Abstract:

Background

Strategic alliances have become increasingly popular within the business world, they can be seen as a way to improve the total output of the firm. Over the last 10 years, the industry endured trying times, the most notable being the events of September 11, 2001. That event drastically changed airline traveling all across the world. It also showed the importance of collaborations in order to stay competitive. Star Alliance began in 1997 and has since then grown into

the world’s largest airline alliance with a total market share of 25.1%.

Purpose

The raison d’être of this study is to quantify and analyze the augmentation of load factors over time, in terms of distribution, as they pertain to capacity performance of allied carriers within Star Alliance.

Method

In order to fulfill the purpose, a deductive approach to the research has been taken. Furthermore, due to the nature of the data, a quantitative approach has been used within. Two hypotheses will be stated and several research questions as well.

Result

It can be clearly seen that distribution of load factors has transformed during the years. There is a shift in both the skewness and the kurtosis of the distributions that can be seen when examining the frequency distribution charts. The kurtosis increases and the skew decreases, measures that are positive for the airlines, while the anomalies of 0% and 100% load factor have remained stable throughout the years. A general increase in the average load factors has also been seen.

Conclusion

By analyzing the empirical findings, it is clear that the load factor of the allied members has increased and that the proportion of the denied boardings decreased in relation to the average load factor. This means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted in the first hypothesis and that the second alternative hypothesis was accepted in the second hypothesis. The research also reveals a generally increased mean which together with the changes in the skew and kurtosis lead to an acceptance of the beta distribution. Furthermore, higher load factors were shown to have a strong correlation with the increase in efficiency and decrease in overselling.

Abstract:
In order to rationalise operations and reduce costs, airlines have always celebrated operational agreements. As the world scenario becomes more competitive and turbulent, networks of strategic alliances become an effective and common tool for survival and excellence. The objective of this thesis is to pave the way for studies that verify the analysis of the strategic fit of companies in forming strategic blocks in the aviation industry by way of a case study of VARIG as a member of Star Alliance. Performance is also taken into consideration in the scope of the case study, as a dependent variable, so as to better assess the fit at issue. The study focuses on VARIG, the largest Latin American airline, and its association with Star Alliance, currently the greatest airline alliance. Several civil aviation organisations and associations, located in Brazil and world-wide, provide useful data banks for the research. With the help of a semi-structured questionnaire, the study also collected data regarding the perception of VARIGs main executives (those involved in Star Alliance activities) on the importance of alliances for VARIGs strategy. The study aims at analysing the strategic implications of VARIGs association in alliances for its businesses and strategies, using a new tool developed to carry out strategic analysis from a relational perspective.

Fatahian, Roshanak, and Jenny Fritze. "Vilka effekter har strategiska flygallianser på flygbolag? : En fallstudie av SAS." Thesis, Södertörn University College, School of Business Studies, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-453.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Joy-Johnson, Louise. "How do clients experience the alliance when working with the Mental Health Recovery Star in rehabilitation settings?" Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2016. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/14995/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Mental Health Recovery Star (MHRS) is a therapeutic tool and outcome measure, used widely in the UK and internationally for clients and keyworkers in mental health services to jointly assess and work towards client-centred recovery goals. As such it has been recognised as potentially offering a means of building a positive working alliance between clients and workers. The alliance is increasingly being highlighted as a key common factor across therapeutic models that may underpin positive clinical outcomes. This study employed Grounded Theory Methods to explore the alliance within the context of using the MHRS in rehabilitation mental health services. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with ten clients and four workers across three services. The findings are presented in a theoretical model that explains the core category that emerged from this study – “being engaged in working together towards improved wellbeing”. Working with the MHRS was seen to inform three particular alliance processes: collaborative working; negotiating new or shared perspectives; and motivation towards improved wellbeing. The findings also highlighted challenges that can hinder these processes when using the MHRS, calling for improvements in practices of negotiation and better support for workers. Further clinical implications alongside avenues for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
Background: Research suggests that forensic mental health services and staff can play an important role in the recognition and intervention with attachment-related behaviours to promote engagement and recovery. There is a lack of literature exploring whether the attachment needs of forensic service-users are recognised and, associations between attachment style and factors predictive of recovery. Aims: This study aimed to examine the extent to which service-users and keyworkers agree about service-users’ attachment and to identify whether attachment was associated with service attachment, working alliance, ward climate and recovery. Methods: Twenty-two service-users from low and medium secure forensic services, completed questionnaire measures of their attachment style, service attachment, working alliance, ward climate and experiences of recovery. Nineteen keyworkers completed measures of the service-users attachment style and working alliance. Results: There was strong agreement between service-users and staff for attachment anxiety (ICC=0.71) but poor agreement for attachment avoidance (ICC=0.39). Service attachment was associated with more positive perceptions of staff support (r=0.49) and avoidant attachment was associated with lower ratings of recovery (r=-0.51). Correlations between attachment style and service attachment, working alliance and ward climate were small and non-significant. Conclusions: A focus on staff training to support recognition of the nature and impact of avoidant attachment styles is indicated. The findings suggest that interventions to enhance staff - service-user relationships may be important for service attachment and indeed promotion of a recovery focused orientation amongst service-users high in avoidant attachment may improve wellbeing and outcomes.

