Abstract:
Ten male collegiate swimmers (age = 20.2 ± 1.4 years, height = 184.6 ± 5.8 cm, mass = 82.9 ± 9.3 kg) performed 3 swimming relay step starts, which incorporated a one or two-step approach, and a no-step relay start. Time to 10 m was not significantly shorter between step and no-step starts. A double-step start increased horizontal takeoff velocity by 0.2 m/s. A single-step together start decreased vertical takeoff velocity by 0.2 m/s but increased takeoff height by 0.16 m. Subjects were more upright at takeoff by 4°, 2°, and 5° in the double-step, single-step apart, and single-step together starts, respectively, than in the no-step start. Entry angle was steeper by 2°, entry orientation was steeper by 3°, and entry vertical velocity was faster by 0.3 m/s in the single-step together start. Restricting step length by 50% had little effect on step starts with the exceptions that horizontal velocity was significantly reduced by 0.1 m/s in the double-step start and vertical takeoff velocity was increased by 0.2 m/s in the single-step together start. These data suggested that step starts offered some performance improvements over the no-step start, but these improvements were not widespread and, in the case of the double-step start, were dependent on the ability to take longer steps.

Abstract:
Background The average cost of running an operating room (OR) is approximately $37.00 a minute. Therefore, every effort should be made to start in a timely manner. There are several factors at play that can cause OR delays. Attaining consistent start times is a multidisciplinary task, which requires good communication and rewards for efficiency. Methods At our institution, a “star system” was implemented to improve compliance with timely start times. All OR staff (scrub tech, OR nurse, anesthesiologist, and physician) get 1 star for every on time start. Once a person attains 10 stars, they are awarded a $20 gift card to a local bakery/coffee shop. Results There was a significant difference in the 3 months pre- and post-implementation of the star system in regard to starting on time (54% vs. 71%, P-value .047), and there were significantly less late starts within 6-10 minutes (14% vs. 4%, P-value = <.01). There was no statistically significant difference in late starts >11 minutes or when comparing days of the week. The most common reasons for delay are as follows: surgeon running late (23%), anesthesiologist tardiness (11%), patient is late (9%), preoperative orders, or test not completed (7%). Conclusion The significant increase in the number of cases that start on time after implementation of the star system leads us to believe that late start times are multifactorial, and that incentives are a positive way to encourage the OR team to start on time.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We have cloned and sequenced the 3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase-encoding gene (bdhA) from Rhizobium (Sinorhizobium) meliloti. The gene has an open reading frame of 777 bp that encodes a polypeptide of 258 amino acid residues (molecular weight 27,177, pI 6.07). The R. meliloti Bdh protein exhibits features common to members of the short-chain alcohol dehydrogenase superfamily. bdhA is the first gene transcribed in an operon that also includes xdhA, encoding xanthine oxidase/dehydrogenase. Transcriptional start site analysis by primer extension identified two transcription starts. S1, a minor start site, was located 46 to 47 nucleotides upstream of the predicted ATG start codon, while S2, the major start site, was mapped 148 nucleotides from the start codon. Analysis of the sequence immediately upstream of either S1 or S2 failed to reveal the presence of any known consensus promoter sequences. Although a ς54 consensus sequence was identified in the region between S1 and S2, a corresponding transcript was not detected, and a rpoN mutant of R. meliloti was able to utilize 3-hydroxybutyrate as a sole carbon source. The R. meliloti bdhA gene is able to confer uponEscherichia coli the ability to utilize 3-hydroxybutyrate as a sole carbon source. An R. meliloti bdhA mutant accumulates poly-3-hydroxybutyrate to the same extent as the wild type and shows no symbiotic defects. Studies with a strain carrying alacZ transcriptional fusion to bdhAdemonstrated that gene expression is growth phase associated.

