario-based approach was used to develop an SD model. The results demonstrate that engineers, managers, and senior decision makers in the DoD can realize statistically significant gains by using an SD model to develop and explore systems-of-systems modernization planning options. This research’s original contribution to knowledge is the development and validation of an SD model for planning systems-of-systems modernization using a mixed-methods research approach.

This thesis proposes to use an adapted version of ESW (Engineering Standard Work) to develop an assessment that enables identification of opportunity areas for the implementation of ESW in an existing Product Development Organization, by integrating the consistency and quality of the work performed by the engineers, with the additional benefit of introducing lean engineering standardized processes that will help them to work in a more structured and efficient way. The standardization tools would add value to the organization by guiding the engineers throughout the product development process that are designed to minimize process variation introduced by the engineer and to eliminate unnecessary activities. The group of these standardized processes with the integrated Lean Engineering tools is named as LESW (Lean Engineering Standard Work), these would provide support defining crucial steps within a process or provide guidelines for specific characteristics of the product design using the current best practices to follow to complete their jobs. They would be based on firsthand experience and would be updated and validated regularly to incorporate any new data or technological developments. With LESW implemented, the engineers no longer have to work from memory. The process documentation provides a baseline, a standard, which would be referenced by any engineer whether experienced or not, and since the process is documented then it will also help to improve the learning curve of new hired engineers. A gap analysis is performed in order to understand the organization's current status vs. desired status, and then, based on the findings, a new way of working is proposed with the implementation of the best suitable lean engineering techniques applied to a product development organization, including LESW as part of the improvement. All this is done keeping the main target of making the organization more efficient, the process friendlier to the engineer, having a more stable and reliable process that can be duplicated in the entire organization. The management would also be benefitted, by having a better control of the programs, avoid delays and reduce costs by reducing the amount of errors committed by the engineers.

Feed-in Tariff (FIT) and Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) are the two most popular renewable energy regulations practiced around the world. The Feed-in Tariff mechanism is more popular in the European countries, while the Renewable Portfolio Standard is popular among several Asian and American countries. Recently, South Korea replaced its FIT mechanism with RPS in an effort to improve its renewable energy sector and also cut government expenses incurred in the FIT model. A policy change like this needs to be analyzed as a part of an entire system in order to understand the different domains and the players that are directly or indirectly affected by the policy change. In the current study, a Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) approach was used to compare RPS policy frameworks as implemented in the US, China, Australia, EU, and the UK in order to highlight best practices and provide benchmarks for the design of an effective RPS system in Korea. The findings from this comparative study are relevant for policymaking in Korea as they provide suggestions on how to modify RPS policy to incentivize the production of renewable energy. An RPS system based on Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), anchored on national Renewable Energy Targets (RETs) and that allows for the use of alternative energy generation technology is recommended for Korea..

Viljoen, Deon Walter. "The specification and design of a prototype 2-D MPEG-4 authoring tool." Thesis, University of Port Elizabeth, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1015741.

Abstract:
The purpose of this project was the specification, design and implementation of a prototype 2-D MPEG-4 authoring tool. A literature study was conducted of the MPEG-4 standard and multimedia authoring tools to determine the specification and design of a prototype 2- D MPEG-4 authoring tool. The specification and design was used as a basis for the implementation of a prototype 2-D MPEG-4 authoring tool that complies with the Complete 2-D Scene Graph Profile. The need for research into MPEG-4 authoring tools arose from the reported lack of knowledge of the MPEG-4 standard and the limited implementations of MPEG-4 authoring tools available to content authors. In order for MPEG-4 to reach its full potential, it will require authoring tools and content players that satisfy the needs of its users. The theoretical component of this dissertation included a literature study of the MPEG-4 standard and an investigation of relevant multimedia authoring systems. MPEG-4 was introduced as a standard that allows for the creation and streaming of interactive multimedia content at variable bit rates over high and low bandwidth connections. The requirements for the prototype 2-D MPEG-4 authoring system were documented and a prototype system satisfying the requirements was designed, implemented and evaluated. The evaluation of the prototype system showed that the system successfully satisfied all its requirements and that it provides the user with an easy to use and intuitive authoring tool. MPEG-4 has the potential to satisfy the increasing demand for innovative multimedia content on low bandwidth networks, including the Internet and mobile networks, as well as the need expressed by users to interact with multimedia content. This dissertation makes an important contribution to the understanding of the MPEG-4 standard, its functionality and the design of a 2-D MPEG-4 Authoring tool. Keywords: MPEG-4; MPEG-4 authoring; Binary Format for Scenes.

