Abstract:
AbstractBackground: Mission statements have come to play an important role as tools for organizational value sharing. Objectives: This study aims to shed light on what types of values are highlighted in international airline alliance members’ mission statements, and whether there are significant differences or not.Methods/Approach: Quantitative content analyses have been conducted with the goal to investigate mission statements of 61 members of international airline alliances: Star Alliance, SkyTeam, and oneworld. Results: Frequency test outcomes reveal that “philosophy”, “self-concept” and “location” are the predominant components in oneworld, “philosophy” is the primary component in SkyTeam, and “philosophy” and “customer” are the focal components of Star Alliance. According to chi-square tests, Star Alliance members emphasize “customer” more often than others do, and oneworld members highlight “profitability” more often. One-way Anova tests with a post hoc analysis reveal that Star Alliance members cover more components than SkyTeam. Conclusions: The theoretical implication of these findings is that they reveal the existence of unique values among international airline alliances members offering a competitive advantage. As a practical implication, these findings will be helpful for international airline alliances and airline managers for comparative purposes.

Abstract:
An airline alliance is a group of member airlines that seek to achieve the same goals through routes and airports. Hence, airports’ connectivity plays an essential role in understanding the linkage between different markets, especially the impact of neighboring airports on focal airports. An airline alliance airport network (AAAN) comprises airports as nodes and routes as edges. It could reflect a clear collaborative proportion within AAAN and competitive routes between AAANs. Recent studies adopted an airport- or route-centric perspective to evaluate the relationship between airline alliances and their member airlines; meanwhile, they mentioned that an airport community could provide valuable air transportation information because it considers the entire network structure, including the impacts of the direct and indirect routes. The objectives are to identify spatial patterns of market region in an airline alliance and characterize the differences among airline alliances (Oneworld, Star Alliance, and SkyTeam), including regions of collaboration, competition, and dominance. Our results show that Star Alliance has the highest collaboration and international market dominance among three airline alliances. The most competitive regions are Asia-Pacific, West Asia, Europe, and North and Central America. The network approach we proposed identifies market characteristics, highlights the region of market advantages in the airline alliance, and also provides more insights for airline and airline alliances to extend their market share or service areas.

Abstract:
Abstract For the last several decades, global airline alliances have ensured their market presence in the aviation industry. Scholars have focused on the effects of alliance affiliation for airlines and what the competitive advantages of alliances are. However, these issues have been discussed in relation to operational aspects. The quality of strategic communication can be an important factor in achieving a competitive advantage and realizing a differentiation strategy. This study assessed the differences in quality of strategic communication between the three leading alliance groups (oneworld, SkyTeam, and Star Alliance) and a non-alliance group. Comprehensive content analysis was implemented using the letters of chief executive officers (CEOs) of 46 airlines. We found that the non-alliance group has more ideal CEO letters than the alliance groups, and the main topics and quality of CEO letters of alliance group differed. This study provides a novel insight into the competitive advantage of global airline alliances.

This article is poised to explain the significance, analyze and understand the relationships that are established between partners of a strategic alliance. The analysis conducted was modeled on the example of airline alliances. Airlines decide on operating as alliances due to economic benefits which they would not be able to reach on their own. In the result of their cooperation, these entities produce beneficial synergistic effects. It should be noted that by starting cooperation within an alliance, those entities still remain competitors. The analysis provides a comparison of three largest airline alliances: Star Alliance, SkyTeam and Oneworld. The article contains a summary of the most important conclusions of the analysis.

Abstract:
Over the past several decades, the aviation industry has been reshaped, centering on global alliances, and these have grown exponentially. However, it is still not clear whether they are achieving sustained competitive advantages, and what are the specific competitive advantages of the three alliances (oneworld, SkyTeam, Star Alliance) arising on the customer side. This study aims to examine whether global alliance groups outperform the non-alliance group, how the three alliances differ regarding passengers’ perceptions, and what their competitive advantages are. A hybrid text mining analysis was adopted as this study’s method. Frequency tests, t-tests, one-way analysis of variance tests, and three-step mediated regression analyses were performed using 6393 ordinal and word-of-mouth (WOM) data. We found that the degree of passengers’ perceptions of alliances was low, the non-alliance group outperformed the alliance groups, and there were no significant differences between alliances on service rating and sentiment score. Only oneworld has competitive advantages that link to passengers’ service rating and sentiment score. These findings imply that alliances could not ensure competitive advantages that derive from customers’ perceptions, and although passengers partly perceived several selling points, their differentiation strategies are not successful.