Abstract:
In, conventional 3-stage start-up method of sensorless brushless direct current motor (BLDCM), the rotor is likely to jitter because rotor position cannot be obtained, and the motor is apt to lose step when it starts with load. These defects limit its use in engineering applications. In order to achieve smooth start in specific direction and guarantee start-up success rate with load, a start-up method based on improved inductance method and electromotive force (EMF) integration is proposed applying different voltage vectors according to rotor position interval judged by inductance method and determining integrator start-up time according to rotor initial position and the EMF. Experiments show that the method guarantees smooth acceleration and increases start-up success rate with load.

Abstract:
Fast-starts are brief, sudden accelerations used by fish during predatorprey encounters. The kinematics and performance of fish during fast-start manoeuvres have received a lot of attention since they may determine the outcome of predatorprey interactions in terms of feeding success or survival. We will discuss recent progress on (1) the kinematics of escape responses and feeding strikes, (2) the fast-start performance of species with different body morphologies and from different habitats, and (3) the functional significance of fast-start kinematics and performance within the context of predatorprey interactions.

Full text
Abstract:
The mechanical power output and hydrodynamic efficiency of northern pike, Esox lucius, during acceleration from rest (fast-start) are calculated from hydrodynamic theory for two kinematic patterns, C-starts (used in escape) and S-starts (used in prey capture). The Weihs model is employed and modified to calculate the mechanical power produced by a fish during a fast-start. A term is included for the power required to accelerate body sections laterally. Lateral deceleration of fish body sections and their associated added mass are expressed as an active process requiring energy expenditure or as a passive process requiring no energy expenditure. In addition, two methods of calculating useful power (the power used to accelerate the virtual mass of the fish, i.e. fish body mass + longitudinal added mass, in the direction of motion), one derived from the Weihs model and the second by summing the changes in kinetic energy of the virtual mass of the fish during a fast-start, are compared and found to give similar estimates of useful power (not significantly different; differences average 22 %). Comparisons of the kinematics and performance of C- and S-starts reveal that C-starts are consistently terminated after two tail flips (stages 1 and 2) whereas S-starts continue for 36 tail flips (stages 36). In addition, acceleration during C-starts is more rapid and velocities are higher (2.32.8 m s-1) than during S-starts (0.81.8 m s-1) over the first 100 ms. However, the peak velocities achieved during S-starts and C-starts are similar over the duration of a fast-start. The superior acceleration rates achieved during the initial stages of a C-start can be explained, in part, by the use of greater maximum angles of attack, higher lateral and perpendicular velocities and larger maximum forces by the caudal fin. Hydrodynamic efficiencies for fast-starts range from 0.16 to 0.39, values that are lower than those observed during either burst-and-coast or steady swimming. Efficiencies are lower for S-starts than for C-starts during the first two tail beats. S-start efficiencies increase with each subsequent tail flip and the maximum efficiencies realised are similar to those achieved during C-starts. Power output during C- and S-starts (449.0 and 394.9 W kg-1 muscle fibre, respectively) approaches the theoretical maximum for vertebrate striated muscle (500 W kg-1). Also, the inferred muscle stress is close to the predicted optimum for maximum power output, at 30 % of the maximum isometric stress recorded for isolated fast muscle fibres. These measurements suggest that fast-start performance is near a physiological limit and is probably constrained by muscle function. The superior acceleration rates achieved by C-starts over S-starts are explained in part by differences in hydrodynamic efficiency, whereas power outputs are similar.

