This essay outlines the personal experiences, influences and ideas that underlie 60 years of Roman Verostko's artwork and that drew him to embrace “algorithmic art.” The author spells out qualities of form unique to computer-assisted algorithmic drawing as well as the genre's pitfalls and discusses his good fortune to have been an active participant in what Peter Weibel has labeled the “Algorithmic Revolution.” For his pioneering work, Roman Verostko was awarded the 2009 SIGGRAPH Lifetime Achievement Award.

Abstract:

Two algebraic approaches based on a discrete variable representation are introduced and applied to describe the Stark effect in the non-relativistic Hydrogen atom. One approach consists of considering an algebraic representation of a cutoff 3D harmonic oscillator where the matrix representation of the operators r2 and p2 are diagonalized to define useful bases to obtain the matrix representation of the Hamiltonian in a simple form in terms of diagonal matrices. The second approach is based on the U(4) dynamical algebra which consists of the addition of a scalar boson to the 3D harmonic oscillator space keeping constant the total number of bosons. This allows the kets associated with the different subgroup chains to be linked to energy, coordinate and momentum representations, whose involved branching rules define the discrete variable representation. Both methods, although originating from the harmonic oscillator basis, provide different convergence tests due to the fact that the associated discrete bases turn out to be different. These approaches provide powerful tools to obtain the matrix representation of 3D general Hamiltonians in a simple form. In particular, the Hydrogen atom interacting with a static electric field is described. To accomplish this task, the diagonalization of the exact matrix representation of the Hamiltonian is carried out. Particular attention is paid to the subspaces associated with the quantum numbers n=2,3 with m=0.

ZusammenfassungÖkonomische Forschung zu rechtlichen Themen ist häufig stark an den Auswirkungen einer materiell-rechtlichen Regel oder dem Verteilungsergebnis eines Rechtsstreits orientiert. Das wird dem Untersuchungsgegenstand nicht gerecht, da für das Recht der Weg zur Generierung eines solchen materiellen Ergebnisses konstitutiv ist. Interdisziplinäre Forschung muss sich daher auf Verfahren, Form und Durchsetzung ebenso einlassen wie auf materielle Regelungen. Für die Ordnung der Wirtschaft sind dabei die bislang vernachlässigten privatrechtlichen (nicht öffentlich-rechtlichen) Mechanismen besonders interessant: Privatrechtliche Institutionen ordnen das Zusammenleben in ähnlicher Form wie Märkte Angebot und Nachfrage koordinieren. Werden die Eigenrationalitäten des (Verfahrens-)Rechts respektiert, von denen einige im Beitrag vorgestellt werden, kann ökonomische Forschung einen Beitrag zur Lösung zentraler rechtspolitischer Debatten leisten, etwa zur Aufladung privatrechtlicher Mechanismen mit öffentlichen Ordnungsansprüchen zur Verfahrensdauer und zum Zugang zum Recht.

Abstract:

Properties of Stark resonant states are studied in two exactly solvable systems. These resonances are shown to form a biorthogonal system with respect to a pairing defined by a contour integral that selects states with outgoing wave boundary conditions. Analytic expressions are derived for the pseudonorm, dipole moment, and coupling matrix elements which relate systems with different strengths of the external field. All results are based on explicit calculations made possible by a newly designed integration method for combinations of Airy functions representing resonant eigenstates. Generalizations for one-dimensional systems with short-range potentials are presented, and relations are identified which are likely to hold in systems with three spatial dimensions.

Abstract:

Purpose This preliminary study explored relationships between form and function in prelinguistic vocalizations to increase our understanding of early communicative development and to provide potential clinical implications for early communicative assessment and intervention. Method Twenty typically developing infants—5 infants in each of 4 age groups, from 3 to 20 months of age—were included. Vocalizations from these infants had previously been categorized for their form (Nathani, Ertmer, & Stark, 2006) and function (Stark, Bernstein, & Demorest, 1993) characteristics. In the present study, cross-classification tabulations between form and function were conducted to examine relationships between vocalization types and their apparent uses. Results As anticipated, earlier developing forms were mostly associated with earlier developing functions, and later developing forms were mostly associated with later developing functions. However, there were some exceptions such that some forms were associated with a variety of functions, and vice versa. Conclusions The results suggest that some forms are more tightly coupled to function than others in the prelinguistic and early linguistic period. Preliminary implications for developmental theory, future research, and clinical applications are discussed. Larger, longitudinal studies with typical and atypical populations and stricter methodological controls are needed to validate these findings.

