Abstract:
Leads are fundamental elements of the news story. This study follows an interdisciplinary approach, analyzing the lead through journalistic definitions and linguistic descriptions. The corpus was composed of 200 leads in English and Portuguese, collected from two American newspapers and two Brazilian newspapers, in two different periods: 12 to 14 September, 2001, and 29 and 30 November, 2001. Using genre analysis theory, leads are defined, in this dissertation, as a subgenre of the news story genre (Biber, 1988, Swales, 1990). Also it is possible to view the lead in analogy to Halliday`s (1985) concept of Theme. Finally, this research paper presents a tentative classification of the leads according to their structure and function, dividing them in four categories: objective, effect phrase, contextualized and intergenre. Statistic tests were applied to the corpus to investigate the variation regarding language, section, newspaper and period. Results point to majority of objective leads, especially in Portuguese. American leads present a variation related to the period of production, intergenre leads being the most frequent during the post-September 11 period. Comparative analysis of American and Brazilian leads shows that leads vary according to the section to which they are written. There is predominance of objective leads in the Business section, while Sports and Culture present more variety. There were also differences between Portuguese and English leads regarding the length of the leads.

Kojooyan, Jafari Hengameh. "Determination of the induction machine parameters from starting transient measurements." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/129407.

Full text
Abstract:
This Thesis study the parameters estimation of the induction machine with the single-cage and doublecage models, using the stator currents, voltages and mechanical speed from a starting transient. The dynamic equations of the induction machine are expressed in the synchronous reference frame because in this reference the values of the direct and quadrature currents have a slower variation than those in the other reference frames. This reference frame is important to facilitate the data filtering. The proposed method for the single-cage parameters estimation introduces an approximation of the rotor flux using the stator currents and voltages. It has been demonstrated in the thesis that this approximation improves the accuracy of the calculated parameters significantly. Two different methods to calculate the parameters have been developed. The first is based on the linear least-square method and the second on the resolving of a nonlinear system of equations. A detailed error study of the parameters and predicted behavior have been made in the thesis. An interesting result of the error study is that it is very important that the speed of the points be used in the calculations. It is very important to use the points with the maximum torque speed and points near the synchronous speed. The thesis presents the two first methods developed for parameters estimation of the induction machine with double-cage model using data from a starting transient. The other methods known in the literature use steady state data. Both methods use data from the point of maximum torque to the synchronous speed to calculate the parameters of a single-cage model, because the torque- and current-speed curves of this single-cage fit very well with the torque- and current-speed curves of the double-cage. Later, the first method uses a point with a speed near to zero speed and a point in the synchronous speed and other single-cage is calculated. With these two singlecages the impedances of three points are calculated and they are used to estimate the six parameters of the double-cage model solving a nonlinear system of equations. The second method, called instantaneous power method, uses the fact that the averaged transient torque has similar values to the steady-state torque in the mechanical transient region. Then, several impedance values are calculated for points with different speeds in this region, where the effects of the double-cage are more important. Finally, with impedance values in the synchronous speed and the maximum torque speed obtained with the regression method and impedance values obtained with the instantaneous power method, a set of non linear equations are defined. Their solution is the estimated parameters of the induction machine double-cage model.

Kheder, Abdul-Sameei Yaseen. "Starting high inertia, high friction loads from limited power sources." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184455.

Full text
Abstract:
At starting, electrical motors require large power and current. This may not be a problem in a large electrical system but it may be very severe for a limited power source like a solar array. If a direct approach is taken the array rating must be 5-6 times the motor rating in order to start the motor and its high inertia high friction load. Batteries have been used to store energy and supply that energy for starting. Batteries need maintenance and their low efficiency is a problem too. In this study a new type of controller has been suggested and developed for the use with D.C. motors. Computer simulation showed promising results. The controller uses the array power, which is equal to the rated power of the motor, for starting and for running condition. Experimental results showed that the theoretical results are applicable.

Cattani, Luca <1984&gt. "Educational mismathc in Italian an European labour markets (starting from the UK)." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2014. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/6456/.

Full text
Abstract:
The present doctoral thesis is structured as a collection of three essays. The first essay, “SOC(HE)-Italy: a classification for graduate occupations” presents the conceptual basis, the construction, the validation and the application to the Italian labour force of the occupational classification termed SOC(HE)-Italy. I have developed this classification under the supervision of Kate Purcell during my period as a visiting research student at the Warwick Institute for Emplyment Research. This classification links the constituent tasks and duties of a particular job to the relevant knowledge and skills imparted via Higher Education (HE). It is based onto the SOC(HE)2010, an occupational classification first proposed by Kate Purcell in 2013, but differently constructed. In the second essay “Assessing the incidence and wage effects of overeducation among Italian graduates using a new measure for educational requirements” I utilize this classification to build a valid and reliable measure for job requirements. The lack of an unbiased measure for this dimension constitutes one of the major constraints to achieve a generally accepted measurement of overeducation. Estimations of overeducation incidence and wage effects are run onto AlmaLaurea data from the survey on graduates career paths. I have written this essay and obtained these estimates benefiting of the help and guidance of Giovanni Guidetti and Giulio Pedrini. The third and last essay titled “Overeducation in the Italian labour market: clarifying the concepts and addressing the measurement error problem” addresses a number of theoretical issues concerning the concepts of educational mismatch and overeducation. Using Istat data from RCFL survey I run estimates of the ORU model for the whole Italian labour force. In my knowledge, this is the first time ever such model is estimated on such population. In addition, I adopt the new measure of overeducation based onto the SOC(HE)-Italy classification.

