Abstract:
Prelude (290–409): Ceyx, king of Trachis, just west of the Malian Gulf, was the son of Lucifer, the morning star, and he bore witness to his birth by the radiance of his face (271–2). He was a man of peace, unlike his brother, Daedalion, a fierce soldier, who, in a frenzy of grief at the murder of his daughter by Diana was pitied by Apollo and turned into a hawk (339–45). This was followed by another weird episode – the appearance of a monstrous wolf, which, after causing widespread destruction, was turned into a stone by Thetis (365–406). A (410–73): Worried by these strange events, Ceyx decides he must consult the oracle of Apollo. He cannot, however, go to Delphi, which is not far south, because it is being blockaded by Phorbas and the Phlegyans. So he prepares to go to Claros on the coast of Asia Minor. As the ship moves out to sea, Ceyx stands on the poop waving to his wife (A 465).Alcyone waves back, even though she is prostrate on the ground – collapsaque corpore toto est (460).Ovid gives a beautiful description of how first Ceyx himself ceases to be visible, then the hull moves out of sight and only the sails on the yard-arm can still be seen; finally, they, too, disappear over the horizon (A 466–71).

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore a true World War One event, the Christmas Truce of 1914. The paper is inspired by the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) award winning book, Shooting at the Stars: The Christmas Truce of 1914 by John Hendrix, which narrates the truce through a fictitious letter from a British soldier. On Christmas Eve, German soldiers on the western front line, specifically near the Belgium border, ceased fire and invited British soldiers to celebrate Christmas. Descriptions of events derive from oral histories and photos collected from actual soldiers who experienced this unusual historic event. Design/methodology/approach This lesson engages students in inquiry centers focused on events, location, soldiers, remembrance, and primary sources to answer the question: Why did the First World War Christmas Truce of 1914 occur? Practical implications World War One (AKA the First World War and The Great War) classroom history studies typically focus on tragic components of, what many call, a needless war. Many lessons examine military technologies, political power struggles, horrors of trench warfare, disease and casualties. In essence, “World War I saw unprecedented levels of carnage and destruction. By the time the war was over and the Allied Powers claimed victory, more than 16 million people – soldiers and civilians alike – were dead” (history.com Staff, 2009). This lesson reveals a spontaneous, impactful, emotionally charged event occurring during the worst of times. The Christmas Truce of 1914 moves students from thinking about the ravages of war into thinking deeply about what it truly means to be enemies, friends or even to mend relationships. Who are soldiers – what do they feel, need, believe and miss? During the truce, the longing for peace and human interaction superseded political ideologies, for a while. This lesson starts with students participating in a class discussion to uncover prior knowledge of the famous event. Students examine their real-life feelings regarding personal truces, answer guiding questions while rotating through classroom research centers, and collectively create a generalized response to answer the compelling question: Why did the First World War Truce of 1914 occur? Students will apply their understandings of the event, location, and feelings associated with the truce by taking a soldier’s persona and writing a letter home. Illustrations and maps further engage students’ creativity. Social implications This true story about the Christmas Truce of 1914 reminds us that countries may have differing ideologies and political beliefs which cause conflicts, yet people, as individuals, find commonalities making them seek peaceful connections with one another. Originality/value “The soldiers of 1914 remind us of the choice we all can make: we can see others as humans who matter like we matter – even when they’re our enemies. They also show us what can happen when we make that choice: enemies can become friends and, at least for a moment, there is peace” (Arbinger Institute, 2017, Section 3). This quote embodies the lesson’s value, because it brings understanding to a personal level – soldiers on the field. First World War soldiers were typically powerless. For instance, as many as 250,000 boys under the age of 18 served in the British army during the First World War. Patriotic fervor, escape from poor conditions or hopes for adventure were motives for joining. Birth certificates were uncommon; war recruiters received money for each sign-on, so boys as young as 14 went to war. In this lesson, students examine First World War background information; analyze the truce’s events, geography, soldiers and memorials. Students are immersed in large numbers of resources including videos, music, photographs, maps, books, articles, newspapers, historians’ perspectives, oral histories, museum archives and the First World War soldiers’ original letters that help reveal the story and help students understand underlying feelings of soldiers and their families.