Die Alzheimer-Demenz ist die häufigste Form altersbedingter neuro-degenerativer Erkrankungen. Neben wenigen genetischen sind zahlreiche nicht-genetische Risikofaktoren bekannt, die den Krankheitsbeginn und -verlauf signifikant beeinflussen. Die molekularen Ursachen und kausalen Zusammenhänge sind allerdings weitgehend unbekannt. Wir haben ein Mausmodell etabliert, das mittels pränataler Infektion eine langfristige Dysregulation inflammatorischer Modulatoren verursacht und damit einen zentralen altersassoziierten Faktor moduliert. Diese frühe Immunstimulation hat einen stark beschleunigenden Effekt auf altersbedingte Neuropathologien. Falls zu dieser pränatalen auch noch eine systemische Infektion im Alter kommt, wird dieser Effekt signifikant verstärkt. Diese Daten zeigen, dass eine pränatale Infektion das Risiko einer Demenzerkrankung stark erhöhen und in Kombination mit einer zusätzlichen Immunstimulation im Alter ein kritischer Auslöser einer progressiven Neuropathologie darstellen kann.

Wissenschaft als diskursive Praxis ist stark durch die Auseinandersetzung über sprachliche Texte dominiert. Fragebögen enthalten Items in sprachlicher Form – und noch dort wo einmal ein Bild präsentiert wird, handelt es sich nur um einen Auslöser, der dann zu einer sprachlich-symbolischen Aktion führt (Ankreuzen einer Antwort, sprachlicher Kurzkommentar) etc. Auch in der qualitativen Forschung ist lange die sprachliche Form von Interviews (Tiefeninterviews, Focus-Gruppen-Interviews) im Zentrum des Forschungsinteresses gestanden. Erst in den letzten Jahren wird der Einsatz von visuellen Methoden in der qualitativen Forschung verstärkt diskutiert.

Abstract The series of uprising that swept from Wall Street in 2011 to Hong Kong in 2014 are described as embodying a “leaderless” form of organizing. With no centralized organizational structure, these contemporary movements are often thought to be a new form of politics that is far more participatory and spontaneous than the tradition of revolutionary communism inaugurated by the Bolsheviks in 1917. However, such a stark contrast suppresses the similarities between past and present revolts, and obscures how the experience of the former can still contribute to the latter.

Abstract:

In this paper, we employ the energy surface method to study a system of a two-level atom Bose–Einstein condensate coupled to a high-finesse optical cavity interacting with a single-mode electromagnetic field in the presence of the Stark-shift. The energy surface, the Phase transitions and the Berry phase of the two-level atom in Dicke model are obtained. Employing the Holstein–Primakoff representation of the angular momentum Lie algebra, the coupling line separation of the normal phase and the superradiant phase which occurs in a collection of fluorescent emitters (such as atoms), between a state containing few electromagnetic excitations are studied and a mean field description of the Dicke model is presented. We notice that in the thermodynamic limit, the energy surface takes a simple form for a direct description of the phase transition. Moreover, we show that the Stark-shift parameters and the atom–atom interactions can strongly affect the phase transition point. The results in the absence of the Stark-shift agree precisely with those obtained by Li, Liu and Zhou, who studied the same model using a different method.

AbstractCosmological simulations predict that dark matter halos with circular velocities lower than 30 km/s should have lost most of their neutral gas by heating of the ultra-violet background. This is in stark contrast with gas-rich galaxies such as e.g. Leo T, Leo P and Pisces A, which all have circular velocities of ~15 km/s (Ryan-Weber et al. 2008, Bernstein-Cooper et al. 2014, Tollerud et al. 2015). We show that when we include feedback from the first stars into our models, simulated dwarfs have very different properties at redshift 0 than when this form of feedback is not included. Including this Population-III feedback leads to galaxies that lie on the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation over the entire mass range of star forming dwarf galaxies, as well as reproducing a broad range of other observational properties.