Abstract:
In the past two decades, a need in forming strategic alliance has become increasingly important, especially for small companies. Likewise, airline alliances act as a vehicle for small carriers to obtain their superior position or to survive competition in a competitive international market where they do not appear to be a dominant player. In strategic alliances, the greater integration conveys greater benefits. However, the level of failure and success are varied among alliance members. This thesis was underpinned by the aim to conduct an in-depth study under the concept of organisational culture to reveal the key issues and barriers that appear to distort the ability of an organisation to foster success as well as to boost up its ability to obtain the benefits from the alliances to the maximum level. The empirical investigation employed a qualitative approach as a mechanism, driving this thesis through the process of research design, data collection, and data analysis. Using a single case study as a main technique, the case company of this thesis is Thai Airways. Data was collected through in-depth and semi-structured interviews. Data was analysed using thematic grouping and organised through NVIvo software. This thesis displayed the findings into two main themes. The first theme is associated with the activity to diagnose organisational culture, whereas the Competing Values Framework (CVF) was adopted as an initial framework. The main objectives are to develop a cultural profile for Thai Airways and to identify the key issues and barriers that distort the ability of Thai Airways to foster success. The key finding derived from this theme offered the identified problems and barriers derived from organisational culture. Using the Critical Success Factors (CSFs) method, the second theme is associated with the activity to identify the critical success factors for Thai Airways, deriving as a set of CSFs proposed to help enhance the ability of Thai Airways to obtain big firm's benefits. The outcome of this thesis could be considered as a new reference for the areas of organisational studies and the success of airlines, where the literature appears to be limited. More importantly, this thesis believed that the research journey offered an empirical experience reflecting a piece of organisational culture study in a non-Western context.

Abstract:
The aim is to describe how to build a foundation of resources in RBSUs by addressing the issues of access to and control on resources in order to understand this context and to further develop the language of RBSUs. The research lies in the interpretative field of inquiry. Abduction is used to combine empirical data with theoretical studies in order to try to investigate patterns that could give an understanding of the phenomena that is studied. Descriptive research approach using multiple-case study design is used. The first part of the theoretical frame of references explores existing theories on resources. This leads to RBSUs basic resources. The second part explores different means for accessing and controlling resources. The chosen approach is qualitative. Interviews have been conducted for data collection. Documents are gathered and analyzed to support the interviews. Following each stage of RBSUs development, it is described what resources are the most important ones to each RBSU and how they got access to and control over those resources. The major contribution is that RBSUs access and control their basic resources in different ways depending on the stage of the RBSU development. In addition, the findings describe and allow understanding how RBSUs‟ founders make their choices when it comes to build a foundation of resources in each of those stages.

