Full textSötvatten är en naturlig källa för atmosfärisk metangas. Gasen som bland annat bildasi sjöar och vattendrags sediment stiger upp genom vattenfasen via bubblor och diffusion och når därigenom atmosfären. Metangasen fungerar i atmosfären som en växthusgas då den inverkar på vårt klimat och är den gas som näst efter koldioxid bidragit mest till de sentida förändringara av den naturliga växthuseffekten. Förändringarna orsakas av att de klimatpåverkande gaserna ökar i atmosfären och som följd bidrar till en så kallad förstärkt växhuseffekt med globala temperaturökningar som följd.
I denna studie har metanemissioner till atmosfären undersökts från vattendrag, nämligen Stångån, som rinner genom Östergötland och mynnar ut i sjön Roxen. Anledning till att ett vattendrag valdes beror på att de är relativt outforskade när det gäller metanförekomst. Fem provplatser valdes ut på en sträcka av ca 15 km och undersökningen utfördes genom att tre flytkammare förankrades på vattenytan vid varje provplats. Den generella principen innebär att flytkamrarna fångar upp den transporterande gasen från vattenfasen och som sedan tas upp ur flytkammaren med hjälp av en spruta. Den uppsamlade gasen analyserades sedan genom gaskromatografi där metoden syftar till att separera komponenter för kvantifiering. Övriga ekologiska faktorer som undersöktes var mängd organiskt material i sedimenten, absorbans och ytvattenhastighet. Temperatur, pH och lufttryck kontrollerades kontinuerligt under provtagningarna.
Resultatet påvisade att metanemissioner förekom längs hela provsträckan både genom diffusion och via bubblor. Vattendraget var också övermättat med metan i jämförelse med atmosfären. Stora lokala variationer kunde konstateras samt att en av provplatserna skiljde sig markant från de övriga både när det gällde metanflöde och övriga ekologiska faktorer. Den statistiska analysen visade att absorbans och ytflödeshastighet var de enda ekologiska faktorer som hade ett samband med metanflödet.
Jag anser mot bakgrund av teori och redovisade resulat i denna studie att det kan vara värdefullt med utökade mätningar av metanemissioner i vattendrag. Studien har påvisat att naturlig metanproduktion och flöde förekommer i hela den undersökta sträckan i Stångån och kan därför vara en källa till den idag förhöjda metanhalten i atmosfären. Ett varmare klimat kan i sin tur leda till en acceleration av metanproduktion och som följd ytterligare emissioner till atmosfären som kan leda till ännu större klimatförändringar. På så sätt kan denna undersökning bidra med kunskap om ett komplxt problem som kan öka lokalt, regionalt och globalt.

Full textKallerstad landfill was in use between 1950 and 1973. Nonetheless, assessment of closed landfills and their risk to the environment and health is required. Firstly, the levels of zinc, nickel, arsenic, copper, ammonia, TOT-N and TOC in the surface water of the main recipient Kallerstadsdiket, were compared to cut-off levels given by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management. Then, the direct contribution of Kallerstad landfill to the contamination level was estimated. Finally, the contamination load that flows from Kallerstadsdiket to Stångån, which is a second recipient with high natural value, was estimated. Zinc, nickel and copper showed low levels and low risk at all sampling stations. Ammonia and arsenic showed higher levels and a potential risk of adverse effects. As a result, the surface water in Kallerstadsdiket could not be classified to reach ‘good’ status, although the direct role that Kallerstad landfill plays is doubtful. Calculations suggest that Kallerstad landfill does add arsenic and TOC to the contamination levels, although in small amounts. The risk of spread of contaminants to Stångån was estimated to be low. The additional contamination levels stemming from Kallerstadsdiket are lower than the levels measured in Stångån. The dilution factor was estimated to be 1:320. Nevertheless, the current study has many uncertainties that are mainly related to data availability. It is therefore recommended to apply a more complete sampling scheme with the appropriate parameters (e.g., pH, DOC, Ca, and temperature) in all sampling stations. Ideally it would be plausible to sample every week for a period of a year and then reassess the risk, as well as to get a more reliable approximation of the contribution of the landfill itself.

