Abstract:
Optimal trajectories are analysed, covering both constant- and variable-specific-impulse cases. Primer vector is defined and illustrated. The first-order necessary conditions for an optimal constant-specific-impulse (CSI) trajectory were first derived by Lawden using classical Calculus of Variations. Variable-specific-impulse rocket engines are discussed with the cost functional for a VSI engine. In the derivation that follows, an Optimal Control Theory formulation is used, but the derivation is similar to that of Lawden. One difference is that the mass is not defined as a state variable, but is kept track of indirectly.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the literature on cognitive processes in substance use disorders from a dual-process perspective. In dual-process models, behavior is viewed as the joint outcome of “impulsive” and “reflective” processes. Reflective processes rely on a single limited capacity mechanism and can be depleted, resulting in a stronger influence of impulsive processes. Recent studies confirmed this, both for state variables (e.g., reduced moderation of impulses after acute alcohol) and for trait variables (stronger prediction of addictive and related behaviors by impulsive processes in individuals with relatively weak executive control processes). In addiction, the balance between impulsive and reflective processes can become (further) disturbed as a result of the effects of the psychoactive substances on the cognitive processes involved. This is related to the notion of reduced “willpower,” traditionally at the heart of definitions of addiction. A model on the cognitive processes involved in addiction is presented, along with implications for interventions.

Abstract:
Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are common disabling disorders that have impulsive behavior as a core feature. They emerge early in life and run a chronic lifelong course. They are assumed to lie at the severest end of a continuum of impulsivity that connects normal with pathological states. People with ICDs experience a drive to undertake repetitive acts. Although the consequences are damaging, performance of the impulsive act may be experienced as rewarding, or alternatively may relieve distress, implicating dysfunction of the neural circuitry involved in reward processing and/or behavioral inhibition. Clinical data are increasingly pointing toward an etiological association between some ICDs, such as pathological gambling and addiction, and others, such as trichotillomania and compulsive disorders. Comorbidity with other psychiatric disorders is also common, and hints at overlapping psychobiological processes across several diagnostic groups. The results of neurocognitive studies suggest that impulsivity is multidimensional and comprises dissociable cognitive and behavioral indices governed by separate underlying neural mechanisms. For example, trichotillomania may primarily involve motor impulsivity, whereas problem gambling may involve reward impulsivity and reflection impulsivity. Exploring neurocognitive changes in individuals with ICDs and other mental disorders characterized by poor impulse control, and among their family members, may help to elucidate the underpinning neurocircuitry and clarify their nosological status.

Abstract:
Who are the real campers? Through-hiking backpackers traversing the Appalachian Trail? The family in an SUV making a tour of national parks and sleeping in tents at campgrounds? People committed to the RV lifestyle who move their homes from state to state as season and whim dictate? This book would claim: all of the above. Camping is one of the United States' most popular pastimes. Campers have been enjoying themselves for well over a century, during which time camping's appeal has shifted and evolved. This book takes readers into nature and explores with them the history of camping in the United States. The book shows how camping progressed from an impulse among city-dwellers to seek temporary retreat from their exhausting everyday surroundings to a form of recreation so popular that an industry grew up around it to provide an endless supply of ever-lighter and more convenient gear. It humanizes camping's history by spotlighting key figures in its development and a sampling of the campers and the variety of their excursions.

Abstract:
While Russia officially supports the humanistic principles underlying the responsibility to protect, it has criticized the expanded interpretation and implementation of R2P by Western states. This chapter looks at Russia’s own practical experience with activities in the ‘spirit’, if not strictly the ‘letter’, of R2P and explores the genuine appealof the human protection imperative for Russia as a society rather than just a state. It argues that Russia’s involvement in the crisis in eastern Ukraine is the case when Russia has come closest to exercising its own version of R2P which was driven at least as much by a massive genuine human solidarity impulse on the part of the bulk of the Russian society as by the Kremlin’s strategic interests. The chapter identifies a growing gap between Russia’s practical experience on human protection highlighted by the Donbass case and its conservative and narrow conceptual and policy approach to R2P.

Abstract:
‘Text, image, space, and spirit’ considers the culture, literature, art, architecture, philosophy, and religion of the Byzantium Empire. Byzantine imperial ideology was predicated upon the concept of the absolute historical continuity of the Roman state. This profoundly conservative ideological impulse informed a broader tendency towards conservatism in Byzantine literary culture, which was a legacy from antiquity. The strongly conservative inflection to Byzantine culture was further intensified by the influence of the Church and also strongly impacted on art. However, there was much greater creativity than has often been supposed. The relationship between innovation and necessity is at its clearest with respect to Byzantine architectural and artistic development.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 explores the personal relationship visitors thought they had with Memnon. In response to Memnon’s morning cry, visitors used inscriptions to communicate with the articulate yet inanimate statue. Following two main impulses of animation, inscribers either addressed the god as a listener through the rhetorical figure of apostrophe or imagined him as a speaker, calling out to his mother or to them, through prosopopeia. The latter impulse overlaps with the concept of epiphany, where the god makes himself manifest by some sign—usually visual, but in this case aural. This chapter discusses apostrophe, prosopopeia, and epiphany as evidence for visitors’ yearning to commemorate their interactions with Memnon. Inserting themselves into the collective practice of sacred tourism, they nevertheless seek to make the verbal exchange meaningful on a personal level. The inscriptions bear witness to this tension between the communality and the uniqueness of each instance of communication with Memnon.
