Abstract:
The chapter of the book "China in the Baltic States – from a Cause of Hope to Anxiety" gives an overview of the changing Sino-Estonian relations from the consolidation of diplomatic ties in 1991 until the present. It examines the security implications these ties have started to pose for Estonia and NATO, while underlining the relative insignificance of the bilateral China-Estonia financial and trade ties. Analysing public opinion polls, this chapter outlines the risk that perceptions of China may become increasingly divergent between Estonian and non-Estonian speakers, with the former perceiving China as more of a threat than the latter. This might translate into a future security implication from the standpoint of domestic cohesiveness. Taking into account imminent risks, including Chinese surveillance technology on Estonia’s border crossings, and dubious infrastructure projects still in air, such as the Tallinn-Helsinki tunnel in the Gulf of Finland, the suggestion is made for the Estonian government to start formulating its independent China strategy, to map out the remaining areas for cooperation, and draw the boundaries where collaboration can no longer take place.

Davies, Rachel. Mosaics Inspired by Nature. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781789942088.

Full text
Abstract:
A creative guide to making abstractmosaic designs inspired by nature, using the beauty and texture of slate and stone. The shapes, patterns and structures found in the natural world can provide a source of wonder and inspiration for mosaic artists. Mosaics do not have to be made from tiles and then grouted, but instead they can be full of texture, incorporating a whole array of materials which hold connections to nature and to particular places. The subtle beauty of stone surfaces gives the work an organic feel, creating beautiful abstract designs. Not only are these materials attractive but preparing them is an enjoyable task in itself. In this book, experienced artist Rachel Davies shares the methods she uses in her mosaic practice. Starting with tools, materials and cutting techniques, discover adhesive and substrate options, and get to know the various materials and how to use them creatively. Supported by step-by-step photos, follow a series of exercises and suggestions to explore your interests and develop your own designs. With a focus on three of her own mosaics, inspired by seaweed, lichen and bark, Rachel walks you through her process to show how a piece of art develops from start to finish. Beautifully illustrated with photographs of Rachel’s own work as well as spotlights on seven other contemporary artists, find inspiration and get started on your own mosaic journey.

Full text
Abstract:
Startling signals are secondary defences that occur after the focal prey individual has been singled out for attack. Startling signals involve stimulation of the predator’s senses that cause it to delay or break off an attack. The assumption is that even a delay in attack can confer a survival advantage to the prey. This might occur because delay gives the prey an added opportunity to flee, or added opportunity for some other event to occur (perhaps the arrival of a predator of the predator) that causes the predator to break off the attack permanently. Startle signals influence the predator’s behaviour primarily through sensory and/or cognitive manipulation and must be separate from other mechanisms that may also influence predators’ behaviour so as to curtail, delay, or diminish an attack. We first consider the empirical evidence for the existence of such signals, before discussing the evolution of startle signals, the ecological aspects of this defence, co-evolutionary considerations, and suggestions for future research.

Abstract:
In Kavikarṇapūra’s poetics, rasa is seen as the ‘soul’ of poetry. Chapter 4 attempts to understand how the language of poetry can embody this soul. I start with Kavikarṇapūra’s eclectic philosophy of language, and then examine his poetics proper, as presented in the Alaṃkāra‐kaustubha: his views on suggestion (dhvani), literary excellences (guṇa), figures of speech (alaṃkāra), style (rīti), and literary defects (doṣa). I compare and contrast Kavikarṇapūra’s understanding of these with those of earlier authors, and demonstrate that Kavikarṇapūra particularly draws on Vāmana, a ninth‐century theorist, and gives prominence to the excellences and style—the core ideas of Vāmana’s poetics—to formulate a poetics that prizes phonetic ornamentation.

Abstract:
This chapter considers our confidence and self-belief with regards to the interview, and starts by discussing the concept of building a psychological scaffolding that underpins an interview performance. It goes on to consider being robust and resilient, and within that, the importance of understanding that we may fail and having the ability to reflect truthfully on what went wrong. The chapter then discusses interview clothing from a psychological perspective and provides an anecdote to reinforce the suggestion of wearing suitable attire. The chapter sees ourselves from the perspective of the examiner and ideas are suggested as to how we may question ourselves in order to strengthen our position as the best candidate. Finally, it thinks about optimization and belief in our own abilities.

The chapter starts by examining the debates about how customary international human rights law binding upon armed groups should be constituted, finding that it will be formed through State practice and opinio juris. It ends by examining different articulations of the theory that armed groups are bound by customary international law by accountability mechanisms, evaluating their credence and making suggestions for their improvement.