Weiterhin soll gezeigt werden, welche erfolgreichen Interventionsmöglichkeiten künstlerische Therapien bieten, selbst wenn das eingesetzte Medium aufgrund klinischer Gegebenheiten nur in stark reduzierter Form zur Anwendung kommt. Cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) is phenotypically diverse, making classification difficult. This article explores the evolution of ideas regarding CL/P classification and includes the schemes described by Davis and Ritchie (1922) , Brophy (1923) , Veau (1931) , Fogh-Andersen (1943), Kernahan and Stark (1958) , Harkins et al. (1962) , Broadbent et al. (1968), Spina (1973) , and others. Based on these systems, a longhand structured form is proposed for describing CL/P in a way that is clear, comprehensive, and consistent. A complementary shorthand notation is also described to improve the utility and convenience of this structured form.

Die perforierende Keratoplastik war für über ein Jahrhundert der Goldstandard der Hornhauttransplantation. In jüngster Zeit haben hingegen lamellierende Techniken stark an Bedeutung gewonnen, bei welchen anstelle der kompletten Hornhaut gezielt einzelne Hornhautschichten transplantiert werden. Die Hauptvorteile gegenüber der perforierenden Keratoplastik umfassen je nach Art der verwendeten Technik entweder eine reduzierte Rate endothelialer Abstoβungsreaktionen oder eine beschleunigte visuelle Rehabilitation. Die Indikationen sowie die Vor- und Nachteile der einzelnen Therapiemodalitäten werden in Form einer kurzen Übersichtsarbeit dargestellt.

Abstract:

This paper presents some of the findings of a study comparing the form and function of two traditional markets on the Arabian Peninsula: Souq Mutrah in Muscat, Oman, and Souq Waqif in Doha, Qatar. Globalization and rapid urbanization characterize both Doha and Muscat, which share similar historical origins as coastal settlements despite stark differences in topography; Oman is mountainous, whereas Qatar is flat. We investigate the urban morphology, land use and function of the two souqs using several representational techniques typical of morphological research, including space syntax analysis. The purpose is to develop a deeper understanding of (1) the evolution of space and form in these marketplaces over time, and (2) the possible implications for their functioning as urban places. The analysis demonstrates the critical importance of the contextual relations at the macro- and micro-scale of the urban environment for understanding the complex nature of these souqs as places today, helping to deepen our knowledge about traditional markets in the Middle East.

In the age of information technology, the sale of information in the form of searchable databases has become a multibillion-dollar industry. In the United States, compilations of data have always presented a difficult problem: Although such works are often assembled at considerable cost and are extremely valuable to commerce and science, they do not exhibit the modicum of creativity usually required for copyrightability. In stark contrast, the European Union has set a global agenda by putting into effect a new form of intellectual property protection for databases, the terms of which could significantly affect the interests of database producers and consumers throughout the world. This article provides a summary of U.S. and international laws used to protect databases and describes the pressures that are affecting U.S. alternatives. Because both information and technology are now subject to porous international boundaries, the authors propose a change in U.S. law.

Abstract:

Zusammenfassung. Wie stark sich psychische Auffälligkeiten bei Vorschulkindern mit traumatischen Erlebnissen entwickeln, hängt stark von Merkmalen und dem Verhalten ihrer Bezugspersonen ab. Es ist noch unklar, in welcher Form sich traumatische Erlebnisse und Merkmale der Pflegefamilie auf die psychische Gesundheit eines Kindes auswirken. In dieser Studie wurden das Stresserleben und das Erziehungsverhalten der Pflegeeltern als Moderatoren und Mediatoren im Kontext traumatischer Erfahrungen untersucht. Pflegeeltern von 286 Kindern zwischen 3 und 7 Jahren nahmen an einer postalischen oder Onlinebefragung teil. Die Ergebnisse deuten auf Wechselwirkungen zwischen traumatischen Erfahrungen des Pflegekindes und dem Stressniveau sowie dem Erziehungsverhalten der Pflegeeltern hin. Während Weitschweifigkeit und Nachsichtigkeit in der Erziehung den Effekt des Traumas auf die externalisierenden Auffälligkeiten des Kindes moderiert, hat Stresserleben einen mediierenden Effekt zwischen traumatischen Erlebnissen und einer internalisierenden oder externalisierenden Problematik. Die erzielten Ergebnisse unterstreichen die Notwendigkeit einer systematischen Vorbereitung und Unterstützung der Pflegeeltern von Kindern mit traumatischen Erfahrungen. Vorrangig von Kommunen und Stiftungen angewandt, ist diese Form der Grundstücksteilung in vielen entwickelten Ländern die typische Form des Immobilienerwerbs. Vor dem Hintergrund des niedrigen Zinsumfelds suchen institutionelle Investoren nach alternativen Anlagevehikeln mit zufriedenstellenden Rendite-Risiko-Verhältnissen. Diese Arbeit untersucht die Marktakzeptanz des deutschen Erbbaurechts sowie mögliche Einflüsse aus Großbritannien als einem der höchstentwickelten Märkte für Erbbaurecht. Unsere Analyse zeigt, dass das Erbbaurecht ein sinnvolles Nischenprodukt für institutionelle Investoren zur Generierung von Mehrwerten darstellt. Der individuelle Nutzen für Investoren mit deutschem Investmentfokus hängt jedoch stark von der konkreten Vertragsgestaltung ab. Der britische Markt stellt für deutsche Immobilienfonds aktuell aufgrund der höheren Liquidität und Transparenz des Marktes eine geeignetere Anlageallokation dar.

Using Anthony Giddens’s concepts of structure and agency, the author analyzes interview data to explore how the respondents express their agency within the structural constraints of refugee life. In light of the research findings, it is argued that Afghan refugees form a diverse and heterogeneous population, in stark contrast to the essentialized and homogenous portrayals of silent, suffering victims of circumstance as found in popular media and policy discourse.

Hintergrund: Aus internationalen Studien geht hervor, dass ein Großteil der Patienten Aus Gründen der besseren Lesbarkeit wird im Text ausschließlich die männliche Form verwendet. Dies schließt die weibliche Form mit ein., die auf Intensivstationen behandelt werden, moderate bis starke Schmerzen beschreibt. Erwiesen ist auch, dass nicht erkannte und ungenügend therapierte Schmerzen schwere körperliche und seelische Belastungen hervorrufen können. Eines der wichtigsten Therapieziele im Intensivbereich ist deshalb das frühzeitige und sichere Erkennen von Schmerzen, was bei stark bewusstseinsbeeinträchtigten Patienten eine große Herausforderung darstellt. Ziel: Das Ziel dieser Studie ist es, aufzuzeigen, wie mit einer standardisierten Fremdeinschätzung von Schmerzen mit dem Zurich Observation Pain Assessment (ZOPA©) diese Lücke geschlossen werden kann. Methode: Anhand einer theoriegeleiteten interpretativen Fallstudie wird der Einsatz von ZOPA© in der Praxis und dessen Einfluss auf das Schmerzmanagement beschrieben. Ergebnisse: Insgesamt wurden 126 Einzelerfassungen bei einer Intensivpatientin mit einer schweren Subarachnoidalblutung analysiert, wovon 19 Erfassungen auf Schmerz hinweisende Verhaltensmerkmale zeigten. In drei Vierteln dieser Fälle wurden umgehend schmerzlindernde Maßnahmen eingeleitet. Auf der betreffenden Intensivstation wird ZOPA© seit fünf Jahren angewandt, neben der analgetischen Basismedikation sind zusätzliche Analgetika als Bedarfsmedikation verordnet, was Pflegenden den Freiraum lässt, ihre Verantwortung im Schmerzmanagement wahrzunehmen. Schlussfolgerung: Die Fallstudie zeigt, dass sich ZOPA© als geeignetes Fremdeinschätzungsinstrument erweist, anhand dessen Schmerzen frühzeitig erkannt und behandelt bzw. Schmerzsituationen vermieden werden könnten.

