Full textThe use of inclined cables to support the deck of a bridge is a principle known since the XIX century, but the modern conception of bridges having stays as the only supporting system is relatively recent, introduced starting from the second half of the XX century. Since the first realizations, the most important aspect has concerned the control of the geometry during the construction by adjusting the tension of the stays. The management of the construction phases and subsequently of the final proof testing of the completed structure are part of a wider process that converges in the structural monitoring for the control of its static and dynamic behavior at service conditions. In the case of cable-stayed bridges, given their importance and complexity, it is fundamental to elaborate this process with a unitary vision in order to obtain, at the end of the construction, a calibrated numerical model that can reproduce the real behavior of the structure and therefore interpret its evolution over time. In this thesis, the process of control of the conditions of a real cable-stayed bridge, the Filomena Delli Castelli Bridge over the Saline River in the province of Pescara, has been analyzed in order to provide a correct procedure for the realization of the static and dynamic monitoring of cable-stayed bridges. Actually, all the phases of construction and the proof testing of the structure have been followed, which have provided on one hand the acquisition of static and dynamic measurements through an extensive campaign of in-site investigations, and on the other hand, the development of Finite Elements models and numerical analysis for the interpretation of the experimental results. Thus, two validated and calibrated Finite Elements models have been obtained for the design of a continuous structural health monitoring system, one for static monitoring, i.e. for the control of the tension in the stays, derived from the analysis of the construction phases, and the other for the dynamic monitoring, derived from the analysis of the proof tests. Once the system has been installed on the bridge, after an initial stabilization period, it will be possible to analyze the obtained results to understand the limits and, especially, the potential of this technology.

Full textThe study of the static and dynamic behaviour of the architectural heritage of historical-artistic value made up of rigid stone blocks is a topic of particular interest in the field of modern Seismic Engineering. Such knowledge, in fact, is indispensable for the planning of correct maintenance for the conservation of this type of cultural heritage, especially in conditions of natural and human-induced risks. Among these types of artifacts, the Neptune Temple (also called Poseidònion) located inside the Archaeological Park of Paestum (southern Italy) and a case study of this research, is an emblem for the architectural, sculptural, constructional and structural aspects. It is also unique in the international panorama for its state of conservation, still complete of the whole trabeation and the two pediments. The work describes the study and the research in progress in this area, illustrating the main results obtained by in-depth theoretical studies of the static and dynamic behaviour of rigid block, from experimental investigations carried out both in the laboratory and on site. These last were conducted under the patronage of ICOMOS Italia and the Archaeological Park of Paestum. These studies and research have the objective of evaluating the static and dynamic behaviour of the main building blocks of the Temple and, also, evaluating their safety about seismic actions... Full textThe last decades have been involved in a rapid development of computer science and electronics with major worldwide scientific and technical consequences. In structural mechanics the variational energetic principles have become the theoretical basis of many numerical analysis procedures. The thesis is a study on the Principle of Virtual Work and its practical use to deduce structural and theoretical models in various fields. Particular emphasis is also placed on the numerical approach to these models, since the widespread use of personal computers in any engineering application has become very common. The main aim reached is definitely to have shown that even at first sight very complex structural theories, and related numerical analysis methods, are actually based on a simple principle whose utterance occupies a few lines, remaining in the specific only to define the environment in which this principle operates and the implementation on a computer of a good solver algorithm. As original examples of practical application of the PVW has been proposed: - An analysis method for pin-jointed structures, practically used to study a prestressed pin-jointed steel structure. - A second order kinematics for curved beams, of which has also been given a physical and geometrical explanation. - A threedimensional Cosserat-like model to define the behavior of ferroelectrics materials, together with its physical interpretation at atomic level. - A generic method to transform a monodimensional continuous model in a discrete one, through the definition of suitable finite elements, usable for each non linear second order kinematics. - A PVW generalization for dinamics, which involves the notion of duality even when comes into play the time dimension.
