Full textThe novels of S. I. Witkiewicz have received, in the polish critical tradition, an ambiguous status: that of major but imperfect, both modern and anachronic works. This works undertakes to show that Witkiewicz's novels are coherent works, in which an original form conveys a peculiar experience of the world, similar to the experience which underlies the works of European novelists who have, at the same time, challenged the traditional conception of narrative (Proust, Musil, Mann, V. Woolf, Joyce. . . ) and whom the English-language critics gather as "modernists". The comparatist approach makes it possible to show that Witkiewicz's novels spring from a similar apprehension of the first decades of the XXth century, seen as a turning point, carried by dynamics with a still unknown meaning, which sweep away thinking schemes and systems of values; it is then important to find elsewhere the coherence which has definitely deserted the reality. For Witkiewicz's heroes, philosophy might be that last entrenchment of unity, and all of them search for a way of turning their confused living into a rigorous chain of concepts, which is however impossible because the language is not sufficient for this task. A breach is therefore open for plays on words and concepts, which make the originality of Witkiewicz's writing and guarantee the success of his Romanesque enterprise

The research examines the literary and philosophical work of Stanislaw Lem in correspondence with the theoretical perspective of the Frankfurt School, in order to evidence the different affinities between the Science Fiction (SF) literature proposed by the author and the postulates of Critical Theory. Convergences not only of thematic order, since in the main findings of the study it is argued that they share the establishment of a common objective, the configuration of their own methodology, the development of a content, a style and a certain praxis. Proposals that, accordingly, are located in the convulsive sociopolitical context of Central and Eastern Europe in the midst of the postwar period, at the height of totalitarianism, characteristics that, when combined, make them unique in comparison with other models of thought. In this way, Lem's fiction, as well as Critical Theory, are understood as a genre in themselves, of a speculative nature, due to their intrinsic nature that escapes simple labels. In the first place, in terms of objective, they sought to consolidate a position of provocation and disobedience against the patterns of modern thought, marked by the empirical, analytical and positivist tendency of Western thought. With this, they founded a heterogeneous, interdisciplinary, critical, open to contradictions, of permanent refutations, dynamic, with differentiating elements that positioned them as a genre of their own, singular against other theoretical bets. They are above all a critique of advanced capitalist society, of totalizing ideological molds, their purpose is emancipatory and they aspire to the self-realization of man. In the methodological aspect, they are highly speculative, this character constitutes an essential element of their practical reason and, consequently, of their methodology. In this way, Critical Theory and Stanislaw's CF, are constituted as an interdisciplinary effort to found two complementary projects, the first aspires to develop an integral social theory that can face the social and political problems resulting from capitalism and the second becomes an aesthetic bet to think these same conflicts of socio-political order in different fictional scenarios, thus making it possible to rethink reality itself from a natural extrapolation. With this, we seek to manifest the emergence of a new perspective to study the writer's aesthetic wager, innovative in the context of current literary studies, which is enunciated in the study as a Critical Lemology. Thus, the doctoral thesis is an approach to the configuration of a new Lemology and manages to establish the first foundations in its theoretical and practical status. It was determined, based on the exhaustive documentary findings, that the predominant Lemological typologies on the analysis of Stanislaw's narrative and philosophical project, developed between 1965 and 2017, namely: Descriptive Lemology, Analytical Lemology, Comparative-Predictive Lemology, Applied Lemology, fail to dimension his socio-political proposal, moreover they elude the genuine project and the original approach of the writer, by eluding a key aspect that unifies and enriches the different looks. This is based on the author's interest in an interdisciplinary CF literature, with an emancipatory vocation, in dialogue with Western critical Marxism, an analogous disposition of the Frankfurt School. To reach this conclusion, it was necessary to analyze the theoretical perspective of this School, which due to its global and heterogeneous character was delimited to an approach -given the complexity and extension that its study requires- in five key qualitative approaches: sociopolitical, psychosocial, sociocultural, anthropological and communicative. In short, a new theoretical and practical perspective is established to study Stanislaw's work, enunciated as a Critical Lemology, which will be developed by new researchers interested in the Polish author's proposal.