Borowiec, Anita. "New acrolein production route starting from alcohols mixtures over FeMo-based catalysts." Thesis, Lille 1, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016LIL10153/document.

Abstract:
Acrolein is the simplest unsaturated aldehyde, which - due to its high reactivity - finds applications as an intermediate in the chemical industry (e.g., for acrylic acid and methionine production). Recently, a worldwide demand increase of acrolein derivatives was observed, which is expected to continuously grow within the next years. However, nowadays acrolein is commercially obtained by propylene oxidation, where the raw material comes from fossil resources. This work proposes a new method of acrolein production starting from renewable feedstock – methanol and ethanol mixture. This reaction was approached by reaction conditions optimization (i.e. Design of Experiment method do decrease the number of catalytic tests and save time), FeMoOx modifications (e.g. various Mo/Fe ratios, calcination temperature, and basic elements addition) and a second catalyst utilization (e.g. single commercial oxides and silica-based materials) in order to balance the acid base properties

Hulme, Samantha-Jayne. "Applications of organometallic reagents in an approach to taxanes starting from glucose." Thesis, University of Leicester, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/29982.

Full text
Abstract:
This work continues previous studies carried out by the Jenkins group to produce taxanes from glucose and is split into two projects. The first investigates alkylation of cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylic acid mono(-)menthyl ester by deprotonation with LDA and treatment with a range of alkyl bromides and an iodide. The resulting crude products were converted to the corresponding methyl esters using diazomethane. (Fig. 8719A). In all cases both diastereoisomers were seen, but the stereoselectivity ranged from 7:1 to 32:1 depending upon the alkyl halide used. When the acid ester was treated with LDA followed by BnBr the major isomer isolated, after conversion to the methyl ester, was confirmed as the 1(R), 2(S) diastereoisomer by X-ray crystallography. The results of these stereoselectivity studies were compared to the ratios of alkylation products from treatment of cyclopentane-1, 2-dicarboxylic acid mono (+) menthyl ester with various alkyl halides as described in the literature. The aim of this project was to provide a C-ring with a methyl group at C-1 of the correct stereostructure for incorporation into a taxane skeleton - this could be achieved via a radical pathway based on a C -> ABC strategy. The second project investigated the addition of 3-bromo-2,4-dimethylpenta-1,3-diene to aldehydes. The diene was first treated with nBuLi to give a lithium-halogen exchange. Reaction with cyclohexane carboxaldehyde gave a mixture of the diene alcohol and allene alcohol in the ratio of 2.3:1. Addition of the lithiated diene to a suspension of CeCl3 before introduction to the aldehyde improved the ratio to >100:1. Other lanthanide (III) chlorides were also studied. (Fig. 8719B). Reaction of the lithiated diene to 2-benzoyloxy-2-(cyclohexyl)-ethanal in the presence of various lanthanide chlorides gave a mixture of both enantiomers of two diastereoisomers. The ratio of these diastereoisomers was dependent upon the nature of the lanthanide. CeCl3 was found to give the highest ratio. Using the knowledge gained from these model studies, it was attempted to add the lithiated diene in the presence of CeCl3 to the aldehyde group of a highly functionalised C-ring synthesised from glucose. Successful addition was not achieved, the reasons considered for this failure were local and distant steric hindrance. Alternative protecting groups to the bulky t butyldiphenylsilyl groups were sought and regression several steps back along the route allowed the introduction of small methyl protecting groups. The protected diol was advanced to a functionalised C-ring. Treatment with the lithiated diene in a suspension of CeCl3 allowed successful addition of the diene to the aldehyde. This product provided 4 of the 6 A-ring carbons and completed the top half of the B-ring. (Fig. 8719C).

Tetzlaff, Sasha, Jinelle Sperry, Bruce Kingsburg, and Brett DeGregorio. Captive-rearing duration may be more important than environmental enrichment for enhancing turtle head-starting success. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/41800.

