Abstract:
Musical motifs in Stanisław Witkiewicz’s Tatra proseThe musicality of Stanisław Witkiewicz’s Tatra prose has so far not been studied by scholars in any detail. Following Andrzej Hejmej’s findings, the present author focuses first on musicality I, i.e. the sound layer of the text, in which ahuge role is played by extensive quotations in dialect as well as fragments of songs. This reveals one of the key principles governing Witkiewicz’s text – the principle of contrast. Next, the author examines musicality II, i.e. the level of thematisation of music. Here of considerable importance are sound images of nature, silence as well as murmur of streams, sounds of wind and stone echoes, and even of fire. The expression Witkiewicz uses here is “great music of nature”. Just as often Witkiewicz refers to highlanders’ music, especially Sabała’s playing, though it is treated more like aform of archaic, wild expression than original aesthetic quality.

Abstract:
Stanisław Witkiewicz (1851-1915) himself taught his son Stanisław Ignacy (1885-1939), known later as Witkacy, helped by his wife and friends, among whom there were scientists, artists and professional teachers. The results of such education were amazing. At the age of eight, the boy could paint using different techniques, play the piano and compose music. His father desired for him to become a naturalist painter like himself. At a young age Witkacy became an outstanding artist, not only a painter, but also a writer. However, in opposition to his father’s teaching, when he matured artistically, he rejected naturalism and joined the artistic avant-garde. Just after the first world war he published a long philosophical essay inspired probably by the work of his father’s great intellectual enemy – the Neo-Hegelian Polish philosopher Henryk Struve. Thus, Witkacy shaped himself, both in the respect of art and philosophy, in the opposition to his father, Stanisław Witkiewicz.

Abstract:
Summary This article is concerned with the role of the literary and the photographic portrait in the cultural history of literature. It argues that a new appraisal of the history of literature should take into account the prominent role of pictorial representation in contemporary culture. In practice, getting to grips with the multimediality of literary history means not only taking note of the interaction of various modes of communication but also adopting a nonlinear perspective, liberated from the ordering hegemony of language and narration, and based on the rhythm of Warburg’s formulas of pathos. The new approach should draw freely on inspirations from the history of art and anchor its discourse in the conceptual frameworks of anthropological aesthetics, Visual Culture Studies and case studies. One can expect that it would show its exceptional worth when applied to the study of multimedia artists like Stanisław Witkiewicz and Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Witkiewicz is the author of a work very varied, theater, essays, novels, philosophical works, painting and even photography. His theatrical work set oo many features of grotesque style at the service of a world conception essentially tragic. Contemporary of several artistic and literary movements, loomed up on the horizon of the first third of twentieth century, he mistrusts them owing to intuitionnism and irrationalism that he detects in them. The dramatis personae of his plays as the themes of his dramatic art are often recurrents. The language employed refers to the most varied levels. His plys consist of many dramatis personae always describe meticulously in sizeable didascalies. His plays are very often performed in his country but they have an enough weak impact in occident. What are the reasons of that? an analysis of the performances of his plays in poland, on the one hand and in the countries of french expression, on the other hand can allow to answer. A theatrical practice of witkiewicz permits to specify the conditions of success of his dramas. In annex, an attempt to put on stage: "a crazy locomotive", the construction of a play: "the island of satan" from two published fragments, an example of reading about "the shoemakers" as a detailed analysis of of a scene of this play and at last the problems created by the translation of a play never published in france but performed in paris in 1986: "miss tootlie-pootlie", allow, i hope so, to delimit more closely, this work inherently pessimistic

Abstract:
The novels of S. I. Witkiewicz have received, in the polish critical tradition, an ambiguous status: that of major but imperfect, both modern and anachronic works. This works undertakes to show that Witkiewicz's novels are coherent works, in which an original form conveys a peculiar experience of the world, similar to the experience which underlies the works of European novelists who have, at the same time, challenged the traditional conception of narrative (Proust, Musil, Mann, V. Woolf, Joyce. . . ) and whom the English-language critics gather as "modernists". The comparatist approach makes it possible to show that Witkiewicz's novels spring from a similar apprehension of the first decades of the XXth century, seen as a turning point, carried by dynamics with a still unknown meaning, which sweep away thinking schemes and systems of values; it is then important to find elsewhere the coherence which has definitely deserted the reality. For Witkiewicz's heroes, philosophy might be that last entrenchment of unity, and all of them search for a way of turning their confused living into a rigorous chain of concepts, which is however impossible because the language is not sufficient for this task. A breach is therefore open for plays on words and concepts, which make the originality of Witkiewicz's writing and guarantee the success of his Romanesque enterprise