Abstract:
Cajal’s interest in hypnosis and suggestion extended into the realm of dreams. After one promising paper, he did not address the subject for the next decade. At sixty-six years of age Cajal started to record a personal dream diary. Although framed as an intellectual project aimed at disproving Freud’s theory, Cajal’s dream diary was deeply personal, as its writing spans a period during which he was acutely depressed, continuing intermittently until his death. In his diary, Cajal notes the interruption of many of his dreams due to intense attacks of emotional anguish. However, Cajal never inquires into the cause of these disturbances; in fact, any traumatic events suggested in his dreams are treated as lacking emotional significance. Cajal treats his dreams as though they were scientific propositions, beholden to the same rules of logic. He claims to see no evidence of repressed desire.

Abstract:
The concluding chapter starts out by assessing the explanatory power of the logic of affect. It suggests that the model was able to illuminate decisions that were difficult to comprehend from the standpoint of existing theoretical approaches. The logic of affect also improved on accounts where the traditional logics of consequences or appropriateness already enjoyed some success. This has resulted in more comprehensive explanations for why coercive diplomacy worked in the missile crisis but not in the Gulf conflict. After comparing the findings of the case studies, the chapter sketches their policy implications for the practice of coercive diplomacy. Finally, it provides some suggestions for future research that build on this effort to establish an affect-based paradigm in International Relations.

Abstract:
Studying change in the course of human history, in different places, through the lens of a diverse set of core themes, World History for International Studies offers readers a set of windows into different debates historians have been conducting. Key themes, such as communication, trade, order, slavery, religion, war, identity, modernity, norms and ecology, are linked to specific world regions, which tell a story about how local ideas and individual contacts developed, started to overlap and became globally understood and used by ever larger groups of people. These themes are brought to life by a diverse set of key primary sources, such as a book, a letter, a medal, a temple and an epic, to showcase how historians have used sources to tell these stories and conduct debates. The book provides an introductory resource into the study of history and includes detailed suggestions for further study.

Abstract:
This chapter starts from the premise that royal history is not yet properly a part of political history, but ought to be. It first examines who has written about monarchy and how they have done so, suggesting that this work has been distinctive and defective in several respects. It next evaluates how much of the research agenda outlined first by David Cannadine in 2004 has been addressed. The chapter then identifies the area—the study of monarchists and ‘monarchism’—which political (alongside social) historians might most urgently examine. It concludes by presenting preliminary research which indicates how the inclusion of monarchists and monarchism might alter thinking about both the monarchy and its subjects.

Concerns about dependent children are prominent, and distressing, for parents diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Helping parents feel prepared to talk with children about their illness and possible death, at any stage of illness, has the potential to alleviate distress in both parents and children. This chapter provides a summary of how children at different ages understand and respond to a death, and offers suggestions about how clinicians can support parents’ open communication with their children about illness and death, based on the child’s developmental stage, and phase of illness and treatment. Clinicians can start by making the effort to ask parents about their children, to learn a bit about child development, and to identify or create some resources for these families.

Next, it broadens its focus by reviewing trends and patterns of employment in the financial and business services sector as a whole. The following section offers a glimpse of offshore finance and its development since the crisis. In addition, it provides an overview and comparison of developments in fintech and their potential impact on the global map of financial centres. The deleterious effects of raised intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) on organ function and mortality have been known for decades, even centuries. Interest in this phenomenon has revived since the 1980s and, recently, the World Society for the Abdominal Compartment Syndrome has published new consensus definitions and guidelines. This chapter will focus on the new definitions for intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS), identify risk factors for the development of IAH/ACS, provide guidelines for IAP monitoring (including when to start, how to measure, and when to stop), and discuss both surgical and medical treatment options for both IAH and ACS. The effect of increased IAP on different organ systems is explained and suggestions on how to adjust ICU management of the patient with IAH are offered.

Abstract:
Scholar and Who fan Miles Booy has written the first historical account of the public interpretation of Doctor Who. Love and Monsters begins in 1979 with the publication of 'Doctor Who Weekly', the magazine that would start a chain of events that would see creative fans taking control of the merchandise and even of the programme's massively successful twenty-first century reboot. From the twilight of Tom Baker's years to the newest Doctor, Matt Smith, Miles Booy explores the shifting meaning of Doctor Who across the years – from the Third Doctor's suggestion that we should read the Bible, via costumed fans on television, up to the 2010 general election in Britain. This is also the story of how the ambitious producer John Nathan-Turner, assigned to the programme in 1979, produced a visually-excessive programme for a tele-literate fanbase, and how this style changed the ways in which Doctor Who could be read. The Doctor's world has never been bigger, inside or out!

