Full textThe use of inclined cables to support the deck of a bridge is a principle known since the XIX century, but the modern conception of bridges having stays as the only supporting system is relatively recent, introduced starting from the second half of the XX century. Since the first realizations, the most important aspect has concerned the control of the geometry during the construction by adjusting the tension of the stays. The management of the construction phases and subsequently of the final proof testing of the completed structure are part of a wider process that converges in the structural monitoring for the control of its static and dynamic behavior at service conditions. In the case of cable-stayed bridges, given their importance and complexity, it is fundamental to elaborate this process with a unitary vision in order to obtain, at the end of the construction, a calibrated numerical model that can reproduce the real behavior of the structure and therefore interpret its evolution over time. In this thesis, the process of control of the conditions of a real cable-stayed bridge, the Filomena Delli Castelli Bridge over the Saline River in the province of Pescara, has been analyzed in order to provide a correct procedure for the realization of the static and dynamic monitoring of cable-stayed bridges. Actually, all the phases of construction and the proof testing of the structure have been followed, which have provided on one hand the acquisition of static and dynamic measurements through an extensive campaign of in-site investigations, and on the other hand, the development of Finite Elements models and numerical analysis for the interpretation of the experimental results. Thus, two validated and calibrated Finite Elements models have been obtained for the design of a continuous structural health monitoring system, one for static monitoring, i.e. for the control of the tension in the stays, derived from the analysis of the construction phases, and the other for the dynamic monitoring, derived from the analysis of the proof tests. Once the system has been installed on the bridge, after an initial stabilization period, it will be possible to analyze the obtained results to understand the limits and, especially, the potential of this technology.

Full textThe study of the static and dynamic behaviour of the architectural heritage of historical-artistic value made up of rigid stone blocks is a topic of particular interest in the field of modern Seismic Engineering. Such knowledge, in fact, is indispensable for the planning of correct maintenance for the conservation of this type of cultural heritage, especially in conditions of natural and human-induced risks. Among these types of artifacts, the Neptune Temple (also called Poseidònion) located inside the Archaeological Park of Paestum (southern Italy) and a case study of this research, is an emblem for the architectural, sculptural, constructional and structural aspects. It is also unique in the international panorama for its state of conservation, still complete of the whole trabeation and the two pediments. The work describes the study and the research in progress in this area, illustrating the main results obtained by in-depth theoretical studies of the static and dynamic behaviour of rigid block, from experimental investigations carried out both in the laboratory and on site. These last were conducted under the patronage of ICOMOS Italia and the Archaeological Park of Paestum. These studies and research have the objective of evaluating the static and dynamic behaviour of the main building blocks of the Temple and, also, evaluating their safety about seismic actions... Full textThe last decades have been involved in a rapid development of computer science and electronics with major worldwide scientific and technical consequences. In structural mechanics the variational energetic principles have become the theoretical basis of many numerical analysis procedures. The thesis is a study on the Principle of Virtual Work and its practical use to deduce structural and theoretical models in various fields. Particular emphasis is also placed on the numerical approach to these models, since the widespread use of personal computers in any engineering application has become very common. The main aim reached is definitely to have shown that even at first sight very complex structural theories, and related numerical analysis methods, are actually based on a simple principle whose utterance occupies a few lines, remaining in the specific only to define the environment in which this principle operates and the implementation on a computer of a good solver algorithm. As original examples of practical application of the PVW has been proposed: - An analysis method for pin-jointed structures, practically used to study a prestressed pin-jointed steel structure. - A second order kinematics for curved beams, of which has also been given a physical and geometrical explanation. - A threedimensional Cosserat-like model to define the behavior of ferroelectrics materials, together with its physical interpretation at atomic level. - A generic method to transform a monodimensional continuous model in a discrete one, through the definition of suitable finite elements, usable for each non linear second order kinematics. - A PVW generalization for dinamics, which involves the notion of duality even when comes into play the time dimension.