Full textMy project is underwritten by the epistemological assumption that literary works, and notably works of fiction, can make a contribution to knowledge that can be assessed in terms of interdisciplinary criteria. In the first chapter, where I discuss literature and knowledge within the interdisciplinary context, I examine various epistemological arguments in light of my central assertion. Next I examine the concepts involved in the discussion of literary works. Following the pragmatic re-orientation in literary and philosophical aesthetics, many fundamental concepts we take for granted--artworks, fictions, and texts among them--require exact re-examination and definition. Consequently, in Chapters Two and Three I review and refine the recent theories concerning the nature of works of art, the specificity of literary fictions, and the problem of literary interpretations.
My subsequent discussion of Poe and Lem is built on the theoretical base of (literary) epistemology and analytical aesthetics. I study Poe and Lem's literary fictions and theoretical essays, and the contributions they make to various fields of inquiry. In the process I critique, and sometimes refine, the explicit and implicit hypotheses articulated in their works. Specifically In Chapters Four and Five I discuss strategic and game theoretic models in the interpretation of fiction, including the concepts of communication and rationality. In Chapter Six, completing the epistemological circle inaugurated in Chapter One, I discuss the epistemological and cosmological theories proposed in Poe's "Eureka".

Full textWitkiewicz is the author of a work very varied, theater, essays, novels, philosophical works, painting and even photography. His theatrical work set oo many features of grotesque style at the service of a world conception essentially tragic. Contemporary of several artistic and literary movements, loomed up on the horizon of the first third of twentieth century, he mistrusts them owing to intuitionnism and irrationalism that he detects in them. The dramatis personae of his plays as the themes of his dramatic art are often recurrents. The language employed refers to the most varied levels. His plys consist of many dramatis personae always describe meticulously in sizeable didascalies. His plays are very often performed in his country but they have an enough weak impact in occident. What are the reasons of that? an analysis of the performances of his plays in poland, on the one hand and in the countries of french expression, on the other hand can allow to answer. A theatrical practice of witkiewicz permits to specify the conditions of success of his dramas. In annex, an attempt to put on stage: "a crazy locomotive", the construction of a play: "the island of satan" from two published fragments, an example of reading about "the shoemakers" as a detailed analysis of of a scene of this play and at last the problems created by the translation of a play never published in france but performed in paris in 1986: "miss tootlie-pootlie", allow, i hope so, to delimit more closely, this work inherently pessimistic

Full textThe main subject of this thesis is a case study of Polish cinematographic production under the communist period in the 1970's called TOR (Kieslowski, Zanussi, Rozewicz). This research points out the author-filmmaker's creative autonomy confronted to the Cultural Policy upheavals which have determined film production in a non - democratic country : Polish People's Republic in the 1970s. The TOR filmography is homogeneous and its movies transmit the author-filmmaker's point of view about the existential and moral matters while the individual occupies the central place. How was it possible to produce films focused on the individual in a country where the political class and its collective policy occupied the central place?