Valsamakis, Nikolas. "Non-standard sound synthesis with dynamic models." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2841.

Full text
Abstract:
This Thesis proposes three main objectives: (i) to provide the concept of a new generalized non-standard synthesis model that would provide the framework for incorporating other non-standard synthesis approaches; (ii) to explore dynamic sound modeling through the application of new non-standard synthesis techniques and procedures; and (iii) to experiment with dynamic sound synthesis for the creation of novel sound objects. In order to achieve these objectives, this Thesis introduces a new paradigm for non-standard synthesis that is based in the algorithmic assemblage of minute wave segments to form sound waveforms. This paradigm is called Extended Waveform Segment Synthesis (EWSS) and incorporates a hierarchy of algorithmic models for the generation of microsound structures. The concepts of EWSS are illustrated with the development and presentation of a novel non-standard synthesis system, the Dynamic Waveform Segment Synthesis (DWSS). DWSS features and combines a variety of algorithmic models for direct synthesis generation: list generation and permutation, tendency masks, trigonometric functions, stochastic functions, chaotic functions and grammars. The core mechanism of DWSS is based in an extended application of Cellular Automata. The potential of the synthetic capabilities of DWSS is explored in a series of Case Studies where a number of sound object were generated revealing (i) the capabilities of the system to generate sound morphologies belonging to other non-standard synthesis approaches and, (ii) the capabilities of the system of generating novel sound objects with dynamic morphologies. The introduction of EWSS and DWSS is preceded by an extensive and critical overview on the concepts of microsound synthesis, algorithmic composition, the two cultures of computer music, the heretical approach in composition, non- standard synthesis and sonic emergence along with the thorough examination of algorithmic models and their application in sound synthesis and electroacoustic composition. This Thesis also proposes (i) a new definition for “algorithmic composition”, (ii) the term “totalistic algorithmic composition”, and (iii) four discrete aspects of non-standard synthesis.

Abstract:
With the development of internet and the trend of information system technology, the object of digital library research has extended to the application of digital archives. Basically, digital libraries store huge amounts of data, including text, image, map audio, video and illustration via electronic formats. Further more, digital libraries could be conveniently accessed through the Internet. As the research intention of network information systems, the critical technology in digital library research could be how to let users effectively harvest correct information from the digital library. Digital library users could discover, present, and organize knowledge among these data of digital libraries. The traditional library automation system, related applying technologies and protocols, such as MARC, Z39.50 and ISO 2709, could not totally match the requirement of digital archives. The purpose of this research is to find out how to effectively manage and apply the related technology of digital archive to handle the existing operation processes in library and the management requirement of digital archives. This paper discusses an evolution model of the related technology of library automation systems.