Abstract:
Competition between alliance blocks is a new form of rivalry: groups of firms link together for a common purpose by means of strategic alliances, and competition between alliance blocks is superimposed on competition between individual firms. This paper focuses on alliance blocks in the RISC microprocessor field. In this field, alliance block competition is shaped by battles over technical standards. Based on an analysis of the competitive forces in standards battles, and taking into consideration the need for internal coordination within alliance blocks, we expect to find the formation of alliance blocks around the various proprietary RISC designs, with scarce linkages across blocks. The blocks will consist of complementary firms, including all the capabilities necessary to compete against other alliance blocks. The requisites of internal coordination, finally, lead us to expect alliance blocks with star-like internal structures when the central firm has either a very weak, or a very strong position. In intermediate cases, we expect to find alliance blocks with internal structures more approaching the characteristics of fully-connected cliques. The findings from a quantitative analysis of the network structure as it evolved in the RISC field in the period 1980-1989 support these conjectures.

Abstract:
Global alliances have traditionally been related to improvements in the economic and operational performances of companies, particularly in the airline industry. However, we still do not know the effect of the participation in this kind of multilateral agreement on the environmental performance of airlines. The main aim of this work is to analyze whether the alliance membership of airlines has an effect upon their environmental performance, and if so, whether or not the characteristics of the global alliance, as well as the business model of the airline, may influence this relation to a greater or lesser extent. The results of regression and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) in a sample of 252 airlines (58 included in one of the three global alliances: Star Alliance, Oneworld, and SkyTeam) show a strong and inverse relationship between environmental performance and belonging to an alliance. The paper also shows empirical evidence of the influence of the business model of the airline on environmental performance. These results suggest important implications for managers facing challenges regarding sustainability.

Abstract:
Turkish Airlines was founded in 1933 as Turkey's first flight carrier under the Ministry of Defense. In 1956, it was reorganized and operated under special legislation and renamed Türk Hava Yolları A.O. Since this time, it has continuously expanded its fleet. Under successful growth strategies, Turkish Airlines had added new flight destinations and aircrafts to enhance its values. Turkish Airlines decided to join the Star Alliance on 4 August. It had been nominated “The Best Airline” in its region and received the Aircraft Finance Journal's “2008 European Deal of the Year” award for the financing of aircraft. Turkish Airlines is known for its impeccable service, flight safety and connectivity worldwide. With its global headquarters in Istanbul, it is a gateway between east and west. In recent years, Turkish Airlines had achieved 12% growth in its operating profits and 15% growth in its sales revenues. The number of aircraft grew by 4%, from 127 to 132. International routes accounted for 79% and domestic routes 21% of revenues from scheduled services. Turkish Airlines had established the Anadolu Jet brand and transported 13.4 million passengers to 119 destinations in 5 continents. Turkish Airlines had kept growing even during the economic crisis. This case examines the vision and mission of Turkish Airlines and its growth strategies. It also examines the marketing strategies used to pursue growth.

The authors conduct a “netnographic” analysis of two prominent retro brands, the Volkswagen New Beetle and Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace, that reveals the importance of Allegory (brand story), Aura (brand essence), Arcadia (idealized community), and Antinomy (brand paradox). Retro brand meanings are predicated on a utopian communal element and an enlivening paradoxical essence. Retro brand management involves an uneasy, cocreative, and occasionally clamorous alliance between producers and consumers.

Abstract:

AbstractIn the airline industry where intense competition has taken place, performance evaluation is vital for airlines to achieve their goals and to gain a competitive advantage. This study aims to evaluate the performance of airlines based on the role of performance evaluation in the airline industry. For this purpose, twelve FSCs (Full-Service Carriers) were evaluated based on financial and airline-specific performance indicators for the 2015-2017 period. While the sample consisted of Star Alliance member airlines, an integrated CRITIC and CODAS methodology was proposed in the study. In addition, a sensitivity analysis was performed after the application to examine the accuracy and the stability of the results. The results of the study reveal that financial indicators have a higher impact on performance compared to operational indicators. Moreover, Singapore Airline (SIA) is the best airline regardless of T change.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction As the healthcare system shifts from fee-for service toward value-driven healthcare, interest has grown in medication-related quality metrics to evaluate quality and value within the healthcare system. While the Defense Health Agency (DHA) has taken steps to align healthcare quality measures across the enterprise, the extent to which DHA utilizes pharmacy quality measures (PQMs) or evaluates the quality of direct and purchased pharmacy care is unknown. Materials and Methods A comparison was made between existing PQMs utilized by DHA and all measures published and endorsed by the Pharmacy Quality Alliance (PQA), a recognized, PQM standard-setting organization. We also compared DHA PQMs to those used within the Medicare Part D Star Rating Program. Results DHA has implemented 10 (28%) of the 36 PQA measures available for evaluation as of August 2019. Of the five measures included in the 2020 CMS Part D Star Rating program, DHA has currently implemented four (80%) of the measures. DHA has implemented 3 of the 5 (60%) PQA CMS Display Measures, and 5 of 9 (56%) PQA CMS Patient Safety Report Measures that are not part of the Star Ratings, but that are used to benchmark and provide feedback to health plans. Conclusion Opportunities exist within the DHA to leverage PQMs to evaluate the quality of pharmaceutical care, build trust with beneficiaries by increasing transparency, and maintain parity with the civilian healthcare system. Existing models and commercially available technology could be considered to rapidly operationalize the use of PQMs within the MHS.

Abstract:

The current development of the company is growing rapidly, a few years ago happened at this time-only recently opened routes that had not been there before. In addition, there are also many old friends who finally close because of several factors. Garuda Indonesia is one airline that has not been around long enough. Then, Garuda Indonesia still has to maintain the loyalty of its customers so that they do not move around in the presence of Public Relations. In maintaining that loyalty, Public Relations plans to maintain the loyalty of its customers. Actually, Garuda Indonesia is a company that has a pretty good corporate image, such as with Garuda Indonesia in getting awards such as the Best Cabin Cabin, 5 Star Airlines, Incorporated in the SkyTrax and SkyTeam Alliance. Then Garuda Indonesia is a full service that provides full service, people who use Garuda Indonesia airlines will be issued well. The things done in this study want to see the public relations strategy planning of Garuda Indonesia's in building consumer trust.

"Richard III with aliens" is how Cornell (102) describes "Sins of the Father," an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation (hereafter TNG) in which the Klingon warrior Worf, son of Mogh, seeks to restore his family's honour by exposing and challenging those responsible for falsely accusing his dead father of treason to the Klingon Empire. Worf is only pardy successful in his quest, and he remains a perpetually marginal figure whose identity is divided by his Klingon heritage, his childhood as a Klingon orphan raised by humans, and his current status as the only Klingon in Starfleet, the military arm of the Federation of Planets, an alliance of Earth and other worlds whose relationship with the Klingon Empire is marked by tension, suspicion and, at times, open hostility. As a result of these divisions and struggles, Worf's family is eventually stripped of its wealth and rank on the Klingon home-world, and Worf's brother Kurn seeks a ritual death as the only way to absolve his own and his family's disgrace.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to explore the reasons for the rise of independent, stand-alone restaurants and ascertains the benefits of outsourcing food and beverage (F&B) in luxury hotels in India from the perspectives of the strategic partners involved in such an alliance. The study also proposes different formats for F&B outsourcing in luxury hotels. Design/methodology/approach An exploratory study was carried out by collecting primary data from 16 Hotel General Managers and F&B operations experts through qualitative, semi-structured, personal and in-depth interviews. NVivo12 software was used to carry out a qualitative thematic analysis of the data. The primary data collected were triangulated with secondary data gathered through literature review of academic papers, industry reports and studies on the trends of restaurants in luxury hotels being outsourced. Findings The study focusses on the antecedents of the rise of stand-alone restaurants in the Indian hospitality industry. To combat the competitive disruption arising because of this trend, the study posits the business model innovation of outsourcing F&B operations in luxury hotels. Practical implications The benefits of a strategic alliance from the perspective of both parties – the luxury hotel and Michelin-star chef or branded/marquee restaurant – are elucidated. Further, three broad formats, which can be adopted for speciality restaurant outsourcing are also proposed. Practitioners, researchers and educationists in the hospitality industry would find the implications of this study useful in the context of the present customer-centric business environment where hotels are constantly striving to meet the exponentially rising bar of guest expectations in an increasingly globalised milieu. Originality/value The study proposes a preliminary road map for internationalisation of F&B operations through the business model innovation of outsourcing operations of in-house specialty restaurants by luxury hotels in the Indian context.

