Abstract:
RESUMENEl objetivo de este artículo es reflexionar sobre los mecanismos de financiación y de control de las instituciones religiosas por los laicos en las primeras décadas de la conquista y colonización de Hispanoamérica. Investigar sobre la inversión laica en lo sagrado supone en un primer lugar aclarar la historiografía sobre laicos, religión y dinero en las sociedades de Antiguo Régimen y su trasposición en América, planteando una mirada desde el punto de vista de las motivaciones múltiples de los actores seglares. A través del ejemplo de restituciones, donaciones y legados en losAndes, se explora el papel de los laicos españoles, y también de las poblaciones indígenas, en el establecimiento de la densa red de instituciones católicas que se construye entonces. La propuesta postula el protagonismo de actores laicos en la construcción de un espacio cristiano en los Andes peruanos en el siglo XVI y principios del XVII, donde la inversión económica permite contribuir a la transición de una sociedad de guerra y conquista a una sociedad corporativa pacificada.PALABRAS CLAVE: Hispanoamérica-Andes, religión, economía, encomienda, siglos XVI y XVII.ABSTRACTThis article aims to reflect on the mechanisms of financing and control of religious institutions by the laity in the first decades of the conquest and colonization of Spanish America. Investigating lay investment in the sacred sphere means first of all to clarifying historiography on laity, religion and money within Ancien Régime societies and their transposition to America, taking into account the multiple motivations of secular actors. The example of restitutions, donations and legacies inthe Andes enables us to explore the role of the Spanish laity and indigenous populations in the establishment of the dense network of Catholic institutions that was established during this period. The proposal postulates the role of lay actors in the construction of a Christian space in the Peruvian Andes in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, when economic investment contributed to the transition from a society of war and conquest to a pacified, corporate society.KEY WORDS: Hispanic America-Andes, religion, economics, encomienda, 16th and 17th centuries. Kenneth Livingston was born in 1914 in Pendleton, Oregon. He attended Stanford University and obtained his BA in 1936. His medical student days were spent at Harvard where he graduated MD in 1939.His neurosurgical education began in 1942 at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, N.Y.; then, after two years at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, California, he was appointed to the Attending Staff at the Lahey Clinic in Boston from 1946-1948. He returned to Oregon as Assistant Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Oregon Medical School in 1948.

Abstract:
The construction of an expected value decision model for selecting seismic retrofit schemes for a historic building is demonstrated through a case study. Net Present Costs (NPC) are used to rank the retrofit options. NPC is defined as the sum of the initial investment cost and the present expected value of the total future damage costs. Four options are assumed to be proposed to upgrade the Stanford Memorial Church in 1980. Option 1 is to do nothing in terms of seismic strengthening, whereas options 2 to 4 are seismic strengthening the Church with increasing level of safety and costs. Seismic data are selected to derive a set of earthquake probabilities. Damage probabilities and damage costs, including direct costs, indirect costs, and costs of life, are estimated. A discount rate and a life span are chosen to discount the future damage costs to present expected values. Option 3, strengthening the Church to building integrity standard without removing the unreinforced masomy (URM) walls, has the lowest NPC and is considered as the optimal option. If it had been recommended and adopted in 1980, about 40% of the accumulative expense from 1980 to 1990 would have been saved. A sensitivity analysis is carried out in order to determine the importance of variables that are only crudely estimated. In general, the outcome is insensitive to changes in seismic data, damage costs, discount rates and life spans when the changes are within reasonable ranges. To obtain higher accuracy, attention should be paid to estimating the probabilities and damage costs of moderate to large earthquakes (MIvil V to IX) rather than that of great earthquakes (MIvil X and above). The outcome is sensitive to the expected reduction in damage due to retrofits. Better methods for predicting structural behavior is needed. More research in developing guidelines for estimating future damages and social impacts is recommended.

This chapter examines how, on December 23, 1891, Anna Botsford and John Henry Comstock left Ithaca for Stanford University. Henry had very enthusiastic and fine students in all his classes. Meanwhile, Anna gave a lecture on wood engraving, as she had her work with her and plenty of illustrative material. It was her first university lecture and she was gratified at the interest in the art which she aroused. The Comstocks left Stanford at the end of the semester and returned to Cornell University in Ithaca. The chapter then looks at the publication of the Wilder Quarter Century Book in 1893, a memorial to Dr. Burt G. Wilder for his twenty-five years of teaching at Cornell, and the permanent establishment of the Comstock Publishing Company.

England left Stanford to accept a position at the Lutheran college St Olaf as an administrator. Proudly professing his LDS faith, he encountered conflict with colleagues. At the same time, England was called to preside over a Mormon congregation as branch president, which shaped his future preoccupation with pastoral care. England transferred to a teaching position at St Olaf, but failing to receive tenure, applied to Brigham Young University. He failed there, too, but found partial employment at the Church Historical Department and teaching institute again.

A biographical sketch introduces the people and events that shaped England’s work and thought. England spent his young boyhood on a farm in Downey, Idaho. His capacity for friendship and the sheer number of people who felt close to him suggest the deep charisma that underlay his thought. His undergraduate years at the University of Utah and his relationship with Lowell Bennion mark the beginnings of his public thinking about Mormonism. He earned a PhD in English at Stanford, while trying to reconcile his conservative religious and liberal political convictions. He was particularly troubled by the LDS church’s racist policy of withholding priesthood from Black men. Most of England’s career was spent teaching at Brigham Young University, where he was popular with students, but clashed with university administrators and LDS church officials. England’s work exemplifies an important engagement of Mormon theology with liberal Christian thought.

Tom Webster grew up in London and lived there for twenty years in middle and later life, when he was Professor of Greek in the University at University College, the scene of much of his most fruitful work. For seventeen years before that, he was Hulme Professor of Greek at Manchester, taking up his appointment at the age of twenty-six, as the University recalled with pride and affection when it made him, in 1965, an honorary Doctor of Letters. He began his academic career with eight years (mainly) at Oxford, as an undergraduate and then a young don at Christ Church, with a fruitful interlude at Leipzig; he ended it with six years at Stanford, as Professor of Classics and then Emeritus. At and after the end of the First World War he was a schoolboy at Charterhouse; during the Second World War he served as an officer in Military Intelligence.
