The article explores the ways in which the day of annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina was commemorated in the press of the Habsburg Monarchy. The choice of German-language newspapers from various parts of Austro-Hungary was determined by the fact that the German language can be considered one of the key unifying factors within the empire. German-language newspapers and other periodicals were published all over Cisleithania, in the Hungarian part, for instance in Zagreb and Budapest, and in Bosnia itself. The analysis of publications from 1908–1918 shows that while commemoration of the event w

Annexins are a structurally related family of Ca2+ binding proteins of undertermined biological function. Annexin I (also called lipocortin 1) is a substrate for the EGF-stimulated tyrosine kinase and is postulated to be involved in mitogenic signal transduction. To investigate further the involvement of lipocortin 1 in cell proliferation, we measured lipocortin 1 levels in normal diploid human foreskin fibroblasts (HFF) to determine whether its expression changed as a function of growth status. For comparison, the expression of annexin V (also called endonexin II) was measured in HFF cells. E

AbstractA full length cDNA clone was isolated by screening a mixed stage Globodera pallida expression library using the monospecific polyclonal antibody IACR-PC320. Sequence comparison indicated that the predicted 332 amino acid protein encoded by the cDNA was a member of the annexin gene family named gp-nex and very similar to annexins found in other nematode species. Annexins are calcium-dependent phospholipid binding proteins characterised by four repeated domains approximately 70 amino acids in length. The predicted amino acid sequence of the protein did not contain an N-terminal secretion

The transcription of three annexin genes in the nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans, was detected by reverse transcriptase/polymerase chain reaction amplification of messenger RNAs. The highest level of expression was from the nex-1 gene, with lower levels detected for the nex-2 and nex-3 genes. The expression of nex-1 was reduced in the Dauer larval stage relative to the other annexins, correlating with the absence of the spermathecal valves, a major site of nex-1 protein localization. Recombinant nex-1 protein was expressed in yeast, isolated by calcium-dependent binding to acidic phospholipids

While the annexation movement in British Columbia appears to have been short-lived and disorganized, it was nevertheless understood as a serious threat to British rule. This study seeks to reconcile this contradiction through an examination of newspapers, debates, despatches, and correspondence drawn from British Columbia, Britain, Canada, and the United States. In examining the movement, this study reveals both the peculiar capacity of the minor agitation to present an exaggerated image of its popularity, and the key geopolitical assumptions which led observers to overestimate its importance.

Hybrid warfare has become increasingly prominent since the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula. The phenomenon may become more and more of a concern for security and defense. This chapter provides some explanation of what the phenomenon itself is, a mode of warfare which embraces conventional capabilities, as well as irregular forces, irregular tactics, and formations, but also includes information warfare and involves both state and nonstate actors. It also outlines some of the steps which NATO and NATO member states have taken since the annexation of Crimea and considers some of the potential future hybrid threats and how they could be defended against. It is noted that in order to counter many threats of hybrid warfare a societal level response is required.

This chapter discusses Marcus Simaika's role in making the Coptic Museum a state institution of Egypt. In 1920, Fuad I, ruler of Egypt and Sudan from the Muhammad Ali dynasty, visited the Coptic Museum. From that moment, the king conceived the idea of making the Coptic Museum a state museum and asked Simaika to cede the museum to the government. Simaika replied that he would submit the request to Cyril V. All objects in the museum belonged to the Coptic Orthodox Church, and Simaika would not have been able to transfer them from the different monasteries and churches without ecclesiastic approval and on the condition that they be exhibited in an annex to the Muʻallaqa Church and under the care of the priest of that church. The chapter describes the annexation of the Coptic Museum by the state and its nationalization, as well as its acquisitions and collections.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 is the last of three chapters analysing Russia’s post-Soviet state practice with regard to the right to self-determination. It shows how Russia (ab)used the right of peoples to self-determination as a pretext to justify territorial acquisitions by the threat and use of force, in particular in the context of Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, but also in its retrospect evaluation of the Soviet Union’s annexation of the Baltic states in 1940. Apart from a ‘referendum’, Russia’s main legal argument for the legality of Crimea’s incorporation into the Russian Federation was based on the reading that the Ukrainian Revolution had created an ‘extreme situation’ in which Crimea’s right to self-determination could not be exercised any longer in the constitutional framework of Ukraine. As in the cases of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, the claim of a right of secession had however no sufficient factual basis, although the underlying legal view—that the right of peoples to self-determination may confer a right of secession in ‘extreme situations’—was consistent with earlier state practice. ‘Crimea’ arguably marked a shift away from legal argumentation towards recourse to eclectic historical claims and restoration of hegemonic power, in which the right of peoples to self-determination continues to function as a central legal argument, but legal reasoning more generally loses its dominant position in the official justification of Russia’s state practice in the post-Soviet space.

Abstract:
In the last few years, especially in his April 2019, September 2019 and March 2020 electoral campaigns, Netanyahu said Israel would soon annex much of the West Bank, especially the Jordan River valley. However, there is strong Israeli opposition to annexation, especially from the security establishment, which fears it would precipitate a major Palestinian uprising. Moreover, many Israeli political analysts are doubtful that Netanyahu will proceed to outright annexation and instead settle for de facto “creeping” annexation over large portions of the West Bank, especially all the Jewish settlements. The Trump administration would almost certainly support that, as its “Trump Plan” continues its unconditional support for all of Netanyahu’s policies and goals. In Gaza, in practice Hamas has given up its goal of taking over all of historic Palestine, including Israel, and will settle for Israeli acquiescence in its continued rule over Gaza. There are increasing indications that Israel might do so, providing that Hamas ends all attacks on Israel from Gaza. Moreover, Israel has long wanted to separate Gaza from the West Bank, thus preventing the creation of a unified Palestinian state.