Abstract:
The article will analyze the application of 'out of market efficiencies' to airline alliance agreements by the European Commission. The Commission in May 2013 issued a decision in relation to the revenue-sharing joint venture on certain routes offered by Air Canada, United Airlines, and Lufthansa (who are all members of Star Alliance). This decision is the first instance where the Commission accepted the argument of out of market efficiencies. Generally, the assessment of efficiencies by the Commission is confined to 'in market efficiencies' i.e., the markets where concerns were identified by the Commission. Out of market efficiencies are efficiencies which are generated on the market other than the markets where concerns were identified by the Commission. According to the standard test set out by the Commission in its Guidelines, efficiencies on other markets can be accepted where: (i) two markets are related; and (ii) group of consumers affected and benefitting are substantially the same. The Parties contended that the cooperation created efficiencies on the Frankfurt-New York route (market on which Commission raised concerns) and on other related behind and beyond routes (e.g., Prague-Frankfurt-New York or Frankfurt-New York-Seattle). In its decision the Commission broadened the standard test in that it did not require the Parties to demonstrate that the groups of consumers travelling on the Frankfurt-New York route and the related routes are 'substantially the same'. It was sufficient for the parties to demonstrate 'considerable commonality' between passengers travelling on the route of concern and the related behind and beyond route. This article also considers whether the Commission is justified in restricting the application of out of market efficiencies only to those markets which are related to the relevant market.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to explore how the entertainment economy excludes individuals and facilitates private investment, the problematic shift towards a “creative economy” and increased regulations within Sydney’s entertainment sector. It also examines how a grass-roots, rural festival can be regarded as an extension of the urban context. It discusses the alternative counterculture(s) that exist despite (or perhaps because of) increasing inaccessibility and regulation, using as a case study an activist collective created in this climate, the Marrickville Warehouse Alliance, focusing specifically on its Star Shitty River Retreat festival. Design/methodology/approach A phenomenological, mixed-method approach is used with a focus on qualitative in-depth interviews with festival organisers. Findings This paper demonstrates how politics, embedded within urban place, can be transported to a rural festival site. The phenomenological accounts recorded with the festival organisers, paired with key theories within the literature, demonstrate how organising committees can shape the understanding of place and politics in grass-roots festival environments. Social implications By leaving “no trace” on the site and engaging with and contributing to the indigenous community, the Star Shitty River Retreat festival can be categorised as a type of “creative enhancement”, in which a shared environment of political and communal understanding creates a unique, yet temporary, sense of place within a rural setting. Originality/value There is limited literature on the Australian festival context. The finding that rural festival sites can be regarded as an extension of the urban context lends itself to the concept of de-territorialisation or blurring of city boundaries, reinforcing how a festival’s geographical location is of little significance when supported by “portable communities”.

Abstract:
This article gives an overview of the major developments on the European Union aviation scene between 1 July 2008 and 30 November 2008. In particular: – The consolidation drive continued unabated. In addition to the alliance arrangements between Continental Airlines, United Airlines, and a number of other Star Alliance carriers announced in June 2008, American Airlines, British Airways, and Iberia made public in August 2008 that they had also applied for an antitrust immunity of their proposed alliance. The European Commission opened ex officio investigations into both alliance arrangements. During the period under review, the European Commission also cleared the Delta Airlines/Northwest Airlines merger, started an investigation into Lufthansa’s proposed acquisition of a 45% stake in SN Holding, the parent company of Brussels Airlines, and decided to open an in–depth investigation into the KLM/Martinair merger. Other transactions that were mentioned in the press include Lufthansa’s acquisition of a majority ownership of bmi British Midland, and its intention to acquire control of Austrian Airlines, which is being privatized by the Austrian Government. British Airways is in merger negotiations with Iberia and it is rumored that Air France/KLM may still end up acquiring a (majority) stake in Alitalia. – There have been major developments in the State aid field during the period under review. The European Commission and the European Court of First Instance adopted important decisions with regard to Alitalia, and there have been further developments in the Olympic State aid matter. The European Commission also adopted State aid measures in a number of other aviation–related cases – There were a number of noteworthy regulatory developments during the period under review, most importantly the publication in the Official Journal of the new regulation on the internal market for air transport, which brings together in one single legal instrument the three 1992 regulations that hitherto formed the pillars of the internal aviation market and that controlled (1) the licensing of air carriers, (2) the access of European Union carriers to intra–European Union routes, and (3) the fares and rates for air services. There were also further developments regarding the proposal for a new CRS (computerized reservation system) Code of Conduct. In addition, a Directive extending the European Union Emission Trading Scheme to aviation was finally adopted, and the European Court of Justice adopted a ruling on the interpretation of the concept of ‘flight’ for the purposes of the application of Regulation 261/2004 on compensation and assistance in the event of denied boarding, cancellation, and long delay – Finally, with regard to the European Union external aviation policy, the European Commission published a report on its progress toward the creation of a Common Aviation Area (CAA) with the neighbouring countries by 2010. There were also further developments regarding the negotiation or conclusion of horizontal air services agreements with third countries. Each of these points will be examined in greater detail in the sections below.

