Abstract:
Relevance of the research topic. As a distinctive feature of the modern period of economic development, we can note a significant increase in the number of business entities that are forced to make management decisions on a statistical basis. The influence of external factors is increasing, and the consequences of erroneous management decisions are increasing. The new operating conditions of enterprises and industries make the use of statistical technologies in enterprise management relevant. The need for statistical information at all levels from the government to homemakers is growing like an avalanche, thus the need for statistical research is also growing. Statistics is one of the tools of effective management of the enterprise, which uses statistical materials of the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, the results of special surveys, and various analytical developments. At the same time, the attitude towards statistics in society is ambiguous. оптиIn different historical periods, the attitude towards statistics changed. The study showed that domestic statistics is developing in conditions of low statistical literacy of management personnel, a certain mistrust to official statistics, misunderstanding of the importance of state statistical operations, etc. On the other hand, in the conditions of making urgent decisions in crisis situations, statistical data are often ignored. This allows some managers to conclude that statistics is unnecessary. Meanwhile, the results of statistical studies and forecasts, which are based on modern methodological approaches and meet the requirements of international statistical standards, allow to predict the emergence of crisis situations and make effective management decisions in advance. Statistical support of management is a guarantee of high quality and professional management of any enterprise, an indicator that the manager possesses relevant information. Any new initiative is primarily based on an assessment of existing facts and the state of affairs in various sectors of the economy. The purpose of the study is to determine the role of statistical support in modern enterprise management. Research methods. The research used the method of statistical observation, generalization, grouping, comparison, the method of analogy, the method of induction and deduction. Research results. The article reveals the essence and importance of statistical management support for making effective management decisions. Field of application of results. In the practical activities of enterprises of any form of ownership and in the field of economic sciences. Conclusions according to the article. The essence and importance of statistical information as a tool in management for making optimal and rational management decisions is studied.

Abstract:
The article focuses on exploring the directions for implementing innovative analytical-statistical technologies as a tool for monitoring and detecting corruption in the state. To achieve this goal, the author clarifies the content of key concepts, defines the essence of innovative analytical-statistical technologies, and analyzes the applications of these technologies as elements of the state’s anti-corruption policy. It is determined that modern analytical-statistical technologies are integral to information technologies, which have emerged as a separate branch of production known as the information industry. Information technologies, including analytical-statistical ones, are realized through information systems, which combine technical tools (computers, communication devices and channels, peripherals, input/output devices, etc.) with software applications that facilitate the functioning of the technical components and analytical aspects, including the mathematical component (statistics). The use of analytical-statistical technologies as a tool to counter corruption at the state level is driven by the specificity of the corruption identification process. The application of relevant technologies is possible when perceiving corruption as a form of fraud. Therefore, the search for corruption in modern society requires a comprehensive approach, utilizing mathematical, analytical, and psychophysical research methods. This approach enables not only the identification but also the prediction of probable instances of abuse. Five directions for implementing innovative analytical-statistical technologies in anti-corruption activities are identified: 1) automation of data collection and processing; 2) automation of communication and office processes; 3) automation of direct management processes; 4) automation of decision-making processes and development; 5) development of expert systems. It is noted that analytical-statistical technologies find the most implementation in four of the identified directions: data collection/processing, direct management, decision support, and expert support.

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD<br>Over the past decades, the use and application of statistical concepts for university students have been a big challenge learned from their previous courses. Aftermath of democracy, South African higher education focused on redressing issues of reparation and social imbalances inherited from Apartheid with the commitment to reconstruct a comprehensive educational quality framework. Growing activities lead to new models emphasised to support students and universities in their attempts to demonstrate evidence of enthusiastic statistics learning, with an acceptable degree of accuracy. This study combines quantitative and qualitative research approaches to assess the knowledge of postgraduate students in applying suitable statistical procedures in higher education (HE). The quantitative data were randomly collected from the postgraduate students (n1=307) while the qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews (n2=19) from two institutions (University of Cape Town [UCT] and University of the Western Cape [UWC]) in the Western Cape, South Africa. The SPSS V24 statistical package was used for quantitative data analysis and the explorative design was selected as a theoretical framework to guide the investigation, analysis and interpretation of the qualitative findings. UCT model achieved for all combined categories 73% high prediction accuracy. The UWC model revealed similar results, with ask for help, worth of statistics, fear of statistics monitors, affect, cognitive competence, support from significant others, marital status, ethnic groups and type of study as significant predictors with a high prediction accuracy of 75.49%. Additionally, the ethnic groups, marital status, postgraduate programmes, experiences in statistics and effort were significant contributed factors of SELS beliefs while findings of the combined data of UCT and UWC significantly explained the variation observed in SELS beliefs with only 60% model accuracy. Nevertheless, the qualitative data outcomes indicated that the comments of the participants provided a rich understanding of the perceived failure to choose a relevant statistical test. The results further indicated that confusion and frustration characterised the attitude of students during the selection of a suitable statistical test. The original value of this current study is bridging the inequity gap, in terms of statistics learning, and building a substantial input to the achievement of the objectives of UNESCO, the World Education Forum and the White Paper 3, while ultimately, contributing to the sustainable development of learning statistics at universities in the Western Cape, South Africa. By logical extrapolation, this current study proffers significant insights to the rest of the universities in Africa, and beyond.