The identification of the different factors impacting a software start-up company's decision to pursue an alliance, acquisition, IPO or venture capital to sustain growth is the main objective of this research study. First and foremost on a software start-up company's list of reasons to pursue and engage in alliances is to leverage the incumbent's tangible and intangible assets. Other factors impacting their decision to leverage alliances include the opportunity to enhance stability and profitability and the opportunity to acquire key customers. Another key factor that encourages start-up company alliance or strategic partnership formation is the need for the start-up company to establish platform leadership. Like the pursuit of alliances, foremost on a software start-up company's list of reasons to pursue and engage in acquisitions is to leverage the incumbent's or the acquirer's tangible and intangible assets. Other factors impacting their decision to get acquired include the boost such an acquisition will provide in helping them establish platform leadership. Acquisitions are also pursued by start-up companies when the founders want to exit. Start-up companies also pursue to get acquired to survive, when no other option are available. Lastly, they would opt to get acquired to penetrate new markets. Given optimal economic conditions, IPOs capture the best liquidity and valuation. It is advantageous versus getting acquired in that one gets to sustain growth while retaining control of the software start-up company. Software start-up companies seek venture capital funding for a number of factors. This includes getting help in business development, leveraging the VC network, obtaining a certification effect, diversifying net worth and reducing risk, and pursuing and engaging in alliances successfully.
(cont.) There is no one universal paradigm to help a software start-up company determine when it is best to pursue an alliance, an acquisition, an IPO or venture capital. A myriad of factors specific to one's situation impacts the decision to choose the right growth strategy. To make the most informed decision, the executive team must consider all these factors.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Water has been classified as an increasingly stress resource, according to the last World Water Development Report. Concerns about clean drinking water and water sanitation are also focal points of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Moreover, small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), as well as start-ups, are interested in water management innovation and reaching countries with difficult access. This project is motivated by a desire to identify and classify the challenges of reaching water-stressed regions or people living at the bottom of the pyramid (BOP) that are facing water scarcity as well as the aim to recognize approaches of how partnerships - strategic alliances, joint ventures, co-opetition, and buyer-supplier relationship - address some of those challenges. The importance of partnerships, their specific motives, and the assets and activities interchanged in each experience, have been examined through different interviews. By focusing attention on the relation between challenges, partnerships, and business model levels, this paper suggests that partnerships are essential to reach emerging markets, but not all of them are valuable at the earlier stages of a start-up. In addition, according to the challenges that are expected to address, a particular type of partnership should be established, which implies different adaptations in the business model. Therefore, the contribution of this study is to provide orientation to small companies on how to use partnerships based on the challenges to overcome reaching regions with water scarcity.

Abstract:
To reduce the aircraft components weight, several solutions were explored. Among them, the using of light aluminum alloys and the substitution of riveting by friction stir welding (FSW) are investigated. Industry is concerned by the question of the life of such structures. For this, this study is focused on intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) sensitivity of the 2050 Al-Li-Cu alloy friction stir weld nugget. This material consists of equiaxed grains whose size is decreasing with the distance from the weld surface between 17 µm at the top and 4 µm at the bottom. The “onion rings” microstructure is revealed by EBSD cartographies as a texture variation. They appear with a periodicity of 500 µm corresponding to the advance per revolution of the tool. Those microstructural heterogeneities cause local mechanical field gradients quantified by digital image correlation measurements during mechanical tests. Those microstructural and mechanical heterogeneities promote localized corrosion when the material is submitted to an aggressive environnement. Microstructure and stress effects on IGSCC are shown by corrosion tests and stress corrosion tests. The first ones show a sensitivity to pitting corrosion and a stress application reveal initiation of intergranular cracks. The biggest ones preferentially initiate at “onion rings” boundaries. A finite element model was developed in order to simulate intergranular cracks propagation on real aggregates obtained by EBSD cartographies

Abstract:

The alliance problem is a relatively new concept in graph theory and has many interesting and practical variations. Global defensive alliance problem and security problem are two representative problems for showing usefulness to this research field. A lot of graph theorists have much been attracted by these two alliance related problems. This dissertation discusses global defensive alliance problem and security problem on two well-known interconnection networks, namely trees and star networks. This dissertation focuses on the characteristics of trees and star networks and finds useful properties for solving aforementioned problems. The first subject of this dissertation is to find a critical global defensive alliances on star networks. The result is helpful to derive an upper bound to the size of the minimum global (strong) defensive alliances in star networks. The second subject of this dissertation is to propose an algorithm for solving a variation of the security problem. For including a predetermined vertex in a secure set, we are trying to find the minimum secure set on trees and star networks. We use the dynamic programming techniques to find a minimum secure set containing the predetermined vertex on trees. Besides, we also find a secure set with a predetermined vertex on star networks and then establish an upper bound to the dimension of star networks.