Abstract:
Abstract Part of the Oxford Case Histories series, this book engages the reader in higher-level thinking through real-life case-based problems in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery. Containing 50 varied cases, the book covers the main subspecialties of ear, nose, and throat (ENT), as outlined by the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme (ISCP) for otolaryngology, including paediatric ENT, rhinology, anterior skull base surgery, otology/neurotology, head and neck surgery, facial plastics, and laryngology. In addition, several cases cover commonly encountered dilemmas by ENT surgeons in audiological medicine, and others examine more subspecialist knowledge such as jugular paraganglioma and hearing implantology. Each case starts with a short vignette, followed by questions on the differential diagnosis and aspects of management. Answers are accompanied by a detailed discussion and suggestions for further reading, enabling clinicians to gain the necessary skills for confident and competent diagnosis and management of medical problems. Cases are further supplemented with 15 videos of endoscopic and surgical procedures to demonstrate the answers in practice.

Abstract:
The chapter offers a critique of the concept of organizational identity (OI), challenging some basic assumptions and knowledge claims surrounding OI from a Critical Management Studies (CMS) perspective. We start by considering the taken-for-granted idea that OI is pre-given. We then consider the assumptions surrounding the inter-relationship between OI, employee identification, and organizational image, and suggest alternative ideas. We then challenge what we see as the reification in OI thinking, and point at the neglect of power in the field. We further discuss the remarkable similarities between aspects of OI research and studies of organizational culture, and argue that OI should take this work more seriously. Throughout, we advocate adopting a process perspective on OI in order to acknowledge the complexity of contemporary organizational life, and we conclude by offering suggestions regarding further developments in this area.

In the spring of 1996 a young girl from the Uzbek-majority city of Shibirghan was killed in mysterious circumstances. Strange phenomena soon started to occur next to Bibi Nushin’s burial place, suggesting that the deceased was of exceptional spiritual rank. Within a few weeks her burial place had been turned into a major pilgrimage site, attracting the sick, needy, deprived and persecuted from near and far. From 1996 to 2006, Shibirghan therefore witnessed a phenomenon that many local people interpreted as the emergence of a new Muslim saint for troubled times. However, at the same time, the spiritual rank of Bibi Nushin was heavily contested for political as well as religious reasons, not least through the influence of local warlords and strongmen. This chapter examines these developments in relation to regional varieties of Islam and women’s religiosity in the brutal contexts of a warlord society.

Full text
Abstract:
The postauricular reflex is a muscular reaction that occurs behind the ear in response to short, abrupt sounds. Its magnitude increases with louder eliciting sounds, rotating the eyes in the direction of the eliciting sound, and flexing the head forward. The reflex exhibits prepulse inhibition, especially during attention to complex foreground stimuli. Its magnitude is larger (or potentiated) during pleasant than during neutral pictures, sounds, and videos that are highly arousing. This pattern is particularly evident for erotic, food, and nurturant scenes, suggesting it assesses more than just appetitive processing. This reflex’s potentiation varies across development; positively correlates with personality traits associated with well-being; and negatively correlates with such psychopathologies as depression, schizophrenia, and opioid dependence. It appears distinct from and uncorrelated with the startle blink reflex. New data suggest that activity in left frontal areas generates postauricular reflex potentiation during pleasant versus neutral pictures.

Abstract:
This introduction to the section on the party system in Sweden starts with the premise that political parties are essential for the upholding of legitimacy in parliamentary democracies. Four chapters make up the section. The first focuses on the changing Swedish party system, where Social Democrats historically have held an exceptionally strong position, which has weakened during recent years. The second analyzes the parties’ internal organizational structure, suggesting that although Swedish parties have become more professionalized, and the ‘mass party’ has faded away, this does not imply they have become internally less democratic. The third chapter focuses on representation, arguing that Swedish parties today face a more complex environment than before, with more diversity among representatives. The concluding chapter suggests that some features of Swedish cabinets stand out in a comparative perspective, with many single-party minority governments, where the Social Democrats have ruled with the help of ‘support party coalitions’.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses some methodological aspects of the corpus work that constitutes the empirical foundation of this book. It starts by addressing the question why one would want to use corpus methods in the first place. Next, the Latin text corpus, which is reported on in the upcoming chapters, is presented on. To show that this corpus can indeed be considered a reliable source of information on how the Latin language evolved in the period from 200 BC to 600 AD, a case study is offered on the diachronic development of a particular type of periphrastic construction with esse ‘be’. Specifically, it is shown that the spread of future perfects of the type amatus fuero can be nicely fitted onto an S-curve, suggesting that the corpus reliably reflects the actual spoken language. The chapter concludes with some remarks on the distinction between synchronic and diachronic variation.

Bedock, Camille. Why Study Bundles of Reforms? Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198779582.003.0002.