Patel, Zubair. "A decision support system for sugarcane irrigation supply and demand management." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/24455.

Full text
Abstract:
Commercial sugarcane farming requires large quantities of water to be delivered to the fields. Ideal irrigation schedules are produced indicating how much water to be supplied to fields considering multiple objectives in the farming process. Software packages do not fully account for the fact that the ideal irrigation schedule may not be met due to limitations in the water distribution network. This dissertation proposes the use of mathematical modelling to better understand water supply and demand management on a commercial sugarcane farm. Due to the complex nature of water stress on sugarcane, non-linearities occur in the model. A piecewise linear approximation is used to handle the non-linearity in the water allocation model and is solved in a commercial optimisation software package. A test data set is first used to exercise and evaluate the model performance, then to illustrate the practical applicability of the model, a commercial sized data set is used and analysed.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD (Industrial Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The crucial role of innovation in creating sustainable competitive advantage is widely recognised in industry today. Likewise, the importance of having the required information accessible to the right employees at the right time is well-appreciated. More specifically, the dependency of effective, efficient innovation processes on the availability of information has been pointed out in literature. A great challenge is countering the effects of the information overload phenomenon in organisations in order for employees to find the information appropriate to their needs without having to wade through excessively large quantities of information to do so. The initial stages of the innovation process, which are characterised by free association, semi-formal activities, conceptualisation, and experimentation, have already been identified as a key focus area for improving the effectiveness of the entire innovation process. The dependency on information during these early stages of the innovation process is especially high. Any organisation requires a strategy for innovation, a number of well-defined, implemented processes and measures to be able to innovate in an effective and efficient manner and to drive its innovation endeavours. In addition, the organisation requires certain enablers to support its innovation efforts which include certain core competencies, technologies and knowledge. Most importantly for this research, enablers are required to more effectively manage and utilise innovation-related information. Information residing inside and outside the boundaries of the organisation is required to feed the innovation process. The specific sources of such information are numerous. Such information may further be structured or unstructured in nature. However, an ever-increasing ratio of available innovation-related information is of the unstructured type. Examples include the textual content of reports, books, e-mail messages and web pages. This research explores the innovation landscape and typical sources of innovation-related information. In addition, it explores the landscape of text analytical approaches and techniques in search of ways to more effectively and efficiently deal with unstructured, textual information. A framework that can be used to provide a unified, dynamic view of an organisation‟s innovation-related information, both structured and unstructured, is presented. Once implemented, this framework will constitute an innovation-focused knowledge base that will organise and make accessible such innovation-related information to the stakeholders of the innovation process. Two novel, complementary text analytical techniques, Latent Dirichlet Allocation and the Concept-Topic Model, were identified for application with the framework. The potential value of these techniques as part of the information systems that would embody the framework is illustrated. The resulting knowledge base would cause a quantum leap in the accessibility of information and may significantly improve the way innovation is done and managed in the target organisation.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die belangrikheid van innovasie vir die daarstel van „n volhoubare mededingende voordeel word tans wyd erken in baie sektore van die bedryf.