Full textThe relationships between Church and Nationalism are the subject of the studies presented in the thesis. We talk about the Roman Catholic Church in its particular dimension. The Nationalism concerns all the patriotic and national feelings which allow a nation to define and distinguish itself from other nations. Roman Catholic Church was part of the Polish nation since its baptism in 966 and, during centuries, the correlation between both evolved to become a specific and unique coexistence. The Church and the Polish nation were sometimes very close, talking with one voice. Sometimes this merger was not complete, the mutual interests were different and the nationalism in the nation took a different direction from that wanted by the Church. The thesis was divided in three main parts: The first part relates to the birth of the contemporary Polish Nation. The revival of Poland after the First World War in 1918 completely modified the way of seeing the nationalism as an ideology and the nationalism as the feelings fashioning the nation. It was necessary to evoke the main representatives of the Polish nationalism as well as their commitment in the creation of the Polish nation. The names of Roman Dmowski and Joseph Pilsudski were mentioned several times as these two characters strongly influenced the nationalism and the nation itself. The part relating to the development of the national idea before and after the first World War was very important because it explains how the nation deprived of its independence during decades succeeded in creating its proper nationalism that left a deep impression behind Polish intellectual minds after 1989. The name of one of the main nationalists in Poland - Roman Dmowski - was compared to the other spirit glittering with the time - Charles Maurras. The comparison was evident for two reasons : point out the differences between the nationalism in Poland compared to the nationalist movement in Europe and insist on the likeness of the two very close characters : people who showed a new way to nationalist ideas in their countries for decades. The study on the Church and the Nationalism may not be completed without a wide reflexion on the socialist era in Poland between 1945 and1989. The Poles and the Catholicism had a very close relationship at that time. For the Church and for the Nation, Socialism in Poland was considered as mind trial, identity and moral responsibility. The Church and behind her the Episcopate was one of the main characters of the events over the years 1945-1989. The character of the polish catholicism together with its role in polish society were defined. At that time Poleswere facing a precarious way of living. However, they found in their faith deeply rooted in the culture and the traditions the way to get out of it. Thanks to Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński or Cardinal Karol Wojtyła (John Paul II ) the Polish Church strengthened its position in the socialist reality by preserving the moral foundation of the nation. However both the Church and the Nation were subject to major transformations following changes in the system after 1989. They had to get together and face the new liberal democracy system while preserving their union. The difficulties bound with the transformation of the system, the chaos of the first years of the democracy in Poland as well as the modifications of the Polish mentality are the subject of the third part of this thesis. The Church before and after 1989 is no more the same. The nation is no more the same. A lot changes occured event if, from the outside, the behavior of the Poles towards the Roman Catholic Church remains the same. The Polish religion is one of the most fervent in the world but the role of the Church and the Catholicism considerably changed during the last twenty years. The changes are more remarkable in the Polish way of life. It is not enough to look at what evolved by following the statistics concerning religiosity but it is necessary to observe what happens in the culture, in the media to be able to answer the question: where is the union between the Roman Catholic Church and the Nationalism today? The Thesis also contains statistics that show not only the processing within the Polish society but also the factors which influence the changes in the perception of the religion at the Poles, as for example, the job, the age, the place of living, etc… According to the author, it was preferable to add some historic boards representing in an evident way the connection between the Poles and their faith. These works only represent a small part of the inheritance of Poland, inheritance where the Catholicism outstandingly established its position. Some subjects were not approached in the text. It concerns problems of antisemitism in Poland before the Second World War and the study of the role of John- Paul II in the establishment of democracy in Poland. For what concerns the Polish anti-semitism, the question is somehow complex and very tough, far enough not to constitute the main subject of the doctoral thesis. To carry out the study would risk to go away from the general subject of the thesis and fail to reach the heart of the discussion. Some of the arguments mentioned above concern John-Paul II. Studying the life and the work of such a character is useful if you don’t make an analysis of his ecclesiastical texts. The researches were not essential for the main subject of the thesis and could have cloud the object over which the text was concentrated – the Church and the Polish Nationalism, the relation between both which oscillates between merger and interaction

Full textThis thesis is a corpus centred round jules verne's voyages extraordinaires and its coherence is meant to be psychothematic : travelling is seen as an exploration of death, and writing as an imaginary journey. Thus, travelling is not merely a dream of exhausting what a map of the world may offer, but also a dream of utopias : the utopias of the extraneous, of love, of the future, of a harmony between nature and society - such utopias are forced into the para- doxical exorcism which the various counter-utopias have formed: a moral evil explored by detective of fantastic narratives, a political evil seen as a repre- hension of desires and as the oppression inflicted by history- meanwhile science-fiction tries to see through a hazardous future. Hence our preference for the various aspects of the literature of limits, which, aware that the world is only our weltanschaaumg, is quite heedless of the rules of a reducing pseudo-realism. Therefore, the wonderful, the fantastic, science-fiction, utopias and counter-utopias, poetry and the exploration of death are as many ways of expressing not the preposterousness but the infinite significance of the world. Let transcendency begin with writing, such was, perhaps, our clew, from the first to the last of these texts