Abstract:
This chapter starts by presenting the numerous conceptual and empirical arguments that have been put forward suggesting that political elites in Western European democracies have been trapped in areas of turbulence for the last two decades, with this taking the form of a general ‘erosion of political support’ (Dalton 2004). This perceived crisis of consolidated democracies has led to a broad debate on democratic institutions. The chapter then presents the dependent variable studied in this book, the bundle of reforms. The chapter commonly refers to ‘institutional systems’. The starting point, based on the existing literature and specifically on Lijphart’s work, is that democratic institutions evaluated together constitute a system. As a consequence, democratic reforms should also be studied taking into account the systemic nature of democratic institutions. The bundle of reforms constitutes a relevant unit of analysis with which to analyse reforms affecting multiple dimensions of the institutions simultaneously.

Fox, Merritt B. The Rise of Foreign Ownership and Corporate Governance. Edited by Jeffrey N. Gordon and Wolf-Georg Ringe. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198743682.013.34.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the link between corporate governance and the rise of foreign ownership. It presents statistics that illustrate the dramatic rise in foreign ownership over the last few decades and then seeks to explain this rise and its relationship to corporate governance. In order to situate the subject under study within its larger context, this explanation starts with an exploration of the factors independent of corporate-governance considerations that favor a global market for securities and those that impede it. It will be shown that the rise in foreign ownership globally can be explained in significant part by the weakening of the impeding factors. The chapter then shows why, as a matter of theory, improvements in corporate governance can be expected to cause a rise in foreign ownership and a rise in foreign ownership can be expected to cause improvements in corporate governance, with the weakening in the non-corporate-governance factors that impede a global market for securities acting as a catalyst for the causal pathwayings going in both directions. The chapter concludes with a review of substantial empirical evidence suggesting that both causal pathways are in fact at work.

Abstract:
This insightful book introduces the most important trends, people, events, and products of popular culture in Latin America and the Caribbean. In recent times, Latin American influences have permeated American culture through music, movies, television, and literature. This sweeping volume serves as a ready-reference guide to pop culture in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean, focusing on Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina, Haiti, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Costa Rica, among other areas. The work encourages hands-on engagement with the popular culture in these places, making such suggestions as Brazilian films to rent or where to find Venezuelan music on the Internet. To start, the book covers various perspectives and issues of these regions, including the influence of the United States, how the idea of machismo reflects on the portrayal of women in these societies, and the representation of Latino-Caribo cultures in film and other mediums. Entries cover key trends, people, events, and products from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. Each section gives detailed information and profound insights into some of the more academic—and often controversial—debates on the subject, while the inclusion of the Internet, social media, and video games make the book timely and relevant.

Abstract:
This one-stop guide to nurturing six core early literacy skills at your library also offers practical tips for sharing these skills with parents, teachers, and other caregivers so they can institute them in playgroups, in school, or at home. Though libraries have been presenting early literacy activities for decades, library staff may lack an in-depth understanding of early literacy skills and their place in preparing children for a lifetime of learning. Based on the program "6 by 6: Ready to Read," this book is chock full of practical, everyday ideas on how you can foster the six core early literacy skills children should ideally acquire by age six. The volume begins by introducing the importance of early literacy and explaining how to start or expand an early literacy program in your library, regardless of its size. Subsequent chapters explore the six core skills and offer suggestions on how to showcase them in library programs and services. The book also includes activities that relate to each skill, suggests books that are especially useful in exploring each skill, and tells you how to create early literacy spaces. Three sets of storytime plans—one each for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers—are presented as well. Written primarily for public librarians and library staff, this guide will also be informative for parents and for educators who work with young girls and boys.

Abstract:
This book analyzes data from a variety of sources to understand the mainstreaming of racism today, putting this research in a historical context. With issues of globalization, immigration, and demographic diversification achieving greater public salience, racism is now more likely to manifest itself in the form of a generalized ethnocentrism that expresses “outgroup hostility” toward a diverse set of groups, including Latinos and Muslims as well as African Americans. Changes in both structure and agency have facilitated the mainstreaming of racism today. Changes in the “political opportunity structure,” as witnessed by the rise of the Tea Party Movement, enabled the mainstreaming of white extremists into the Republican Party and established the basis for an electoral politics focused on giving voice to white people more generally acting on their outgroup hostility. Changes in the political opportunity structure were matched by the appearance of a charismatic leader in the person of Donald Trump, who made great use of a transformed media landscape to stoke white people’s outgroup hostility. Trump won the presidency by strategically deploying his demagoguery to mobilize white nonvoters in swing states, with the end result greatly accelerating the mainstreaming of racism and placing it at the center of policymaking in the White House. Providing extensive empirical evidence, this book documents how the mainstreaming of racism today began before Trump started to run for the presidency but then increased under his leadership and that it is likely to be a troubling presence in U.S. politics for some time to come. The findings provided create the basis for suggestions on how to push racism back to the margins of American politics.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This book includes a collection of chapters by scholars from across the world, who share an interest in those multiword terms that have “learning” as the first word. The types of such terms that are examined in the book include “learning toy”; “learning organization”; “learning economy”; and “learning city.” The book, as a whole, is multidisciplinary as well as multiparadigmatic. While there clearly are connections to the “lifelong learning” discourse, scholars in academic disciplines as various as economics, arts/aesthetics, philosophy, and human resource development—just to mention a few—are represented among the authors. The book’s ambition is to help make sense of the “learning turn”—in this case, the myriad multiword terms that have “learning” as a premodifier, some of which have come to be incredibly popular. It tries to make sense of both why the specific premodifier “learning” became so popular in the first place several decades ago, and how the depopularization of these terms, that some indications point to having started to take place, could be made sense of. The majority of the chapters criticize an unreflective use of learning as a premodifier, and are thus mainly critical toward the existence of the particular terms that the authors critically examine. A few chapters, though, aim to understand the usage of the learning premodifier, rather than to criticize it. The book offers proof of the usage as well as the popularity of the learning premodifier; outlines consequences stemming from the use of the learning premodifier; suggests plausible replacement premodifiers (such as “knowledge” or “smart”); and provides suggestions as to how unreflective usage of the learning premodifier could be avoided.