In its quest to become a High Reliability Performance (HRP) organization, Amgen manufacturing operations desires to further improve its adherence to, and effectiveness of, its standard operating procedures (SOPs). SOPs are expected to provide clear guidance to operators to enable them to perform their job safely and effectively. This thesis aims to take a step back and answer the question "What is the best way to provide information and instruction to floor operators in order for them to perform their job in the best way possible?" Our hypothesis is that SOPs with content and style customized to the needs of the user will enhance performance along key operational metrics. This thesis includes an analysis of the current challenges of Amgen's existing SOPs including comparison to external benchmarks and academic research. Subsequently, we provide a recommendation on future SOP content, style and supporting infrastructure informed by our research. The analysis concludes with the results of a pilot project designed to evaluate our hypothesis. The analysis indicates that while our initial findings are encouraging, further research is required to conclusively determine the validity of our hypothesis.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 30-November 02, 1989 / Town & Country Hotel & Convention Center, San Diego, California
The first thirty years of civilian space exploration were characterized by a series of individual missions, focussed towards specific goals and servicing small and close-knit user communities. Spacecraft (constrained by power, weight and volume considerations) were customized towards mission objectives. Their data handling and communications systems were primarily built for simplicity and robustness, and displayed little commonality from mission to mission. All of the easy space missions have now been flown. As we move into the 1990s, requirements exist for complex missions involving Earth observation, exploration and a more permanent human presence in space. Internationalization of these missions is inevitable as a means to distribute and share costs, and to increase their political stability. Automation of their data handling systems is essential to support reliable, low cost operations. Responding to this environment, the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) was formed in 1982 to develop and promote a full suite of internationally standardized space data communications protocols. The first set of recommended standards, covering the data handling requirements of conventional free-flying scientific spacecraft, was finalized in 1986. Using the international space station "Freedom" program (a cooperative venture between the US, Europe, Canada and Japan) as a requirements model, the CCSDS has now extended its suite of recommended standards to cover "advanced orbiting systems" such as unmanned and man-tended Earth observation platforms, new space transportation systems, and manned laboratories. These systems, which operate as longterm orbiting facilities and therefore have changing user communities, produce prodigious rates and volumes of data including digitized video and audio. For the first time, the orbiting systems will use local area networks for internal data transfer. On the ground, they will interface with networks designed for worldwide Open Systems Interconnection (OSI). This paper reviews the standard data handling service architecture which has been developed by CCSDS. It describes the communications protocols that are recommended for the networked transfer of space mission data, and focuses on the unique requirements of transmitting many different data types through weak signal, noisy space channels at rates which routinely may reach many hundreds of megabits per second.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The dissertation presents novel methodologies to realize a multi-band and multi-standard receiver with an interference-cancellation capability. First, the receiver specifications are derived from the wireless communication standard. These specifications are then used to obtain the required amount of TX leakage cancellation by using a proposed frequency selective feedback topology with multi-band capability. The effectiveness of this technique is demonstrated by the measurement of prototype integrated circuit (IC). To make the IC operate for multi-standard, another novel technique is also proposed for a channel-selection filter. With a proposed interpolated resistor bank, the active-RC channel-selection filter has programmable gain and pseudo-continuous bandwidth, which reduce the total power consumption and silicon area of the receiver. The measured result of a prototype silicon chip shows the effectiveness of the technique. With these two topologies, a multi-band multi-standard receiver that uses low power can be realized at a cost.

Abstract:
Geothermal energy consumption is projected to increase along with other renewable energy in the future. Therefore, it is important to have a better understanding on the evolution of geothermal systems to optimize the exploitation of such resources. Generally, numerical models are used as a fundamental tool to study a potential geothermal field. However, current modeling practices tend to focus on the shallow area around the heat source, while ignoring the deeper part below the heat source. The purpose of this project is to observe the influence of lower boundary at the bottom of intrusion towards the evolution of geothermal system, while changing the permeability and topography of host rock systematically, using a software from USGS called HYDROTHERM. Simulations differed in three main aspects: 1) having a layer below, or having the bottom boundary directly below intrusion, 2) different topographies with volcanic significance, and 3) varying permeabilities of the host rock. The study is based on a fossil geothermal system, the Cerro Bayo laccolith in Chachahuén volcanic complex (Neuquén Basin), Argentina. The input parameters were obtained in several ways. ILMAT Geothermometry analysis provide the temperature value related to the intrusion. The whole rock data is used to determined density of the intrusion by calculating partial molar volume of the oxides. The other parameters, e.g. densities of the host rock and the impermeable layer, permeability, porosity, and thermal conductivity were obtained from literature. The result from numerical modeling shows that the bottom boundary below intrusion strongly affect the entire system evolution. The added layer (with constant permeability) has strong influence on the life-span of the system. Additionally, while taking into account on the variation of topography and permeabilities, the models show two temperature anomalies: 1) A caldera volcano’s geometry “traps” heat below the caldera, whereas shield and strato-volcano geometries “push” heat away from below the volcanic edifice, and 2) a low temperature anomaly develops beneath the intrusion in all high permeability models with an added layer. Finally, this assessment could prove to be useful as prior knowledge for optimizing the extraction of heat from a given geothermal field, as well as future investigations towards geological applicability of numerical models of geothermal systems, hydrothermal alteration, and ore formation processes.

