Abstract:
This diploma thesis examines the legislation of the status and organisation of the statistical service in Czechoslovakia in the years 1918-1938 which has lacked sufficient exploration. In this period, statistics referring to public administration was centralised and under the responsibility of the State Statistical Council and the State Statistical Office. These institutions are given special attention, particularly issues associated with their intricate aspects: personnel, budget and location. While the State Statistical Office was one of the central government authorities in Czechoslovakia, the State Statistical Council had the nature of an advisory body and an independent decision-making authority. The centralisation did not apply to statistical surveys carried out by certain cities. This thesis uses primarily unpublished archive materials and published sources concerning the activities of the State Statistical Office and the State Statistical Council.

Abstract:
This study focuses on supervised learning, an aspect of statistical learning. The supervised learning is concerned with prediction, and prediction problems are distinguished by the output predicted. The output of prediction is either a categorical or continuous variable. If the output is a categorical variable, we have classification otherwise what obtains is regression. We therefore identify classification and regression as two prediction tools. We further identify many features commonly shared by these prediction tools, and as a result, opine that it may be possible to use a regression function in classification or vice versa. Thus, we direct our research towards classification, and intend to: (i) Compare the differences and similarities between two main classifiers namely, Fisher's Discriminant Analysis (FDA) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). (ii) Introduce a regression based classification function, with acronym RDA (Regression Discriminant Analysis). (iii) Provide proof that RDA and FDA are identical. (iv) Introduce other classification functions based on multiple regression variants (ridge regression and Lasso) namely, Lasso Discriminant Analysis (LaDA) and Ridge Regression Discriminant Analysis (RRDA). We further conduct experiments using real world datasets to verify if the error rates of RDA and FDA on the same datasets are identical or not. We also conduct similar experiments to verify if differences arising from the error rates of using LaDA, RRDA, FDA and Regularized Fisher's Discriminant Analysis (RFDA) on the same datasets are statistically different from each other or not. In the end, we explore benefits that may derive from the use of LaDA as a classifier, particularly in connection with variable selection.

Abstract:
The thesis focuses on the creation and functioning of the State statistical office and its contribution to the statistical science and theory development. The main goal of the thesis is to make the readers acquainted with the first period of the czechoslovak state statistics and enable them to get a thorough look into the institution's publication activities. In this concept the thesis is divided into three parts. In the first one the "modus operandi" of the statistical office itself is described, the second part comes up with the State statistical office's most influential personalities' biografical data. The third part brings the description and analysis ot books, magasines and other pieces publication. At the conclusion of the third section the key works of the statistical theory are analysed. The enclosure of the thesis implies the attachment with published laws and regulations of the Czechoslovak republic, which are directly tied to the statistical office's activities, and also the list of pieces published int the two key editions of the publication system. The contribution of the thesis is in the complex insight on the topic of the czechoslovak statistics in the interwar period. By now only some fragments have been compiled and described.

Abstract:
This senior thesis project explores and generalizes some fundamental machine learning algorithms from the Euclidean space to the statistical manifold, an abstract space in which each point is a probability distribution. In this thesis, we adapt the optimal separating hyperplane, the k-means clustering method, and the hierarchical clustering method for classifying and clustering probability distributions. In these modifications, we use the statistical distances as a measure of the dissimilarity between objects. We describe a situation where the clustering of probability distributions is needed and useful. We present many interesting and promising empirical clustering results, which demonstrate the statistical-distance-based clustering algorithms often outperform the same algorithms with the Euclidean distance in many complex scenarios. In particular, we apply our statistical-distance-based hierarchical and k-means clustering algorithms to the univariate normal distributions with k = 2 and k = 3 clusters, the bivariate normal distributions with diagonal covariance matrix and k = 3 clusters, and the discrete Poisson distributions with k = 3 clusters. Finally, we prove the k-means clustering algorithm applied on the discrete distributions with the Hellinger distance converges not only to the partial optimal solution but also to the local minimum.

Abstract:
All too often statistics are characterized as lies. But statistics are more likely to be half truths than lies. This paper studies statistical prevarication – the art of strad- dling both sides of an issue or idea – involving a statistic. This paper studies statis- tical prevarications in everyday use and in statistics education. If statistics educa- tors are to avoid a charge of statistical negligence, they should focus more on iden- tifying and eliminating sources of statistical prevarication in their teaching and textbooks. And statistical educators should do more to help students become statis- tically literate in detecting statistical prevarication.

Abstract:
Introductory statistics courses have become increasingly prevalent in a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs over the past few years. This has resulted in the study of inferential statistics becoming the norm rather than exception. Whilst statistics was once a course chosen by the more mathematically able student, many current students of statistics have little mathematical aptitude or expertise (Tanis, 1992 for example). As a result, many introductory statistic courses have moved away from including much of the statistical theory that underpins inference to become basically technique oriented "recipe book" courses. the internet danger of producing students capable of performing various complex statistical tests without really knowing what they are doing is obvious, particularly if the house includes the use of a sophisticated statistical computer package.

Abstract:
Despite its importance in modern curricula, many students find statistics courses challenging, and the existence of barriers among students to learning statistical reasoning is an important area of study. This study explores the presence and level of statistics anxiety in several cohorts of students studying introductory statistics. The relationship with statistical anxiety dependent on specialisms is explored, along with their curricular choices. An online questionnaire was developed to explore the effects of statistical anxiety and attitudes towards learning statistics. Comparisons were made both within and between the cohorts of students and showed that demographic factors and gender play a minor but statistically significant role in explaining levels of statistical anxiety, but that no significant differences in statistics anxiety existed between cohorts.

Abstract:
High-quality official statistics--from inflation to poverty rates--are essential for effective policymaking. Yet, little is known about the statistics officials who produce this statistical data. How competent are they at statistics? How motivated and ethical are they when producing statistics? And do National Statistical Offices (NSOs) manage them effectively? The answers are central to improving statistical capacity. Nonetheless, NSOs have not developed systematic measurement instruments to identify them. This pioneering publication addresses this gap. It presents the results of a survey of 13,300 NSO Employees in 14 Countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Findings show that statistics officials and their characteristics matter. For instance, greater competence of statistics officials correlates with greater statistical performance of an NSO. Findings also show that most statistics officials are motivated in their jobs and committed to their NSO yet many struggle with basic statistical competencies and are not satisfied with their remunerations. Beneath the surface of average findings, however, lies a landscape of substantial variation among NSOs and within different departments inside the same NSO. These disparities are driven in part by differences in human resources management practices. Certain practices, for instance related to merit recruitment, adequate pay and performance feedback, are associated with greater staff motivation, integrity and competence. The report thus provides a data-informed roadmap to manage NSOs better and a survey instrument to help NSOs around the world measure their own management and staff.

In 2024, 404 of 433 National Park System units collected and reported visitor use statistics; the remainder are unable to do so for a variety of reasons such as administration by another agency, non-federal land ownership, or new parks that lack staff and facilities for the management of visitor use statistics. The responsibility for compiling and summarizing visitor use statistics resides with the Socioeconomic and Resource Recovery Division in the Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Directorate. The Division relies on the conscientious efforts of NPS field personnel to count, record, and report visitor use. This system of collecting and summarizing monthly visitor use data is combined with continuous review and assessment of park visitor use estimation procedures to promote consistency and accuracy of data. Detailed instructions for the units that collect data, monthly visitation summaries, and reports displaying trends in park visitation are available on the NPS Visitor Use Statistics website.