Full text
Abstract:
Raising captive animals past critical mortality stages for eventual release (head-starting) is a common conservation tactic. Counterintuitively, post-release survival can be low. Post-release behavior affecting survival could be influenced by captive-rearing duration and housing conditions. Practitioners have adopted environmental enrichment to promote natural behaviors during head-starting such as raising animals in naturalistic enclosures. Using 32 captive-born turtles (Terrapene carolina), half of which were raised in enriched enclosures, we employed a factorial design to explore how enrichment and rearing duration affected post-release growth, behavior, and survival. Six turtles in each treatment (enriched or unenriched) were head-started for nine months (cohort one). Ten turtles in each treatment were head-started for 21 months (cohort two). At the conclusion of captive-rearing, turtles in cohort two were overall larger than cohort one, but unenriched turtles were generally larger than enriched turtles within each cohort. Once released, enriched turtles grew faster than unenriched turtles in cohort two, but we otherwise found minimal evidence suggesting enrichment affected post-release survival or behavior. Our findings suggest attaining larger body sizes from longer captive-rearing periods to enable greater movement and alleviate susceptibility to predation (the primary cause of death) could be more effective than environmental enrichment alone in chelonian head-starting programs where substantial predation could hinder success.

Advocates have long raised concerns about the potential for partner violence after a spouse’s or partner’s return from prison, but few programs or policies exist to prevent it. In an era in which experiences of incarceration and reentry—and by extension, experiences of a partner’s or coparent’s incarceration and reentry—are commonplace in low-income urban communities, the safety of families reuniting after a prison stay merits serious attention. The current study examines qualitative data from 167 reentering men and their partners to identify contextual influences on post-prison partner violence. Insights from the data offer a valuable starting point for future research and for considering how prevention could effectively target economic, physical, social, and cognitive conditions at multiple social-ecological levels.

Abstract:
The paper draws on definitional ideas presented in the book ‘Energy Access and Forced Migration’ (Grafham 2020) and builds on analytical work from our doctoral research. The definitions presented in the following sections are intended as starting points for discussion, rather than representing formally formal terms. It is hoped that over time, such definitions can evolve as an ‘industry standard’ lexicon for humanitarian energy policy and practice. We welcome feedback and discussion of these ideas to further support the development of the humanitarian energy sector.

Understanding Achievement in Numeracy Among Primary School Children in Ethiopia: Evidence from RISE Ethiopia Study. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-rise-wp_2021/071.

Abstract:
Ethiopia has succeeded in rapidly expanding access to primary education over the past two decades. However, learning outcomes remain low among primary school children and particularly among girls and children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Starting with a systematic review of quantitative studies on the determinants of learning outcomes among primary school children in Ethiopia, this study then examined key determinants of students’ numeracy achievement over the 2018-19 school year. The study focused on Grade 4 children (N=3,353) who are part of an on-going longitudinal study. The two questions that guided this study are: what are the key determinants of numeracy achievement at Grade 4 in primary schools in Ethiopia, and how does our current empirical study contribute to understanding achievement differences in numeracy among primary school children in Ethiopia? We employed descriptive and inferential statistics to examine factors that determine differences in numeracy scores at the start and end of the school year, as well as determinants of numeracy scores at the end of the school year conditional on achievement at the start of the school year. We examined differences across gender, region, and rural-urban localities. We also used ordinary least squares and school ‘fixed effects’ approaches to estimate the key child, household and school characteristics that determine numeracy scores in Grade 4. The findings revealed that boys significantly outperformed girls in numeracy both at the start and end of the 2018/19 school year, but the progress in numeracy scores over the school year by boys was similar to that of girls. Besides, students in urban localities made a slightly higher progress in numeracy over the school year compared to their rural counterparts. Students from some regions (e.g., Oromia) demonstrated higher progress in numeracy over the school year relative to students in other regions (e.g., Addis Ababa). Key child (e.g., age, health, hours spent per day studying at home) and school- and teacher-related characteristics (e.g., provision of one textbook per subject for each student, urban-rural school location, and teachers’ mathematics content knowledge) were found to be significantly associated with student progress in numeracy test scores over the school year. These findings are discussed based on the reviewed evidence from the quantitative studies in Ethiopia.

Abstract:
This document describes the industrial application, on which the developments of the project are implemented, and the CFD set-up. The developments are implemented over six analysis cases with increasing complexity starting from a 2D geometry with mean wind inflow to a 3D geometry with turbulent inflow and real-time shape optimization. The application represents the CAARC tall building model, which has served as a benchmark model for many studies since the 1970’s when it was first developed. Base moments (bending and torsional moments) of the building are extracted for validation by comparison of the results with the benchmark study. Page 3 of 19 Deliverable 7.1

Abstract:
This note brings together lessons from the IDBs and other institutions efforts to adapt a skills taxonomy for Latin America and the Caribbean countries. These efforts have focused primarily on the ability to gather and make use of labor market information on skills demand from non-traditional data sources like online job vacancies. Most of these efforts have used the European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations (ESCO) taxonomy to underpin the identification and classification of skills. This note is intended to be a starting point and set of considerations for policymakers who may be considering, or already embarking on, similar efforts to use ESCO or other taxonomical structures to help better analyze, understand and use skills-level information for decision making. It also seeks to motivate the need for additional classification systems that help governments take stock of its citizens skills in increasingly complex and rapidly changing labor markets.