Abstract:
The aim of this PhD thesis is to develop a framework for adaptive intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) in the domain of Modern Standard Arabic language. This framework will comprise of a new approach to using a fuzzy inference mechanism and generic rules in guiding the learning process. In addition, the framework will demonstrate another contribution in which the system can be adapted to be used in the teaching of different languages. A prototype system will be developed to demonstrate these features. This system is targeted at adult English-speaking casual learners with no pre-knowledge of the Arabic language. It will consist of two parts: an ITS for learners to use and a teachers‘ tool for configuring and customising the teaching rules and artificial intelligence components among other configuration operations. The system also provides a diverse teaching-strategies‘ environment based on multiple instructional strategies. This approach is based on general rules that provide means to a reconfigurable prediction. The ITS determines the learner‘s learning characteristics using multiple fuzzy inferences. It has a reconfigurable design that can be altered by the teacher at runtime via a teacher-interface. A framework for an independent domain (i.e. pluggable-domain) for foreign language tutoring systems is introduced in this research. This approach allows the system to adapt to the teaching of a different language with little changes required. Such a feature has the advantages of reducing the time and cost required for building intelligent language tutoring systems. To evaluate the proposed system, two experiments are conducted with two versions of the software: the ITS and a cut down version with no artificial intelligence components. The learners used the ITS had shown an increase in scores between the post-test and the pre-test with learning gain of 35% compared to 25% of the learners from the cut down version.

Long, Margaret J. "E-Business Reporting: Towards a Global Standard for Financial Reporting Systems Using XBRL." NSUWorks, 2013. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/221.

Full text
Abstract:
Reporting systems can provide transparency into financial markets necessary for a sustainable, prosperous global economy. The most widely used global platform for exchanging electronic information about companies to regulatory bodies is XBRL. Standards for this platform are in the process of becoming legally harmonized, but not all countries are mandating e-business reporting. A harmonized global standard for business reporting aligns practices between countries, while recognizing the need for flexibility within each social system and government, whereas international law would establish one standard for all. The research shows that goal of creating transparent global financial information in aggregate searchable form for the public remains elusive under the harmonized approach. The research explores the standardization process at the country level using a grounded theory approach in the G20 countries. The problem of a not having a global standard is framed in the financial reporting dimensions of Law, Accounting Standards, Information Standards, and Assurance Standards, which are existing standards integral to creating high quality transparent financial information. The dimensions exist to some extent in each country, and are in process of being harmonized. The research shows that current legal mandates for the XBRL standard impact the number of firms filing in XBRL to regulators. However, problems with data quality and data assurance have not been addressed with the current legislative initiatives. There is supply of data, but no public demand due to quality issues. There are three levels in the process where data alignment is needed for interoperability: taxonomy use must be consistent, taxonomy structure must be the same, and agreed upon minimum content must be useful for analysis. Currently, data sets between countries are not interoperable or comparable for aggregation due to local adoptions of XBRL taxonomies. Legal mandates alone have not produced quality electronic financial information. Additionally, accounting and assurance standards are not completely aligned. The contributions of this paper provide an understanding of how global standards are being harmonized in the G20 countries based on the common value of financial information transparency in e-business reporting.

Abstract:
Thesis (Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.
As far as substation automation systems are concerned, one of the prime requirements of most utilities today is the interoperability between Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) of different manufacturers. The standard IEC 61850 - Communication Networks and Systems in Substations - allows such interoperability between IEDs for protection and automation of substations. Presently, many manufacturers have implemented, or are in the process of implementing this standard in their IEDs. This has encouraged some utilities to specify IEC is to ensure that both system requirements are met and the features and benefits of the standard are fully exploited. The author of this thesis investigated and brought forward the design of an integrated monitoring protection and control system of a network in Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) campus based of the IEC 61850 standard. A method of testing the physical IED based on Hardware-In-Loop (HIL) configuration with the Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) is developed and implemented. Mapping of IED Substation Configuration Language (SCL) with that of the RTDS GTNET cards is discussed and implemented to further exploit the use of realtime testing with Generic Object Oriented Substation Event messages (GOOSE). The thesis highlight the benefits of interconnecting the reticulation IEDs into a standardised communication network for protection, control and monitoring of each substation event. This improves the access to information and reduces maintenance cost on the reticulation network.