Microorganisms form surface-attached communities, termed biofilms, which can serve as protection against host immune reactions or antibiotics.Bacillus subtilisbiofilms contain TasA as major proteinaceous component in addition to exopolysaccharides. In stark contrast to the initially unfolded biofilm proteins of other bacteria, TasA is a soluble, stably folded monomer, whose structure we have determined by X-ray crystallography. Subsequently, we characterized in vitro different oligomeric forms of TasA by NMR, EM, X-ray diffraction, and analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC) experiments. However, by magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR on live biofilms, a swift structural change toward only one of these forms, consisting of homogeneous and protease-resistant, β-sheet–rich fibrils, was observed in vivo. Thereby, we characterize a structural change from a globular state to a fibrillar form in a functional prokaryotic system on the molecular level.

Abstract This article investigates the textual basis of the kṛṣṇāṣṭamīvrata, an observance first attested in the tenth chapter of the Śivadharmaśāstra. Given the great variety in readings of the versions contained in manuscripts that are of distinctly variegated geographical provenance and age, it is argued that at least during the 6th to 7th centuries—and even possibly later—the kṛṣṇāṣṭamīvrata had not yet developed a consistent form. The variable form of this particular vrata stands in stark contrast to its Vaiṣṇavite precursors that at the time of composition of the Śivadharmaśāstra had already developed into a standardized, canonical form. Hence, we argue, the regional variation of the manuscripts is indicative of a living, widespread Śaivite tradition that gives rise to different lines of transmission. Since the chief aim of this contribution is to display and study this variation, the kernel of this article consists of a ‘comparative edition’ of the tenth chapter of Śivadharmaśāstra, furnished with translation and philological commentary.

There are currently no validated approaches to promote functional recovery after ICH. Research in stroke recovery and rehabilitation has largely focused on ischemic stroke, but given the stark differences in the pathophysiology between ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, it is possible that strategies to rehabilitate the brain in distinct stroke subtypes will be different. Here, we review our current understanding of recovery after primary intracerebral hemorrhage with the intent to provide a framework to promote novel, stroke-subtype specific approaches.

In its anonymous reviewof Christina Rossetti'sSpeaking Likenesses(1874), theAcademynotes rather hopelessly: “this will probably be one of the most popular children's books this winter. We wish we could understand it” (606). The reviewer – who later dwells on the “uncomfortable feeling” generated by this children's tale and its accompanying images – still counts as the most generous among the largely puzzled and horrified readership of Rossetti's story about three sets of girls experiencing violence and failure in their respective fantasy worlds (606). While clearly such dystopic plots are not out of place in Victorian literature about children, something about Rossetti's unusual narrative bothered her contemporaries. John Ruskin, for instance, bluntly wondered how Rossetti and Arthur Hughes, who illustrated the story, together could “sink so low” (qtd. in Auerbach and Knoepflmacher 318). In any case, the book still sold on the Christmas market, and a few months later, Rossetti would publishAnnus Domini, a benign pocketbook of daily prayers that stands in stark contrast to the grim prose ofSpeaking Likenesses.It is therefore tempting to cast this work of children's fiction as a strange anomaly in Rossetti's oeuvre, which from the 1870s, beginning withAnnus Domini, to her death in 1894, became almost exclusively dominated by devotional prose and poetry. In contrast, I argue in the following essay thatSpeaking Likenessespoints to a widespread interest throughout Rossetti's writing – but especially in her most well-known poems fromGoblin Market and Other Poems(1862) andA Prince's Progress(1866) – in alternative modes of sociality that refract a conceptual preoccupation with likeness, rather than difference. Following traditions of critical thought that have paid increasing attention to relations that resist oppositional logic – Stephanie Engelstein and Eve Kosovsky Sedgwick's late work comes to mind here – I establish the primacy of a horizontal axis of similarity in bothSpeaking Likenessesand Rossetti's most canonical poem, “Goblin Market.” For Rossetti, the lure of similarity, or minimal difference, manifests itself most often in siblinghood and more specifically, sisterhood, the dominant kinship relation throughout her lyrics fromGoblin Market and Other Poems. Sisterhood anchors the title poem I will examine in this essay, as well as shorter verses such as “Noble Sisters” and “Sister Maude.” At issue in such relations of likeness is the discreteness of a (typically) feminine self. For Rossetti, shunning oppositional structures of desire and difference that typically produce individuation (exemplified in the heterosexual couple form and the titles of her uneasy lyrics “He and She” and “Wife to Husband”) allows for a new (albeit perilous) space to carve out one's particularity as a gendered being.