Abstract:
For all of us forced to deal with an infuriating, mean, critical person, seasoned counselor Nina Brown has a word of warning. You must accept that your usual coping strategies are not effective, and will not be effective, with this person, she advises. You cannot expect them to react and behave as adults. So what's a victim to do? Start with the suggestions in this book. In Coping with Infuriating, Mean, Critical People, Brown explains why many people, who may not display all of the characteristics necessary for a formal, full-blown narcissist diagnosis, still display what she calls a destructive narcissistic pattern that results in much the same anguish for those with whom the individual interacts. Thankfully, she also provides specific methods that will help victims of this behavior deal with the narcissistic colleague, supervisor or boss, parent, or intimate other. Only the extremely lucky among us have never faced or felt the effects of narcissistic behaviors and attitudes, displayed by colleagues, bosses, friends, parents, or lovers. These individuals may boast and brag constantly, take credit for other people's work, expect favors but return few or none, never listen (but always know all the answers), be sure of what is right and best regardless of the topic. They devalue others, micromanage, are hypercritical and mistrustful. Other characteristics of this harmful personality include an inflated sense of importance, although achievements are exaggerated and actual outcomes don't support feelings of superiority. They are exploitative, without empathy, and believe they are envied by all. Brown's excellent advice will help you cope.

Full text
Abstract:
What type of political association is the European Union? From the start of the European integration process, this question has puzzled scholars. Many different answers have been offered, but in the absence of an agreed response, most scholars implicitly avoid the issue by suggesting that the European Union is sui generis. This book challenges the sui generis thesis by demonstrating that the European Union is not a unique form of association, but rather a federal union of states, or what this book calls a federation. This is a discrete form of political association on a par with, though differentiated from, the other two forms of political modernity, namely the state and the empire. Therefore, the federation cannot be understood on the basis of the theory of the state, hereunder the concept of sovereignty. The ‘statist’ worldview still dominates both the debates on federalism and the European Union, meaning that all federal polities are seen either as ‘confederal’ associations of sovereign states or as sovereign federal states. The book challenges the statist schism of ‘federal’ versus ‘confederal’ by demonstrating that the federation is a discrete political form with a discrete constitutional theory, characterized by its own strengths and weaknesses. The federation is a political union of states founded on an interstate agreement of a constitutional nature, a federal compact, that does not absorb the Member States into a new state. It is characterized by a double political existence and the internal absence, contestation, or repression of sovereignty.

Murley, Jean. The Rise of True Crime. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216009276.

Full text
Abstract:
During the 1950s and 1960s True Detective magazine developed a new way of narrating and understanding murder. It was more sensitive to context, gave more psychologically sophisticated accounts, and was more willing to make conjectures about the unknown thoughts and motivations of killers than others had been before. This turned out to be the start of a revolution, and, after a century of escalating accounts, we have now become a nation of experts, with many ordinary people able to speak intelligently about blood-spatter patterns and organized vs. disorganized serial killers. The Rise of True Crime examines the various genres of true crime using the most popular and well-known examples. And despite its examination of some of the potentially negative effects of the genre, it is written for people who read and enjoy true crime, and wish to learn more about it. With skyrocketing crime rates and the appearance of a frightening trend toward social chaos in the 1970s, books, documentaries, and fiction films in the true crime genre tried to make sense of the Charles Manson crimes and the Gary Gilmore execution events. And in the 1980s and 1990s, true crime taught pop culture consumers about forensics, profiling, and highly technical aspects of criminology. We have thus now become a nation of experts, with many ordinary people able to speak intelligently about blood-spatter patterns and organized vs. disorganized serial killers. Through the suggestion that certain kinds of killers are monstrous or outside the realm of human morality, and through the perpetuation of the stranger-danger idea, the true crime aesthetic has both responded to and fostered our culture's fears. True crime is also the site of a dramatic confrontation with the concept of evil, and one of the few places in American public discourse where moral terms are used without any irony, and notions and definitions of evil are presented without ambiguity. When seen within its historical context, true crime emerges as a vibrant and meaningful strand of popular culture, one that is unfortunately devalued as lurid and meaningless pulp.