Abstract:
Recent technological advances in the RF and wireless industry has led to the design requirement of more sophisticated devices which can meet stringent specifications of bandwidth, data rate and throughput. These devices are required to be extremely sensitive and hence any external interference from other systems can severely affect the device and the output. This thesis introduces the existing problem in nonlinear components in a multi-standard wireless system due to interfering signals and suggests potential solution to the problem. Advances in RF and wireless systems with emerging new communication standards have made reconfigurablility and tunability a very viable option. RF transceivers are optimised for multi-standard operation, where one band of frequency can act as an interfering signal to the other band. Due to the presence of nonlinear circuits in the transceiver chains such as power amplifiers, reconfigurable and tunable filters and modulators, these interfering signals produce nonlinear distortion products which can deform the output signal considerably. Hence it becomes necessary to block these interfering signals using special components. The main objective of this thesis is to analyse and experimentally verify the nonlinear distortions in various RF circuits such as reconfigurable and tunable filters and devise ways to minimize the overall nonlinear distortion in the presence of other interfering signals. Reconfigurbality and tunablity in filters can be achieved using components such as varactor diodes, PIN diodes and optical switches. Nonlinear distortions in such components are measured using different signals and results noted. The compensation method developed to minimize nonlinear distortions in RF circuits caused due to interfering signals is explored thoroughly in this thesis. Compensation method used involves the design of novel microstrip bandstop filters which can block the interfering signals and hence give a clean output spectrum at the final stage. Recent years have seen the emergence of electronic band gap technology which has “band gap” properties meaning that a bandstop response is seen within particular range of frequency. This concept was utilised in the design of several novel bandstop filters using defected microstrip structure. Novel tunable bandstop filters has been introduced in order to block the unwanted signal. Fixed single-band and dual-band filters using DMS were fabricated with excellent achieved results. These filters were further extended to tunable structures. A dual-band tunable filter with miniaturized size was developed and designed. The designed filters were further used in the compensation technique where different scenarios showing the effect of interfering signals in wireless transceiver were described. Mathematical analysis proved the validation of the use of a bandstop filter as an inter-stage component. Distortion improvements of around 10dB have been experimentally verified using a power amplifier as device under test. Further experimental verification was carried out with a transmitter which included reconfigurable RF filters and power amplifier where an improvement of 15dB was achieved.

Abstract:
Thesis (Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.
Transformer Differential and overcurrent schemes are traditionally used as main and backup protection respectively. The differential protection relay (SEL487E) has dedicated harmonic restraint function which blocks the relay during the transformer magnetizing inrush conditions. However, the backup overcurrent relay (SEL751A) applied to the transformer protection does not have a harmonic restraint element and trips the overcurrent relay during the inrush conditions. Therefore, to prevent the malfunction caused by the transformer magnetizing inrush current, a novel harmonic blocking method is developed, implemented and tested in the RSCAD simulation environment. The IEEE 14 bus transmission system is considered as a case study. The IEEE 14 bus system is modelled and simulated in the DIgSILENT and RSCAD simulation environments respectively. The developed harmonic blocking scheme is implemented in the Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) simulation environment using Real-Time Digital Simulator and numerical protection IEDs. The developed scheme uses the Harmonic Blocking element (87HB) of the transformer differential relay (SEL487E) to send an IEC61850 GOOSE-based harmonic blocking signal to the backup overcurrent relay (SEL751A) to inhibit it from tripping during the transformer magnetizing inrush current conditions. The hardwired and GOOSE simulation results are analysed for the transformer differential protection and the backup overcurrent protection schemes for internal, external events and transformer magnetizing inrush current conditions. The simulation results proved that the IEC61850 standard-based protection scheme is faster than the hardwired. Therefore, the speed and reliability are improved using the IEC61850 standard-based GOOSE applications to the transformer digital protective relaying system.