Nasser, Walid Samir Samy Moheb Abdelrahman. "Strategic alliances in the South African independent 3 star and above hotels." Diss., 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/26821.

Full text
Abstract:
This research was conducted to identify whether South African 3 star and above hotels are interested in forming alliances. The objective of this study was to group South African independent 3 star and above hotels on the alliance framework continuum, namely; cooperation, collaboration, coordination and coadunation; and to identify whether South African independent 3 star and above hotels are interested to progress from one simple form of alliance to the next complex, formal type of alliance. Hypotheses were proposed to determine the significance of the differences in preference of South African 3 star and above independent hotels. Thus, this study is descriptive in nature, to test the proposed hypotheses. An extensive investigation into the relevant literature was done. An empirical study was also conducted and the measuring instrument consisted of a selfadministered questionnaire. The population selected consisted of managers of these South African 3 star and above independent hotels. The major findings included: South African independent 3 star and above hotels seem to prefer niche personality and potential non-financial relationship, while they try to avoid economic and cultural integration with a partner firm and not interested in shared management control with the partner firm. Besides, four factors confirmed the alliance continuum developed by Bailey and Koney (2000), namely; cooperation, coordination, collaboration and coadunation. Friedman’s test indicated that there is significant difference among the different dimensions of alliance formation, namely; cooperation, collaboration, coordination and coadunation and that South African independent 3 star and above hotels are interested to form cooperation form of alliances mostly, followed by coordination form of alliances. South African independent 3 star and above hotels are neutral on whether to form collaboration type of alliances and they are not interested to involve in the coadunation form of alliances. Chi-square test indicated that there is no significant difference on the opinion of the respondents on whether the hotel they work for needs to progress from simpler form of alliances into more formal and complex format of alliances. However, those who preferred that their hotel has to progress from simpler form of alliance are higher in number than those who did not prefer. It was, inter alia, recommended that as South African 3 star and above hotels choose lower form of alliance, value chains seem the most applicable form of alliance. Hotels could share a name, reservation information and some basic IT facilities (point of sale IT reservation equipment and back office IT equipments). Finally, the study concludes by recommending that South African independent 3 star and above hotels should take alliances as an option for growth and justification of expenditures and decide the level of alliance continuum they want to engage in.

Perez, L., Jeryl M. Whitelock, and J. Florin. "Learning about customers: Managing B2B alliances between small technology startups and industry leaders." 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/6131.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose - The aim of this paper is to gain a better understanding of how small technology start-ups learn about a key customer in the context of B2B relationships, and to propose a model of interfirm learning with customers. Design/methodology/approach - Using a qualitative case-based approach, the authors immerse themselves in the development of three learning alliances between technology startups and industry leaders, two successes and one failure, to gain an in-depth understanding of the dynamics involved. Data were collected on both sides of the alliance dyad. Findings - The paper delineates four learning cycles: alliance inception, joint-learning, specialization and discovery. These learning cycles constitute sequences of increasing understanding, cooperation, and higher order learning between the partners; evolving from an exchange of existing knowledge to the joint development of new knowledge. Originality/value - This study contributes to an integration of the alliance and marketing literatures by offering empirical evidence of a different type of alliance, namely the reciprocal learning alliance. It also contributes to broadening our understanding of market orientation in inter-organizational settings. In the context of business-to-business relationships, the study has identified four critical dimensions of learning alliance success, and proposed how they could be measured: Learn about customers; Interact with customers; Customer-specific investments; and Co-develop breakthrough innovations. Finally, the study demonstrates the significant role played by 'committed champions'.