Abstract:
Gaius Marius introduced a new act during his first consulship of the Roman Republic in 107 B.C. with the approval of the Senate. This act allowed him to alter the strategy for managing the Roman army. He permitted every eligible Roman citizen to join the army and thus to pursue the career of a professional soldier. Rome then put soldiers on the payroll. Rome also paid for arms, bodily protection, and other necessities. Marius tasked seasoned soldiers with providing field training to the new recruits on the battlefield. The new recruits learned an important lesson: the bravest was the safest. After expeditions, Marius divided the booty equally among his soldiers as an incentive to encourage victory and reward bravery. These practices stood in stark contrast to the Servian Segregation Decree, which Rome enforced during the reign of King Servius Tullius (578 to 534 B.C.). The Decree prohibited the poorest citizens from becoming Roman soldiers. The drafted soldiers also had to pay for their own arms, bodily protection, and other necessities. At the end of the war, they were discharged to return to their former civilian careers, such as farming and smithing. After the Marius era, the employment rights based on the army administration had evolved and fully developed to cover every step of the Roman soldier employment process: recruitment, enrollment, training and development, employment conditions, performance appraisal, and punishment. This process became one of the Roman army’s key success factors for the next several hundred years. Modern management practitioners should incorporate the Roman army administration process into the legal obligations within the company’s employment policy. The legality of the policy is a result of the adoption of the United Nations Declarations, Conventions, and Covenant into member states’ local laws and regulations. This paper focuses on the documentary research method to analyze and assess the relevant documents.

In March 1981, a Michigan woman wrote to the organizer of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund's design competition describing her concept for the memorial: she proposed a life-sized sculpture of an American soldier and a Vietnamese child, with “one hand reaching out, tentatively, no touching, toward the soldier's drooping fingers. In this little child's sweet, innocent face I see all we tried to do in Vietnam, stark contrast to what really happened, what we expended through those long hard years, these two human beings a bridge between our hopes and dreams, and cold reality. Abstract:
This study investigated the relationship between the level of combat exposure and army status (regular army soldiers vs national servicemen) and the subsequent development of combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Sixty-four Australian infantrymen who were exposed to combat stress in Vietnam were used in this study. They were divided into four groups based on combat exposure and status as a regular or conscripted soldier. Subjects were assessed 23 years after their tour of duty in Vietnam for PTSD and psychiatric symptomatology using a PTSD inventory based on DSM-III-R criteria, the Self-report Checklist 90 (SCL-90), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Impact of Events Scale (IES), the Mississippi Scale for Combat-related PTSD (Mississippi Scale), the State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and a demographic questionnaire. Results showed that 29.85% of the veterans have a positive diagnosis of PTSD according to self-report of symptoms based on the DSM-III-R criteria, while 54.89% of the remaining veterans suffer major symptoms of this disorder. MANOVA results show that neither the level of combat exposure nor the army status of the veterans had any significant effect on their psychiatric symptomatology as measured by the SCL-90, the BDI, the IES, and the STAI.

Abstract:
Emblazoned across the front page of The New York Times on Sunday, 15 November 1981 was a large photograph of hundreds of US soldiers from the army's 82nd Airborne Division parachuting into the vast western desert of the Sinai Peninsula. The photo was eerily reminiscent of the images from October 1956 when Israeli soldiers dropped into the same desert as part of their effort, along with British and French forces, to topple the government of Egyptian President Jamal ʿAbd al-Nasir. But the American soldiers were on a much different mission. Rather than attempting to bring down Egypt's government, they were there to participate, alongside Egyptian forces, in “Operation Bright Star,” the largest American military exercise in the Middle East since World War II. During the next ten days, more than 6,000 US soldiers participated in the “war games,” which stretched from Egypt to Sudan, Somalia, and Oman, at an estimated cost of more than 50 million dollars (157 million dollars in current figures). On 25 November, the penultimate day of the operation, a half dozen American B-52s flying from North Dakota dropped a cluster of bombs over the Egyptian desert and then returned home on a thirty-two-hour journey without stopping, demonstrating the vast reach of the American military.

Abstract:
This thesis uses the Victorian ideology of chivalric manlines to explain the class-oriented army hierarchy developed by volunteer soldiers from northern England during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. Newspaper reports, advertising, and popular fiction reveal a public mythology of imperial manliness and neo-chivalric ideals that was transferred onto civilian volunteers, creating an ideal warrior that satisfied a thirst for honour. This mythology created a world view in which northern communities, once supporters of the burgeoning peace movement, became committed supporters of parochial units of volunteer soldiers that fought in the newly expanded army. Soldiers' letters and diaries reveal that ingrained ideals of manliness and chivalry led to class-differentiated hierarchies within the army that mirrored those in civilian life. Contrary to the conclusions of some current historians, the Regular soldier remained in his traditional place at the bottom of the army structure, so that "the more things change, the more they remain the same."