Abstract:
In Sweden, there are three subjects that are mandatory to pass to be qualified for further studies (gymnasium) after year 9 of elementary school: English, Mathematics and Swedish. Sweden has a long tradition of teaching English as a foreign language in schools, from a very young age. However, municipalities and schools are given the freedom in Sweden to decide when to start teaching English, between age 7-10, which means that there could be a great difference between schools and different parts of the country. It also means that there are different reasons and discussions behind when and why students should start learning. The purpose of this paper is to investigate what reasons and discussions lie behind different schools’ decision of when to start teaching English. The head teachers and one teacher from three different types of schools were interviewed to find what their views were. The results look at whether the decision was based on research, if teachers were involved in the decision, whether they viewed positive or negative effects of an early language start, if there are any practical issues with an early start and whether or not different age starts affects an equal school for all. The four interviewees answered quite similarly to the questions with only some exceptions. The decision at all schools was to start English language instruction from year 1, in a playful manner with games, songs and rhymes. The general feeling at all schools seems to be that the earlier language instruction starts, the better. This assumption has not been based on any specific research, but rather something, that is considered a ‘universal truth’

Abstract:
How do returning college students navigate the rapidly diversifying landscape of higher education options available to them today? Adopting a life course perspective, I argue that the college persistence of non-traditional students must be understood within historical, institutional, and personal context. I use longitudinal survey data from approximately 750 respondents and 130 in-depth life history interviews from over 100 participants in the Resilience in Survivors of Katrina (RISK) Project to document college decision-making leading up to and following 2005’s Hurricane Katrina. Using mixed methods, I outline the limitations of traditional measures for capturing the winding college pathways and future college plans of America’s most disadvantaged college students. I also contribute to an emerging literature on mixed-methods data analysis in social science research. I find remarkable levels of persistent college aspiration and enrollment, long past normative time to degree and far into young adulthood. The diverse institutional landscape of non-selective postsecondary education offers many opportunities for a return to college, but also complicates the pathway to earning a credential. I describe how these economically-vulnerable students understand the meaning and value of a college degree, finding that economic necessity and the positive moral valence of college-going combine to support continued aspiration. While the logic of human capital investment dominates policy and academic discussions of college’s value, I find the symbolic meaning of a college degree also shapes aspirations and decision-making into adulthood, particularly for the students who struggle the most. For these students, “valuing” a college degree involves both economic and moral calculations.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with a new DC machine structure that can be used in an automotive Stop-Start starter application. A three-dimensional claw pole stator is proposed to replace the current stator in order to reduce its manufacturing cost. The claw pole machine topology is modeled by a reluctance network to take into account the saturation and the magnetic armature reaction. Thanks to its speed and precision, this model is then integrated in an optimization process to obtain an optimal machine. Finally, a prototype of a machine with DC claws is manufactured to show the feasibility of this topology. Moreover, an original model combining reluctance networks and solving the Laplace equation has been developed to overtake some difficulties related to modeling by reluctance network of electrical machines while taking into account the rotation

Abstract:
In this thesis we investigate the evolution of galaxies since z = 3. There are several methods to measure the star formation rate (SFR) of galaxies, they all however have drawbacks. Several studies have investigated the SFR at high redshifts using SFR tracers that suffer from uncertainties, either from the tracer used, or from the uncertainties correcting for the effects of dust. We have new measurements of the Ha emission line for a sample of galaxies at =~1; Ha is a more accurate SFR-tracer than other commonly used tracers, but until now had been technically difficult to measure at : > 0.85. We investigate methods to correct these observations for dust and we use these measurements to investigate the relation between SFR, stellar mass and colour. We find that there is a drop in the fraction of massive (M, > 1011 M.) star-forming galaxies at = < 0.9 and that the fraction of all galaxies that are star-forming drops steadily and significantly with redder (U — B) colours. We find that the M„-SFR (galaxy main sequence, GMS) is flatter than previously measured and that for the most massive galaxies, star formation shuts off abruptly at =~1.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A three-dimensional multiphase model has been developed to simulate the cold start processes in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). This model uniquely includes the water freezing in the membrane, the non-equilibrium mass transfer between the water in the ionomer and the water (vapour, liquid and ice) in the pore region of the catalyst layer (CL), and the water freezing and melting in the CL and gas diffusion layer (GDL). Numerical simulations have been conducted for a single PEMFC starting from different subzero temperatures to investigate both the failed and successful cold start processes. Numerical results indicate that the ohmic heat is the largest heating source at low cell voltages. It is observed that water freezes first in the cathode CL under the land, and ice melts first in the CLs under the flow channel, the melted water in the anode is also removed faster than in the cathode.