ABSTRACT KVP40 is a T4-related phage, composed of 386 open reading frames (ORFs), that has a broad host range. Here, we overexpressed, purified, and biophysically characterized two of the proteins encoded in the KVP40 genome, namely, gp5 and ORF334. Homology-based comparison between KVP40 and its better-characterized sister phage, T4, was used to estimate the two KVP40 proteins' functions. KVP40 gp5 shared significant homology with T4 gp5 in the N- and C-terminal domains. Unlike T4 gp5, KVP40 gp5 lacked the internal lysozyme domain. Like T4 gp5, KVP40 gp5 was found to form a homotrimer in solution. In stark contrast, KVP40 ORF334 shared no significant homology with any known proteins from T4-related phages. KVP40 ORF334 was found to form a heterohexamer with KVP40 gp5 in solution in a fashion nearly identical to the interaction between the T4 gp5 and gp27 proteins. Electron microscope image analysis of the KVP40 gp5-ORF334 complex indicated that it had dimensions very similar to those of the T4 gp5-gp27 structure. On the basis of our biophysical characterization, along with positional genome information, we propose that ORF334 is the ortholog of T4 gp27 and that it plays the role of a linker between gp5 and the phage baseplate.

Darüber hinaus sagt eine Fettleber die Erkrankungswahrscheinlichkeit für Typ-2-Diabetes und Atherosklerose voraus, was eine kausale Rolle der Fettleber in der Pathogenese dieser Erkrankungen impliziert. Folgerichtig zielen Strategien zur Prävention und Therapie der Fettleber darauf hin, frühzeitig zu handeln. Dabei ist zu beachten, dass nicht nur eine genaue und frühzeitige Diagnose einer Fettleber gestellt wird, wie sie es zur Zeit nichtinvasiv mittels der Protonen-Magnetresonz-Spektroskopie möglich ist, sondern auch der NASH, der malignen Form der Fettleber.

Die Pathophysiologie und Therapie dieser Entität wird kurz beschrieben, wobei man beachten muss, dass im Kindesalter die Ätiologie der Addison-Krise alters- und geschlechtsspezifisch ist. Die Familienanamnese der Patientin ist stark belastet mit Autoimmunopathien. Auch bei ihr konnte ein Autoimmungeschehen diagnostiziert werden. Dies in Form einer Polyendokrinopathie mit Autoimmunadrenalitis und Zöliakie. Unter einer Erhaltungstherapie mit Florinef® (Mineralkortikoid), Hydrocorton® (Hydrocortison) und glutenfreier Diät ist die Patientin heute symptomfrei.

The most brilliant part of re-visiting Engels, were the stark reminders, sometimes paragraph by paragraph, of key, essential truths that remain valid today in 2020 regarding new (perhaps old, but now more visible) forms of housewifisation, unto which SARS-CoV2 has shown a mirror to every person who has ever concerned themselves with gender in-balance, lay person to expert. This paper is about justifying those claims as essential truths by drawing modern parallels and also intends to generate a discussion on the form of the family and societal organisation which would support human flourishing, regardless of gender by formulating a new, post-COVID gender order.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDas komplexe regionale Schmerzsyndrom (CRPS) und die Inaktivitätsosteoporose rufen am Knochen eine lokalisierte Osteoporose hervor. Radiologisch ähneln sich die Entitäten stark, wenngleich die Veränderungen beim CRPS deutlich stärker vorhanden sind als bei der Inaktivitätsosteoporose. Entscheidendes Merkmal zur Differenzierung sind Anamnese und klinischer Befund – hier vor allem die Weichteilveränderungen wie Schwellung, Überwärmung, Hyperhidrose, Verfärbung der Haut, die in dieser Form bei einer Inaktivitätsosteoporose nicht zu erwarten sind. Therapeutisch kommt bei beiden Krankheitsbildern eine multifaktorielle Therapie in Betracht, bestehend aus frühfunktioneller Beübung und Mobilisation, Training der Muskulatur sowie ergänzender medikamentöser Therapie mit Bisphosphonaten. Insbesondere beim CRPS spielen auch die Säulen der multimodalen Schmerz- und Verhaltenstherapie eine wichtige Rolle.