This study intends to study volunteer soldiers’ intention to stay in army. Two independent variables, job characteristics and organizational commitment, are used to predict volunteer soldiers’ decisions to stay in army. Totally 356 valid samples of volunteer soldiers in the division of communication and information technology are surveyed by questionnaire between Dec. 2009 and Jan. 2010. The results show that most demographic variables do not have any impact on the decisions to stay in army. Both job characteristics and organizational commitment have strong predicting power on the decisions to leave or to stay in army. More detailed analyses are provided by looking further into various dimensions of two independent variables to identify particular source of impact on turnover decision.

Military police, as the enforcement force of military law and jurisdiction, have a different status from the general army, navy and air forces. It is more difficult in nursing the military police soldiers than in nursing other armed services. Also, the work of the military police is arduous. Coupled with a substantial increase in the level of social life, the established military incentive mechanism is gradually weakened, and hence the willingness to extend service duration for the volunteer soldiers in military police is decrease. Therefore, it is of great importance to enhance the willingness to stay in camp for the volunteer soldiers in military police. This study explores the factors affecting the willingness to stay in camp for the volunteer soldiers in military police. The factors such as economic factor, family factor, leadership and parenting style, freedom of life and career planning are the independent variables, while satisfaction is the mediating variable and the willingness to stay in camp is the dependent variable. The research subjects are the soldiers of military police and the empirical data are analyzed with structural equation modeling by using AMOS and SPSS software . The findings of this study are as follows: economic factor, leadership style, and freedom of life all have positive effects on satisfaction of the volunteer soldiers in military police. Besides, freedom of life and satisfaction of the volunteer soldiers have positive effects on the willingness to stay in camp. However, family factors do not have a positive effect on satisfaction of the volunteer soldiers. Furthermore, economic factor, family factors, and leadership style do not have effects on the willingness to stay in camp.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the biblical patriarch Noah as played by Russell Crowe in Darren Aronofsky’s Noah (2014). Starting from the foundation of Richard Dyer’s idea of a “star text” in which actors bring echoes of their old roles to new performances and thereby engage viewers on multiple levels, this chapter frames Crowe’s performance in Noah as what the author terms a “maximal projection.” Crowe brings his role as Maximus Decimus Meridius, the soldier who becomes a gladiator during the reigns of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus, to his later role as Noah. Through the repetition of things such as physical gestures, bodily movements, interactions with characters, and even sometimes dialogue, Crowe performs what the author terms “star-peats.”

Abstract:
Cary Grant and Betsy Drake’s marriage limped forward for two years after his affair with Sophia Loren. In the midst of this, Loren arrived in Hollywood and Grant began pursuing her again, asking her to marry him. He was finishing Kiss Them for Me (1957) at the time. Producer Jerry Wald had been trying to film this Second World War story for years, but it was only when Grant signed to star in it that the project got the green light. Grant enjoyed working with the film’s director, Stanley Donen, but he was ill-suited to play a soldier having weekend leave in San Francisco. The film was one of the very few flops in his later career. He then made Houseboat (1958). Drake had written the original screenplay thinking that she and Grant might star in the film together. At Grant’s request, the studio assigned other writers to rewrite it as a vehicle for Sophia Loren. The comedy, about an Italian nanny falling in love with her boss, culminates in their marriage. This was a difficult scene for the stars to film after Loren refused Grant’s own proposal. Indiscreet (1958), directed by Stanley Donen and co-starring Ingrid Bergman, was a happier production. This delightfully sophisticated romantic comedy benefits from Donen’s imaginative direction and from location shooting that captures the glamour of the London setting.