Abstract:
An automatically trained, statistically based, fuzzy inference system that functions as a classifier is produced. The hybrid system is designed specifically to be used as a decision support system. This hybrid system has several features which are of direct and immediate utility in the field of decision support, including a mechanism for the discovery of domain knowledge in the form of explanatory rules through the examination of training data; the evaluation of such rules using a simple probabilistic weighting mechanism; the incorporation of input uncertainty using the vagueness abstraction of fuzzy systems; and the provision of a strong confidence measure to predict the probability of system failure. <br /><br /> Analysis of the hybrid fuzzy system and its constituent parts allows commentary on the weighting scheme and performance of the "Pattern Discovery" system on which it is based. <br /><br /> Comparisons against other well known classifiers provide a benchmark of the performance of the hybrid system as well as insight into the relative strengths and weaknesses of the compared systems when functioning within continuous and mixed data domains. <br /><br /> Classifier reliability and confidence in each labelling are examined, using a selection of both synthetic data sets as well as some standard real-world examples. <br /><br /> An implementation of the work-flow of the system when used in a decision support context is presented, and the means by which the user interacts with the system is evaluated. <br /><br /> The final system performs, when measured as a classifier, comparably well or better than other classifiers. This provides a robust basis for making suggestions in the context of decision support. <br /><br /> The adaptation of the underlying statistical reasoning made by casting it into a fuzzy inference context provides a level of transparency which is difficult to match in decision support. The resulting linguistic support and decision exploration abilities make the system useful in a variety of decision support contexts. <br /><br /> Included in the analysis are case studies of heart and thyroid disease data, both drawn from the University of California, Irvine Machine Learning repository.

Abstract:
As técnicas estatísticas utilizadas são ilustradas passo a passo por exemplos numéricos.<br>The use of statistical methodology for analytical methods validation is vital to assure that measurements have the quality level required by the goal to be attained. This thesis describes a statistical modelling approach for combining four different aspects of validation: checking the linearity of the calibration curve and compute the detection and the quantification limits; controlling the specificity of the analytical method; estimating the accuracy (trueness and precision) of the alternative method, for comparison with a reference method. The general approach is a synthesis of several partial techniques found in the literature, according to a choice of the most appropriate techniques in each case. For determination of the response function, statistical techniques are used for assessing the fitness of the regression model and for determination of the detection limit and the quantification limit. Method specificity is evaluated by adjusting a straight line between added and recovered concentrations via least squares regression and hypotheses tests on the slope and intercept. To compare a method B with a reference method A, the precision and accuracy of method B are estimated. A 4-factor nested design is employed for this purpose. The calculation of different variance estimates from the experimental data is carried out by ANOVA. The Satterthwaite approximation is used to determine the number of degrees of freedom associated with the variance components. The application of the methodology is thoroughly illustrated with step-by-step examples.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, 1998.<br>Folded leaves in pocket on p. [3] of cover, v. 2.<br>Includes bibliographical references.<br>Recent studies of turbidite bed thickness distributions have demonstrated power law and other statistical distributions. Chapter 2 explores the different distributions which may express fan processes and may be used as a tool to classify environments. Chapter 3 illustrates a correlation between cumulative distributions of well known turbidite deposits and interpreted fan subenvironments. A power law distribution may be, for some systems, the primary input signal and a one dimensional model allows qualitative-quantitative characterization of the effects of different fan processes. Environments dominated by different fan processes may be characterized based on the degree to which processes have acted as a "filter", systematically modifying the assumed power law distribution. This model is used to help account for bed thickness distributions observed in several field sites. Turbidite sections are often characterized in terms of alternating packages of thinning- and thickening-upward intervals, which are interpreted to be representative of different subenvironments, including channel and levee environments. In Chapter 4, stratigraphic sections from several field sites are analyzed for dominance of asymmetrical bedding packages using runs analysis. Results indicate ( 1) a correlation between the number of beds in the dataset and the significance level of the results, with may relate to prevalence of progradational and lateral migration of deposits; (2) runs tests should be applied with caution to datasets containing significant levels of erosion and amalgamation; and (3) runs tests may be used to identify the presence of interlayered lithologies and perhaps flow types. In Chapter 5, the log-log cumulative distribution model and the runs test techniques are applied to turbidites of the Permian Skoorsteenberg Fonnation in the Tanqua-Karoo Basin, South Africa. Exceptional exposure permitted a number of lateral correlation studies over a range of scales. The cumulative distribution model is supported by the turbidite distributions broadly subdivided into fan and interfan environments. Runs analysis reveals that interfan environments are generally more ordered than fan environments. Chapter 6 illustrates the development of a dual-component heterogeneous sediment transport model. A grain-scale model is integrated with a large scale basin model to simulate transport and deposition of heterogeneous-sized sediment in a fluvial system.<br>by Jennifer Carlson.<br>Ph.D.