Abstract:
This book provides comprehensive analysis in the areas Islamic financial institutions and society. It starts off with the integration of the Islamic socio-economic and socio-political systems with the Islamic financial sector; with a view to help in removing some of the stereotype views that people have on the Islamic society and religion. In doing this, it provides the readers with an understanding of the Islamic society, characteristics of an Islamic society, and Islamic economics thoughts and theories. It goes further to make the readers to understand the sources, evolution, and guiding principles and practices of the Islamic finance and commercial jurisprudence. Although the book acknowledges the innovative no-interest financing framework; but in the absence of zero cost of lending, it develops an Islamic interest rate theoretical framework structure based on the profit-margin concept of the Islamic financial system. It goes on further to cover the structures, roles, functions, and monetary policies of the Islamic central banks in the absence of interest rate as well as proposes that organizational structures for the Islamic central banking system should include an Islamic finance division to oversee and monitor the Islamic financial institutions squarely. Flow charts are used to explain the structure, operations, models, products, instruments, and services of the Islamic commercial banks, financial institutions, insurance, and capital markets. This helps the readers to understand the dichotomies between the Islamic and conventional financial systems. It provides detailed systematic, logical steps, and processes involved in the Islamic financial transactions with the use of flow chart graphs which will help the readers in grasping the essentials of the Islamic financial sector; which will help the readers to understand the step-by-step processes and facilitate the conceptual clarities involved in the product deliveries and processes of the Islamic financial institutions. The book's concluding chapters were devoted to the performance, achievements, governance, challenges, and future expectations of the Islamic banking, finance, and capital markets. The book concludes with some suggestions on how to make the Islamic finance and its products more acceptable to the entire world; especially to the non-Muslim community of the world.

Abstract:
The chapters in this volume concentrate on the Dissenting traditions of the United Kingdom, the British Empire, and the United States. The Introduction weaves together their arguments, giving an overview of the historiography on Dissent while making the case for seeing Dissenters in different Anglophone connections as interconnected and conscious of their genealogical connections. The nineteenth century saw the creation of a vast Anglo-world which also brought Anglophone Dissent to its apogee. Yet any treatment of the subject must begin by recognizing the difficulties of spotting ‘Dissent’ outside the British Isles, where church–state relations were different from those that had originally produced Dissent. The chapter starts by emphasizing that if Dissent was a political and constitutional identity, then it was a relative and tactical one, which was often only strong where a strong Church of England existed to dissent against. It also suggests that in most parts of the world the later nineteenth century saw a growing enthusiasm for the moral and educational activism of the state, which plays against the idea of Dissent as a static, purely negative identity. The second section of the Introduction suggests identifying a fixation on the Bible as the watermark of Dissent. This did not mean there was agreement on what the Bible said or how to read it: the emphasis in Dissenting traditions on private judgement meant that conflict over Scripture was always endemic to them. The third section identifies a radical insistence on human spiritual equality as a persistent characteristic of Dissenters throughout the nineteenth century while also suggesting it was hard to maintain as they became aligned with social hierarchies and imperial authorities. Yet it also argues that transnational connections kept Dissenters from subsiding into acquiescence in the powers that were. The fourth section suggests that the defence and revival of a gospel faith also worked best when it was most transnational. The final section asks how far members of Dissenting traditions reconciled their allegiance to them with participation in high, national, and imperial cultures. It suggests that Dissenters could be seen as belonging to a robust subculture, one particularly marked by its domestication of the sacred and sacralization of the domestic. At the same time, however, both ‘Dissenting Gothic’ architecture and the embrace by Dissenters of denominational and national history writing illustrate that their identity was compatible with a confident grasp of national and imperial identities. That confidence was undercut in some quarters by the spread of pessimism among evangelicals and the turn to premillennial eschatology which injected a new urgency into the world mission. The itinerant holiness evangelists who turned away from the institutions built by mainstream denominations fostered Pentecostal movements, which in the twentieth century would decisively shift the balance of global Christianity from north to south. They indicate that the strength and global reach of Anglophone Dissenting traditions still lay in their dynamic heterogeneity.