Abstract:
This chapter explores Power’s work within the Western genre. When Power was cast in the title role of Hollywood’s first ‘A Western’ of the 1930s: Jesse James (Henry King) in 1939 it marked the first major curve in Power’s career trajectory. When it became Twentieth Century-Fox’s biggest hit of the year this proved that audiences were ready to accept Power in more masculine roles at the close of the decade. Released in the period directly preceding America’s entry into World War II, the film was integral in developing a much-needed shift in Power’s screen masculinity, appearance and performance style, reflecting the shifting industrial and social context in which it was made. In advancing his star image away from a womaniser, and instead placing it within an overtly homosocial environment, Power was able to convincingly demonstrate male bonding and leadership through a tougher masculinity which was essential for both the historical timeframe and Power’s own upcoming real-life war service. Despite the film’s huge success, it was another 12 years before Power starred in another Western, and made just four in overall: Jesse James, Rawhide (Henry Hathaway, 1951), Pony Soldier (Joseph M. Newman, 1952) and The Mississippi Gambler (Rudolph Maté, 1953).

Abstract:
This chapter marks the start of the Karen Revolution and the start of Saw Ralph's journey as a soldier. At Karen New Year on December 29, 1948, a number of bursts of rifle fire and automatic gunfire were directed at the Karen quarters in Insein. That was the beginning of the revolution. While his family was preparing to evacuate, Saw Ralph snuck out to the front line without their knowledge. He craved adventure. After receiving a gun, Saw Ralph went to the front line with his coworkers, thus beginning his career as a soldier at the battle of Insein—the first major battle of the Karen Revolution. He was eighteen years old. He had made up his mind that he would stay until he died or could no longer fight. He was there at the very beginning of the revolution, in that first life-changing battle, and he stayed for the next five decades.

Abstract:
Symbols like the service flag furthered community morale in the United States during World War I and evolved to engender memorial organizations like Gold Star Mothers. Music supported both, with three components of the industry—Tin Pan Alley, Kitchen Table publishing, and Song Sharks—differing in key respects: the participation of women composers and lyricists, the focus on mothers and loss, and the mix of ballads, waltz songs, and marches. As the war evolved, so did the responses, with the closing months and aftermath focusing increasingly on soldiers’ fatalities and the expression of grief and mourning. Postwar changes in style and dissemination marked the end of such collective expressions.

Abstract:
This chapter follows Dr. Wu in his work to devise a solution for organic waste treatment using insects. By examining the tension between China's urban development and the sustainable treatment of organic waste, the chapter argues that China's project to institute a green modernity increasingly shows a preference for scientific solutions that address local conditions. This preference is in stark contrast to previous policies and approaches under which Chinese cities, for example, pushed for the adoption of imported waste management technologies and, in the case of organic waste, expelled the animals that served as a de facto waste management system. The chapter also highlights the longer historical traditions and practices that buttress the development of technology. China has a specific history of using insects as a tool and resource and has also focused on biological pest control in domestic entomological research. As a waste management technology, the Black Soldier Fly project creates a new use for insects while simultaneously generating increased interspecies dependencies between insects and humans.

Abstract:
Lead (Pb)-free implementation for electronic assembly has created a stir in electronic packaging industry during the last five years since Europe and eastern Asian countries decided to restrict the use of lead in electronic packages. Lead (Pb) content in solders is mandated to be less than 0.2 wt % (USA) and 0.1 wt % (EU). Sn-Ag-Cu (Tin, Silver, and Copper) solder is selected as one of the options to replace tin-lead solders. This solder is a preferred option as it comes closest to tin-lead solder in terms of parameters such as melting temperature (∼217°C), wettability, cost, availability, and reliability. Various agencies like NEMI, JEIDA and IDEALS recommend Tin-rich Lead (Pb) free solders as the possible alternatives to Pb-Sn solder [1]. Addition of elements like Au, Co, Fe, Ni, etc in small quantities can affect the properties of Sn-Ag-Cu solder. It has been reported that the addition of Au in small quantities improves the properties of lead-free solder. Au has very high reactivity with Sn and also improves the wettability of solder. Au forms a β-phase with Sn at the interface. This phase is considered beneficial in terms of improving fatigue life and fracture toughness as this β phase acts as a crack arrester thereby improving its strength Addition of Au also reduces the liquidus temperature to 204 °C. In this paper we tested and compared the strength of pure Sn-Ag-Cu solder and Sn-Ag-Cu solder with Au addition and it was concluded that the strength of material increases from 50 MPa to 70 MPa under tensile loading.