Abstract:
Reliably starting the engine during extremely cold ambient temperatures is one of the largest calibration and emissions challenges in engine development. Although cold-start conditions comprise only a small portion of an engine’s typical drive cycle, large amounts of hydrocarbon and particulate emissions are generated during this time, and the calibration of cold-start operation takes several months to complete. During the cold start period, results of previous cycle combustion event strongly influences the subsequent cycle due to variations in engine speed, residual fraction, residual wall film mass, in-cylinder charge and wall temperatures, and air flow distribution between cylinders. Include all these parameters in CFD simulation is critical in understanding the cold start process in transient and cumulative manner. Measured cold start data of a production four cylinder spark-ignition direct-injection engine was collected for this study with an ambient temperature of −30 °C. Three-dimensional transient engine flow, spray and combustion simulation over first 3 consecutive engine cycles is carried out to provide a better understandings of the cold-start process. Measured engine speed and 1D conjugate heat transfer model are used to capture realistic in-cylinder flow dynamics and transient wall temperatures for more accurate fuel-air mixing predictions. The CFD predicted cumulative heat release trend for the first 3 cycles matches the data from measured pressure analysis. The same observation can be made for the vaporized fuel mass as well. These observations are explained in the report.

Abstract:
Studies of livelihoods and food systems since the start of the global pandemic in 2020 have shown a consistent pattern: the primary risks to food and livelihood security are at the household level. Covid-19 is having a major impact on households’ production and access to quality, nutritious food, due to losses of income, combined with increasing food prices, and restrictions to movements of people, inputs and products. The studies included in this Research for Policy and Practice Report and supported by the Covid-19 Responses for Equity (CORE) Programme span several continents and are coordinated by leading research organisations with a detailed understanding of local food system dynamics and associated equity and livelihood issues in their regions: (1) the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on livelihoods in sub-Saharan Africa; (2) supporting small and medium enterprises, food security, and evolving social protection mechanisms to deal with Covid-19 in Pakistan; and (3) impact of Covid-19 on family farming and food security in Latin America: evidence-based public policy responses.

Guidati, Gianfranco, and Domenico Giardini. Verbundsynthese «Geothermie» des NFP «Energie». Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.46446/publikation_nfp70_nfp71.2020.4.de.

Abstract:

Zilberman, Mark. Shouldn’t Doppler 'De-boosting' be accounted for in calculations of intrinsic luminosity of Standard Candles? Intellectual Archive, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.32370/iaj.2569.

Full text
Abstract:
"Doppler boosting / de-boosting" is a well-known relativistic effect that alters the apparent luminosity of approaching/receding radiation sources. "Doppler boosting" alters the apparent luminosity of approaching light sources to appear brighter, while "Doppler de-boosting" alters the apparent luminosity of receding light sources to appear fainter. While "Doppler boosting / de-boosting" has been successfully accounted for and observed in relativistic jets of AGN, double white dwarfs, in search of exoplanets and stars in binary systems it was ignored in the establishment of Standard Candles for cosmological distances. A Standard Candle adjustment appears necessary for "Doppler de-boosting" for high Z, otherwise we would incorrectly assume that Standard Candles appear dimmer, not because of "Doppler de-boosting" but because of the excessive distance, which would affect the entire Standard Candles ladder at cosmological distances. The ratio between apparent (L) and intrinsic (Lo) luminosities as a function of redshift Z and spectral index α is given by the formula ℳ(Z) = L/Lo=(Z+1)^(α-3) and for Type Ia supernova as ℳ(Z) = L/Lo=(Z+1)^(-2). These formulas are obtained within the framework of Special Relativity and may require adjustments within the General Relativity framework.