AbstractThis paper discusses the design and evaluation of AUDiaL (Accessible Universal Diagrams through Language). AUDiaL is a web-based, accessible natural language interface (NLI) prototype that allows blind persons to access statistical charts, such as bar and line charts, by means of free-formed analytical and navigational queries expressed in natural language. Initial evaluation shows that NLIs are an innovative, promising approach to accessibility of knowledge representation graphics, since, as opposed to traditional approaches, they do not require of additional software/hardware nor user training while allowing users to carry out most tasks commonly supported by data visualization techniques in an efficient, natural manner.

Abstract:
AbstractThanks to its ability to offer a time-oriented perspective on the clinical events that define the patient’s path of care, Process Mining (PM) is assuming an emerging role in clinical data analytics. PM’s ability to exploit time-series data and to build processes without any a priori knowledge suggests interesting synergies with the most common statistical analyses in healthcare, in particular survival analysis. In this work we demonstrate contributions of our process-oriented approach in analyzing a real-world retrospective dataset of patients treated for advanced melanoma at the Lausanne University Hospital. Addressing the clinical questions raised by our oncologists, we integrated PM in almost all the steps of a common statistical analysis. We show: (1) how PM can be leveraged to improve the quality of the data (data cleaning/pre-processing), (2) how PM can provide efficient data visualizations that support and/or suggest clinical hypotheses, also allowing to check the consistency between real and expected processes (descriptive statistics), and (3) how PM can assist in querying or re-expressing the data in terms of pre-defined reference workflows for testing survival differences among sub-cohorts (statistical inference). We exploit a rich set of PM tools for querying the event logs, inspecting the processes using statistical hypothesis testing, and performing conformance checking analyses to identify patterns in patient clinical paths and study the effects of different treatment sequences in our cohort.

Abstract:
Abstract As the age of systems, structures, and components (SSC) in nuclear power plants increase so does the level of effort to manage their aging. Half of the nation’s nuclear plants are over 30 years old with essentially all of the remainder older than 20 years. For safety related service water systems, operating experience (OE) has shown that life spans of 25 years or more can be achieved without significant or concerted attention to mitigate internal corrosion. Nonetheless, plants are being challenged, by regulators and plant management, to define where their service water systems are in the life cycle management process and further predict, with enhanced confidence, the future levels of required maintenance, inspections, and engineering support. A significant portion of service water piping can be buried and not easily assessed. OE demonstrates that the condition of internal surfaces (i.e. internal corrosion) of buried and underground piping can be inferred from inspections of internal surfaces of above ground piping where the component material, environment and aging effects are similar. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a statistical method for quantitatively predicting piping thickness and leakage over time, provide context for the interpretation of results, and define confidence for those results. This will include a case history that demonstrates the application of a statistical model for buried and above grade segments of a service water system, benchmarking the model’s predictions, and the use of the model to prepare and plan maintenance and financial support up to license renewal and into the period of extended operation (PEO).

Full text
Abstract:
The effectiveness of using Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools to support design decisions is often hindered by the enormous computational demand of complex analysis models, especially when uncertainty is considered. Approximations of analysis models, also known as “metamodels”, are widely used to replace analysis models for optimization under uncertainty. However, due to the inherent nonlinearity in occupant responses during a crash event and relatively large numbers of uncertain variables and responses, naive application of metamodeling techniques can yield misleading results with little or no warning from the algorithms which generate the metamodels. Furthermore, in order to improve the quality of metamodels, a relatively large number of design of experiments (DOE) and comparatively expensive metamodeling techniques, such as Kriging or radial basis function (RBF), are necessary. Thus, sampling-based methods, e.g. Monte Carlo simulations, for obtaining the statistical quantities of system responses during the optimization loop may still be inefficient even for these metamodels. In recent years, analytical uncertainty propagation via metamodels is proposed by Chen et al. 2004, which provides analytical formulation of mean and variance evaluations via a variety of metamodeling techniques to reduce the computational time and improve the convergence behavior of optimization under uncertainty. An occupant restraint system design problem is used as an example to test the applicability of this method.