Abstract:
This thesis explores ways in which the reality of Kantor’s existence at a key moment in occupied Kraków may be read as directly informing the genesis and development of his artistic strategies. It argues for a particular ontological understanding of human being that resonates strongly with that implied by Kantor in his work and writings. Most approaches to Kantor have either operated from within a native perspective that assumes familiarity with Polish culture and its influences, or, from an Anglo-American theatre-history perspective that has tended to focus on his larger-scale performance work. This has meant that contextual factors informing Kantor’s work as a whole, including his happenings, paintings, and writings, as well as his theatrical works, have remained under-explored. The thesis takes a Heideggerian-hermeneutic approach that foregrounds biographical, cultural and aesthetic contexts specific to Kantor, but seemingly alien to Anglo-American experience. Kantor’s work is approached from Heideggerian and post-Heideggerian perspectives that read the work as a world-forming response to these contexts. Read in this way, key writings, art and performance works by Kantor are revealed to be explorations of existence and human being. Traditional ontological distinctions between process and product, painting and performance, are problematised through the critique of representation that these works and working practices propose. Kantor is revealed as a metaphysical artist whose work stands as a testament to a Heideggerian view of human being as a ‘positive negative’: a ‘placeholder of nothing’, but a ‘nothing’ that yet ‘is’ …

Polanowska, Beata. "Reading philosophy through literature : a study of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz's novels "Farewell to autumn" and "Insatiability" and his metaphysical categories from a perspective of the philosophical work of Søren Kierkegaard." Abstract:
My thesis develops along several themes. I begin by looking at the relationship between literature and philosophy. I then study Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz's novels Farewell to Autumn and Insatiability, and his metaphysical categories from the perspective ofthe philosophical writing of Soren Kierkegaard. The first theme explores the question of the fusion of literature and philosophy and establishes a theoretical background for the analysis of novels through a philosophical perspective. It also provides an explanation for my choice of the hermeneutic methodology for the analysis I undertake in my thesis. The main aim of my thesis is the analysis of Witkiewicz's novels through the application of Kierkegaardian concepts. Referring to Kierkegaard's philosophy places my analysis in the domain of existentialism. I explore his concept of irony, as introduced in The Concept of Irony, and treat it not merely as a rhetorical figure but as a particular existential stance which accepts that human existence extends beyond the `here and now'. I provide an elaboration ofthe philosophical nature of Kierkegaardian irony when I explore his understanding of existence as being a process of continuous becoming in the quest for knowledge, as portrayed in The Concept of Anxiety. Subsequently, I employ Kierkegaardian philosophical irony in the analysis of Witkiewicz's work. Initially, I refer Kierkegaard's concepts to Witkiewicz's metaphysical categories and by so doing emphasize their existential character. I then employ them in the analysis of Witkiewicz's novels as I treat his narratives as a realisation of existential themes. I study the way the existential nature of Farewell to Autumn and Insatiability is manifested. The model of Kierkegaardian irony enables me to treat Witkiewicz's playfulness as a particular expression of an ironical stance. I study the variety of forms his playfulness takes. I look at the way it has been expressed in the development of his fictional world and through the language and style of the narrative, which together create the overall impression that Witkiewicz's narratives constitute a particular playful communication between the author and reader. I also indicate that this playfulness accompanies, or is an expression of, deep concern for the most fundamental questions about human existence. I indicate the direct and indirect presence of existential reflections in the text. As a result I demonstrate that Witkiewicz's novels constitute a playful, ironical expression of profoundly existential reflections about human existence, and in this way, encompass his own quest for meaning.

Abstract:
1 English Abstract Searching for Styles of National Architecture in Habsburg Central Europe 1890-1920 Art Nouveau and Turn-of-the-Century Architecture as Nation-Building This thesis examines aspirations of Central European nations to create architectural style, which would be particular to the given nation and would convey national spirit and character through architectural form. Inspired by social and cultural history, historians of architecture have recently begun to study conscious efforts of national elites to use architecture for nationalistic ends. Considerable attention has been paid to the interplay between national movements emerging in Europe before the World War I, and the concurrent developments in the field of architecture as signified by introduction of the Art Nouveau. However, most of these works focus on individual national building movement. Building on the existing set of studies developed in different national contexts, this thesis takes a step further and approaches the issue from the transnational perspective Applying the comparative history methodology to the three cases studies - Hungarian, Czech and Polish, all non-German ethnic groups in the Austro- Hungarian Monarchy - enables close examination of the intertwined development of modern nations and architecture. By the turn of the...