Full textPurpose of our study has been that to appraise the feasibility, the effectiveness and the benefits of the positioning of a new regulating static-dynamic interspinos device (ID), denominated "FALENA", in Patient with degenerative stenosis of the lumbar vertebral channel of moderate or severe degree and with superior age to 50, valued with clinical and instrumental examinations pre and post procedure. Materials and Methods: In the inclusive period between October 2008 and November 2009 26 Patients have been enlisted (17M, 9F; age middle 69 years). The criterions of inclusion have been: Patient with equal or superior age to 50 that introduced degenerative stenosis of the vertebral channel with neurogenic claudication. All the Patients had preliminarily been treated, without having gotten benefits, with pharmacological therapy, physiotherapy and epidural injections for at least 6 months. The diagnosis of stenosis of the vertebral channel and the perforate me of conjugation you/he/she has been in all confirmed through radiographic examination, examination RM or, in presence of side effects, with examination TC. Results: 26 patients have been submitted to the positioning of an individual Type "FALENA." Of these, 20 (80%) have been positioned to level of the interspinous space L4-L5; and 6 (20%) to level of the space L3-L4. The caliber of the ID used you/he/she has been of 10 mm in 20 cases (16 to level of the space interspinous L4-L5 and 4 to level of the space L3-L4). ID of 12 mm have been used in the remainders 6 cases (4 L4-L5 and 2 L3-L4). All the patients have compiled the questionnaires ODI and VAS before the intervention and to the controls effected to 1 and 3 months. 12 patients are also submitted to a follow up to 6 months. The duration of the refuge has been of 3 days all the patients except one that introduced pain to the surgical wound and therefore you/he/she has been held back for 4 nights. In 22 patients (85%) a RM has been performed before and to 3 months from the intervention to appraise the height of the intersomatic space, the area and the diameters of the vertebral channel to level essay. In the remainders 4 patient (15%) an examination TC has been performed before and to 3 months from the intervention because of the presence of side effects to the RM. In any patient you/he/she has been documented the migration of the Of during the follow-up. In all the patients you/he/she has been you a reduction of the symptomatic clinical. Conclusions: The study underlines as the use of this type of interspinous device is effective, even if within a narrow casuistry, in to meaningfully reduce the symptomatic produced by degenerative stenosis of the vertebral channel. Such Of you/he/she has shown a good facility of positioning with limited surgical incision and, using machineries to high technology and in experienced hands, low incidence of complications with rapid recovery of the patients with least times of hospitalization.

Full textUltra-high performance concrete (UHPC)-filled steel tube (UCFST) column is a kind of new-type composite structure which is made by filling UHPC into steel tube. It can fully exert the tensile properties of steel tube and avoid the high brittleness of UHPC. Thus, it can improve the force-bearing performance of the composite structure. Nowadays, research on UCFST structure mainly focuses on its static behavior, and the research on hysteretic behavior of this new composite structure is quite rare. Therefore, in this paper, the cyclic behavior of UCFST columns were studied by combining the experimental study and finite element analysis. The main work carried out and the main conclusions obtained are as follows: (1) Referring to the existing static tests of UCFST columns and quasi-static tests of normal concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns, the quasi-static tests of eight UCFST columns were carried out. The effects of axial compression ratio and steel ratio on the hysteretic behavior of the columns were investigated experimentally. The experimental results showed that integral bending failure were occurred in all the specimens. And with the increase of axial compression ratio, the bending capacity of the specimen increased firstly and then decreased, while the ductility and energy dissipation capacity decreased a lot. Furthermore, the bending capacity, ductility and energy dissipation capacity all increased in different magnitude as the steel ratio increased. (2) According to the research results of UCFST columns static tests, the constitutive model of confined concrete was selected appropriately firstly in this paper and the finite element program OpenSEES was adopted to establish UCFST column models under cyclic load. Furthermore, the influence of axial compression ratio, steel ratio, steel yielding strength and concrete strength on the plastic bending behavior of UCFST columns was analyzed expandingly by the verified finite element model. And the results of finite element analysis showed that steel ratio, core concrete strength and axial compression ratio were the main parameters that affect the elasticity stiffness of UCFST columns. The yield moment and yield curvature of UCFST columns were mainly affected by steel ratio, steel yielding strength and core concrete strength. And the parameters such as axial compression ratio, steel ratio, steel strength and so on would affect the curvature ductility coefficient of UCFST columns. (3) According to the results of quasi-static tests and finite element analysis, the bending moment-curvature skeleton curve of UCFST columns can be the well simulated by using the tri-line model. Referring to CFST column theory, the simplified calculation formulas of each characteristic point in the moment-curvature skeleton curve of UCFST columns were obtained by data fitting method. And the characteristic points included the elasticity stiffness, the yield moment, the yield curvature and the strengthening phase stiffness. Finally, the data of quasi-static tests and finite element analysis were used to verify the tri-line model on the bending moment-curvature curve of UCFST columns proposed in this paper, which can provide reference for the research on the seismic behavior of UCFST columns in the future.

Full textA common set of concurrent mixed methods was used for each stage of this study. A quantitative national survey of Statics instructors (n =166) and 18 qualitative interviews were conducted to examine activities used in the Statics classroom and familiarity with nine RBIS.
The results of this study show that lecturing is the most common activity throughout Statics classrooms, but is not the only activity. Other common activities included working examples and students working on problems individually and in groups. As discussed by the interview participants, each of Rogers\' characteristics influenced adoption for different reasons. For example, Complexity (level of difficulty with implementation of an RBIS) was most commonly identified as a barrier. His study also evaluated the Fidelity of Implementation for each RBIS and found it to be higher for RBIS that were less complex (in terms of the number of critical components). Many of the critical components (i.e. activities required for implementation, as described in the literature) were found to statistically distinguish RBIS users and non-users.
This dissertation offers four contributions: (1) an understanding of current ractices in Statics; (2) the instructor perspective of the barriers to using RBIS in the classroom; (3) the use of Fidelity of Implementation as a unique evaluation of RBIS adoption, which can be used by future engineering education researchers; and (4) a systematic approach of exploring change in the classroom, which offers new perspectives and approaches to accelerate the adoption process.