Zusammenfassung Gegenstand und Ziel Zur Überprüfung der Eignung von Standardaquarien zur dauerhaften Haltung von Zierfischen wurden in einer Gruppe von Standardaquarien mit 54 Litern Inhalt der Sauerstoffverbrauch und -eintrag gemessen. Material und Methoden Die Einwirkungen simulierter definierter Störungen (Anfängerfehler wie übermäßige Futtergabe, mangelnde Filterreinigung, unterschiedliche Oberflächenbewegung, Bedeckung der Wasseroberfläche mit Pflanzen) auf den Sauerstoffverbrauch im Aquarium wurden im stark mit Fischen besetzten Aquarium und im vereinfachten Modellaquarium quantitativ ermittelt. Ergebnisse Den größten Sauerstoffverbrauch zeigten neben dem im Versuch nicht quantifizierbaren Verbrauch der Einrichtung (Bodengrund, Wasserpflanzen, Bakterien, reduzierte Substanzen) der Stoffwechsel der Fische, der mit der Futterdosis stark anstieg, sowie in geringem Maße der oxidative Umbau von Stickstoff in Form von Ammonium zu Nitrat. Der Sauerstoffeintrag wurde maßgeblich durch die Bedeckung der Wasseroberfläche und die Wasserbewegung beeinflusst. Schlussfolgerung und klinische Relevanz Die Ergebnisse erlauben erstmals quantitative Voraussagen zur Interaktion von Fischbesatz und Sauerstoffhaushalt in eingerichteten handelsüblichen Standardaquarien. Selbst unter den im Versuch eingestellten Bedingungen (erhöhter Besatz, mangelnde Filterhygiene, übermäßige Futtergabe) erwiesen sich alle Aquarien als geeignet für die dauerhafte Haltung von Zierfischen. Es ist jedoch darauf zu achten, dass die Wasseroberfläche frei von Bedeckung und ständig gut bewegt ist. Bei der Fütterung sollte das Futter eher in mehreren kleinen Portionen als in großen Portionen gegeben werden.

Abstract:

In this article, I specify and historicize the modes of communication that were at play among practitioners of contact improvisation+ and between the dancers and their audiences throughout the 1970s and into the early 1980s. I argue that contact improvisation's turn away from dance as a performed visual medium and toward the tactile experience of the participants exceeds a phenomenological reading and instead needs to be considered in light of anarchist theories of mutual assistance in which group behavior supports individual development. At the same time, however, Steve Paxton, the founder of the form, became concerned precisely with its opacity for an audience. I locate this ambivalent engagement with the performance of a participatory action in the edited video recordings that Paxton made together with Lisa Nelson, Nancy Stark Smith, and Steve Christiansen. These mediated videos, aligned with the rise of video art, paradoxically aim to spark a stronger connection than Paxton thought was possible during the live demonstrations of the form.

Abstract:

Special economic zones (SEZs) and gated communities both constitute ‘spaces of exception’, but have rarely been analysed together. As both processes have empirically converged in the form of mixed-use urban enclaves, I connect disparate literatures to understand the fragmented and exclusive nature of the Philippines’ economic development in general, and Metro Manila’s urbanization trajectory in particular. Based on grounded qualitative research, I explicate the rise of ‘spaces of exception 2.0’ that form globally connected but locally disembedded wealthy enclaves. I show how the integration of the Philippines into global capital flows, its historically grown ‘anti-developmental’ state, and the rise of a powerful real estate sector together have led to a proliferation of exclusive and exceptional spaces. The contemporary enclave spaces epitomize an urban and national development model of ‘exclusive development’, based on spatial processes of post-industrial capital accumulation in enclosed spaces, presenting a stark contrast with discourses on inclusive development.

Abstract:

Violent deaths stand out in stark relief against the contemporary social climate of controlled private death and grieving. Both uncontrolled and public violent deaths call into question some of our most fundamental cultural values and prompt spontaneous rituals to publicly express individual and collective grief. We refer to these new rituals as spontaneous memorialization and to the impromptu shrines that result from this memorialization as spontaneous memorials. In this article, we introduce both concepts, delineate the characteristics of this emerging American mourning ritual and use it to illustrate our contention that death ritual is important in the contemporary United States but that it is changing form in response to the needs of a changing society.