Full text
Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Rock mechanics models are "data-limited," i.e., one seldom knows enough about a rock mass to use computational models unambiguously. Statistical methods, however, are capable of being applied where there are good data but a limited understanding of certain natural phenomena, such as the creep of rock salt or coal burst mechanics. To demonstrate the use of statistical-analytical techniques in rock mechanics problems, two case studies are used. The first study involves a historic examination of a nuclear waste repository in rock salt, where mathematical models are built using excavation convergence data to identify significant variables and estimate future deformation and stability. The second case study focuses on ongoing analysis of coal burst mechanics and associated factors. Over the last three decades, a hybrid statistical-analytical methodology has been applied for identifying significant factors affecting coal burst. The final model utilizes data from 30 case studies from Utah, Colorado, Kentucky, and other Eastern U.S. mines providing predictive capability for the entire United States coal fields. 1. INTRODUCTION There are two methods used by engineers and researchers as tools to help predict conditions in the future: statistical and computational. Starfield and Cundall (1988) identify rock mechanics models as "data-limited," that is, one seldom knows enough about a rock mass to use computational models unambiguously. Statistical methods, on the other hand, are uniquely capable of being applied where there are good data but a limited understanding of certain natural phenomena, such as the creep of rock salt or elevated risk domains associated with the violent failure of strata commonly referred to as coal bumps or bursts. Rock bursts and coal bumps are defined as sudden, violent failure that occur near mine entries that are of such a magnitude that they expel large amount of rock and/or coal into an excavation, restricting safe and efficient access to the working area (Maleki and White 1997). Gradual failure and spalling is common in coal mine environment and is considered not problematic but controlled through proper mine orientation and application of support as needed. Important to these real-world statistical evaluations are (1) having sufficient number of data collected consistently and (2) incorporation of analytical calculations for quantifying geologic, mining and particularly geotechnical variables. By combining the strength of the statistical and analytical models, an improved "hybrid" model is created and utilized. Powerful examples of the use of statistical techniques to evaluate stability and performance using significant field investigations are given by Parson and Dahl (1971), Maleki and White (1997), Maleki and Owen (2001), Maleki et al. (2001), Maleki et al. (2023), and Maleki (2023).

Abstract:
This article analyzes the ways to apply Learning Analytics, Cloud Technologies, and Big Data in the field of education on the international level. This paper provides examples of international analytical researches and cloud technologies used to process the results of those researches. It considers the PISA research methodology and related tools, including the IDB Analyzer application, free R intsvy environment for processing statistical data, and cloud-based web application PISA Data Explorer. The paper justifies the necessity of creating a stand-alone web application that supports Ukrainian localization and provides Ukrainian researchers with rapid access to well-structured PISA data. In particular, such an application should provide for data across the factorial features and indicators applied at the country level and demonstrate the Ukrainian indicators compared to the other countries’ results. This paper includes a description of the application core functionalities, architecture, and technologies used for development. The proposed solution leverages the shiny package available with R environment that allows implementing both the UI and server sides of the application. The technical implementation is a proven solution that allows for simplifying the access to PISA data for Ukrainian researchers and helping them utilize the calculation results on the key features without having to apply tools for processing statistical data.

Abstract:
The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) was commissioned by the Teachers and Teaching Research Centre (TTRC) at the University of Newcastle to conduct an independent randomised controlled trial (RCT), with the goal of examining effects of Quality Teaching Rounds (QTR) on student outcomes and teachers’ practice in Victorian high schools. A total of 19 schools participated in Quality Teaching Rounds in 2022, with 20 schools in the wait list control. Data were gathered in an ongoing manner during the evaluation with: Progressive Assessment Tests in Mathematics (PAT-M) and reading (PAT-R) – baseline and follow up; student self-efficacy and aspiration surveys – baseline and follow up; teacher surveys – one questionnaire administered every term; implementation fidelity check surveys for teachers to complete for each QT Round; and implementation fidelity checks with onsite visits from ACER staff for 33% of the treatment schools. Key findings include: The mixed model analysis showed that treatment was not a significant predictor of PAT-R and PAT-M outcomes. Differences in student responses to the self-efficacy and aspiration surveys were identified. The control group showed a significant increase in the level of education that they aspired to complete (p = 0.037). Teachers in the control group had statistically significant growth in teacher efficacy, while those in the treatment group showed statistically significant lower teacher student support. Within the QTR process, the longest time was spent on discussing the coding and the individual coding process. Key observations identified from analysis of the fidelity check data are: teacher stress due to high rates of absenteeism, varied use of the Classroom Practice Guide, and analytical conversations about some elements and terms.