Full textThe Mauritanian exclusive economic zone is the seat of an upwelling phenomenon and constitutes a transition zone where species of temperate and tropical affinities coexist. To understand the spatio-temporal behavior of demersal assemblages from the point of view of their composition, structure, distribution of probability and diversity faced to ecological concerns. Abiotic factors contribute in the structuring of persistent groundfish assemblages over time. The fishing effects were relatively low, although significant in some years and in some specific geographic areas. Temporal trajectories between groundfish assemblages and environmental conditions have been highlighted for some years and in some specific areas. In each type habitats, two species groups were identified: a minority group of species very aggregative well fitted by Fisher’s log-series distribution and another majority of species little or not aggregative well fitted by the truncated negative binomial distribution. Diversity indices analyzed reveal that this set can be split into two distinct and complementary groups: a group associated with the species richness and another group associated with evenness. One component of diversity may not represent the diversity of the groundfish in the study area. GLMs of complementary indices showed essentially a temporal effect and Bathymetric strata-Year interaction. No effect of fishing effort was observed on the species richness and neither was the concentration of chlorophyll a on the evenness. This work could provide managers and scientists to further knowledge on the spatio-temporal dynamics of groundfish species assemblages exploited in upwelling ecosystems

Full textThe analysis of static and perturbed balance of postural strategy used by athletes when carrying out technical acts, represents a useful instrument for the evaluation of motor functionality and the level of improvement reached by the athlete. The detection of any impairment in the control of orthostatic posture or in executing a motor task, allow precocious intervention to re-establish the correct functionality so as to reduce the risk factor for injury and to increase the rate of technical improvement. To arrive at this, the main purpose of the current investigation was to investigate if the general and specific test for the assessment of static and dynamic balance were capable of estimating balance as a discriminating factor in different sport activities and also; within the same activity itself, between different levels of specialization (low, medium, high level). For this purpose the study was divided in two phases, the fist phase was characterized by an activity of analysis directed to investigate the reliability of the balance test both in static and dynamic conditions. The second phase analysed the validation of the balance test by studying the variation of balance parameter within the various sport disciplines analysed (Basket, Volleyball, Aerobics, Kayak, Gymnastic and Dance). In addition, this second phase offers an expression of “ hierarchical assessment of balance” within a particular sport discipline on the basis of gender, age and sport level (elite, medium level, low level). The result of this work permitted the implementation of the next application phase characterized by the performance of various training protocols for assessing the acute and chronic effects on balance parameters. The study produced interesting results leading to the reliability of general and specific static and dynamic balance tests with the validation of machinery used (MuscleLab Bosco System e Delos Postural Proprioceptive System); to the invalidation of the general balance test as instrument of assessment capable of discriminating the balance skill; to the creation and validation of a specific balance test which refer technical acts for assessing balance as discriminating factor of the quality and technical level of the athlete and to the individuation of positive influence on balance skill of training protocols that use the whole body vibration.

Full textDetta examensarbete utfört i samarbete med CorPower Ocean, är det slutgiltiga steget i författarens utbildning på masternivå på KTH (Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan) Stockholm. Syftet med arbetet är att karakterisera en kaskadväxellåda som används för att omvandla vertikal rörelse från vågor till rotation som driver generatorer i företagets framtida vågkraftverk samt att utifrån resultat föreslå möjliga förbättringar och belysa eventuella problem. Den metod som använts för att karakterisera kaskadväxellådan var att via fysiska mätningar, på den testrigg placerad på KTH (Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan) i Stockholm, erhålla data för lastfördelningen i den geometriskt överbestämda konstruktionen. Dessa data användes sedan för att kalibrera en statisk och en dynamisk modell som också utvecklades för det här projektet. Huvudfokus för arbetet har legat i att ta reda på om den konstruktion som används för att fördela lasten mellan kugghjulen fungerar tillfredställande samt att säkerställa att inget kugghjul tar mer än de 2,5% överlast vid fullast växellådan är dimensionerad för vid något tillfälle. Examensarbetet inkluderar även feltoleransers inverkan på lastfördelningen i kaskadväxeln. Resultaten visade att den nuvarande konstruktionen presterar inom de specificerade dimensioneringsintervallen. Några oväntade karaktärsdrag upptäckdes dock vid analys av resultaten. På grund av en avsiktlig geometrisk oregelbundenhet släpade hälften av kugghjulen efter åt ena hållet vilket i sin tur resulterade i en ojämn lastfördelning och oönskade sidokrafter på kuggracken. Flexenheterna som används för att fördela lasten likvärdigt mellan kugghjulen skilde sig åt i styvhet. Den inverkan spridningen av dessa har på lastfördelningen belystes också eftersom lastfördelningen konvergerar mot värden direkt proportionella mot styvhetsförhållandet mellan dem. Slutsatsen från examensarbetet är att den nuvarande konstruktionen, även om den fungerar tillfredställande, lämnar utrymme för förbättringar som potentiellt kan förbättra både livslängd och lastfördelningsprestanda.