Abstract:
Efficient and effective vision systems are proposed in this work for object detection for ground&aerial robots venturing into unknown environments with minimum vision aids, i.e. a single camera. The first problem attempted is that of object search and identification in a situation similar to a disaster site. Based on image analysis, typical pixel-based characteristics of a visual marker have been established to search for, using a block based search algorithm, along with a noise and interference filter. The proposed algorithm has been successfully utilized for the International Aerial Robotics competition 2009. The second problem deals with object detection for collision avoidance in 3D environments. It has been shown that a 3D model of the scene can be generated from 2D image information from a single camera flying through a very small arc of lateral flight around the object, without the need of capturing images from all sides. The forward flight simulations show that the depth extracted from forward motion is usable for large part of the image. After analyzing various constraints associated with this and other existing approaches, Motion Estimation has been proposed. Implementation of motion estimation on videos from onboard cameras resulted in various undesirable and noisy vectors. An in depth analysis of such vectors is presented and solutions are proposed and implemented, demonstrating desirable motion estimation for collision avoidance task.

Abstract:
The thesis offers an in-depth analysis on the OPC-UA communication protocol. In particular, we want to study and analyze the possibility of implementing this protocol on automatic machines currently on the market by effectively replacing the entire M2M communication architecture, or in any case by offering the possibility of creating a standard communication system in the Business layer of the hierarchy of the levels of communication. In order to propose OPC-UA as a new communication system, the first part of the following thesis focuses on research and study of the protocol. In fact, thanks to the collection of data sheets, publications and other documentation available from seminars held in the past years by industry experts, who define the characteristics and properties of the standard, it was possible to fully learn the principle of operation. Based on the study of this standard regulated by the IEC 62541 standard, specific tests were carried out on a test bench made with PLC of the main vendors currently on the market to test the potential of OPC-UA, thus giving a technical aspect to the second part of the following elaborate. By considering the limitations imposed by software developers on the implementation of OPC-UA in the development environments of their PLCs, it was therefore possible to write software codes that tested the dynamism, scalability and communication performance between PLCs of different vendors connected together. Finally, the results of the communication tests between the various platforms have been collected in tables and reported at the end of this document with the aim of evaluating and giving a technical response, followed by personal considerations, on the effective implementability of OPC-UA in the industry.

Abstract:
Several cascading outages that have occurred in the past have shown the importance of performing appropriate and coordinated transmission system planning between the different Planning Coordinators and Transmission Planners in a power system. In very large, interconnected systems, this coordinated planning is necessary due to the inherent complexity that characterizes non-lineal electric power systems. A major task in transmission system planning is to conduct contingency studies that would determine the consequences in the system when single or multiple of its elements trip due to failure or are disconnected during scheduled maintenance outages. This work develops general programs aimed at facilitating the performance of such contingency studies based on the latest Transmission System Planning Performance Requirement standard issued by NERC, TPL-001-4. The focus of this work is on the requirements for the steady state analysis described in the standard, which includes specific steady state performance planning events. The developed programs have been tested in a few base cases and have demonstrated their ability to facilitate contingency studies with any system regardless of its size.

When communicating with spacecrafts, the international standard is to use the protocols defined by CCSDS. In this study, the Space Packet Protocol from CCSDS is converted to the Digital Recording Standard used in aviation. The goal of the study is to find out in what way such a conversion can be made, as well as analyzing the efficiency of different packing methods for the Digital Recording Standard. An application is developed in order to perform the conversion, and the performance of said application is profiled using different packet sizes. In the end the results are evaluated and an optimal packet size is found in terms of runtime and memory usage. In the end we conclude that a packet size of 216 bytes is best when prioritizing speed, and a packet size of 219 bytes is best when prioritizing memory.