Full textMicrobial decomposition of organic matter in aquatic environments plays an important role in natural fluxes of methane and carbon dioxide because the gases are end-products in microbial energy metabolism of organic matter. Microbial metabolism depends on the use of electron donors and electron acceptors in redox reactions that generate energy for growth and maintenance. Energy yields can be used to envisage specific patterns of microbial redox reactions and these predictions depend on the hypothesis that, in a specified environment, the metabolic reaction that yields most energy will dominate over any competing reactions. The energy yield hypothesis indicates a sequential order in electron acceptor use by microbes and also make it tempting to conclude that degradation rate of organic matter is different depending on available electron acceptors. The main purpose of this thesis was to study how the presences of different electron acceptors in freshwater sediments influence organic matter decomposition. Mineralization rates of organic matter under six different conditions regarding the electron acceptor availability were investigated in a river sediment sample from Stångån, Sweden, by measuring carbon dioxide and methane production using gas chromatography. This was done during a fixed time period, in vials containing a mixture of water, sediment, buffer solution and a dominating electron acceptor. Six different metabolic processes; aerobic respiration, denitrification, manganese reduction, iron reduction, sulphate reduction and methanogenesis were included. The overall result indicates similar mineralization rates in both oxic and anoxic treatments. The result also indicates that methane formation was present in the iron reduction and methanogenesis treatments and not evident in the oxic treatments. Sulphate reduction, denitrification and manganese reduction seems to inhibit methanogenesis, but the result also indicates that no significant total mineralization was apparent when NO3- and Mn(IV) were the dominating electron acceptors. The similarities between oxic and anoxic mineralization rates indicates that organic matter degradation rates are not dependent on available electron acceptors and that degradation rates of organic matter are independent of the thermodynamically based energy yield.

Full textMany everyday tasks and also many sports require good grip and forearm strength. Everything from carrying boxes and lifting a child to grab the arms and legs in various martial arts, or holding a tennis racket involving the hand and forearm muscles in various ways. It is therefore important to train these muscles to prevent injuries and congestion and to perform well in sport. A well known way to train functional strength in the hand and forearm muscles is weight training with thick handles. The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in muscle activity in the upper arm and forearm muscles as well as the deltoids between two bars of different diameter (28mm and 57mm) in two different weight training exercises using electromyography (EMG). The weight training exercises consisted of a pulling exercise in the form of a bench row and a pressing exercise in the form of close-grip bench press. The study also examines whether there is a connection between hand strength and muscle activity, and if there is any connection between hand size and muscle activity. Results show that muscle activity between the thick bars remained unchanged in the close-grip bench press. In the bench row exercise, however, significant increases were seen in the forearm flexors and m. biceps brachii while lifting the thicker bar. The forearm extensors showed an indication of muscle activity increases while lifting the thicker bar. However, there was no connection between hand strength and muscle activity and no correlation between hand size and muscle activity. The conclusion is that the pulling exercise with the thicker bar results in higher muscle activity in comparison to a standard Olympic bar in several muscles involved, not just those directly affected by the thicker bar.

Full textTo be able to withstand competition in a more competitive market, it requires a good delivery service and to deliver the right amount of material at the right time. Erasteel in Söderfors are working to achieve their set goal of 90 % for their OTIF on delivery safety. The purpose of the thesis was to map the planning and manufacturing process with the starting point to find the causes that cause deviations in the weight delivered to the customer. The goal was to identify the main causes for the deviations of the weight and to deliver a proposal on how the process could be improved to enhance the delivery of safety. An analytical model was created. It consisted of operations as mapping, data collection, analysis of the collected data and improvements were created. A hierarchical mapping was done of the entire process, from planning to delivery, and a detailed study was made in order to identify possible causes of deviant delivered weight. Data were collected from different parts of the process, mainly deviations from tolerance and scrap reasons. To identify the dimension intervals and steel grades that deviated most from In-Full, a chart was created in Minitab. There, all the values of tolerance were set up and compared for all diameter intervals. To pass In-Full, the values must be within ±10% and the other parameters below -10% or above 10% tolerance. The same type of graph was created for all steel grades. The result of the charts was that three (3) different diameter intervals, were selected and six (6) steel grades. Pareto charts were created in order to identify the most common causes of scrap. The diagrams showed that the planned scrap from the process, account for a large part of weight loss for all diameters studied closer. Scrapping due to the length requirements and crooked materials had a significant impact on the amount of scrap. Noteworthy was that the scatter plot, for one of the diameter interval, gave a blade-like profile, when delivered weight was compared to Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ (). That indicates that the yields, used for the different operations, are probably not up to date. One of the reasons that one of the diameter interval differ, can be due to difficulties when the capsule is divided in three. There are some uncertainties in the analysis because the values and weights that were analyzed are based on theoretical weights. This means that follow-up in a proper manner cannot be performed and therefore it becomes difficult to identify areas for improvement.

Full textHaving a stable spread is important in order to obtain accurate dimensions when rolling high-quality steel bars. This thesis describes an attempt to design a simple but adequate active system to reduce the spread variations at Fundia’s mid-section mill in Boxholm, Sweden. Introducing closed loop control is far too complex to be considered in this case, and thus we are forced to use an open loop approach. From the available literature, it is obvious that temperature is the single most important aspect to take into account. However, the literature does not provide the means to accurately enough determine how temperature variations will affect spread in our specific situation. Instead, we have to depend on an investigation. Fortunately, this investigation showed that the width disturbance is approximately proportional to the temperature throughout the interesting interval. This enables us to base the system on a “compensation factor”, set by the operator. Such a control system was then designed, installed, and tested, showing very promising results.