Abstract:
Portable products such as smartphones and tablets stay in the powered on condition for a majority of their operational life during which time the device internals are maintained at higher than ambient temperature. Thus, it would be expected for interconnects in portable products to be at a temperature high than room temperature when subjected to accidental drop or shock. Furthermore, electronics in missile-applications may be subjected to high strain rates after prolonged period of storage often at high temperature. Electronics systems including interconnects may experience high strain rates in the neighborhood of 1–100 per sec during operation at high temperature. However, the material properties of SAC305 leadfree solders at high strain rates and high operating temperatures are scarce after long-term storage. Furthermore, the solder interconnects in simulation of product drop are often modeled using elastic-plastic properties or linear elastic properties, neither of which accommodate the effect of operating temperature on the solder interconnect deformation at high operating temperature. SAC305 solders have been shown to demonstrate the significant degradation of mechanical properties including the tensile strength and the elastic modulus after exposure to high temperature storage for moderate periods of time. Previously, Anand’s viscoplastic constitutive model has been widely used to describe the inelastic deformation behavior of solders in electronic components under thermo-mechanical deformation. Uniaxial stress-strain curves have been plotted over a wide range of strain rates (ε̇ = 10, 35, 50, 75 /sec) and temperatures (T = 25, 50, 75, 100, 125°C). Anand viscoplasticity constants have been calculated by non-linear fitting procedures. In addition, the accuracy of the extracted Anand constants has been evaluated by comparing the model prediction and experimental data.

Abstract:
Abstract This article proposed a novel friction stir welding process to weld high melting point alloy plates with low melting point alloy strip as auxiliary solder to reduce the wear of the friction stir welding tool and extend its service life, and feasibility of this process was evaluated. An AA2A12 strip was clamped to the gap between two Q235 low-carbon steel plates as an auxiliary solder before welding, then a joint with excellent surface quality and smooth weld edge transition was obtained by friction stir welding process in which the tool was made of low-cost material tungsten-carbide. Macrostructure, microstructure and fracture surface of the joints were investigated by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. The tensile tests were conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties of the joint at rotational speed of 800 r/min, traverse speed of 50 mm/min, with plunge depth and probe offset of 0.1 mm. The tensile strength of the joint was 108.9 MPa at room temperature what proved the feasibility of the novel way we proposed. The micro-hardness value of the cross section of the welded joint is M-shaped from the AS to the RS, and gradually decrease from the top plane to the bottom plane. There is a certain relationship between the welding process parameters and the macroscopic morphology, micro-hardness and mechanical properties of the welded joint. Hence, the method we proposed has high innovation, and economy, high value of scientific research and industrial application, and provides a new idea about friction stir welding of high melting point alloys.

Abstract:
Introduction: The activities of security forces and armed forces depend on two parameters: psychological level and physical fitness. These two components are the main parts of the selection procedure. Physical fitness is a topic to be discussed, especially in regard to security forces or armed forces (Bonneau, Brown 1995; Sörensen et al. 2000). Physical preparation fundamentally affects the performance of a policeman or a soldier and it is associated with stress management and service interventions or combat tasks (Gershon et al. 2008; Darryl 2000). This research is focused on physical fitness of the army forces. Further this research is important not only because it should result in expanding the portfolio and knowledge enriching study fields, such as the Special education of Security Bodies (SESB) and Applied Sport Education of Security Bodies (ASEBS) at the Faculty of Sports Studies of Masaryk University, but it also aspires to be of great contribution for security forces or armed forces themselves (Bugala, Reguli, Čihounková 2015; Reguli, Bugala, Vít 2016). Aim: The aim of the study is to find out the physical fitness level of the Army forces of the Czech Republic. Methodology: Research design as descriptive and quantitative. The data of the physical fitness test was collected from the individual Army forces of the Czech Republic in the last 4 years (2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018). The quantitative data were analysed on the basis of the statistical methods. After executing the basic statistical and normality tests, we focused on ANOVA. The total number of respondents was in 776. The ratio between genders was 698:78. Results: After comparing physical fitness tests with Sit UP, Press Up, Pull Up, Stay in Pull Up, Cooper Test, and Swimming 300m over the past four years, there was no significant change in physical fitness. All disciplines had almost the same value except for the exer-cise with the name Stay in Pull Up. This exercise is for women. Fifteen women were tested in 2015, twenty-five women were tested in 2016, twenty-eight women were tested in 2017 and only ten women were tested in 2018. The small number of women, who tested is caused by the fact, that women are not as common in Army as men. Conclusion: We can say that the emphasis on the physical performance in Security and Army forces is still up to date. We did not notice any significant differences between the years 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 tested. Thanks to this finding, we can state that there is a continuous maintenance of physical fitness in the Czech Republic’s army.
