Abstract:
This thesis introduces new algorithms for analysis and classification of multivariate data. Statistical approaches are devised for the objectives of data clustering, data classification and object recognition. An initial investigation begins with the application of fundamental pattern recognition principles. Where such fundamental principles meet their limitations, statistical and neural algorithms are integrated to augment the overall approach for an enhanced solution. This thesis provides a new dimension to the problem of classification of data as a result of the following developments: (1

A novel method is developed for combining multiple laser scans of microarrays to correct for “signal saturation” and “signal deterioration” effects in the gene expression measurement. A multivariate nonlinear functional regression model with Cauchy distributed errors having additive plus multiplicative scale is proposed as a model for combining multiple scan data. The model has been found to flexibly describe the nonlinear relationship in multiple scan data. The heavy tailed Cauchy distribution with additive plus multiplicative scale provides a basis for objective and robust estimation of gene