Abstract:
Almost every country throughout the globe has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The virus's propagation has a disastrous effect on both human health and the economy as a whole. The COVID-19 global recession is the worst since World War II ended. According to the IMF's April 2021 World Economic Outlook Report, the global economy declined by 3.5 percent in 2020, 7 percent drop from the 3.4 percent growth predicted in October 2019. While almost every IMF-covered nation saw negative growth in 2020, the decline was more extreme in the world's poorest regions. The global supply system and international trade of all countries, including India, were affected by the nationwide lockdown in India and around the world to stop the pandemic from spreading. Since the beginning of 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on the global business climate. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in significant public health and economic problems in South Asian countries and the worst impacted being India, Bangladesh and Pakistan in recent years. The nationwide lockdown adopted by the countries was effective in slowing down the spread of the coronavirus in South Asia, but it came at a substantial financial and social cost to society. Manufacturing activities in Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines have shrunk sharply. Tourism, trade and remittances, and all major sources of foreign money for South Asian countries, have been substantially impacted. The COVID-19 spread has had a significant influence on global financial markets. The international financial and energy markets substantially dropped as the number of cases began to rise globally, primarily in the United States, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Iran, and South Korea along with South Asian countries. Reduced travel has had a substantial impact on service businesses such as tourism, hospitality, and transportation. According to IMF, (space required after,) 2020 South Asian economies are likely to shrink for the first time in 4 decades. The pandemic has pushed millions into poverty and widened income and wealth disparities because of premature deaths, workplace absenteeism and productivity losses. A negative supply shock has occurred with manufacturing and productive activity decreasing due to global supply chain disruptions and factory closures. This resulted in a severe short-term challenge for policymakers, especially when food and commodity prices rise, exacerbating economic insecurity. Failure to achieve equitable recovery might result in social and political unrest, as well as harsh responses from governments that have been less tolerant of dissident voices in recent years. Almost every area of the Indian economy is being ravaged by the pandemic. But the scope and degree of the damage vary from sector to sector within each area. One of the worst-affected areas in India is the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector. Apart from MSMEs, Agriculture and Agro-based industries, Banking companies and NBFCs and Social Sectors are also in jeopardy. The pandemic creates turmoil in the Capital Market and Mutual Funds industry. India's auto manufacturing and its ancillary sectors were badly hit during the initial stages of the pandemic when lockdown measures were adopted and the situation continued to remain subdued for many quarters. It is still uncertain whether this recession will have long-term structural ramifications for the global economy or will have only short-term financial and economic consequences. Additionally, the speed and the strength of the healing may be crucially dependent on the capability of the governments to accumulate and roll out the COVID-19 vaccines. In the context of the pandemic and its devastating impact on the Indian economy, an edited volume is proposed which intends to identify and analyse the footfalls of the pandemic on various sectors and industries in India. The proposed edited volume endeavours to understand the status, impact, problems, policies and prospects of the agricultural and agro-based industries, Banking and NBFCs, MSMEs, Social Sector, Capital Market and Mutual Funds during the pandemic and beyond. The proposed volume will contain research papers/articles covering the overall impact of the pandemic on various sectors, measures to be adopted to combat the situation and suggestions for overcoming the hurdles. For this, research papers and articles will be called from academicians, research scholars and industrialists having common research interests to share their insights relating to this area. It is anticipated that the volume will include twenty to twenty-five chapters. An editorial committee will be constituted with three chief editors and another external editor to review the articles following a double-blind review process to assure the quality of the papers according to the global standards and publisher's guidelines. The expected time to complete the entire review process is one month, and the publication process will start thereafter. The proposed volume is believed to be having significant socio-economic implications and is intended to cater to a large audience which includes academicians, researchers, students, corporates, policymakers, investors and general readers at large.