Abstract:
The aim of this article is to identify the importance of benchmarking as a source of innovation in the activities of tourism enterprises through the case study of LOT S.A. Polish Airlines. To expand, the objective was to identify the departments within the company which used benchmarking as a stimulus to create a new or improve an existing offer. The subject was an airline belonging to Star Alliance and 27 employees from selected departments. The study used questionnaires and. with managers of selected departments only, open standardized interviews. Statistical inference methods, including a chi-square test, were applied to analyse the data. Although the introduction of benchmarking in the company's structure allows for a quick escape route from a cycle of limitation in the company’s own culture and standard behaviour (and the acquisition of knowledge during the process gives rise to new and innovative ideas) the importance of this method in innovative activities did not result in any practical application. A lack of knowledge about benchmarking was noticeable, and an identification of this method with a simple competitive analysis resulted in failures in business activity as well as a lack of creativity in its application.

Abstract:
Background Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) provides a curative therapy for children severely affected by sickle cell disease (SCD). Rejection-free survival following a matched sibling donor (MSD) HSCT for these children is very high. As safer approaches are developed, using reduced intensity conditioning and improved graft versus host disease prophylaxis, there is rationale for extending MSD HSCT to less severely affected children to spare them increasing morbidity and early mortality in adulthood. Providers' perceptions may contribute to the slow adoption of MSD HSCT for less severe SCD. In this study we assess providers' perceptions about MSD HSCT for children with variable SCD severity and determine the influence of provider characteristics on HSCT attitudes. Methods Pediatric Hematologists/Oncologists (PHO) were eligible to participate in this IRB exempt study. An e-survey was distributed to all STAR members and ASH members who self-identified as PHO and posted on the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinical Forum listserv. Analysis was performed to describe participant demographics and the proportion of participants who practice exclusively Pediatric Hematology with a focus on SCD (PSCD) vs. general PHO; we evaluated correlations between these characteristics and likelihood of HSCT referral for each scenario. Results Of the 203 respondents, 59% were female, and 69% were between the ages of 30 and 49 years. Spearman's rank correlation analysis did not reveal any significant relationship between respondent age and likelihood to refer to HSCT for any of the survey scenarios. Two-thirds self-identified as Caucasian, 19% Asian, 7% African American and 3% Hispanic. 35% of respondents practiced general PHO, 20% PSCD, 20% Pediatric Hematology, 15% Pediatric HSCT, and 4% Hemostasis. The majority (75%) of respondents were very or somewhat likely to order HLA typing for a child with HbSS/HbSβ⁰thalassemia who had full siblings, regardless of disease severity. Only 48% would refer a child with HbSS/HbSβ⁰thalassemia who had an HLA-MSD but never admitted to the hospital; referral likelihood differed significantly by practice focus [PHO: 23% very or somewhat likely vs. 54% of PSCD (p=0.002)]. Conversely, 99% of respondents were very or somewhat likely to refer a child who suffered an overt stroke, while 85% and 84% were very or somewhat likely to refer a child who had an abnormal TCD or silent infarct, respectively. 49% of respondents were very or somewhat likely to refer a child with HbSS/HbSβ⁰thalassemia if they had a history of suboptimal adherence to hydroxyurea; referral likelihood again differed by practice focus [PHO: 35% very or somewhat likely vs. 64% PSCD (p=0.021)]. Concern about transplant related mortality (TRM) was the predominant reason for not referring. For children with severe clinical phenotypes of HbSC and HbSβ+thalassemia, 78% of respondents were very or somewhat likely to refer, compared to only 23% who would refer asymptomatic children with SCD variants. PHO and PSCD did not differ in the likelihood to refer either group. 87% of respondents were very or somewhat likely to refer a child with β-thalassemia major for MSD HSCT, regardless of disease severity; no statistically significant difference was found between PHO and PSCD in referral likelihood. A significantly higher proportion of respondents would refer an asymptomatic child with β-thalassemia major (87%) than those who were very or somewhat likely to refer an asymptomatic child with HbSS/HbSβ⁰thalassemia (47%, p<0.00001) or other SCD variants (23%, p= 0.0005). Discussion HSCT is a curative therapy for people with SCD. There was almost complete agreement that a HSCT referral should be made for children with HbSS/HbSβ⁰thalassemia and cerebral vasculopathies who have an MSD, but attitudes varied for almost every other clinical scenario posed. PSCD providers were more likely to refer asymptomatic patients and those with questionable adherence to hydroxyurea compared to general PHOs. TRM was the most common reason for not referring an asymptomatic child for MSD HSCT. Yet, TRM is low in the setting of pediatric MSD HSCT for SCD. Additional education about the decreased quality of life in aging people with SCD and their lack of improvement in life expectancy is needed so that physician perception of HSCT changes and the number of young asymptomatic children with SCD referred for MSD HSCT increases. Abstract:
When the American suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt (1859-1947), one of the founders of the International Alliance for Women's Suffrage, came to Prague in 1908 to lecture before German-speaking groups of women in the city, a beautiful young teacher asked her to address Czech women as well. Catt readily obliged. She could not have known, then, that this determined Czech feminist and nationalist, Františka Plamínková (1875-1942) would become, in time, a familiar figure on the international circuit of women's organizations, known as “Madame Plam” and would be executed by the Nazis as a member of the Czech resistance. For her fight against fascism and for the liberation of her nation Plamínková was awarded, posthumously in 1950, the Czechoslovak Order of the Gold Star by the Ministry of National Defense. But then her name disappeared, along with thousands of other names from the First Czechoslovak Republic, as Stalinist repression set in. A plaque affixed to the building once her residence on Staroměstské Square tells us little about this energetic, dedicated patriot and fighter for women's rights. In 1993, the Gender Institute in Prague opened its doors, and, today, as feminism begins to awaken in the Czech Republic, the work and accomplishments of Františka Plamínková should be instructive.