Full text
Abstract:
Bott-Samelson varieties associated to reductive algebraic groups are much studied in representation theory and algebraic geometry. They not only provide resolutions of singularities for Schubert varieties but also have interesting geometric properties of their own. A distinguished feature of Bott-Samelson varieties is that they admit natural affine coordinate charts, which allow explicit computations of geometric quantities in coordinates. Poisson geometry dates back to 19th century mechanics, and the more recent theory of quantum groups provides a large class of Poisson structures associated to reductive algebraic groups. A holomorphic Poisson structure Π on Bott-Samelson varieties associated to complex semisimple Lie groups, referred to as the standard Poisson structure on Bott-Samelson varieties in this thesis, was introduced and studied by J. H. Lu. In particular, it was shown by Lu that the Poisson structure Π was algebraic and gave rise to an iterated Poisson polynomial algebra associated to each affine chart of the Bott-Samelson variety. The formula by Lu, however, was in terms of certain holomorphic vector fields on the Bott-Samelson variety, and it is much desirable to have explicit formulas for these vector fields in coordinates. In this thesis, the holomorphic vector fields in Lu’s formula for the Poisson structure Π were computed explicitly in coordinates in every affine chart of the Bott-Samelson variety, resulting in an explicit formula for the Poisson structure Π in coordinates. The formula revealed the explicit relations between the Poisson structure and the root system and the structure constants of the underlying Lie algebra in any basis. Using a Chevalley basis, it was shown that the Poisson structure restricted to every affine chart of the Bott-Samelson variety was defined over the integers. Consequently, one obtained a large class of iterated Poisson polynomial algebras over any field, and in particular, over fields of positive characteristic. Concrete examples were given at the end of the thesis.

This paper presents an approach to development of generic ground systems to be used for spacecraft testing and operations. This method makes use of a standard modeling method, which enables virtualization of spacecraft. By virtualizing spacecraft, development of generic systems that are applicable to different spacecraft becomes possible even if spacecraft themselves are not standardized. This is because systems can utilize (1) a standard database that can store information on any virtual spacecraft and (2) standard software tools that can be used for any virtual spacecraft. This paper explains the concept of virtualization of spacecraft, introduces the standard model used for virtualization of spacecraft, shows how to manipulate virtual spacecraft with software tools, and presents the core elements of generic ground systems.

Abstract:
Formal design methods are becoming increasingly recognised as being useful for specifying complex systems. Incorporating formal methods in the early stages of a design process introduces the possibility of using mathematical techniques, hence improving the effectiveness of a design process. The Z notation has been applied mainly to specifying software, although it has also been used for specifying hardware and general systems. The Z notation fulfils two functions in this thesis. The first function is as a notation for representing specifications of complex systems, and the second function is as a notation for representing implementations of the same complex systems. The suitability of the Z notation for these functions is investigated in three studies. Both the specifications and implementations are represented as unified collections of Schemas that describe the behaviour in response to each set of input conditions. In each of the studies, both the specifications and implementations of the complex system take place at an early stage in a design process. Throughout this thesis non rigorous proof sketches prove that the implementations meet the requirements of the specifications.

Abstract:

The new standard, a joint initiative between Svenska Bankföreningen and the major Swedish banks, is set to make it easier for users, the businesses, to reduce cost of invoices and, in a longer perspective, ease the way in which they are handled.

The theories presented in the thesis describe the concept of e-invoicing and concepts linked to it. Theories collected, linked with research questions and the purpose of the thesis became the foundation when questions for interviews, to ask SME’s in the Jönköping region, were created.

Interviews were carried out either through personal meetings with key informants at their respective offices or through telephone interviews. The questions touched respective business view on e-invoicing, whether they see any advantages and what advantages was considered most important to them. The analysis was performed through analyzing the presented theories to our research questions independent of what was found during the interviews. The empirical findings were analyzed in the same manor and summed up through a comparison of the theories and the empirical findings.

Some of the conclusions we made were that the businesses are positive concerning a new standard for e-invoices as well as them not being worried over the implementation of the standard, due to most of them having standardized information systems. Furthermore we believe businesses handling larger quantities of invoices will gain more from use of e-invoicing, mainly concerning workload and, in the long run reducing cost per invoice.

