Modern mechanical engineering designs (and some others) make more and more demands on the development of mathematical models of units in which friction is present. A condition that significantly complicates the study of the properties of a frictional contact is its discreteness with different geometric parameters of two contacting bodies, as a result of which the contact is formed only between a part of the roughness of the rubbing bodies (base and slide). AbstractOne of the principal methods of preventing large earthquakes is stimulation of a large series of small events. The result is a transfer of the rapid tectonic dynamics in a creep mode. In this chapter, we discuss possibilities for such a transfer in the framework of simplified models of a subduction zone. The proposed model describes well the basic characteristic features of geo-medium behavior, in particular, statistics of earthquakes (Gutenberg Richter and Omori laws). Abstract:
Employing numerical prediction models can be a powerful tool for forecasting air quality and visibility hazards related to dust events. However, these numerical models are sensitive to surface conditions. Roughness features (e.g., rocks, vegetation, furrows, etc.) that shelter or attenuate wind flow over the soil surface affect the magnitude and spatial distribution of dust emission. To aide in simulating the emission phase of dust transport, we used a previously published albedo-based drag partition parameterization to better represent the component of wind friction speed affecting the immedi

Abstract:
This present work aims to investigate the solids motion and fluid flow in a two phase fluidized bed via a discrete particle modeling and simulation. The motion of individual particle is based on the fluid force acting on the particle and the contact force between particles. The contact force is models by using the same analogy of spring, dash-pot and friction slider. In addition, the mixing and segregation in beds containing two types of particles with different densities and different size are also studies. Moreover, the effects of superficial gas velocity and bad geometry on the solids movem

Abstract:
Bridges often serve as key links in local and national transportation networks. Bridge closures can result in severe costs, not only in the form of repair or replacement, but also in the form of economic losses related to medium- and long-term interruption of businesses and disruption to surrounding communities. In addition, continuous functionality of bridges is very important after any seismic event for emergency response and recovery purposes. Considering the importance of these structures, the associated structural design philosophy is shifting from collapse prevention to maintaining funct

Abstract:
- The UK is less exposed to the direct effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine than its European neighbours. However, the indirect and longer-term effects of the war on UK trade could still be significant. - Inflationary pressure worldwide will contribute to price rises in the UK, particularly for food and energy. The ongoing effects of both Brexit – which has caused cross-border supply frictions and worker shortages – and the COVID-19 pandemic – which led to pent-up domestic demand and further reduced the labour force – will only increase this upward pressure. - The war has prompted increased

EFFECT OF RANDOM PRE-STRESSED FRICTION LOSS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF A SUSPEN-DOME STRUCTURE. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2022.18.1.5.

Full text
Abstract:
The key to the high-efficiency performance of the suspen-dome structure is to apply the pre-stressed design value to the structure accurately. However, engineering practice has found that the use of tensioning hoop cables to apply the pre-stress will produce noticeable pre-stressed friction loss (PFL), which significantly affects the safety performance of the structure. In this paper, based on a 1:10 scaled-down experiment model of a suspen-dome structure with rolling cable-strut joint installed, the random PFL (RPFL) effect of the suspen-dome on structure performance was analyzed through a pr

ROTATIONAL RESISTANCE TEST OF A NEW ALUMINUM ALLOY PENETRATING (AAP) JOINT SYSTEM. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2023.19.2.4.

Full text
Abstract:
Aluminum alloy penetrating (AAP) joint is an improved form of the Aluminum Alloy Temcor (AAT) joint system consisting of one penetrating member, four short members, gussets, bolts and a U-shaped connector. The rotational resistance performance of AAP joints is investigated by a static out-of-plane flexural test. The specific experimental parameters include the gusset thickness (6 mm and 12 mm) and shape (circular and X-shaped). The differences between penetrating and short members in AAP joints are analyzed, and the influence of thicknesses and shapes of gusset on rotational resistance behavio