Abstract:
TOWARDS THE NEW LIFE Theology and Importance of Christian Initiation for the Life of Faith The book is in equal parts a presentation and an invitation. The subject matter of both is the mystagogical initiation leading to the personal encounter with God and eventually to the union within the Church in Christ, which happens initially and particualry in the sacramental liturgy. Mystagogy was the essential experience of life in the early Church and now is being so intensely discussed and postulated by the ecclesial Magisterium and through the teaching of the recent popes and synods. Within the ten chapters of this book the reader proceeds through the aspects strictly associated with Christian initiation, noticeable in catechumenate and suggestive for further Christian life. It is not surprising then, that the study begins with answering the question about the sense of dealing with catechumenate at all. The response developed in the first chapter covers four key points: the contemporary state of our faith, the need for dialogue in evangelization, the importance of liturgy in the renewal of faith and the obvious requirement of follo- wing the Church’s Magisterium, quite explicit in the subject undertaken within this book. The introductory chapter is meant to evoke interest in catechumenate as such and encourage comprehension of its essence, in order to keep it in mind while planning contemporary evangelization. For doing this with success and avoiding pastoral archeology, we need a competent insight into the main message and goal of Christian initiation. Catechumenate is the first and most venerable model of formation and growth in faith and therefore worth knowing. The second chapter tries to cope with the reasons and ways of the present return to the sources of catechumenate with respect to Christian initiation understood to be the building of the relationship with God. The example of catechumenate helps us to discover, how to learn wisely from the history. This would definitely mean to keep the structure and liturgy of catechumenate as a vehicle of God’s message, which must be interpreted and adapted always anew and with careful and intelligent consideration of the historical flavour on particular stages within the history of salvation and cultural conditions of the recipients. For that reason we refer to the Biblical resources and to the historical examples of catechumenate including its flourishing and declining periods, after which we are slowly approaching the present reinterpretation of the catechumenal process enhanced by the official teaching of the Church. As the result of the latter, particularly owing to the Vatican Council II, we are now dealing with the renewed liturgy of baptism displayed in two liturgical books: The Rite of Baptism for Children and the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). This version for adults is the subjectmatter of the whole chapter, in which a reader can find theological analyses of the particular rites as well as numerous indications for improving one’s life with Christ in the Church. You can find interesting associations among the rites of initiation themselves and astounding coherence between those rites and the sacraments of the Eucharist, penance and other sacraments, which simply means the ordinary life of faith. Deep and convincing theology of the process of initiation proves the inspiring spiritual power of the initial and constitutive sacraments of baptism and confirmation, which may seem attractive not only for catechumens but also for the faithful baptized in their infancy, and even more, since they might have not yet had a chance to see what a plausible treasure they have been conveying in their baptismal personality. How much challenge for further and constant realization in life may offer these introductory events of Christian initiation, yet not sufficiently appreciated by those who have already been baptized and confirmed! We all should submit to permanent re-evangelization according to this primary pattern, which always remains essential and fundamental. Very typical and very post-conciliar approach to Christian formation appears in the communal dimension, which guards and guarantees the ecclesial profile of initiation and prepares a person to be a living member of the Church. The sixth chapter of the book is dealing with ecclesial issues in liturgy. They refer to comprehending the word of God, especially in the context of liturgy, which brings about a peculiar theological sense to it and giving a special character to proclaiming the Gospel, which the Pope Francis calls “liturgical proclamation”. The ecclesial premises influence the responsibility for the fact of accompanying the candidates, who aim at becoming Christ’s disciples. As the Church is teaching also in the theological and pastoral introduction to the RCIA, this is the duty of all Christians, which means: priests, religious and the lay, because the Church is one organism in whose womb the new members are conceived and raised. As this fact is strongly claimed by the Church the method of initiation arises to great importance. The seventh chapter is dedicated to the analysis of the catechumenal method stemming from Christ’s pedagogy and His mystery of Incarnation introducing a very important issue of implementing the Divine into the human. The chapter concerning this method opens a more practical part of the book. The crucial message of it is to make mystagogy a natural and obvious method which is the way of building bonds with Christ in the community of the people who already have these bonds and who are eager to tighten them and are aware of the beauty and necessity of closeness with Christ. Christian initiation is the process of entering the Kingdom of God and meeting Christ up to the union with Him – not so much learning dogmas and moral requirements. This is a special time when candidates-catechumens-elected mature in love and in their attitude to Christ and people, which results in prayer and new way of life. As in the past catechumenate nowadays inspires the faithful in their imagination of love and mercy as well as reminds us about various important details of the paschal way of life, which constitute our baptismal vocation, but may be forgotten and now with the help of catechumenate can be recognized anew, while accompanying adults on their catechumenal way. The book is meant for those who are already involved in catechumenal process and are responsible for the rites and formation as well as for those who are interested in what the Church is offering to all who consciously decide to know and follow Christ. You can learn from this book, what is the nature and specificity of the method suggested by the Rite itself for guiding people to God the Saviour and to the community of His people. The aim of the study is to present the universal way of evangelization, which was suggested and revealed by God in His pedagogy, particularly through Jesus Christ and smoothly adopted by the early Church. This way, which can be called a method, is so complete, substantial and clear that it deserves rediscovery, description and promotion, which has already started in the Church’s teaching by making direct references to such categories as: initiation, catechumenate, liturgical formation, the rereading the Mystery of Christ, the living participation in the Mystery and faith nourished by the Mystery. The most engaging point with Christian initiation is the fact, that this seems to be the most effective way of reviving the parish, taking place on the solid and safe ground of liturgy with the most convincing and objective fact that is our baptism and our new identity born in baptismal regenerating bath. On the grounds of our personal relationship with God and our Christian vocation we can become active apostles of Christ. Evangelization begins with ourselves and in our hearts. Thinking about the Church’s mission, we should have in mind our personal mission within the Church and we should refer to it’s roots – first to our immersion into Christ’s death and resurrection and to the anointment with the Holy Spirit. In this Spirit we have all been sent to follow Christ wherever He goes, not necessarily where we would like to direct our steps, but He would. Let us cling to Him and follow Him! Together with the constantly transforming and growing Church! Towards the new life!