Abstract:
AUTOSAR (AUTomotive Open System ARchitecture) has been created by automotive manufacturers, suppliers and tools developers in order to establish an open industry standard for automotive E/E(Electrical/Electronic) architectures. AUTOSAR provides a set of concepts and defines a common methodology to develop automotive software platforms. The key features of this standard are modularity and configurability of automotive software; this allows functional reuse of software modules provided by different suppliers and guarantees interoperability of these modules through standardized interfaces. However, the development of an embedded application according to AUTOSAR necessitates configuring a lot of parameters related to the large number of Software Components (SWCs), their allocations to the hardware platform and then, the configurationof each Electronic Control Unit (ECU). Different alternatives are possible during the design of such systems. Each implementation decision may impact system performance and needs therefore to be evaluated and compared against performance constraints and optimization goals. In this thesis, we introduce a holistic optimization approach to synthesizearchitecture E/E of an embedded AUTOSAR system. This approach is based on heuristic and metaheuristic methods. The metaheuristics (e.g. genetic algorithm) has the role to find the most satisfactory allocations of SWCs to ECUs. Each allocation step, two heuristics are developed to solve the problem of the ECU configuration (the number of tasks and priorities, allocation of runnables to tasks, etc.) and networks configuration (the number of messagesand priorities, allocation of data-elements to messages, etc.). In order to evaluate the performance of each allocation, we propose a new analysis method to calculate the response time of tasks, runnables, and end-to-end paths. The architectural exploration approach proposed by this thesis considers the model for periodic applications and is evaluated using generic and industrial applications

Abstract:
Two complete cradle to grave life cycle assessments are conducted for the comparison of a house built after today’s building standard, TEK07, and a passive house built after the Norwegian Standard NS 3700:2010. Both houses are projected by the building company Nordbohus AS, and are to be constructed in Stord, on the west coast of Norway. The usable floor area, BRA, is 187 m2 for both houses, and a lifetime of 50 years is assumed. The houses are constructed with a wooden framework, insulated with mineral wool in the walls and roof, and have a ground lever floor of reinforced concrete on a layer of expanded polystyrene. The passive house has, compared to the TEK07 house a different foundation, 15 cm more mineral wool in the outer walls, 5 cm more in the roof, and better insulated windows and doors. In addition, the thermal conductivity for the outer wall insulation is reduced for the passive house. The house life cycle is divided into several phases. Construction of the house, waste treatment of materials connected to the construction, surface finish and maintenance of the house during the lifetime, water and electrical energy consumption during the house operation and finally demolition and waste treatment of the materials after the end of the house lifetime. Transportation of workers and materials to the construction site, as well as to waste treatment plant, are included. Generic data from Ecoinvent 2.0 database is used, but some processes are modified to satisfy Norwegian production information. The Nordel electricity mix is used for Norwegian production and house electricity consumption. SimaPro 7.1.8 is used to process the data, and the ReCiPe method, hierarchist midpoint version 1.03 is used for the impact assessment. It is assumed that both houses have the same heating system, and cover 100% of the energy needs from electrical energy. For the 50 year life cycle, the passive house has 20% less impacts to climate change than the TEK07 house. For the other categories assessed, the passive house has between 10-20% lower impacts than the TEK07 house. The only exception is impacts to freshwater ecotoxicity, where the passive house impacts are increased with 7% from the TEK07 house. The TEK07 house has impacts to climate change with 1,6 tons CO2 eq/m2 useful floor, while the passive house 1,3 tons CO2 eq/m2 useful floor. Cumulative energy demand is 55 GJ/m2 and 42 GJ/m2 respectively. The construction phase is responsible for 13%, waste treatment of materials connected to construction 1%, surface finish and maintenance 6% and end of life waste treatment 4% of overall climate change impacts for the TEK07 house. Water and electricity consumption during the operation are thus responsible of 76% of the TEK07 life cycle climate change impacts. For the passive house, this is 19%, 1%, 7%, 6% and 67% respectively. Main activities contributing to the overall impacts are transportation of materials, workers and waste to and from the construction site, diesel combusted in building machines, production and incineration of EPS/XPS and paint, waste treatment of wood ash, and production of cement and ceramic tiles.A sensitivity analysis of energy consumed by the construction dryer, frequency of house maintenance, a change of house consumption electricity mix to the Norwegian and UCTE electricity mix, and a change to different heating systems for both houses is carried out.The overall conclusion is that it is environmentally beneficial to build, operate and waste treat a passive house compared to a house following the TEK07 building standard.