Abstract:
This article gives an overview of the major developments on the EU aviation scene between 1 December 2007 and 30 June 2008. In particular: — There were important EU external aviation policy developments during the period under review. The main development was the coming into force of the EU/US Open Skies Agreement. In addition, the Commission has continued its drive to conclude a number of horizontal air services agreements. — Partly as a result of the EU/US Open Skies Agreement and partly due to other economic factors including, in particular, the worsening economic climate, rocketing fuel prices and overcapacity (especially in the US), a number of consolidation transactions were announced (mergers or integrated alliances) during the period under review. They include the Delta/Northwest merger and the alliance arrangements between Continental, United Airlines and a number of other Star Alliance carriers. American Airlines and British Airways were also rumoured to be preparing another application for antitrust immunity (the two earlier applications failed). — There were also a number of other important competition law developments. The Commission continued its vigorous pursuit of infringement proceedings against carriers that have allegedly participated in illegal cartel behaviour. The battle between Aer Lingus and Ryanair also continued to rage, with Aer Lingus failing to obtain interim measures from the Court of First Instance stopping Ryanair from exercising voting rights linked to its minority shareholding in Aer Lingus. — There was a lot of activity in the State aid field during the period under review. There were certain noteworthy developments in the various ongoing Olympic investigations, while the loan granted by the Italian government to Alitalia also came under scrutiny. The Commission launched a number of investigations into start–up aid granted to Ryanair at a number of regional airports, which the Commission considers may be incompatible with the EU State aid rules. Finally,Ryanair also continued its fight trying to protect its business model, with developments in Ryanair’s appeal against the Commission’s Charleroi decision and the launch of proceedings against the Commission for alleged failure to act with regard to two complaints Ryanair submitted against alleged illegal airport aid granted to Lufthansa and Air France. — Finally, there were a number of important regulatory developments during the period under review, including (a) the European Parliament’s first reading of the Commission’s proposal for a new CRS Code of Conduct; (b) the adoption by the Commission of a Communication providing its views on a number of issues resulting from the review process of the present Slot Code of Conduct; (c) the adoption by the Council of Ministers for the Environment of a common position with regard to the Commission’s proposal to include aircraft emissions in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme; and (d) the publication by Consumer Commissioner Kuneva on the interim results of a crackdown on misleading aviation websites. Each of these points will be examined in greater detail in the sections below.
